In 2006, I was planting trees in a team of four, an Australian supervisor, a quiet Englishman, and a chatty German in a rural area near Perth. All the trees we planted the day before were eaten by kangaroos, and the rain poured down like crazy, so we were soaking wet and moving to the next location, when suddenly the rain clouds cleared and the weather turned sunny, and suddenly a lakeside appeared. Many birds were sitting on the branches of trees that looked dead in the middle. This song started playing at the moment when everything seemed to have stopped. I asked in halting English, barely able to control my emotions, whose song it was, and from then on, this song became my Australia. Even now, when I listen to this song, the scenery, the feeling inside my shoes that were soaked with emotion, are vivid.
It is an iconic Australian song. Have you heard Cattle and Cain. Similarly but even more iconic. There's so many great songs about our scrubby country. Look up Cattle and Cain on RUclips. It's beautiful and it's in 5/4 which is my favourite rhythm structure. Pretty difficult to play.
Whow, I was listening to Johny Depp and he recommended this band Augie March and this particular song, One Crowded Hour. I fell in love with it from the first line if the song. Its amazingly beautiful, romantic and sad. I absolutely love this song and band, now I'm a big fan. Thankyou so much Johny Depp. N.F.T. love and respect. Yours truly. Xxxx.
I am unsure whether most people get the literary reference here... "Sound, sound the clarion, fill the fife, Throughout the sensual world proclaim, One crowded hour of glorious life Is worth an age without a name." - Thomas Osbert Mordaunt (1730-1809) And so... as heartbroken as our hero is... the world is STILL a better place for having loved than not. I just heard this on the radio. I remember really not liking this song, but I just realised how many levels this has, and what an amazing piece of composing this is.
Amazing song that makes its lyrics become one with the music. Maybe the most beautiful Australian song I've ever heard. Listening to it is just musical magic.

I first heard this song in the earth hour 2009 ... Literaly 10 years ago... I was in middle school. It was when I fell in love for the first time in my life... I remember the boy's name. After all those years I just had the guts to tell him how I felt. It didn't end up in anything... But I can just feel I was brave enough.... And this song is still with me. It remembers me him. It still feels good tough...
This song is amazing. I hope they play this song in the theatre act with filming they are currently making in Tasmania - about the life of Neil Davis. I am grateful to have the privilege to take part in the filming and making the project.
I first learned about this song from when it appeared in an australian tv show, and now I can't ever forget the song, but the name of the tv show I can't for life of me remember what it was. Such a beautiful song
"One crowded hour of glorious life is worth an age without a name" Mordaunt. Tim Bowden used this quote to reference Neil Davis and his incredible photojournalism in SE Asia in the sixties, seventies indeed till 1985 and his death... shot in BKK covering a coup. Whether most readers here know it or not they have seen some of Davis' work but not lived a crowded minute in contrast to his life and the crowded hour referred to here.
And the sad part about his death is that the coup didn't actually happen...it was an Asian fuck up that took the life of an amazingly talented photojournalist who loved the country he was working in. I read the book and it inspired me to take that quote as my personal aim in life. Sound sound the clarion, fill the fife, throughout the sensual world proclaim, one crowded hour of glorious life is worth an age without a name...Thomas Osbert Mordaunt (1730-1809) He was a soldier and a poet.
T Ryan supposedly a "bloodless coup" I'm sure Mr. Davis would disagree with that description. I read the book and he was one hell of a man. One crowded hour of glorious life...has become the mantra I live by since reading of his life and what he achieved
Margaret, I think the mantra you have referred to twice and also the the reason why many visit, is a wonderful way to live life. We have the locus of the quote, and the memorable ways in which it has been deployed by others to excel and celebrate the human condition. Fill your life full, readers. However, I will stop briefly to say, Neil's view on the coups he saw are better saved for forums where we can flesh out the histories. Christopher Koch is worth following up for those who like a great historical read on this, 'Highways to a War'. Awesome book.

Should you expect to see something that you hadn't seen
In somebody you'd known since you were sixteen
If love is a bolt from the blue,
Then what is that bolt but a glorified screw

Far from these nonsense bars and their nowhere music
It's making me sick and I know it's making you sick
There's nothing there; it's like eating air
It's like drinking gin with nothing else in
That doesn't hold me together
But for one crowded hour, you were the only one in the room
And I sailed around all those bumps in the night to your beacon in the gloom
I thought I had found my golden September in the middle of that purple June
But one crowded hour would lead to my wreck and ruin
Now I know you like your boys to take their medicine
From the bowl with a silver spoon
Who run away with the dish and scale the fish
By the silvery light of the moon
Who were taught from the womb to believe to the tune
In as far as their bleeding eyes see
It's a pleasure pen, meant for them, built for and rent for them
Not for the likes of me
Not for the like of you and me
And for one crowded hour, you were the only one in the room
And I sailed around all those bumps in the night to your beacon in the gloom
I thought I had found my golden September in the middle of that purple June
But one crowded hour would lead to my wreck and ruin
Oh but the green-eyed harpy of the song land
She takes into hers my hand
She says, "Boy I know you're lying
Oh but then, so am I, "
And to that I said "Oh well"
They put me in a cage full of lions, I learned to speak lion
In fact I know the language well
I picked it up while I was versing myself in the languages
They speak in hell
That night, the silence gave birth to a baby
They took it away to her silent dismay
And they raised it to be lady
Now she can't keep her mouth shut
For one crowded hour, you were the only one in the room
I sailed around all those bumps in the night to your beacon in the gloom
I thought I had found my golden September in the middle of that purple June
But one crowded hour would lead to my wreck and ruin
One crowded hour, you were the only one in the room
Well I played a few songs for those bumps in the night
In fact I played this very tune
You said, "What is this six-stringed instrument but an adolescent loom?"
And one crowded hour would lead to my wreck and ruin
I love reading along as I listen, my thanks.
