loose handling to me is better cause it makes your defender reach more but you have a to have pretty good handles to have loose cause it still could east to take
But there are advantages that Tight Handling has over Loose Handling, while I love loose handling more cause it allows you to be more free with your options, tight handling allows you to guard the ball better than loose handling does, loose handlers get a bit more carefree and that sometimes allows other players to steal the ball a bit more easier, tight handlers are more careful about it so they sometimes have to analyze their situation to figure out what's the best course of action to take, but again I still love loose handling more just because it allows you to have more options
I need to work on my tight handles. Probably why my buddy always beats me in 1v1, and also probably why I have trouble maneuvering and keeping the ball safe during 5v5 Good video
Allen Iverson actually at half of times, He's tight. When he does behind the backs, half spin move or all the way, he usually is tight at handling. The handles are mostly his Signature move "The Cross"
I prefer tight handles because, its low, more control, better for direction change and better for driving. And also since you drive lower, your layup will have more power too.
They should've added Curry to the loose handles list and Kyrie to the tight handles list. And on the loose handles benefits part, they should've added that 'less energy is used and potentially less time is wasted. Also more beneficial for shooting off the dribble. Great video nonetheless.
Tips to get past defenders sell a direction you are going in with the ball, eyes, hips, footwork and shoulders and you will most definitely destroy them
Aggressive defenders always steal the ball on loose handles, loose handles are great for low traffic and easier to fake, tight handles are good on high and aggressive traffic but harder to fake you need more speed to master tight handles. Just depending on the situation actually
Meh, i guess, but if you have proper body control and timing that should't be happening, loose moves are meant to look easy to steal so that you bait the d into reaching and therefore creating a oppurtunity to drive or score, basically, if you're turning the ball over, you're doing it wrong
If you're a small guy like me tight handles are not as effecting when being guarded by a large player. Of course me being 5'2" being guarded by 6'3" and over .. 😬
Landon Cha hit the defender with a tight between the legs dribble then a outstretched hesitation crossover it works every time for me and can be easily countered with an in and out and more etc.
That's literally impossible. In order to use body feints the ball had to be in a "frozen" state. Kind of like a hesitation. Loose handles almost always have a hesi in the combo because it freezes the defender, which makes them react on your next move, which is usually a cross/fake.
Does that means the tight handle is when the ball stay close to your body, so the body will lead the ball moves. In comparison, the loose handle is the ball lead your body to move?
Basically, tight handles are better for playing the game and loose handles are better for flashing off. Personally, I’d rather drop 30 then drop someone and drop 15.
No, not really, tight handles are better for players with the athletic advantage, meaning they're most effective when a player is quicker than his matchup and can get the step (think kyrie) while loose handling is much better for slower ball handlers as they need to rely more on deceptive body movements and defenders reaching to create shots (think KD or luka)
Probably 'cause typically with a tight handle, especially in 1 on 1 situations you need to have an explosive first step. Plus, with a tight handle in transition/in motion you can make much sharper changes of direction. Where with a loose handle it's more of a mental game. So, if you're in tune with your opponent and a proficient defender being able to anticipate their moves along with reading their big motions properly, not being "deceived", it's easier to hang with a loose ball handler since they allow a larger room for error. Once a tight ball handler makes a move, they're at the cup, where a loose ball handler has to finish all that lateral movement before they advance forward. Good "loose ball handlers" tend to apply both skills, where less efficient loose ball handlers tend to OD with unnecessary big movements. Tight ball handlers don't need to be both.
Looks like I have both then cause I dribble wide to deceive my defender but at the same time I keep the ball close when I combo it (Kinda hard for me to explain). Ps. really informative video btw.
Another advantage for loose handles is that. Since the dribble is higher, so is the vision. You can easily look for a pass. But the disadvantages are, there are possibilities that you may loose the ball. Since your dribbling higher, you dont have that much control of the ball.
I think this is the wrong way to phrase it because all of these guys have insanely right handles but their stances are different and the heights they play at.
Loose handle players couldn't play even in the early nineties. Those Pat Rikey KNICK teams or, Chuck Daly PISTONS were too physical. Those years were about possession basketball and clock management. Legal rules began to change especially, after the 94 finals when the ratings were the worst seen. Hand checking rules and illegal defense calls among others allowed for more creative Guard play while devaluing the Center position.
Actually no a combo of both is better, tight for drives and quick lay ups and fast points and close range shots, and loose for shooting off he dribble and getting some ankles but tight is so underesitmated
Just like there isn't one exact way to shoot the ball there isn't one exact way to dribble it either I guess. Great vid.

In a different era it's carry. Only tight dribbles are transferable in any era.
This is what is know as quality content. Like this to boost PJFPerformance in the RUclips algorithm.
i remember that i saw this video when i just started playing basketball for a few months, time flies by
I’m three years late but this guys topic and content is great
Dope from beginning to end. Awesome explanations and examples; you make the difference clear and easy to understand
nice video showcasing the different dribbling styles. different situations, different options. not just 1 way to do it!
Totally describes how your style is the shit lol! I'm gonna master both to keep the defense guessing
Salehe Rehani lol master all the styles!
This was a very informative video.
I need both these music mixes, fire 🔥

Kyrie does both, and he breaks ankles on the regular.
malik caradine currys handles tighter than kyries? You're ridiculous
IMO, Kyrie is a master of both.
I'd flip those, but Kyrie is great at both.

Definitely more of a tight ball handler. Explosive moves with counters and change of speed.

Wow, what a great video
i have loose handles but keep the ball below my hips.
Curry The Goat Of Mankind Last Nba Legend then you probaly have both type

Hey coach I really do believe that you kno your dribbling but is there any type of drills/tips to develop a loose handle???
watch a mixtape
Try dribbling low and quick do freestyle dribbling which is just any move but dont stop and keep going but do it quick
Tristian House practice changing pace from quick confusing dribbles to slow hesitations in to explosive steps and defenders will crumble believe me
Does that means the tight handle is when the ball stay close to your body, so the body will lead the ball moves. In comparison, the loose handle is the ball lead your body to move?
Huh
I see you with that Apollo brown beat

Loose handles requires good acceleration or balance on pull up jumpers
I don't know why but I found people with a tight handle harder to defend.

Fif 5t. Good points
Wow, I came across a this video back in 2015 when I was overseas trying out for pro league. I can’t believe I saw this again.
I think tight handles are better because it's harder for the defence to steal and it's easier to control
Looks like I have both then cause I dribble wide to deceive my defender but at the same time I keep the ball close when I combo it (Kinda hard for me to explain). Ps. really informative video btw.
Kyrie is a master at both
who else thought the beginning of the video was an ad?
so kyrie breaks down this video in so many ways
im naturally a loose handles guy by default, kinda like mcgrady with the rock, but of coz hes so slick and smooth, and im a watered down version lol.
Loose Handle = carrying the basketball; which is a violation
@PJFPerformance ur d best ! ^_^
Music with the Stranger Things vibes though...nice
Is it possible to have both because I think I have both
Can you teach how to do that move you did in the beginning of the video
Any tips on mixing loose and tight handles?
work on both but use tight handles more than loose if they can't guard you use loose
Nice breakdown.
I use loose on a 1v1 situation adn tight if double teamed or pressured
Kyrie is part of that tight handle community
Ephraim Miala mainly tight, his godfather handle is loose.
@Acer72 so is AI tho, but every player has a core style of handling
Awesome video!!!
Tight Handles a Chicago style handle, very good style against aggressive defenders. (Hacks)
whats the song in beginning shit was kickin

Is this similar to "in the box" dribbling versus "out?"
feel like kevin durant has a nice loose handle
awesome vid--don't think anyone has had better tight handles than KI tho = P
Ig I need right handles since I’m a 5’8 guard

Really cool video, nice info
Funny how all these guys you mentioned as masters of tight handles are fathers of current nba players haha
I think this is the wrong way to phrase it because all of these guys have insanely right handles but their stances are different and the heights they play at.
Tight handles are vital when the refs actually call carry.
Very very true
only people with long arms can have loose handles. AI and Crawford have long reach.
Benny Chen I don't have extremely long arms but I have a loose handle and a tight one
Another dude incorrect many small people use loose and works great, look at curry dumb ass maybe even KD
KD is not small
really good video
Who here for 2k20?
I'm both
I don't see the point in categorizing something so vague in to 2 groups. Like everything a mix of these two.
it's not vague at all. it's a mix of the two but you can easily differentiate the types with his description.
I have loose handles
Lxb3 TV me too
whyh pick you pick tim hardaway to represent tight handles? thats random af obviously kyrie has the tightest handles
which would work better for a short player?
ChriSTiaN tight handles
Doesn't matter tbh. Probably loose because it relies on explosion, and short guys are usually pretty explosive/quick.
Jonathan Gordon Tight handles relies on explosiveness.
Jonathan Gordon correction tight rely on explosion but tbh small players neef both while taller people can should stick to one
Tight
Curry is loose due to shot of dribble he doesn't explode that much out of his jumper for a tight ball handler like you see I.T. And Tim Hard do.
im built like Jamal Crawford so im a loose dribbler

Tight handles it is then

Not being racist but in my observation most black players are loose handlers while white people are tight handlers
Loose handles: Kyrie Irving
Tight handles: Steph Curry
Tight handling is better=)
