Is The Viral $50 Pink Pineapple Overrated?

  • You PROBABLY have heard of this pink pineapple or "The Jewel Of the Jungle" I was at my local exotic produce store and it caught my eye so I had to give it a try. I've heard it tastes like pears, strawberries, peaches, all i know is that this thing smells like a pink starburst. This one was viral a couple of years ago but I know it made a huge splash at the time, I need to know if its worth it or not.

Hey Merle! Someone from Costa Rica here :)
I don't know anyone from here who had tried pink pineapple, but you know what Costa Rican ingredient you could try, which is very typical from here and could serve as a meat substitute? Arracache!
We have a typical dish called Picadillo de Arracache, and it's made with potatoes, arracache and meat (but meat is not actually necessary since arracache is kinda meaty)
I'd be pretty cool if you try to buy arracache to make Picadillo de Arracache :)

"GMO bad" is such a horrible statement. it is no worse than the cultivated produce we have been eating and refining for thousands of years, it's more of a scientific "shortcut" to get desired traits. it is no different than the wild brassica plant being modified traits to turn into different vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, brusselsprouts, cabbage etc etc

Hello Merle! I greet you from Costa Rica. I know that for foreigners it is very interesting to see a pink pineapple, but as a geographer who has worked closely on the issue of pineapple monocultures, it is a little counterproductive to see someone who wants to be a little more sustainable eating that. You can read more scientific articles on the subject. Pineapple monocultures are destroying our little country so that the rest of the world can enjoy a pink pineapple. The soils where they are harvested are so destroyed that they are useless to build houses and not to mention the social problem, poorly paid labor, health problems due to agrochemicals and violence. Of course, I am not saying this to judge or make others feel bad, but to learn that the meat industry is not the only polluting and problematic industry, in the end what really counts is being conscious consumers.

Roundup Ready crops are resistant to herbicides so the herbicide can be used to kill weeds, but there are crops modified with pest resistance genes so they don't need to use pesticides. I'd prefer to see that educational element as a component of these videos.
