Yes. Even though he said it was entertainment at the very start of the video. I watched videos like hoarders with a compassionate view. And to remind myself of where I was in reality, when feeling over stimulated by stuff, and overwhelmed with feelings of the energy connected to stuff. Hoarding is complex. Thank you Knowable Prank for you compassion and patience with your father. Thank you for what you have brought to the world too

Matt doesn't believe in Feng shui masters, though. Maybe there should be an alternative, traditional Asian version of this, where there is feng-shui rescue, and you could have follow-up to show how their lives turn around. Yeah, these hoarders are wearing out Matt. He has to love them; they're his livelihood. But they all seem like psycho, sociopathic narcissists to me. I really doubt the elderly one's ever change.

I was becoming a hoarder.. I never let my family (sister, Mom) into my place because I'm messy. But watching this, I've learned that I didn't want them to see my mess. I've thrown so much away that I've hoarded, and I have no problem having people in my place now. I enjoy living with the things I NEED, rather than things I'm keeping in order to remember stuff. Part of my hoarding: I have a little over 14 years clean from a pill addiction, and now I know that it's most likely because of something that happened when I was a child. My family was never invited into my home back then (they might have found a straw or something like that). Now I have a small but tidy home and they feel comfortable coming in and visiting with me. Thank you to this show.

The most important thing I’ve learned from watching Matt and Dorothy is how to speak to the person with the condition. Fifteen to twenty years ago I may have shrieked at my relative like some family members. The more I learn about my own condition (ADD and OCD, I know...conflicting conditions) and what can lead to hoarding, I am learning dialog and coping strategies that can help. Especially being completely honest with yourself with the questions, “Do I need this, will I use this, would it be better to bless someone else with this?”

“Do I need , will I use this, would it be better to bless someone else with this?. Love your questions at the end of your comment - it sounds so like the’Swedish Death Cleaning’ that I am putting into practice to make it easier for my daughter to deal with my stuff when I’m gone. It’s a gentle practice which can proceed slowly over weeks or months. I’m 74yrs old but can start this practice at any age.

You're a good guy Matt. It's funny though your show really does help ppl who watch. I watch an episode and in the middle of it I immediately start cleaning. 3 episodes later, my house is clean for the day lol. Thank you. Itcworks everytime. I have children, so my favorite episodes are the cps related ones. I suffer from a bad back, due to being hit as a pedestrian, my son who was 9 at the time and I were both hit,he suffered a concussion i was thrown several feet. On days when I really heed some motivation, your show helps tremendously. The first season helped me declutter my ratpacking several years ago. Especially paperwork lol. Today I have a normal home,as normal as a child with adhd and two toddlers in the home allow for. Anyway, thank you for all the help and awareness your show has done.

Angie it is refreshing to read a comment by someone interested in what goes on in the mind of a hoarder, and not just the drama of it all. As someone that hoarded their basement, I have some insight into what can trigger those that did not come by it via the generations, many times it is a major and/or tragic event, as in my own situation.

This is an amazing show. I watch it to psych myself up when I clean the house. Then I humbly thank god. I think people disdain hoarders because it’s hard to feel sorry for someone who fills 3 floors of a lovely home, a garage and umpteen acres with material goods when the “normal” people work so hard to live paycheck-to-paycheck. This show and especially you, Matt have helped me understand the illness separately from the person. The hoard represents where this person is in their life at this hour in time. The hoard is not the person. (Love Zazio too)

    • @globalmuffin2
      @globalmuffin2 5 лет назад +1

It might have something to do with "tragic moments", but more with lack of time / strength to clean and with financial insecurity. Hoarding is no mental disorder. These guys are raving. Most people in the show were somewhat disabled: obese, with serious health problems such as non-functional limbs or cancer, old age, single, no family to rely on.

      Fabian Jones
I have helped several hoarders clean out. It's not a tragic event. Many times the same tragic event happened to a group of siblings and only one out of five became a hoarder. A tragic event can make someone who is very disorganized, mildly brain damaged, OCD, dyslexic, ADD, depressed, and/or socially anxious get a lot worse. It can be any one of those things. It can also be caused by addiction to shopping and collecting. And embarrassment and guilt can make it worse. They tend to have poor communication skills, get angry a lot, isolate themselves, and they tend to push people away.
When people try to help and rush them too fast, make fun of them, berate them and belittle them, this can lead to traumatizing them and escalate the hoarding. Hoarding might be the only coping skill they have.

I really like Matt, also. And, I'm one of the 20% that really does 'care', and I get interested in the psychology of the person. I want to understand what's behind their issues. I'm an RN, and spent 25 yrs in the hospital dealing with people, many in Oncology, and they tell me things they never tell anyone else, so I get a different level of understanding. I also spent 6 yrs in the Medical Dept of a Correctional facility, and also learned a lot about what goes on underneath those people, too. Both in the Men's and the Women's facility. So, I am the 20%.... and I do love Matt !!!

THANKS for this interview !! It gave alot of clarity to the HOARDERS show, where my compassion level and patience is very little !!! I've often said " I divorced, my parents died, I've had people force themselves on me and what the heck " get over it ", I didn't end up a hoarder !!" So apparently our brains all have acceptance levels and we need to be grateful the " roller coasters" life has given us haven't pushed us over the edge. " I also didn't realize that the family/hoarder actually has to pay for the service of the clean out !! You would think they would be ALOT more serious and cooperative about getting it cleaned up !! That shows how deep the illness runs, because if I pay for something I want results and my money's worth !! Also Matt saying 80 % of the people watch to feel better about themselves 🤣 ....WORD !! The show makes my skin itch, I take a shower and get busy cleaning my house that is already clean !! I have a strict " if something comes in; something has to go out " policy. Thanks again for the interview , it gave alot of perspective about the show and life in general !! Matt , when is YOUR book coming out !!!!????

I like that he is willing to see others, even damaged people, as people.... not people as their problems. Unfortunately, being able to see things from other's perspectives, to understand how they think, isn't a skill everyone has. I am an INTJ/INFJ personality type, it's an odd type that can understand other personalities to learn how they think, and in turn can actually add other personality traits to their own. So that they can, in effect, seem like any personality they want, or see things from any perspective. It's powerful in a way, but it can be lonely because strangely enough it makes it harder for others to understand you. What I like about it is that I'm able to help a lot of people, kinda like how this guy does.

I find these videos primarily entertaining. Some of them share some neat cleaning and organizing ideas/solutions, too, which is nice. I'm not out to learn compassion as I already have oodles of it. What I do find interesting, though, is that "hoarder" seems to have far more different causes and expressions than I realized prior to educating myself more about it on RUclips. There are hoarders that really are what I think of as hoarders in that they are really shopping addicts that seem to lose all their sense of space reality while in the shops. The shopping seems to be the primary issue, and that could have many reasons, including a lack of impulse control. I see a lot of these "hoarders" as simply incredibly lazy people who do not wish to bother to clean their homes. That's a whole different type of person, often. Then, there are those people who are in relationships and appear to be acting out mostly in a passive-aggressive way toward their partners. I'm always totally amazed their partners do not just move out. I could never live in a mess as some of them do. I love it when people blame their children for their hoarding. What a joke that is! I had four children, and I know better than that. I feel sorry for the children! Imagine being blamed for your home being a dump as child. sad, really. very damaging, I'm sure. Well, I will say this.. I have learned a lot. I continue to enjoy the videos simply because I love to see the before and after photos. They are just amazing. I'm sure they are very inspirational for many, and above all, it is a relief to know that these "hoarders" are getting the therapy they need. I've known a few people who live the way we see on these videos. It is totally appalling to me. There is no way it can be considered anything NEAR "normal" or healthy for them or anyone in their midst, but they are loving, decent hearts who obviously need help. I do not feel there is anything "wrong" with these videos or that they at all harm people. Carry on! I've seen a lot worse things on television! for sure ;) I appreciate you educating me more, as well as offering support to people with issues with making their space their home. Home is a very important THING.

“Guess what. Some people are just messy.”
Well, that would be me, but my messiness escalates during bad times. Thanks to Matt and Corey and Dorothy, I know that when boxes or furniture are “two deep,” I NEED to discard stuff to remain “just messy” and not have hoarded house.

G'day Matt , (my son's name as well)
You perfectly described " PAYING IT FORWARD " !!! I have a big word 4 you !!! RESPECT ! You are 1 awesome guy ..... May you and your loved ones stay blessed 4 ever !!!
What you do for people is priceless !
Such a humaine job ... tackling a world wide problem .... A dead man was found somewhere stuck under all his rubble in his hallway , as the neighbours started to complain about a bad smell . I felt so sad ... That things had to come to that , for someone to be noticed / found . How lonely that man must have been . The house inside was like an ant's nest ... just very narrow pathways left to get through ... but with everything ready to collapse . The house wasn't salvagable . It was completely taken down . Piles and piles of pristine newspapers . Wrapped in plastic by 50 odd .
They found a scanning machine as well ... ( very expensive ) ... suspecting he was planning on scanning every single page at 1 stage ... A whole pile weighing hundreds of kilos had dropped on him , pinning him to the ground . He literally starved and dehydrated to DEATH . Lying in a puddle of his own faeces and urine . Eaten partially by vermon ... Just so SAD !!! Only in his 50's !!! The guy turned out having family ... but he had turned his back on them . Not the other way round as is often the case . Great interview !!!
And an awesome cause ! And yes , THIS is something that should get lots of exposure everywhere around the world !!! As it is a worldwide problem !!! It has NOTHING to do with your colour or religion ... or age ! This can happen to ANYONE ! Even me and you ... It's an illness , but when you meet a horder ... You are meeting / seeing their results of many lonely years ... Usually they are pretty intelligent people , who are like stuck in a web , like a fly ... or in a labyrinth ... Not knowing their way out ... I'm a dental hygenist and I meet a lot of different people ... I'm sure there's horders amongst them .
The " SILENT " ones ... You've allways inspired me on shows ! 👍 You come across down to earth , but ALLWAYS with respect to your clients and their families ... so once more ... RESPECT !!! You have a big heart and a passion for the people you help getting straightened out ! Back to leading a normal functioning life !!! No longer taking a shower at the LOCAL swimming pool ... but just like you and me ... in our own homes ! But I agree with you on them having to keep up with therapy . So important . Because if they don't ... well ... big open areas need to be filled up ... it just really brings / gives them comfort ...
Keep up the good work , God Bless You and your awesome team !!!
Greetings from over the Atlantic ,
    Jody ... ❤💖❤💖❤💖❤⚘⚘⚘
And " look after thy neighbour " ..... You to could have a hoarder living right next door to you .... And if you suspect anything like that , don't be disgusted , but have heart and try to get these people the right help ... they more then likely end up being 4ever gratefull for you giving them their lifes back !!! 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
NO ONE ( apart from the odd 1 ) is a lost case ... and there is allways HOPE !!! 🦋🦋🦋 Cheers on many more salvages !!! 🍷🍺🍸🍸🍺🍷
And 1 more .... " Today is the 1st day of the rest of your life " ..... Which it is , once someone lets you in ...... 🦋

Yes - taking three months off is not only good for you and your family, but it's good for the people you have to deal with, as it's then easier for you to come from a place of caring. Cheers Matt!!

Wow, I didn't know that they have business connections to help the hoarders sell items that they have not been able to get around to selling themselves. I mean, occasionally I'll see an appraiser on the show, but it's nice to know that there's extra help and counseling going on behind the scenes. Matt is awesome and one of the reasons that Hoarders is such a good show. I actually have read Matt's book (and Dr. Zazio's book) and am one of the people who has used the show to tackle my clutter issues. I was at the "chronic disorganization" stage, kind of a pre-hoarder condition, when I used the show to learn how to approach the cleanup of my house. And yes, it involved very large dumpsters. Thankfully no poop or dead animals, but there was some black mold in the basement due to a foundation leak, so we had to clear that entire area so the mold abatement team could come in. My house looks great now, but it took four 8 ft by 20 ft dumpsters and dozens of trips to donation centers to get to this point, and our house wasn't even close to what the ones on the show look like (the kitchen and bathrooms were very clean, we have always had a cleaning crew come in every other week). This show has definitely made a big difference in my life. My hat is off to Matt and the other members of the Hoarders team for all their hard work and compassion. I hope the people they help can continue to live a better life after they are on the show.

Kristine my cousin was the same, lost my Aunty his mom years ago, he never recovered from it. I tried many times to assist him, I had been there with our basement, so I certainly was in no position to judge, however he never took me up on it.
Your cousin has to want the help, otherwise it will not work. The hoarder has to be part of the process so they can feel the range of emotions, and also so they can maintain it after you go home. I am not telling you anything new though am I?
Unfortunately it is too late for my beloved cousin, he passed in March. At least I know he knew that I never judged him, and loved him for who he was!
