ABOUT
I'm Grayson Taylor, an author and filmmaker, here to help you on your creative journey by sharing what I've learned-and what I'm still learning-about storytelling. After writing my first full-length novel when I was seven, I've authored more than a dozen action-adventure, sci-fi, mystery, and dystopian books. I've also written and directed several short films, composed music, and acted onstage, on TV, and in films.
You'll find writing advice, publishing tips, and behind-the-scenes videos on my channel.

My story’s theme is perseverance and if it’s always necessary.
I’m a new writer, and one thing I’ve found myself doing is overwriting. I try too hard, I try to cram meaning into every single sentence, and end up with something that’s just exhausting to read. A part of me wants to go through and simplify everything, but then I feel like I’m not trying hard enough. How can I find that balance between simplicity and complexity to overcome this?
Cut the fluff--best advice an English teacher gave me on my writing. That way those prose passages/phrases stand out and make way more of an impact than if every other word is trying to be impactful
Remember: write notes if things you want to include but when doing the writing you start with draft 1 then revise and then add or take away what doesn't work.
I'm the same as you. Even as a child when I wrote stories I'd work in draft 1 as if it was the final one. All or nothing, I guess
Different writers have different styles and levels of complexity, so part of it comes down to personal taste. But if you think you're overwriting, just write as much as you want in the first draft-then go through it in editing and ask yourself what's essential vs. what's unnecessary or redundant. A lot of my "overwriting" is repetition, so that's one big thing to keep an eye out for.
Having someone else to help you edit can bring a new, illuminating perspective to your writing, too. They might be able to spot redundancies and filler that you overlooked.
So obsessed with these videos. The short clips, to the point, with great editing. Sometimes, people do too much with their editing. Yours compliments your videos greatly. So much effort.
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying them. Finding the right balance between under-editing and over-editing can be tricky, but it's something I keep in mind and try to improve on with every video.
Love the content 🫶
Thanks! Much more to come.
Great quality content! Keep it up 😎😎
Thank you! I will 🫡
I'm on my third draft of my second book. The story takes place in Mississippi in post Civil War with mostly characters of color. I use strong dialect. Is that a good thing.
Watching this while writing my third book in my MG series
I'm inspired by Egypt in this and my characters summon Anubis and it's so funny so far lol
Question how do you get the motivation to write like I have the idea in the back of my head I about to start something but then was I start I like nah I do it later..or I look the docs/page like I have nothing to write about.
Write something. Even something silly or unrelated. Just get something on the page. Having a line of text in front of you will help get the wheels turning. Explain to yourself what your thinking as if you were explaining to a child. Then you can challenge it and improve it. 🌟
I may or may not be working on a video right now about this very topic... 😉
I write the most when I'm excited about the story. So if you can find some way to get yourself excited about the world, or the characters, or the plot-maybe by listening to a playlist inspired by the story, or re-reading what you've already written-that can be motivating.
My purple cow is taking a psychological look into the traditional action hero
All of the stuff you make is high quality. Very underrated channel. Subscribed
Thanks! Glad you're here.

I believe that a good story, requires an attractive and interesting world in which the story is set. But my problem is that I can't world build. How can I find an idea for a fantasy world?
Hi Taylor. I wanted to read your book: Catalyst of Control. Where can I possibly buy it (preferably in a physical version)?
