007 GoldenEye: The Gold Standard

  • Back in the retro game days no one expected a licensed game to change everything. When 007 GoldenEye hit shelves it introduced the FPS genre to many new players. FPS games were still around but needed a PC at the time to play them. With GoldenEye on the Nintendo 64 it was much more accessible and the multiplayer made it that much more interesting. Developed by Rare, you play as James Bond and go through the plot of the movie. As Rare does, much care was taken into this game. With other FPS titles at the time like Doom and Quake you shot the enemy and they died. Here if you shoot someone they will grab at their wounded area and other small details that brought life to this classic retro game. Let's jump into my 007 GoldenEye review!

      There are 3 versions of this game, US, Japanese and Pal. Only the Japanese is easier because you get all the bodyarmors on 00 Agent. Pal is the most advanced / fixed, but also slower due to 50 hz. There are no revisions like US 1.1 or 1.2. There is also a "not for resale" kiosk display version, but those are generally the same as the retail version, sometimes without a save option (Donkey Kong Kiosk being an exception). 1. I’m 99% sure a new save file has all three difficulties on Dam (the first level). 2. You can technically play Goldeneye in a double stick playstyle, plug in a controller into port 2, go into the options and head to the controller styles and shift to 2.X
    3. Heavy bias, but I feel like the whole speed running the levels for cheats makes the game and controls more interesting because it becomes more technically demanding in an interesting and satisfying way. Memorizing level layout, objectives, and enemy spawns as well as good movement using the 1.X style makes getting the cheats super satisfying to pull off

    • @josephjones7828
      @josephjones7828 4 года назад +3

      Having done a "100% completionist" on this game myself back in the day I can say the speed running for cheats was kind of a mixed bag experience. For the most part they weren't too bad and I liked the challenge, but their were a few that were a doozy (Silver PP7, Invincibility). Some of them required more than just skill and knowing the level inside out to unlock. There was also an element of dumb luck involved, like Dr Doak or the Helicopter black box spawning at one particular location from a handful of possible randomized locations or Natalia's clunky AI to behave itself during escort missions.

    • @RobotMasterSplash
      @RobotMasterSplash 4 года назад +3

      I just started a new file recently and I was able to start with 00 agent. For controls I strongly recommend style 1.2 with your left hand on the dpad for movement and right hand on the stick for aiming like a modern shooter. The 2 controller styles are quite clunky in practice.

    • @mrgameandmusic
      @mrgameandmusic 4 года назад +1

      RobotMasterSplash I believe 2.2 is the setting you want for the closest control to a modern shooter layout, but I won’t disagree that it feels weird to play with. • @RobotMasterSplash

      @@mrgameandmusic You really don't need analog for movement at all, it's just what we're all used to. That's why WASD isn't a weakness for PC fps players. 1.2 is just better in every regard.

    Whether it’s aged poorly or not there’s one indisputable fact. When it was new, we had never seen such realistic motion and environments like that on a console. Many of the sound effects were used in the Bond series so it felt like they took the films and gave them to you to play in! We could sneak around or go guns blazing! I was 20 when it came out and it was the first time I had to learn the consequences of your actions.

    • @alexmott507

      Real talk: If you want the game to feel better by today's standards, CHANGE THE CONTROLS. There's a control option that lets you move with the d-pad and aim with the stick, so you hold the left and middle prongs of the controller. The game instantly becomes so much more intuitive. I only discovered this in like 2016, and if I had known about it back in the late 90s, I would have DOMINATED my friends every match.

The D-Pad moves your character, the joystick aims, and the Z-Button is your trigger. The left shoulder button also acts as a sort of “Aim Down Sights”. Before you make unfounded judgements once again about me, assuming I’m posting opinions about a game I know nothing about or even questioning my liking of this show and my intentions for posting an opinion opposite to yours, I still go back and play Mario 64, Ocarina Of Time, Majora’s Mask, Pokemon Stadium 1, 2 , Snap, Banjo Kazooie and DK64 among others and still have a great time, so it has nothing to do with me no being able to enjoy older games. You shouldn’t have to switch your controls around to other setttings to make this game playable and the last time I played this game was a only about 2-3 years ago in multiplayer and it was a miserable time. I do have to ask, do you make these unfounded outlandish assumptions about everybody whenever they have an opinion opposite to yours? Not the best way to deal with others

      @@libertyprime619 not on the N64 and earlier consoles it wasn't. This wasn't the Switch or 3DS eras, back then everything was indeed stored on the cartridge and NOT the system, a feature achieved through the use of a built in Lithium battery, a practice that had been in use as far back as the NES era. This is why you could take your Pokemon Snap cart to Blockbuster and print out your favorite pictures back then, and you could take your Ocarina of Time save file that you played on one system and play it on another.
      Meanwhile, another James Bond licensed game, The World is Not Enough, required you to have a memory card (remember those?) plugged into the back of your N64 controller to save your game due to how it built upon some features from GoldenEye and added others like voice acting and more features from the Watch. Of course Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (either 1 or 2) also had saves stored on the memory card, and in both cases it was entirely because of size limitations.

    Loved this video.
    I have to tell you as an older millennial who learned FPS on this game the controls feel natural to me. I missed Halo, CoD, CS, and most of the other FPS that came later. I was having kids, working, paying rent and trying to get a decent job. Today I have a switch, PS5, and a large catalog of Steam games. When I play CoD I use 'Legacy' joystick layout. Back in the day I played Goldeneye with the two controller setup, one controller and one joystick in each hand. To me, and I all the others out there who I have to believe are like me, the controls are not only natural but comforting and familiar. I have completely decimated both of my teenage children in Switch Goldeneye with the N64 controller. It feels amazing. Showing up my Cod and CS loving teens in the FPS of my day, head shots, handicaps, and occasional intentional suicides to make it "fair", in Goldeneye have allowed me to show my kids I'm not just a happless noob. I and my partner were the first place finishers in the 007 tournament hosted by my University my freshman year. At every house party there was always a house Goldeneye champ. I still remember schooling one of those house "champs" drunk, one eye closed, and drinking straight out of a bottle of Captain Morgan. I know, and understand really I do, that the controls are awkward and weird to you. However, these were the controls of the time and for those like me the muscle memory comes flooding back as soon as we strafe with the right stick and turn with the right... and in this game we still dominate and it feels amazing!

    13:50 "there's no check mark/trophy to show I completed the time trials." well, not on the level select screen, but for Goldeneye the trophies ARE the cheats on the cheat screen. That's the display case. And saying "what's frustrating is you don't have to complete the time trials to unlock the cheats! you can just unlock the cheat codes!" what, like, you can unlock them with game shark codes or something? that's not a criticism specific to this game. You could say that about ANY part of ANY game. "I'm frustrated because I COULD just skip everything by putting in a code." what kind of criticism is that?
    "there's no reason to do the time trials other than 'i had to.'" what? that's true of everything in every game ever. I just don't understand this. If you just don't ENJOY the process of getting the cheat codes, then that's not a fault of the game. Normally i'd just say not to do it then. But obviously that's the name of this series, but saying it as a criticism is weird, "the game is at fault because it made me do something I didn't enjoy." no it didn't? .. just don't do it then?
    the point of time trials in games like this is to unlock new stuff. what else do you want to make them "worth it"?
    the reason I do the time trials is because it's the most exciting thing ever to crit path and get that time down. it feels great to have done it. the reward doesn't need to be much for me. they could even take away the cheats themselves. as long as you get the cool end screen and sound effect, it's worth it to me. obviously a cool trophy case or gussied up level select screen somehow would be cool, but not needed.

      I don't know. When he says Goldeneye "still holds up today against the FPS juggernauts", that made him lose a lot of credibility in my eyes. Even during that DECADE, Goldeneye was made worse than redundant through Perfect Dark. And then there's Halo and Timesplitters and Half-Life. No, I'm sorry. Goldeneye was indeed very important for console shooters, but it HAS aged badly (except the OST), is not relevant anymore, and it hasn't even been relevant since the release of Perfect Dark.
      It's a harsh thing to say, but Rare was just that good. They weren't content with revolutionizing things once with GE. They polished it to a shine and then added even more with PD.

When you're not just going for a completion, like in this video, good vid as always BTW, you had an N64 and this was probably one of the only games you had as a kid/teen and so it didn't matter how many times you had to play it because every moment was a joy and as maybe your only game at the time you wanted to squeeze every single drop out of it possible. 2/3 of perfect darks campaign with the ULTIMATE battle sim, and multiplayer polish makes perfect dark the better option imo. However, goldeneyes missions were all good to.

      GoldenEye for me. I never really got on with PD, and even on the easiest difficulty I just couldn’t beat the last level.

    personally i use the solitaire control scheme, its similar to modern fps games, with the dpad being movement, and the analog stick being look, with the triggers and a/b buttons being aim, fire, reload, and weapon switch respectably. it works alot better than the default control scheme

      @@KRASHPROJECT Golden Eye is overrated! Yes, game introduced cinematic story telling and has cool split screen multiplayer, but otherwise is was behind standard of PC shooters and in two years it was overshadowed with Half-Life and System Shock 2. Thing is that most praise is just nostalgia.

    The best controls for GoldenEye: Auto-Aim. Also, most of the guards are at eye level with you anyway, so you don't really need to use that R aim that much really.

    Okay, after watching the review, I noticed you left out details (like in the Rogue Squadron review)
    Beating the game once on any difficulty unlocks a truckload of additional characters for multiplayer mode. When you first start the game, you only have access to the named characters in the single player mode, but clearing that unlocks the other movie characters, including Mayday, Oddjob, Jaws and Baron Samedi alongside all of the enemy fodder and civilian NPCs. There is also an additional cheat code that unlocks even more characters beyond that.
    The time trials to unlock the cheats are also specific because you need to clear these based on the difficulty level. Yes, you can unlock these cheats in-game, but doing these time trials unlocks them permanently. While the save file tracks your current progress based on mission and difficulty. clearing all of the missions, including the bonus ones on 00 Agent marks that save file as simply 007

    Regardless of its objective quality, I absolutely *LOATHE* this game. To be fair, it's mostly because I only owned an N64 at the very end of its lifecycle, when it was cheap, and never owned this game... while my friends, who all owned N64's, _constantly_ made me play the multiplayer for this game when we hung out. Nothing will make you hate a game faster than constantly have your friends, who all get to practice all the time, wipe the floor with you all the time. Same with the Super Smash Bros games. I've come to hate these games with a passion.
    Is this game really good, objectively? Did it age poorly? Honestly, I don't know. The FPS genre isn't really my thing... I play them very rarely, for exceptions like the Borderlands games. And even then, I'm biased against playing on a controller... I'm only decent with a mouse and keyboard. I recognize that between my personal biases and my lack of familiarity with the genre, I can't give this game a fair review.

    Goldeneye doesn’t get enough praise for its level design. Compared to today’s linear shooters, the objective based structure and realistic building layouts are a breath of fresh air. I wish to god more FPSes would bring this style back.

    A very fair assessment. It hasn't aged well, and it would be impossible to do so after nearly 26 years, but it remains a masterpiece of pushing the N64 hardware and setting out new standards for FPS's. All of this on just a 96-megabit cartridge (12MB in real money). The credits on today's games read like a block buster film, but this was done by a small team who made up the rules as they went along, and it remains a quality product to this day.
