I strangely remember loving when the game would slow down... it felt epic lol, usually happening amid many explosions while fighting a large group. It was kind of like getting to watch it in slow motion :D Also, my favorite AI moment was whenever you'd kill one that had just started rolling and he'd complete his roll and stand up before suddenly getting knocked back lol
I've seen one where an enemy lobs a grenade and the explosion flipped another enemy head over heels cartwheeling in the air towards me and then land on his face, get up, and then do the killed animation.
My mom loved this game and beat it within a few days when I was a teen. I remember I'd get so annoyed because I'd invite my guy friends over and rather than chill with me they'd want to challenge my mom in the multiplayer mode. My mom was unbeatable and despite being a 47 year old woman with zero prior experience with video games at the time she was great at Goldeneye and would beat a bunch of 15 year old boys lol. As a result she got really into video games and bought a bunch of different consoles over the years. However none have compared to the fun and hours we'd spend on Goldeneye during my high school years. Another favorite was Turok 2 seeds of evil
I wouldnt ask for it back. was totally worth it. if anything, if I could go back, i'd use more of the time that I used to do homework for goldeneye and perfect dark
"Never Die Twice." It's You Only Live Twice mode. Come on, it is literally named after a Bond movie. All the multiplayer modes save for Normal are. You Only Live Twice, The Living Daylights, The Man with the Golden Gun, and Licence to Kill.
the guys a fool this game has over 30 weapons, at the time this was ridiculous for most shooters in fact all shooters, at the time i cant think of a shooter that had more?
Yeah it had a ton of weapons. Comparing it to Wolfenstein (3 or 4) Doom (7 or 8) Duke Nukem (similar to Doom) and Quake 1 & 2. Even compared to counter strike and battlefield it had more weapons. Some of them felt similar though. Still great!
My favorite weapon was always the remote mine. Fun fact: they clamp onto player models. If you can stealthily smack an enemy player with one? Their life is in your hands.
4:02 correction, multiplayer was added by 1 guy just 1 month before release. He worked after hours on it and they didnt even tell nintendo they were doing it until it was too late for them to say no.
I remember going to a friend's house and playing this... and going home and telling my roommate "Dude. We have to get an N64. This James Bond game is amazing!!"
excellent review Mike! GoldenEye 007 playing split screen with friends having pizza and soda pulling all-nighters at sleepovers... those were the days!
Me and three of my old school mates still to this day occasionally hook up for a blast on goldeneye or perfect dark, Nearly 20 years still going strong, Absolute classic game one of the best.
I lived, ate and breathed this game for years and I still have my original too. I even tried to remake it using the NightFire engine which is basically HalfLife using tools from gearbox. That was a pain because of crappy hardware, still sitting on my HDD. Speed running for the cheats was always fun people used to give my their games to get all the cheats for them at school, could have made money on that haha.
This is a great game that often overshadows the masterpiece Perfect Dark on the N64 by Rare in most peoples memories. I remember the combat simulator (multiplayer mode) had so much content. Many maps, weapons, bots, challenge modes, crazy number of game modes and much much more. Truly the most ambitious FPS title even to this day.
One of my favorite games of all time across all genres. Probably the most important shooting game and most influential ever. We might not have COD if it was not for Goldeneye.
FMLPLAYZ Lmaoooo i found that soooo hilarious. It was in the Frigate level, where i found out about that. I opened a door and there was a guard facing the other way. I had all the time in the world, and decided to shoot him in the ass. 5 year old me found it so funny!
ConnerTheWaffle same here. though I never owned the game as a kid, I used to visit someone who had the game and I would play the hell out of it during those good old days of when the best things of all time were Pokémon, Veggie Tales, and of course N64. SO MUCH NOSTALGIA.
The TV I played the game on circa 1998 made it really difficult to see anything in the Jungle stage. Someone I know likened it to Bond's plane having crashed into pea soup.
I got this for an early birthday present in 1997. So many awesome memories associated with this masterpiece. I got pretty good using two controllers (which is batshit stupid/crazy haha!).
Still one of my favorite games of all time. It's not just nostalgia speaking here. The music, the level design, the multiplayer, the sound effects...all top-notch. Even if the graphics are dated, the game is still a joy to play.
Bought "GoldenEye" for a 20DM from a buddy - best blind purchase ever! A year later or so, I bought "Tomorrow Never Dies" for PS1. I thought it might be equally great. I was so wrong...
I was 7 in '97. I'm getting chills of joy watching and hearing these sound effects/music again. As soon as this game came out I ran to my friends house down the street because he got it before I did on Christmas that year. Played it for years as a kid and young teen! Oh the Nostalgia
+zeropoint True. But with a bootleg controller? Mouse/keyboard? That’s always been my issue with going pc.. I like the authentic feel of the actual controllers I used/same exact gameplay more.
very good review, but what often seems to happen is that reviewers almost never talk about the music and sound effect specifics. and in goldeneye's case, much care was put into those things. pretty much every track is a sort of remix of the james bond theme, for example
Bacon some parts in the game did run weirdly fast. Specially towards the edges of the snow levels where there was nothing else in view. Like the roof skyscraper level on Mario Kart which would run in a sort of high speed fast forward mode. Don’t know if it is actual 60fps, but it did run over 30fps for sure and the time step of the game logic would also go faster.
Gold PP7 was much better than the Golden Gun. I don't know why some people keep pretending that the Golden Gun was "THE BEST!" of all the pistols - the only possible explanations are that they aren't aware of the Gold PP7, or they ignore it because it's too overpowered.
Still prefer to play this over many modern shooters because of its great campaign and cool weapons. Beating the game on 00 Agent, as well as earning all the cheats, is a really rewarding experience.

Fantastic breakdown. My best friend and I spent many hours and sleepovers playing Goldeneye on the N64. We were 11 when the game came out. So much fun and so many memories. Power weapons on facility was our favorite multiplayer mode.
This game is 100% nostalgia, back in the days when I use to watch fresh prince of bell air, kenan and kel, rugrats and WWF wrestling and listen to Eminem and backstreet boys, play games like Turok, F Zero X, Duke Nukem, Ocarina of time, Mario 64. Memories are just flying. I use to play this game with my brothers, how time just flies.
Mike, I remember plenty of talk about frame rates back in the 90's. Especially in racing games. Most reviews of 32X, early PS1 and Saturn games complain about frame rates.
Marty Moose I didnt have a saturn or a 32x until much later in my life. Perhaps it’s something I personally missed. But a lot of gaming terms that are common now, werent used as often back then. Anyhow, thanks for watching - Mike
From Russia With Love had great single player and multiplayer , and the classic 1950s style artdeco environment was great too. Nothing like a four man Spy Versus Spy match for chaos, or MI6 Versus SMERSH battle to really get planing and team work going.
If you choose "full" for screen, and "16:9" for ratio, it's full screen 16:9. There are also options for "wide" and "cinema" for screen, which will letterbox it. Regardless though, from what I can tell, if you want 4:3 to look right or 16:9 to look right you have to choose the correct ratio on both your TV and in the game.
Video Games And Such Pretty crazy how such an early N64 game supports a feature that even most 6th generation games, UNLESS they were on Xbox, either didn’t have or half assed (think back to GTA’s obvious hud stretch and cropping)
I got Goldeneye when I was 17 in 1997, and me and my friends played this nonstop for weeks. We even made a cardboard contraption to fit on the TV so we couldn't see each other's screens in multiplayer. Such amazing times because there was nothing like this then, and it is genuinely is a great game. Nothing will ever be able to replicate that experience of having your buddies actually playing side by side in the same room on a console FPS. I still play this on my 64 to this day, and Goldeneye will always be a blast.
Perfect Dark is better than Goldeneye, just straight up is. Both titles are fun, Perfect Darks multiplayer was fucking awesome. Awesome guns, bots, levels. Missions were a blast in both games, Perfect Dark soundtrack and sound effects were a blast to listen to.
That's what happens when a game requires the Expansion Pak and comes out 2 years later: better graphics/sound. Goldeneye was accessible to everyone, whether they had that add-on or not.
Idk, I like Aladdin, better, I just think it stood the test of time better. The Warriors and Chronicles of Riddick game (the one on the OG Xbox) I also think are better.
Dylan Croft Not sure how you're confused. I listed games that are based off movies that I think are better than goldeneye, which isn't a very good game anymore.
Dylan Croft Because Goldeneye is a terrible game now? It is the quintessential example of a game that aged poorly... and 2D platformers generally age fairly well?
Thanks for doing Goldeneye justice! Love how much was thrown in there that a lot of FPS games pulled from it. Perfect Dark was a great spiritual successor to Goldeneye.
I had a PS1 at this time, but was really jealous of N64 owners because of this game. I own it now, and have fun with it, but I missed out on its prime play window.
To be fair, speaking as an N64 owner that got PS1 only much later, you guys had great games too that we missed out on too. What's important is that we ultimately all get to play these greats ourselves, eventually.
But you had Gran Tourismo, Metal Gear Solid, Madden, Nba Live, Crash Bandicoot and Twisted Metal. The games on 64 that were great were incredible but PS1 had so many classic games. There's a reason Sony dominated that era.
Ps1 also had Armored Core, Einhander, Silent Bomber, Vanark, Raiden Project etc, if shooting and blowing things up was your thing, the Ps1 had that arena covered in spades. So overall I'd say you were ok lol.
remote mines and snipers where my 2 fav weapons in this game back in the day. me and my bro when we where younger did sniper games vs each other now and then at the time (simply using only snipers). we played around in an entrance of a certain area but that area had lots of snow in that outside part of that level. we always loved it
See Mike's live streams on Twitch! www.twitch.tv/mikemateilive
How did you get such clear footage? What are you playing the game on? An HD modded 64?

Mike definitely sucks at this game (no offense). lol.
Mike the Nintendo WiFi for Goldeneye is still active, in the UK. I'm not sure about in the US
He's finally on twitch, lol. Nice!
When we are old and decrepit, the futures retirement homes will have Goldeneye multiplayer parties.
One of the best ideas that Ive heard lately!!!
@Benjamin McCann Not as weird as when twister was introduced.

One of the best N64 games
Yes it was
It was THE BEST game of N64 by a long shot and one of the best of all time for any console
This and Ocarina of Time are the two best N64 for me.
It was the best until Perfect Dark came along :)
Smokey McJoint like what?
"There aren't a huge line-up of weapons" ?? What?? GoldenEye has the most weapons I've ever seen in a game!

goldeneye was amazing, but perfect dark was better, just a little though.
Sparc Mac yes. Perfect dark. Great game.

Whoever that man is, what an absolute legend. Singlehandedly made everyone's Christmas and years after that much special.

This game's a ton of fun. The way it aged makes it even more fun. Also, it's oddly satisfying to play with the original N64 controller.
Back in the day it was mind blowing.🤯
That pp7 sound effect, it's like music to my ears!
That's nothing compared to the howl of the rocket launcher & the following explosion and guys flying everywhere :)
The Pew-Pew 7!
I also loved that ricochet sound from the old Bond movies
it's quite unique to the Bond series because Bond himself in the movies never used the gun!
That was my favorite gun too.

It didn't really age well because of the N64's poor controls.

Goldeneye was accessible to everyone, whether they had that add-on or not.
glorius memories playing this 4 player splitscreen on an 14" tv back when I was a teenager=)
Goldeneye 007 is low key the best game based off of a movie
Idk, I like Aladdin, better, I just think it stood the test of time better. The Warriors and Chronicles of Riddick game (the one on the OG Xbox) I also think are better.
@@wschippr1 what..
Dylan Croft
Not sure how you're confused. I listed games that are based off movies that I think are better than goldeneye, which isn't a very good game anymore.
@@wschippr1 Aladdin better than GoldenEye how could anyone say that lol
Dylan Croft
Because Goldeneye is a terrible game now? It is the quintessential example of a game that aged poorly... and 2D platformers generally age fairly well?
This game gave me so much fun, playing it with my friends. I'll never forget this.
RPG-Multiplayer😄
Thos game is a masterpiece, so many fond memories.
This game was my childhood!! I miss the 90s and the Nintendo 64
Is perfect dark next?
Goldeneye's my favorite game of all time, now, I played Perfect Dark for my x360.
I'll watched goldeneye in the past. when i was little i really enjoyed this james bond movie
I think it’s awesome :)
The movie is awesome man. And the game got a lot of it in it!
great memories of that game, btw that intro switch just hit the bullseye!
I preferred perfect dark tbh. That game dominated my childhood
Thanks for doing Goldeneye justice! Love how much was thrown in there that a lot of FPS games pulled from it. Perfect Dark was a great spiritual successor to Goldeneye.
I had a PS1 at this time, but was really jealous of N64 owners because of this game. I own it now, and have fun with it, but I missed out on its prime play window.
i never had an n64
my childhood was spyro the dragon and crash bandicoot
The best FPS for PC players in that era was Half Life
Soon as you hear that music at the beginning ALWAYS wants me to play this again such a classic!!!
This totally brings me back. Love it! Great review.
Ooh, I'm loving the new editing style Mike.
My childhood.
remote mines and snipers where my 2 fav weapons in this game back in the day.
me and my bro when we where younger did sniper games vs each other now and then at the time (simply using only snipers).
we played around in an entrance of a certain area but that area had lots of snow in that outside part of that level.
we always loved it
I've been waiting for this moment for a long time
I remember playing this and Ocarina of Time so much. Fantastic games and memories.
proximity mines I found a glicked wall I would hide and put about three or four mines in the room everyone died.
That cut from Mario World music to Bond theme was amazing.
Yes! LOVE your reviews! Such great pacing, quality content.
this game brings back memories, goldeneye n64, splinter cell 1, hitman 2, vice city, mw2
