  • This is my first try for a lens test. Obviously it is highly inspired by the work of ‪@christopherfrost‬. I do honor his work and his way of testing lenses a lot.
I hope you liked this video and if you have some own experiences with the Leica Elmarit-R 135mm f2.8, feel free to share them and let me know in the comments.
    CU next time. :)

After switching from analogue to digital, I had a number of R-lenses. Instead of selling them off for money, I bought an adopter for my M240... for landscape, the R-lenses are superb. A very special lens is a 2.8/45-90 Pierre Angenieux for the R-system. Heavy but with insane colouring. Keep on rolling!

That was a wise step to keep your glass. When I was young, I always had to sell the old stuff to buy new gear. It worked since I sold the canon 5D and all my Glas for a Sony setup. That was the first time I regretted, selling a camera.
And luckily nowadays there are so many options with analog/digital/SLR/mirrorless/small/medium/large film… that a lot of old gear can get a new use again.
      Thanks for your comment. :-)

Coincidentally, I have just shot my first frames using the Leica R8 and 3-cam 135 mm f/2.8 Elmarit. Very pleased with the results. Thank you for the review.

Now with a little bit of distance and after testing a couple of 50mm lenses, the Leica Elmarits are really almost flawless. My Leica R8 had some issues sadly and repair was possible but far more expensive, than getting a new one. So I sold it with quite a loss, but it was really a cool camera to handle. :-)

Leica lenses are ultimate build quality and very good optic quality (not always the best for the old ones but still very good). With hybrid mounts buy rather old one cam than most modern 3 cams (made for R3 and more recent) which are most expensive but didn’t change a lot their optical formula. If you do some portraits take picture between f2.8 and f4 as you don t care of the edges, and for landscape f8 or f 11 and you will be happy. As these are rather heavy lenses don t hesitate to take heavy cameras or cameras with a grip and additional batteries to have a good balance. Panasonic S1 (half price of the Leica SL but same sensor) is very good for this. Leica R 1 cam are the cheapest Leica lenses you can find - Leica M are really overpriced - and their 90mm f 2 and f 2.8 and 135mm’f 2.8 are really excellent.

Great video! I just got this lens and it's lovely.
I suggest you to get a novoflex adapter, it's worth the money!

Thank you very much. I bought the metabones Adapter while making the video. I think it will be on the same level as the novoflex ones. As you can see in the video, the metabones is perfectly fine. 😄
