Have a case? I would say it's a better argument as to whether or not it's the greatest. I mean first team All-NBA, 4th in MVP voting, All-Star, and the 61-21 record cannot be understated as potentially the greatest rookie season we've seen to date.
Best rookie season! For a rookie to even get mentioned for mvp let alone finish 4th in voting! You haven’t seen a rookie get mvp talk since. And probably never will again? Not to mention averaging a double/double 21.3 ppg 10.4 rpg!
Bird has a case for the greatest ever rookie season = a 32 game turnaround with only 1 player added to the roster in ML Carr and a new coach in Bill Fitch. And again that was done without Parish, McHale, DJ, Walton or Ainge. Both Cowens and Maravich retired after the 1980 season as they were on their last legs, and Tiny Archibald had his numbers decline every year he played with Bird. Many may point to Tim Duncan and the Spurs 36 game improvement BUT it must be noted that in the previous season David Robinson only played in 6 games due to season ending surgery and Sean Elliott only played in 39 games. In the season before Bird's arrival, Cowens played in 68 games and Tiny played in 69 games.
It is also interesting that Bird was showcasing how he could pass so well at that time. He raised the teams that he played with, by getting everyone involved. He was a team player. I'm from Michigan, near MSU and was very happy that they won the national title that year. I also enjoy seeing Magic play because of his talent and also his personality, and also, because he always seems to be able to laugh at himself, but I totally respect and enjoy watching Bird.
All this is true, but not the part about Pete Maravich, he learned a lot from Pete and helped talk Red Auerbach to hiring Pete for his last season. Pete was at the end of his career snf had a heart defect. But, everything else about Bird is true.
This is why any team in history would or should take Larry Bird to start a team. Bird makes low level players way better. Bird's NCAA team was not even close to the talent Michigan State had outside of Magic. Put Magic on Indiana St. and Bird on Michigan St. The game would have never happened. Bird would have won the national championship and Magic would not have made it to the finals with him guiding Indiana State. It is what it is. Facts.
Does Larry Bird have a case for top 5 rookie seasons of all time?

Larry was a beast, younger generations today are not aware of that. He and 90's Pistons are main reasons why MJ didn't win ring earlier.
6-0 playoff record against Jordan
It took four seasons for Jordan to grasp the concept of "team play" while Bird was a complete player and top dog from day one.
The Bird entered the NBA as the boss, from day one. He left as the GOAT! The Bird is the greatest all-around player of all time.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Appreciate everyone here!! Been a great month doing Larry Bird content!! Like! Comment! Subscribe!!
