Why People HATE Longboarders...

- For people who don't skate (or are new to skating), it can come as a surprise to learn that skateboarders don't like longboarders. Even though I don't personally have a problem with longboarding, I've heard a lot of other skaters complain about it, so I feel like I have a good perspective on it. In this video, we go over why skaters hate longboarders.

Can some of you give me skating tips i just started about a month ago do it would be cool

Ok
Tell a longboarder to do skateboarding tricks and they probably couldn't do it. Tell a skateboarder to bomb a hill going over 50mph and they probably couldn't do it.
Although you’re probably right for the most part, there are a lot of skateboarders that will bomb hills on street boards. Which honestly is probably harder than on a longboard.
@@jakey7934 street boards don't go nowhere near as fast as longboards, due to the wheel size and the kind of bearings
@@jakey7934 what p-lego said is true they can bomb hills but like not nearly as fast and they physically cant get as fast, i hit hills with my street skater friend all the time. no matter the hill i leave him in the dust and he dosent go above 25mph, it may be harder but the scale isnt there it can be harder to a certain point but then it just isnt physically possible to push that point where downhill longboarding begins at that limit for the most part

As a new person to the community, these kinds of videos make me really sad because of how tight in a sad way skateboarding is. BUT happy because I can see something that I can do better on.
Don't be scared... I've never met anyone at any skatepark that thinks like the dude in the video, dude is that gatekeeper poser, that he claims to dislike.
bro skaters are probably the most welcoming, outside of skate parks, like you can own a skateboard and a long board.
They have different functions, a long board just costs 150$. And skaters are broke😂
Yeah, please don't believe this video one bit. I own a skateboard, cruiser, and longboard and use them all for different purposes. I have a group of skater friends who do the same. This is just sensational bullshit and doesn't reflect the community at all

Different mentality. I used to skate as a kid. Liked doing tricks and it was a blast. Loved pushing and challenging myself. Put it down for several years once college started. Recently rediscovered my love for being on a board. But I realized my mentality had changed. I don't care about tricks anymore. I just love the ride. To cruise. Put head phones on and explore. Maybe bomb some hills for a bit of an adrenaline rush but for the most part just relax and enjoy. That's kinda hard on a regular board. There's a huge difference between a standard 54mm skateboard wheel and the 85mm wheels I'm rocking on my board now in terms of ride quality, shear speed, and momentum. It's not even close. And yes I do use it as a means of transport and I think that's a perfectly valid reason. It's a great fun clean method of alternative transport. Skaters just need to accept that longboarders just don't have the same priorities that they do or care about the same things. Just live and let live brother

Was even like in the 80s the only time it wasn't toxic was when it went into terminal decline in the 90s, most countercultures are pretty toxic as some peoples enjoyment comes from hating everything else.
@iLoveJackingOn is that even worse? As someone who longboards the double takes you get from both the general public and skateboarders always amuses me I give skaters the bikers nod but they just usually ignore me.

I love grapes, and so do all my friends. We are all so annoyed with blueberries though. Blueberries, even when compared to purple grapes, don’t taste anything like grapes. 100% of the time they have a “blueberry” flavor… and that is lame. They don’t even grow on a vine. Try making grape juice with blueberries. 10 times out of 10, you can’t.
Also grapes and blueberries don't grow well in the same areas so the blueberries we eat are always bitter and measly
honestly an amazing way of looking at the comparrison of completely different boards
Great comment. What a lame video this is.
It took me over 2 decades to realize that it's OK to ride a board to actually go places!!! You don't HAVE to treat every board like a hackey sack.
To be honest I’m a longboarder most of the time and a skater some times but I recently put a surf skate on my longboard and I’m actually getting respect from more of the community now because the amount of people I’ve watched face plant with it is ridiculous
Ive got a Carver surfskate and totally agree. The skill required is different from skateboards, which feel like solid blocks of cement in comparison. Yet, from using my surfskate I've actually gotten much more control of balance on a regular skateboard.

I'm totally going to go to the skatepark and start telling skaters they should really get into software development
There are actually a lot of variations of powerslides and there is also the thrill in atempting them at high speeds, james kelly ( pro longborder, and others) do stand up slides ( no hands on the ground) at 70km/h

I got into long boarding later on in my teen years. My neighborhoods streets were really bumpy and riddled with pebbles and debris and I wound up hurting myself a lot on my cheap skateboard because of it. It also didn’t help I was trying to learn how to skate at the time as well. I was an avid biker but I wanted something more casual for cruising around. I remember the incident where I decided to switch. I was getting really decent at just going fast at this point, I was never interested in trucks because I didn’t care about impressing people I just liked the motion, my wheel hit the tiniest pebble and bucked me off. Of course with my luck this was right in-front of a pile of broken beer bottles and shards of glass my neighbor had thrown in the street. I tucked and rolled to protect my face but long story short I spent the night picking glass out of my back and arms. I decided I needed something heftier with thicker wheels and got a long board. It was immediately a better experience for me and exactly what I wanted from skating. Simple cruising while I listened to my music. And yes the tricks on long boarding are stupid but they are easy for people to pick up on and just fun to do. I haven’t been boarding in years but I remember my time doing it fondly. My main hobby has always been bass playing and after we moved I just sorta stopped. This video made me want to get back on my old board though lol
You can do it I'm 50 and have at least 5 landyachtz!
I’m 32 and refuse to get a car because of location, finance and other stuff. Really don’t need a car in a city!
Longboard is great, i get insane speeds and speedbumbs are never a problem, never faceplanted on pebbles (they shoot away unlike sk8board) go faster than traffic, great wakeup to work and keep my instincts sharp and a good workout.
Kids are always exited at all ages too to watch
Dude. Why don't you just use an actual skateboard?
"Shows back with several scars from glass" use that in my neighborhood and you'll feel why.
I hate the mindset that we can’t all just be part of a bigger community. Skateboarders act like it’s an exclusive club that you can only get into when you “earn your stripes” but by gatekeeping all you’re doing is making it harder for your community to grow and giving it a bad reputation.
There are plenty of good points in this video, like hating on posers who only get into longboarding for the aesthetic, but at the end of the day, everyone is trying to just have fun. Let everyone have their own brand of fun, and if you see some poser newbie struggling on a longboard, help them out instead of pointing at them and insulting them for not being “cool/good enough.”
This toxic gatekeeping mindset helps nobody and all it does is inflate egos. Skateboarding is VERY difficult, but it won’t grow if we push everyone who’s interested away.
Personally I love riding both and don’t see why I need to choose! Just riding any board is fun for me :)
Im a longboarder, I used to skate and still can. the reason i prefer longboarding just cuz i find it very enjoyable to just cruise around, and yes it is easier then skateboarding but thats also an up side for me. Its relatively relaxing to me.

Longboards actually came first. Surfers in California wanted to have something to do when the waves were dull. So they just made a surfboard with wheels. This shortly evolved to skateboards as making them shorter was better for tricks. When people figured out that you could jump with them, it opened up a whole new avenue and skateboarding started to become it's own extremely popular sport. In other words, a skateboard is to a surfboard, what a motorcycle is to a car. Both came from the same place, but one evolved from the other and went in a completely new direction. Longboards are just surfbords on land, they're meant replicate the feeling of surfing. However, longboarding too evolved into it's own sports. The 2 main ones are downhill and freeriding. Both of these are extremely different compared to skating and surfing and they deserve their own respect. There's also longboard dancing which is relatively new and modern.
So that means... Skateboarders are actually longboard posers! 🤯

Before I even clicked this video this argument about longboarders being hated by skaters made ZERO sense to me. I'm the only guy ripping bowls in my surrounding parks and not once has any skateboarder given me anything less than respect.
Here is a hot take: Any longboarder who is somewhat commited to using it as a mode of transport probably masters the basics of pushing, carving and footbraking much better than regular skaters.

This video is so weird to me because after reading a lot of comments, I see a lot of people share the same opinion and experience I do: I longboard, and I see skateboarding and longboarding as two different things that shouldn’t be compared. Also - I know skaters that literally encourage longboarding. Also, I’m a college student that works a lot .. and I wish I had time to lean tricks, but I literally don’t. I drive an hour back and fourth for work from home … I longboard to relax and release all negative energy and find positives. It’s peaceful and fun! Also: the speed! But literally- skateboarders and longboarders mostly seem to coexist peacefully from what I’ve experienced lol.
Let me also add that I have physical illness in the form of an inflammatory autoimmune disease that affects my breathing. Longboarding makes me feel free and helps me regulate my breathing … but I also don’t have all of the energy I wish I did to spend on learning tricks on a longboard, cruiser, or trick board. (I also use my cruiser boards a LOT)! There are many different reasons someone may choose to longboard over skateboard. Stop trying to divide those that do different things on different types of boards. Just let people have fun!
I’m glad I saw this input as I’m a college student that also works full time. I literally couldn’t be at a skatepark daily if I tried. However, my longboard is there for me whenever my schedule fits and it’s the greatest feeling of freedom!
I think most people are using both for fun now a days.
I'm afraid of the speed. I really should get elbow and knee pads before next year ends. I already have a helmat
Same here. My campus has a lot of hills so I just like to use my longboard to get around my campus, and have some fun going down hills. I don't really try to do tricks since my board was not built to do tricks, but it's fun to use it to get around
as someone who is going to get into longboarding i’m just getting on to ride around and just think, it is also is pretty cool way of transportation
And tbh, they’re way better than regular skateboards for travel.
Recently I've been learning to longboard as both a form of travel and exercise
EY man, done both for a long time and love them both equally. There is a large down hill racing culture in Australia, and as someone who has experienced both it takes significantly more balls to come down a hill at 70+ kms then kickflip a stair set.

Of course longboards can’t do tricks(they can but it’s way harder), they’re not meant for that. The only similarities are that both have wheels attached to a board. As for “power sliding” with softer wheels , which longboards tend to have, you get more traction so you need more speed and force to initiate it. I practice both sports and I don’t think it’s fair to compare them in the same category.
this is super well said, the two are similar in that they are both skateboards but they dont have the same purpose. its like saying a meat cleaver is bad cause you cant fillet a chicken breast with it.
Exactly they can't be compared.
Yeah I totally agree. In other hand you have a lot of tricks that u can't do on skateboard, for example tiger claw, aerograb etc...
I'm 45 and I started longboarding 3 years ago as a fun mode of transportation. I have not desire to learn tricks. Now that my 11 year old son has picked up skateboarding, it's fun to go out cruising with him. Only thing I learned from this video is to stay away from skateboarders as they will do nothing but judge me.
I loved longboarding as a kid. I've been skating since I was 5~6 years old, but there wasn't many places around my home with stable ground to practice, and the closest skate park was like an hour long walk at least. When longboards became a fad around when I was 12 or so I got really interested in it because the big wheels made it very easy for me to just ride around despite the messy terrain. As I got older and had less time to practice tricks on my skateboard the longboard was the one of the few things that got me out of the house since it was so easy to have a good time with it. That said, both of my boards were, and still are very precious to me.
Notice how people longboarding tend to have a lot more safety gear on than skateboarders? You see that, and you know they're serious. If you can powerslide on a longboard and drop hills, good for you, because that's an incredible skill (very dangerous though). Also, I agree with a lot of the other comments, longboarding and skateboarding aren't meant to be comparable in aspects such as tricks and 'aesthetics'.
This is the first time me and many of my skate friends heard this argument, I mean a 13 year old might think this but all of us in my community don't really care if someone longboards, we even encourage it to non skaters because it's great stress relief and keeps you from being cooped up in your room all day
Dogs love it too! My dog is super high energy and needs really long walks, or she needs to run around. Since I don't have a fenced yard I taught her to follow me on the leash. We have a bunch of super gradual hills near my place and she basically jogs next to me while I cruise down the hills on my longboard. She absolutely loves it, and she wouldn't get this kind of exercise otherwise.
I think longboarding can be a great 'gateway' to traditional skateboarding. At first cruising around the city at high speeds gave me quite an adrenaline rush...it was great but after a while it got boring...thats when I got into traditional skateboarding (learning tricks and whatnot). Traditional skateboarding will never get boring for me, theres just so much to learn and do!
And BTW I still enjoy longboarding, why not have both?
I skateboarded for 20 years, and still do a little. However, I took up longboarding (mainly freeride) in my early 30s in order to save my knee after a few injuries from big slams and the gym. Honestly, the skills aren't completely transferable, and I'm struggling a lot to unlearn some of the habits I've picked up skating a normal deck. Slides are completely different, and managing your speed is so much harder on 72mm soft wheels. I was definitely a judgemental skater in my younger years, but after growing up, it all seems a bit dumb to gatekeep so much. Longboarding is a completely different sport at it's core, but we are all just riding around on planks of wood with four wheels at the end of the day.
I’m sorry but bombing mountain runs and sliding takes more balls than kick flipping down a set of stairs. Both disciplines are hard….also this video is dumb there’s a huge longboard community and events all the time
I’m sorry. It you’re comparing absolute peak level longboarding to pretty amateur skateboarding. Kickflipping a stair set would be more like bombing a small hill. A backside lip slide down a 20 stair handrail takes way more balls than riding down a hill.
I think of longboarding more like riding a bike. You got the extreme people in tight suits and helmets. People who commute. People who ride for enjoyment. We all enjoy things a little bit differently.
yo facts tho. longboarding is closer to the aspect of biking than it is skating
It is closer to riding a bike if you only use it for cruising yeah. Tho you can do alot more with it then that depending on the board you've got. I personally love board dancing/walking and a bit of freestyle tricks

Folks who ride longboard or do both seem to be way more educated in the sport. Most skaterboarders don't even understand how wheel size and hardness effect speed, or board size and shape or different truck types and bushings, etc.
@@justjon1852 Big facts. I do both and I'm the tech head to every popsicle skateboarder I know/meet. Meet advanced(amateur) shortboarders and they don't know what duro means. Don't know to change bushings when blown...
Popsicle exclusive riders also often believe waaay more tech 'myths' or hyperbole also: risers affect pop. Harder duro means easier slide regardless formula. Wheel size fatally affects air tricks down to 1mm difference. Boards can't be more than 0.0001 of an inch different or nothing is possible on them and forget all tricks.... And God forbid thinking wax is never needed, or that tiny 101a 40mm wheels have any benefit besides being a pebble trap
Shortboarders believe their setup has to be exactly one shape and size because of the industry standard popsicle, yet almost all tricks are possible on every shape. 8:09 this is so incredibly wrong. Unlike skateboarding, longboarding isn't about just "learning the trick" , it's about being able to do it at higher speeds, slide for longer, get better style and more consistently land the tricks. Notice how similar these metrics are to skateboarding ?
Not to mention there are literally a hundred different powerslide variations to learn, and then double it for them all learn again switch.
It's pretty obvious the creator of this video, did very little research into the actual culture of longboarders. These guys are almost always dedicated to the community, and have hella downhill events - far more than there are skateboard competitions.
the same argument can be used with skating, but skating has a higher skill ceiling

@@ethannderyakabuski5749it's not even remotely close. Everything longboarders do is 101 for street skaters.
i think the main reason of this is because people tend to compare these two things which are obviously made for two different purposes. skateboarding was made for doing tricks and longboarding was made for getting from point A to point B, but people tend to round them together for both being a board on wheels.
Most skaters don't care, just skate and have fun. But you know there are those who dress like a bum and hop one too many wooden toys and probably landed on head too many times.
Well, actually skateboards were made to emulate surfing on asphalt - tricks came later.
@@kai_plays_khomus sorry my bad. you're right. you know what i meant. 👍
@@guridurituriduri
Yep, it's a little nitpicky - I got what you meant. 😅
But actually I wanted to imply that the roots are the same, and in my opinion the kind of gatekeeping skateboarding as done in this video is pretty ridiculous. I "trick skated" for many years and never experienced a rivalry between skateboarding and longboarding - and I can't wrap my head around the "feet or hands on the ground during tricks is bad" either. Ironically in the early 70's skateboarding had developed into an ice-skating like, very regulated "sport", and when the Zephyr Boys who essencially laid the groundwork of skateboarding as we know it today introduced their surfy style in contests it was discussed to disqualify them because they had their hands on the ground occasionally.
Appearently modern skateboarding closed the circle and became a ballet style sport again where you have to do flips on stairsets to be considered a "real skateboarder"..
For me there is only one skateboarding with many different but equally justified disciplines so to say - I got really excited when I stumbled across the canadian "Concrete Wave" magazine in an airport shop in Prague which featured pool skating, longboarding, downhill, slalom and other racing disciplines which are usually hidden in the shadow of modern streetskating. It celebrated skateboarding as a whole, and although I should have felt offended I found the slogan of a downhill skateboard advertisement really funny:
"take a stand - tricks are for kids"
For me it's all about fun and creativity.
There's a part of a guy in Heroin Skateboards' video "Earth Goblin" who has a foot down at almost every single trick, but it's so creative and produced such impressive street and pool skating that I would prefer it in place of yet another part full of flips down stairs at any time.
@@kai_plays_khomus great points! thanks so much for sharing 👍
People who are og in the skating community don’t give af what color, shape, speed or aesthetic of the type of deck u ride. There’s no rules in this sport so real ones just like to see others just like them shredding and having fun. Don’t be fooled by this video, MOST of our community is mad chill.
Took my surfskate to a skate park for the first time a week ago. I've gone 4 times since. Yes, I feel completely alienated when i walk in... a female with a Carver board... even more so when a teen yelled "pu$$y skater" at my back... but you know, I've got the longest board out there >:]
Honestly, past the obnoxious "skater bros" making the most noise and complaint, everyone else is nice and chill. It was easy for me to get ahold of the general "rules" of the park. The learning curve in skating different terrain was difficult, but isn't that why you gotta keep trying? How many hours do some people spend practicing at the park? I show up and despite having a very good grasp on how to work my board, I struggle. A lot. I kept at it and got better! The point on limits is well... a limited perspective. Im not very familiar with skateboard tricks, therefore I see the same kickflip or whatever else they call it. I enjoy the majority of skaters in the comments arguing against many of the "hate." Some guy at the park complimented my board, which I dare say is pretty sick.
I step on a board and feel so stuck! It doesn't turn! Ah!!! Like, wow. They're different! On my Carver I can ride and turn with one leg for a while, even tighter turns! Hell, I can go surfskate and never touch the ground, carving and cruising for miles. Which. Is a workout oh my God. The comparison thing just doesn't work. Kinda feels like "not to be racist but..." So, be kind? Even to "posers" because you never know who might drop their board and give up because of content like this. Or never pick up a board. Im a female skater of MANY years. People ask me if i "actually" skate. I walk with it and get the looks. The scrutiny. Its so. Uncomfortable. When I see girl skaters of any age I feel so prideful!! Whatever they're riding on. I dont care! There are more important things than the size of your wheels and skape of your deck. Go out and have fun on whatever suits your feet best, and never think you can't tru other things. The fundamentals are all the same. Just push and go.
God. Rant over. I could go on for as long as I can skate without touching the ground :)
"This one might seem kind of petty" these all are lol
Their is a massive longboard dancing and freestyle community in France, Russia, China and most of South East Asia. And it's growing in places like the UK thanks to people like the dock sessions. So their definitely is a community for longboarding
Longboarding has quite a lot of communities but it doesn't look like much because the communities specializes in their own respective skills(if that makes sense)
@@vincentsomna57 honestly I feel like you just haven't seen how the longboard community operates. There's almost weekly freestly and dance meets and competitions in places like China and even in the UK we have weekly meets that include freestyle dance and downhill and street. The community is massive and growing and very active. The fact is its ten or so years younger than the skateboarding community so it isn't as recognised
Longboarders are more chill and laid back - and dress nicer too I noticed.
@@vincentsomna57 it does make sense, theres tons of events and what not but its easy to pass by the media because you focus on your style
so much in South Korea Right!
What this fails to go over is the aging aspect. I literally can't do certain things anymore because of lower back pain and multiple sprains or breaks. Longboarding is a way that I can still enjoy skating, but is generally safer on average. So if its a choice between longboard skating or no skating, I'm going to longboard.
I used a longboard to learn the basics and then transferred over to a skateboard to learn the tricks
This video is inaccurate the thing with longboarding is it's meant to be smooth and flow while going at high speeds skateboards can do tricks but have you seen skateboarders go 50mph+ down huge hills
I have seen a lot of them (boys and girls) fall in a hill I bomb in pennyboard. Just enjoy however you want, and be cool and friendly to fellow mates with wheels.
Never
Bro I am a skateboarder and I respect all skaters
👑
based, I agree (except scooter kids)
Hey dude, your videos are great we want to see you build some skate ramps. Where is those videos?
I got a longboard for the reason that I would mostly use the board for cruising around my city and just going on a day-to-day basis so I decided that I would get a longboard now and then when I want to actually go to skate parks and do tricks, I would buy myself a normal skateboard which I feel like skateboarding versus longboard comes down to what you’re using it for
I am a aggressive rollerblader from back in the mid 90s, and mountain biker this got me annoyed for the long boarders. This really makes a skateboarders look and sound a bunch of immature pricks. Also 10 years into a hobby such skateboarding is nothing in the grand scheme of things.
They ARE a bunch of immature pricks. I’ve been skateboarding for 20 years and they’ve barely gotten any better, especially online.
As a Skateboarder I really get irritated When Other Skateboarders Hate The Long Boarding, Scooter, Rollerblading And maybe even the Bicycle Community’s And then It Creates A Stereotype and Then People Think that All Skateboarders are like this.
This reminds me of the parkour vs freerunning "debate". Free runners tend to look down on parkours guys because it's "easier" missing entirely that they're different, but related disciplines. One is tricks and style, one is speed and efficiency. Don't really understand the inherent pissing contest from these trickers to us speedsters
So in conclusion you're saying many skateboarders mentally never pass the age of 13. Good thing there's other kind of skaters too.
i skateboard and longboard i enjoy both they both have they're perks and i dont hate the other just for board preference
same
Most do. It's just a few bad apples that make up the bad skate image. ie.. the bum hopping on a wooden toy that nobody gives a crap about.
@@dukebimboton4773 true
congratulations on presenting an entirely bias view on longboarding while claiming to be neutral. the essance of skateing is to not give a shit... a long board is still a skateboard...i stoped rideing street boards when i was 22. im now 38 and i still dont give a shit about rideing my longboard.
Skateboarding is often considered a fringe activity and is not really accepted by the general public. For such a group to be judging WITHIN THEIR OWN group, it indicates that maybe skateboarding deserves it's bad reputation.
I have a long board that is meant for street skating:
Never summer assault.
I used to take it down 3-5 stairs, power slide, and bomb hills. You could Ollie it, but it did not have a curved nose.. so it wasn’t super easy.
It’s too bad never summer stopped making boards
As someone how’s only skated and dabbled a tiny bit in roller blading, I’d assume it’s much more scary to go down a hill at 50+ mph than do skateboarding tricks.
Fr yes you don't do many tricks but you can also do races and racing on a normal skateboard is extremely hard because its hard to push on and it doesn't go fast due to its wheels but with a longboard its meant for speed and cruising which is a great thing for racing and racing down a giant hill would be so much more terrifying then a few tricks on a skateboard.
I mean, there are several entire shows dedicated to skateboarding injuries, soo... I got a concussion during my first attempt at a drop-in into a ramp (I was also a dumb fatass at the time).
There's plenty of potential to just die or end up crippled doing either of these.
@@derdingobaronbut I’m comparison a concussion is a baby injury, heck even breaking your wrist is a small injury in comparison to getting road rash up and down your body with your flesh strewn across 20 feet of asphalt in addition to breaking bones.
as a downhill longboarder and park skater, yes.
this is a bad comparison. what you're comparing is the peek of longboarding with run of the mill stuff. The comparison should be insulting to what you're trying to espouse. What you should be comparing it to is grinding long rails or jumping gaps or dropping in, all of which are terrifying.
How can you really call a longboarder a poser for flying down hills at 50+ mph, it takes a lot of practice and time
Fr just cus it’s meant for cruising and not tricks. and this video give skateboarders a bad rep because most of them are chill and don’t care
imagine people who do tricks on BMX was making fun of anyone riding any other bike
To skaters who shit on longboarders, try to bomb a hill without falling off and get a broken ankle and broken arm going over 30 mph and call us posers.
I used a long board to get to the skate park. I got clocked by a cop going over the 35 mph speed limit of the road. Do that trick "go fast"
"As someone in the skateboarding community for over ten years..." One sentence that explains it all. So you've been skating since 2011? I started skating while you were still swimming in a furry bag.
Idk man board sports should show love for each other all around. I primarily skateboard but sometimes you just feel like going mk11 down a hill without dying because you didn’t see a small crack in the road. And honestly long-boarding feels more like snowboarding and that’s big w for me.
Appreciate the video! Lot of stuff to put in there! Good!
This video was clearly made thru the eyes of a skater and has zero imput of an actual longboarder. Yes we both ride a piece of wood, with trucks and 4 wheels, but we are not the same. Yes longboarders can do "tricks" but longboarding is far more diverse than skateboarding. Or maybe just as diverse. In what would be classified as "longboarding" there are different categories, that require different set ups and technique which all require a lot of time and effort to "earn your stripes" freeride, dancing, and downhill / racing just to name the most common. I personally do downhill/racing, and freeriding. It was untrue when you said something about there's not anywhere to go once you've mastered the few "tricks".. that is farthest from the truth. There's always something new to learn, new hills to bomb, events to go to. Downhill longboard racing is on its way to the Olympics, anybody who's interested look up "world skate games Argentina 2022 downhill skateboarding" I dislike "posers" as much as the next person, but not all longboarders are posers, just like not all people who wear thrasher hoodie is a poser. 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
Longboarder here. I would put it this way: there are many more posers in the amount of long-boarders at your park than skateboarders at the skatepark. I don't like the mashup of people who buy some cheap-ass board, don't loosen the trucks or change anything about it, and ride it around the riverside getting in people's way (and also carrying it a majority of the time). Get past those people. Longboard in private or on roads and it's a fun activity. Longboard 50 mph down a road with slide gloves and it's an extreme sport.
Longboards are not built for doing tricks. You also mention putting your feet or hands on the ground is ugly or disliked when literally some of the most popular skate tricks are boneless, no complys, and hand plants. You don't need to put one million hours into skateboarding to become a "non poser"
well most people choose too longboard for transportation, or just cruising around for fun. a lot of long boarders aren't trying to be cool like skate boarders are.
It’s funny how they say that longboarders are trying to look cool. Most longboarders get hate for it and they do it because they enjoy it. On the contrary, I knew so many kids growing up as a skateboarder who picked up skateboarding for the sole purpose of looking cool. The projection is borderline insane with them
@@HieronymousLex very true
I got a more simple explanation. Skateboards are for people who likes tricks while longboards are for people who like speed.
Why would I dedicate my life to a skateboard? Wheels are a great mode of transportation and wheels without fossil fuels is even better
I have been skating for some years now and I don't hate longboarders or scooters. Just have fun don't let anyone keep you from that. Just do what you want to do
Lol youtubes new most replayed feature playing over the frame of the "but" conjunction is the funniest thing I've seen today
I can't believe this crap is still going on. They're BOTH SKATEBOARDING. Skateboarding has many facets and disciplines, and what people see as stereotypical or "mainstream" skateboarding is literally just ONE of them. Your typical standard "popsicle" shape didn't even start appearing until around the 90s, and skating has been around since the 50s. Those who ride those "popsicles" don't suddenly get to lay claim to the term "skateboarding" and call everything else something different. Heck, much of the style and mentality that supposedly makes them different was all blurred together on the same boards back in the 80s (just watch the Bones Brigade").
You can also see many of these dividing lines shattered just by watching some old videos by Gravity Skateboards. What people call "longboarding" (which isn't even a verb btw) is really just "traditional" skateboarding. And saying that someone isn't a "skater" just because they don't skate the most popular styles is some of the most pompous elitist BS I've ever heard.
And as a response to the 3:10 part of the video: the VAST majority of skaters who end up quitting skateboarding after just a few years, are street skaters. In many cases, because it was more an "image" thing to them than for actual fun or lifestyle.
I'm just sick and tired of street skaters having NO respect for skateboarding other than THEIR one little sliver of it.
Well it’s true. There are a group of gate keeping skaters out there always bashing on everything that isn’t skateboarding. But no one should care what they think anyways. It’s not like they care about what others think either, “counter-culture” or what not. There are lots of supportive skateboarders and long boarders too that truly love the sport, and ride purely for the enjoyment and not just to fit in with the elitist crowd. I say, “Grab any kind of board and just SKATE!”
Dude this vidio and comment section is wack .
Skateboards were invented for sidewalk surfing and it evolved from there.
Skaters do things now we only dreamed about when I was a kid .
I could never ollie let alone kick flip doesn't mean I'm not I'm not skater .
I wanted to skate not flip my board around for hours hoping I land on it.
Standard board from my day was about 30 inches anything much longer feels awkward to me.
I respect the kids these days and their fancy tricks , I have respect for the down hill crowd , I have respect for people who just roll around having a good time .
It was a sad day when gatekeeping became part of the skateboarding.
In my day the rich kids daddies build them ramps and they thought they were better then us who skated ditches and parking lots . It was really lame
Skateboard to me is about freedom without boundaries, go have fun , do your thing and enjoy
@@damionmarkham9835 Right on brother! Just skate.
Bro I longboard cuz it's relaxing. Could give 2 shit about how I look to " real skaters" not doing it for them. I'm too old to worry about if I can skate like I used to for the younger generation.
As evidenced by this guys channel, “real skaters” are a bunch of toxic divas anyways. Who would even want to have anything to do with someone like that
i started skateboarding again a few months ago and its a lot of fun. ive also been debating on grabbing a long board for local commutes though
Im a 16 year old who started skating again, i got a longboard just a week ago and tried it today. It was new to me and i went down a hill to fast and fell (lmao) for those who had skated for a long time is there any tips you can give? Both longboard and skateboard tips would be helpful 🙏😭
A big aspect for me is that in my country the roads are shitty and the skate parks are small, few and far between. Also there is the fact that almost no longboard dance moves damage your shoes, neither does a failed attempt damage your board so it is way more cheaper to invest in a good longboard that may easily last over a couple years (with an occasional bearing/wheel change) than switch a board and a pair of shoes every few months.
Edit: I still love both and I have a balanced group of skaters and longboarders. I love the style and look of a skateboard rotating in seemingly random directions and landing on it like it is second nature, but I also enjoy the feel and flow of spinning a 7lbs wooden board with "no effort" using a hand and the wavy moves it carves in when you dance on it.
Basically ride whatever the fk you want as long as you are a decent human being. Relax and spend your free time as you wish as long as you don't harm anyone.
Skateboarders hating longboarding is like bmxers hating people that just ride bikes.
Fr I would count a longboard as a skateboard since they're very similar just like a bmx bike and a normal bike
NGL I love longboarding because it's fun. After some surgery I couldn't do skateboard tricks like I was when I was a kiddie. My granddad used to take me to the park where I would enjoy it when it was empty.
After that surgery when I was a youngster, I had to stop doing the things I loved for the sake of my health. As we all grew up, I grew apart because I couldn't do the activities they did. I got into highschool and one of my friends had brought her longboard. I was really curious, you mean I could still skate without doing all the stuff I used to do?
I know it seems foolish, yeah but that's what attracted me to them. That rush, that feeling, that excitement was back again. It was like physical therapy and emotional healing. I slowly got into long distance pushing, surf skating, that stuff. I couldn't get that rush with a bicycle I did with a board.
Even now my interest has moved into cars and motorcycles. I still board from time to time on modified drop deck that's turned into a pavement surfer.
I'll keep it in my trunk for emergencies or if the weather seems right, a nice jaunt around downtown.
I've met plenty of former skateboarders who went longboard because they were unable to ride a skateboard like they were younger. A buddy of mine had a bad motorcycle accident and went to longboards, realized he loved bombing hills.
Most of the culture of longboarders seem to be secular to skaters. You got these guys who just love doing other sports similar to longboarding like surfing, wave riding, all that. Then you got the grumpy skaters who feel emasculated by someone having a bit of fun.
Skateboarders have fallen victim to herd mentality of HAVE to do tricks. Longboarding has progressed passed that and most just enjoy the ride.
So, basically you are saying skateboarders are a bunch of pretentious elitests. Big difference between not liking to do SOMETHING and not liking SOMEONE.
The ones who don't like longboarding make sure to let me know they don't like the skaters either. I do both and I started from a hardcore street skater. The hate is real and it's completely misguided
Longboarder here, I use it mostly for transportation. Sometimes I do downhill racing with my drop deck. But other than that I just commute to and from work.
i used to skateboard but then i realized that i dont really enjoy skateparks or doing trick and used it more as a form of transportation so then i decided longboarding would be better i still want to get back in to skateboarding. im going to actually try and learn skateboarding but my longboard wil always be my go to transportation method
Most honest and true skater description: "[they] just hate everything." So funny! So true.
I'm a SKATEBOARDER and i don't devote my life to it. i like doing as something fun and a hobbie. There is nothing wrong with that so some of the things you said in this video were pretty unreasonable
I rode a "longboard" at a skate park for about 3 months before i could afford a skateboard
@iLoveJackingOn yes very
@iLoveJackingOn If you're talking about the "real" ones in skateshops. So many deck shapes and sizes, wheels, trucks, bushings for different styles.
I've been to plenty of skateparks big and small with my longboards and everyone I've met is super nice. Don't think I've ever met someone who hates on me because I ride a different kind of board than them. A lot of times, I'll find a group of people and we'll swap out our boards and always have a good laugh on how different they feel. They always mention how secure it feels and how it feels like they could just go anywhere with it. Then I'll always say that because I'm used to my board being longer and heavier I'm not used to a smaller lighter board and it feels like there's nothing under me so I'm actually scared to go down a ramp with it.
It's always a good time with other people. You be respectful to them, they'll be respectful back.
