Mongo pushing is something that a lot of skateboarders hate on, or at the very least don't really like. A lot of new skaters (and even some experienced skaters) don't understand why skaters don't like mongo pushing, so I thought it was worth making a video explaining the reasoning behind it. There's been a few other people who've made similar videos, but I feel like some good points were missed, so I wanted to make my own.

The thing is: mongo exhibits child-like motor skills, when you want what you're standing on to be visible in front of you so as to facilitate placing your other foot back on and facilitate balance. If you've skated for a bit, you should be comfortable enough, through muscle memory, to place your back foot behind you onto the board. Proper skateboard etiquette. Mongo just looks disgusting. I think a lot of representation of mongo pushing is usually by people over exaggerating the motion because they think it’s funny (and it is) but Mongo doesn’t have to look like that. After pushing, you should place your front foot back on the board, then shift your back foot. Pushing regular doesn't require the foot shifts, just a foot rotation, so it is easier.

I'm 37 and can skate mongo or regular. The point about taking longer to adjust your feet might be true if you're bad. You just take a tiny hop and position both feet at the same time. You have to adjust both feet in either stance, so it's a pretty bs point. Plus, it's better for getting more power out of your pushes. And the whole rocks thing is bs too. It's easier to bail into a run when your foot is on the back of the board because you're weight isn't leaning forward. Not to mention better steering while pushing because you can lean the board up and turn it.
Both styles have pros and cons, but I think the guy who made this video just doesn't know how to skate mongo.

Learning the standard push takes maybe an hour or two for even super new skaters. Relying on bad technique as a crutch is not a good habit to make it you want to actually improve at skating. I promise that if you learn to push standard instead, you'll realize how much controlled and stable the board is standard and never go back to mongo. Trying to push mongo is like trying to eat soup broth with a fork because you like forks, when a spoon is different to you but works 10x better after you switch. It's still your choice to use the fork, but you're only making things harder for yourself because the better option is out of your comfort zone. Push yourself, get better, grab the spoon and you'll finish that soup way faster.

If you can give me one reason that I can’t debunk that also proves standard pushing is better the Mongo I will literally switch right now. I’m convinced it’s all just lack of trial so people complain about the other push technique because they never learned the other side.

As someone who learned mongo first...he’s pretty accurate. Other than going over cracks, it’s actually easier to push over a crack mongo because your weight is in the back, it has never threw me off direction. But yea it looks weird, there are more steps to get set up for tricks it’s a struggle. But guess who got good at it and learned the correct way also. Pushing mongo is like doing a kickflip where ur actually kicking the board down on the side to make it flip then bringing ur foot back up and landing it. Its still a kickflip… but it doesnt look good and its not the most effective way to do it , but its still a kickflip. A lot of people back in the day learned like that and struggled hard to learn the proper drag up and flick method of kickflipping which is most common today. I think most people that push mongo just dont want to re learn pushing cause it feels so basic and they can already do better tricks , but in the long run its worth it to learn to push with your back foot so you can set up faster for your tricks and stability when pushing very high speeds. It sucks for a few weeks but then u will be normal and with the advantage of being able to push with both legs so when you skate switch ur super clean :) have fun skating regardless tho guys thats the most important thing dont matter how u do it

Na bruh I skate mongo cause it’s my preference. I can skate goofy but na I only ride goofy in parks tbh. And mongo skating I’m pretty sure came from longboards cause I was a long boarder well before I started skating at 22. So ya I’m not gonna relearn to push just to satisfy y’alls eyes 😂😂😂 skating is meant to be rebellious. So why go hate is the only thing, cause the dudes who just hate on me when I ride mongo in the streets 🤣 y’all just look goofy hating and trust me us mongo pushers laugh. You can say it has less balance but it’s all on preference like I said I learned snowboarding then longboarding and when I learned to skate it was wack learning to ride goofy. Having more weight on the front foot means you couldn't get over uplifted cracks, rocks and broken glass. We didn't olly yet. Having weight on the back meant you could step over the problem , weight the front and lift the tail over the obstacle.

Everyone who was at the park were mongo pushers, but I went regular and not mongo. Now, I think mongo is not as cool looking cause not as many did it in the pro level, so it didn't catch on as cool. Now, it appears it is more normal to see in the pro ranks so it is more accepted. Mid 80s didn't see a pro back push except Rodney mullen doing a flat run, but he could push anywhere and any way possible.
