- Janis Putelis heads back to his family’s Wisconsin farm for the whitetail rut. He’s seen some tough hunting in past years, but this season, a cold front’s pushing through the Upper Midwest, and the bucks are on the move, rutting hard. Janis sticks it out in his saddle all week long, braving the cold. After a long stretch of action-packed days, he finally gets his shot at a solid buck.

Jannis’ rut in stand meltdown/sanity check is one of the most relatable things I’ve ever seen in hunting media.
Changing accents, nonsense talk and just that mental grind.
Amazing!
Thank you for sharing this side of a hunt. Gotta hurt to the core. Once again MeatEater doesn't shy away from the many realities of hunting. Appreciate that nuance! Cheers, Janis!
Long time Meateater fan. This is one of the best videos you have ever put out and certainly one of the best detailing the trials and tribulations of bowhunting.
I love how day 6 makes Yani talk with an accent hahaha! I love the delirium that happens after days of sitting in a stand
The ramblings of a whitetail bowhunter…good stuff. Best of luck this season!
Dude we need to just give Janis a camera and say OK go hunt, record your thoughts🤣🤣🤣🤣 sooo funny. Ya start to go a bit looney hanging off the side of a tree for a week hahaha
Awesome hunt. Thanks for sharing
I can't imagine the relief you feel to see that buck upright
@26:22 you hit a limb.. looks like the arrow deflected left.
i saw that too
Came here to say the same
yea definitely hit the branch! tough shooting lanes
Yea as soon as I saw the arrow stick in rather than punch through I knew it was bad
slow down cowboy. i KNOW your a world class bowman, but how could such a small branch being tapped by a VERY powerful arrow, deflect the arrow to the left? IF deflected wouldn't it have gone to the right??
Can’t tell if the accent was a Matthew Mcconaughey impression or Clay is just rubbing off on him that much.
A touch back is a hilarious name for a deer tracking service.
Some guy once just said "Never pass a buck on the first day which you would be grateful to shoot on 5th day" suits him right.
Tough break. The confirmation at the end was awesome to see. Just insane how strong these bucks are.
I've just had the worst few days of hunting foxes I can remember. Scope must have got knock and I missed 4 shots before I realized something was wrong. Then, after sighting the gun in, I missed another 3 shots this evening due to a bit of target panic that must have set in from my failures. I came home and was looking for things to break. This video has made me feel a little better because it shows that despite our best efforts, sometimes we just don't get it right, and it takes a lot of mental fortitude to handle it. Your patience and solid attitude are remarkable. Everyone who hunts could see the pain in your eyes, but you took it on the chin and stayed strong. Still can't believe that shot didn't kill him though, crazy tough.
Didn't expect a guest appearance from Michael Waddell's accent around 14 minute mark. 😅
I had a similar thing happen this same hutning season, also in WI. Hit a quatering toward me shot and hit shoulder and fortunately one lung. Searched all day, backed out at night, found the buck dead the next morning. Based on the blood trail, he moved quite a bit while expiring. So glad i recovered him, my biggest buck ever, 11pt.
Aside from the unfortunate ending, this is probably my favorite Janis on the hunt episode. Need more whitetail content from Janis.
Definitely hit a limb brother. I watched it on slow mo, absolutely deflected. Still hit em pretty good it seemed
Enjoyed it. Crazy how that's not a fatal shot ultimately and the deer showed all winter.
That is incredible, the arrow nearly went to the vanes and the buck made a full recovery!
Another great episode by the Eagle
100% hit a limb clearly on the slow replay. Can’t believe that Buck survived though wow! These critters are tough. Great job on the video
Spoiler alert
Thanks for letting me see this comment when I start the video...thanks for ruining it.
Don't look at the comments before watching then...
Dag nab spoiler right at the top of the comments 😢
Sucks about the no recovery but happy to see the buck made it through. I myself shot a buck last night, first deer on public land, and it wasn’t great. He got alerted to my presence as I drew. As I took the shot, he took a step towards me completely changing the angle of my arrows entrance. From broadside to quartering to. Lost blood this morning and brought a dog in, to no avail. It sucks. I hate it. I know it happens but it changes nothing on how I feel. Here’s to making the next one count!
My dad owns Tickle’s older brother! We’ve been blood tracking for 10 years with a bunch of different dogs. Hanoverian hounds are the best. Nice to see this in the video!
Dude you hit the branch first it through the arrow off you can see. It lived. No sweat
Great video, best part was the day 6 Clay Newcomb accent while rambling lol
Yani, i had full confidence in your plan B heavy arrow build. if it had not been deflected i think you were good to go. Glad the Buck survived for round 2, maybe you see him this season.
Janis i had a similar situation occur to me last archery season. I had a big tall 6 point come in and he spotted me immediately. How? I have no idea. But he wasnt sure i was a human so he kept coming. I got up and got into ready position. He spottedme again and stopped around 30 yards. I pulled back, he was crossing the T to me. I aimed right behind his shoulder and let her go. He ducked backwards and down. The artow hit in a similar spot to yours. However there was waay more blood when my father and i started trailing him. We thought for sure "hes dead around here somewhere" nope he jumped up and ran away 30 minutesinto the trailing. I was MEGA worried. After a downpour and quick encounter with him again we pulled out. We got back to the house and watched him flop around a lil bit in the field he ran towards for 3 hours. He went back into the woods and after a lil more time we made a plan and went bsck in to get him. My father covered the gulley, my other friend covered the flat part of the woods and pushed in to where i last saw him. Again, more blood! I thought "hes gotta be dead around here somewhere" NOPE he ran a big loop around us all, into the field. After getting up and laying down 4 time's, and at one point laying in the road! He ran into the next field about halfway in, then laid down. After meeting up we made another plan. I got into a stand behind him on the edge of the field and father and friend sat against the truck and just starred him down. He tried to get up 2 or 3 times but looked like he had NO energy left. So i decied to sneak up on him one last time. On my hands and knees i crawled to him. After seeing him FINALLY flop from exhaustion i got up, got behind him and put 1 arrow straight thru his lungs. He ran 40 final yards b4 crashing into the ground. He died 2 minutes later. I collasped to the ground, tired, tired, elated... but mostly still tired. Deer are indeed some tough SOB's. I believe luck and our consyabt pressure on that deer, not giving up helped us win the day and bag him. Its a hunt and a lesson I'll never forget. He rests mounted on my wall. Everytime i look at him i go "pheww!"
Glad to see yours made a full recovery. Happy hunting!
Why does Janis sound like an actor portraying a midwestern hunter during the first half of the video on his close up shots? Like he spent a few days with Clay and Brent beforehand and adopted an accent for the stand.
Thanks for sharing when things don’t go as planned! I’ve been bow hunting for 3 years now and had almost the exact thing happen to me! I feel better knowing it happens to one of the best hunters out there as well. SUCKS! 3 weeks later I shot my first elk!
Hopefully you find yourself back in the saddle this fall in WI. I live out west and returning home to bow hunt my property in west central WI for first time in 3 years. Hunting around Halloween is the best time in my opinion. Good luck!
Every person is different, but I can't imagine going hunting by myself instead of spending Halloween with my kids. Its one of the most fun kid holidays when they are young. BTW I know he is working... for his kids.. I guess I'm speaking more generally... idk just when he said that it really stuck out. I'm from Wisconsin, and I get sooo pumped when this channel releases WI based videos! I now live in the West, which is more pretty to be honest with ya, but WI is more of a hidden gem (for most of the year) than most people know. Same goes for Michigan, some parts of MN and Pennsylvania. Illinois, Indiana, Ohio are 95% trash lands.
I spend hours every day with my kid and he usually hunts with me. Haloween is a "holiday" propogated by the sugar industry to hook your kids on their drug. Who cares about some trashy candy holiday...
Janis is the best, hopefully we get more November hunts in the treestand from you!
Glad to know I'm not the only one who starts to crack in a deer stand.
Always LOVE the Janis hunting vids…some of my very fave content here! Cheers! ❤👏🍻
Was literally just on a hike with a friend of mine and she wants to try out bow hunting... and literally chatted about "what if I hit it but technically miss?" The timing on this is spoooooky
i love how he says his wife is going to be mad cause he aint clean the toilet lmao
I love how the top comment always gives away the ending.
Maybe watch the show like an adult before you scroll?
My goodness Janis. You have just NOT timed it well weather wise! Sorry man. Don't apologize for passing bucks. You're on your own property -- do what you want, shoot what you want, and as you said, which was spot on, shoot something that makes YOU excited
Awesome
Getting a little stir crazy. Haha. Ol' Eagle is getting southern. Soon, he'll be saying "A-kerns".
I wait all year for this video!! I did the same thing last year on a nice buck he also turned up on trail camera after a week. Keep hunting and keep the deer videos coming. Good job Janis.
shoulda harvested those oyster mushrooms on the tree at 4:47. coulda had something good to eat from the hunt.
😂 I saw em too. Came here to say basically the same thing. You got it bad like i do. Good job! 👁
You hit a branch and your arrow turned
probably slowed it down enough to not be fatal too
Yup hit a branch, sorry you didn’t recover it, hell of a effort though!!!
your a GOOD man Janis. I am NOT a hunter, but like YOU i love animals, so i know that pained you.
God Bless You.
This year was only my second season archery hunting and hunting in general. This season was way better than last! I tagged out a mule deer buck and 1 whitetail doe so far. Still have another whitetail and cow/calf elk tag to fill! I'm definitely hooked after this season!
Well Janis after taking giant heaping doses of the fairy dust and shooting my last two bucks a little too far forward from now on my shots are going to be back towards the crease and I’m gonna take a little bit more time in assessing where that arrows gonna come out. Goodluck with the rest of your season! I feel your pain brother
It be what it be.
Every time I've had a blood trail that was consistently one side and become both sides it's been a double back.
Tough break at least he’s still alive. You can get them next year.
Great film. Thanks for taking the time to take us with you.
The limb redirected the arrow down and forward otherwise would have been a kill shot
Happens to everyone eventually!
Any chance someone can share what gear he's using in the tree? I'm looking to get a decent saddle setup. Hard to find a starting point, would rather avoid buying and sending back junk products. Thanks in advance!
Lol ! The comments are coming back again.
What camera is Janis using looks like a nice slim set up?
Thank you Janis, this was a good watch!
Janis turns into Jim Varney @ 14:00. Love it
You the man Janis, keep that head up high sir
Wisconsin is beautiful in the fall!
It looks like you were hunting my neck of the woods in SW, WI. The shot was forward in front of the front shoulder bone and went into the neck muscle. I'm not a big fan of shooting quartering to deer with a bow. Been there done that. Definitely does not feel good, but it is inevitable with archery equipment. What appeared to be a bigger buck that walked under your stand gave you a lot of opportunity to take a quality shot.
Quartering to is a fine shot. Same geometry as quartering away. Neither shot will work if you hit a limb and miss by a foot.
Can't wait to get in the stand!!!!
16:00 was a deffo play on clay 😂
That really sucks brother, it actually sounded like it hit bone, tough break and shit happens
It's ok to hit bone, but not if you only hit neck meat first...
Let's go, Janis! 🏹
We shall await the sequel.
100% hit the branch
Love the Stormy Kromer.
There's ol Janis....
love your vids
Great content man.
Damn limb deflected your arrow!
650 grain arrow might be a good plan B
Wow thought that was a dead deer! Especially the way his tail was wagging. Usually that’s their death sign.
People think that, but it's a complete misconception. They do it all day every day.
@@BG-bx4ey yeah mmmkkk
🇧🇷👍
What happened to the arrow?
Try drone deer recovery.
Dogs are FAR more capable than drones.
What hat are you wearing Janis?
Man that Janis looses a lot of animals…pretty sad when you’re the face of a major hunting brand…maybe he needs to put more work in behind the camera
Wait its october 28th? So ya sat on this video for a fuckin year? Yeah right bros.. no way this is a good video…
Bummer. Killed one and didnt get it. I guess it comes with the territory. I see why ya didn’t publish the vid
That’s a Donald Trump buck. Just turned and grazed him
Too much talking and moving. Whisper, sit still eagle man
Such a random hunter. Seems out of place
How can you analyze the shot and footage repeatedly and NOT MENTION the OBVIOUS DEFLECTION from hitting a limb!? WTF!? It happens. It’s bow hunting. That last buck you saw was a nice one!
