I own the new 23mm 1.4, cos it's the focal length I prefer. Yes it's pricey, but on the other hand there's nothing to worry about. Lens works exactly as expected- And that's true for all apertures and distances. While the Fujicron lacks sharpness in lower distances on F 2. Once I bought the F 1.4, I forgot about the money I spent. I'm just happy with it, it glues on my X-Pro 3.
I have the 18mm and the 33mm. They are just perfect, as you say. Excellent IQ, AF… everything. But many times I end up taking the 35mm f2, or the 27mm f2.8 because I choose APSC because of the size. For casual/amateur/travel/family shooter… I would go for the ‘fujicrons’ and I would invest in Topaz photo for noise reduction if needed :) (to compensate that 1.4 to f2 difference).
I have always been a 3-lens person. In my film only days, on my SLRs I shot: 24mm f/2 35mm f/1.4 85mm f/1.4 On my 35mm rangefinders I shot: 21mm f/1.4 35mm f/1.4 90mm f/2 In this digital age, I shoot the following on my Fuji X-Pro2 mirrorless: 16mm f/1.4 23mm f/1.4 56mm f/1.2 The 23mm f/1.4 is a great lens.
Well we both seem to prefer 28mm to 35 (FF) and love the 50mm too. The Fuji equivalents (18mm f1.4 and 33 1.4) are stunning. I'd recomment getting the 18 1,4 (what a lens) then get the 33 later.
New Viltrox 23mm 1.4, the Mark II version, is a serious contender to this though. Less than half the price, smaller, very good performance, excellent build quality, has an aperture ring, it weighs only 260g. For me it was no brainer to work as the main and versatile 35mm equivalent on my Fuji, especially after having the 13mm and 75mm Viltrox, which are unbelievable lenses in every way.
Have the 18 1.4 and the 33 1.4. I love them both. A Viltrox 75 1.2 completes my entire lens kit. However, I use the 18 and 33 90% of the time. All three are exceptional and truly professional grade!
I do have both new 23/1.4, and 33/1.4 (im using X-S10) I love using 35mm on FF, its my fav focal lenght - so I bought new 23/1.4 and Im not sure if Im happy. I mean this lens is so perfect in every aspect, that it is simply just boring. Rendering is very clinical and "lifeless" (?) Images are always sharp and crisp in every aperture, zero abberations or any optical flaws. Bokeh is creamy. Its like using any modern 35/2 prime (in FF terms), nothing rally to write home about. Because of that Im starting considering to sell it and get new Sigma 18-50/2.8 for travels and more versitality. For everyday use, or to document my family life I've got cheap as hell TTArtisan 25/2, which has tons of flaws but also tons of character in rendering. Images taken by this ultra cheap chinese manual lens are always soo pleasant for my eyes.. There is also Voigtländer Nokton 23/1.2 for Fuji X, which renders even more interesting, organic and with great 3D pop XF 33/1.4 on the other hand is just stellar for portraits. I dont know what is going on, but portraits taken from XF 33/1.4 are most of the time just stunning - even if lens is also perfectly corrected and renders in modern way. Maybe it is because of combination of focal lenght/aperture? Dunno. But 33/1.4 is rally hard to get rid once You see results ;)
The 33 was designed to have some of the same character as the classic 35 1.4 but with fewer optical flaws. Of the new primes, it’s probably the least clinical, still has some CA, and can flare under the right scenarios, but it’s just magical. Every portrait I’ve taken with it just takes my breath away.
Oh how I hope they update the 18mm f2, improve the optics, make it weather sealed and add the linear motor🤞id buy it in a heartbeat. That 33mm 1.4 is super tempting however and I'll patiently wait for it to start appearing on the used market in a couple years time.
My 23mm fujicron is my favorite lens for my fuji cameras. I think only if you absolutely need F1.4 is the new one better otherwise I would grab ,just because of the size, to the fujicron. top video as always.👌
Picked up the 23mm F1.4 WR two days ago. Have had the Fuji 23mm F2.0 and VIltrox F1.4 and kept the Viltrox and sold the F2.0. The Viltrox will stay as my backup lens, but it's not in the same class as the Fuji. I can't quite believe how much better it seems to perform than either of my previous 23mm AF lenses, in fact. I have a huge lens collection, mind you, including a lot of manual glass... and it's the 23mm that always ends up on the front of my camera. If I had to narrow things down to a single kit, it would be the 10-24, 16-80, 70-300, the 23 mm F1.4 and a Meike 6.5mm fisheye. But I won't. Because it would make me cry, lol.
I couldn't afford the F1.4 so I got the F2 which is still a really great lens as well. Thanks for the review of this lens it's really good and I definitely think that 35mm equivalent is a must have in your kit. It is pretty much my street walkabout walk to a spot lens I can photograph pretty much anything with it except for birds obviously but it's a really great lens. Thank you for the video once again. I went for the 1.4 in the 35mm instead. Maybe I should've gone the other way. I don't know I was fairly new to Fujifilm and still am to a degree and my budget said F2 for the 23.
I came Sony full-frame and my go to was the Sigma 35mm f1.4. That beast was the size of a full-frame zoom lens and weighed like one at 640g. It makes the 23mm f1.4 at 375g not too bad of a compromise. 😅 Fantastic and insightful video mate!
I was a Canon user and I invested on the Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art as well. I ended up selling all my lenses and only keeping that lens alone for my Canon body. That lens in phenomenal. 35mm (FF equivalent) is my main and IMO the best all rounder focal length
I just bought the 18/1.4 a month ago, and the 33/1.4 last week. Haven't used them as I just got back from an overseas trip. Just playing with them at the house, I know that I made the right decision. The test shots that I am getting from both lenses are sharp and have very good colors in them.
I do have the 23 mm but it's the F2 I didn't feel the F1 .4 was gonna do me a major benefit as well. I was also a budget as well but I agree that having that lens is so useful when I'm out and about I just have to have that lens on my camera.
Since selling my sumilix and making a profit I been looking for another 50mm to pair up with the Leica q. Just preordered the new Sigma 50mm f2. This is a great video thank you for sharing
I've switched my old and trusty 35mm f1.4 for the 33mm f1.4 and I a don't have any regret. The difference in sharpness is very noticeable and the AF is giving me the confidence in nailing most shots with my kids. The 35mm f1.4 was awesome and the shots were almost always keepers if you nail the focus. However, I had to throw many shots away because de AF missed. The 33mm hits 100% more keepers for me. And damn, the are sharp as hell.
Nice video! I'm thinking of getting either this or the new fuji 18mm 1.4 lens. Mainly doing videography work, events weddings etc. Which would you suggest since you've tried both?
Crazy good lens. For my Fuji kit, I just have this lens and the 16-80 for bright outdoor hikes and that sort of thing, where a different perspective gives you different results. I really wouldn't change anything about either.
How does the zoom quality compare to the 23mm? I have the XT5 and 23mm and it’s a brilliant set up but seeking a zoom for travel versatility. The 16-55mm is way too big!
@@kalvino67 I use the zoom for travel and love it. The new 23 is admittedly on another level, but the zoom gives you lots of compositions, no lens changing to slow you down, weather sealing, feels nice in the hand, isn't too big or heavy, weather sealing, etc.. the new 23 is next level sharp, but both are great IMO. I tend to use the 23 when I know I'll be in mixed lighting and the 16-80 when I'm exclusively outdoors (F4). The 23 makes you work for the shot (I think in a good way) by moving around and the zoom is quick
@@kalvino67 Sorry to but in. A great alternative to the 16-55 is the Tamron 17-70 f2.8. It is stabilised and weighs less than the Fuji. They render images a little differently, that is subjective, however and the optical quality is on par and the Tamron is virtually free of CA. Tough choice picking between the two. Second time around I went Tamron and no regrets.
Love your content! I only have the 15-45mm, and I’m looking to add a prime lense. Should I go with 23mm F2 or 27mm pancake?! I only use camera for leisure and travel. Thanks!
All three new Fujifilm lenses are great (18mm, 23 and 33mm) but the 23mm f1.4 is the best of the bunch. The 18 is a tad sharper still in the center but the 23 is much sharper across the frame. Corner to corner sharpness straight from maximum aperture. And both are better than the 33. Check out the lenstip reviews on each of them, specifically the resolution scores. I take my X100V when I want to go light and my X-T3 + xf 23mm f1.4 R LM WR otherwise.
I only have te 33 1.4 but i can’t see differences between 33-23 and 18 for iq, and don’t just pixel peep for sharpness, all 3 looks amazing to me. The 33mm 1.4 is the best standard prime i’ve ever had
I use the 23 56 Combo...sometimes I wish for the 16 1.4...but I had it and it is great but used it rarely. 23LM does have character and it has one big flaw which u will only see in RAW and that is vignetting....pretty bad at 1.4 but otherwise indeed perfect....
I had the 18mm 1.4 and used it in Europe on my XPro-3 but disliked the weight and larger form factor. I went back to my 35mm f2 and 23mm f2. I wish Fuji could figure out how to make fast but smaller primes. I’m eyeing the Leica Q2 as a one lens full-frame solution.
Super helpful video as always. How do you feel about the Fujifilm 23 F1.4 WR vs the Fujifilm 18 F1.4 WR in terms of AF & IQ performance? I've heard other reviewers state that the 23 is sharper than the 33. Curious if you agree and how you feel these three stack up against each other. Thanks!
Fuji is mindblowing with his f/1.4 series, i only have the 33mm 1.4 and i love it. 23mm looks as great to me, i just don’t like 23 on apsc enough to buy a prime, i’ll cover that focal with a 10-24 or with the 16-55 2.8 mkII to be released
Totaly agreing with you. Would love a more "arty with autofocus" series for Fuji. Thinks voigtlander M character with autofocus, flaring, distortion in bokeh, more some vignetting. The more the years pass, the more all AF lenses looks a like, and that's a shame.
18 and 33 are the best of those 3 new lenses... That's exactly why I ended up with those two instead of many of the other things... I am thinking I just need a macro (maybe the 60 mm) and then a 17-70 or 18-50 zoom for vacation use :)
Hi Goughie. I've got a topic for you ND filters. Traditionally, they have been used to make beautiful effects on moving water and to obtain boekh effects on a bright day. But, I think they are perhaps more useful to simply tone down the sun on a bright day say shooting at noon or a beach. Today's ND filters can carry as much as 10 stops on one adaptable filter.
I use an ND for video and that’s about it tbh, as with video you have a reason to maintain a slower shutter speed. in terms of toning down a bright day I guess it only makes sense if you also need to lower your shutter speed for some reason, Otherwise you may as well just increase your shutter as it’ll have the same effect, maybe if you had a reason to avoid electronic shutter that would make sense too! Or shooting wide open a camera that lacks an electronic shutter! Or film etc!
Had the mark one of this lens, great performer. I just found it a bit unbalanced on the X-Pro1. Weather sealing, or lack thereof has never really bothered me. Good review on the new mate.
Credible, fair, and fast paced review, Goughie. Well done. Have you used manual focus methods other than peaking - like split-image range-finder and pentaprism in Fuji cams? Regarding lens resolving power to match sensor, I wonder how adapted vintage lenses that were made for film would perform on current Fuji high mp cams. Might make for a good future video. Cheers!
I’ve tried them! I actually found for me the best one was the split screen one, where one side shows the full image and the other just the focus area! I’ve done a couple videos where I convert voigtlander and Leica lenses! But nothing that’s true vintage
I like the idea of "One lens philosophy", and I'm partially in it. I'm not sure about others, but I currently have 4 lenses(yeah I know), which is all I need. I own a 23 f2 prime lens. This is my primary lens for most situations, is an everyday use lens, ie "go around the city" lens. Equal to around 35mm on a full frame, perfect for taking dose city shots, and sometimes also for travel If I'm lazy to change the lens. Basically, the 23 f2 is my camera body cap. I'm still waiting for Fuji or another company to release an updated version of 23/35f2 or 27 f2.8. I love these f2/2.8 Primes from Fuji. The lens is not bulky compared to the new ones like 33f1.4 and focuses faster than the 35f1.4 (an old lens) but is more of a "vintage" stealthy lens, and the look of this lens won't raise much attention on the street. I‘d like to see if there is an updated version of 23\35 f1.4 that has a similar size and look like the old version. But seems Fuji decided to upgrade these f1.4 lines to a more bulky "pro" style lens. I also have a Samyang 12mm prime lens, which is mainly for my astrophotography when I want to take Milkyways photos or Meteor Showers if I have a chance to. Is not much to talk about since I won't use this 12mm lens much but is a cheap lens, and I bought it dedicated to one purpose, so is fine to put it at the bottom of my gear bag. I also own two zooms. 16-80 come with my new XT5 and it is very good for a travel/hiking lens because it is balanced between the weight and the zoom reach. The 16-55 F2.8 (655g) is heavier than 16-80 f4(440g), and 16-80 has more reach than the 18-55 f2.8-4. So not unlike some others that sell this lens right away, I keep this 16-80 in my gear bag. Sometimes I'll also carry a 70-300 so I can shoot some zoom landscape or wildlife. This is also a balanced lens that has more reach(and is lighter) compared to 50-200. And the 70-300 has the WR compared to the 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8, which does not have weather resistance. I won't consider changing 70-300 to a faster lens unless I have a solid reason to take these zoom photos in low-light conditions.
I love my 70-300 it’s such a great lens for the size! My 16-55mm f2.8 Fuji is my main travel video lens, and I really struggle with the size and weight of it, really considering the 18-50mm sigma! Way smaller! But does miss out on weather sealing! I do like them f2 primes! other than the 18mm which is a little questionable! But I’m not sure what I’d want in an update to them lenses!
@@Goughie Sigma is an excellent choice; it is almost my "kit" lens when I choose which XT5 I will buy. But I'm also questioning the lack of weather sealing ( even though I had a non-WR Sigma16mm f1.4 with Sony a7000. I used it in the rain and had zero problems), so in the end, I go with the 16-80kit version. It has been a hard choice for Fuji users recently; they released some great lenses, but for no reason, they are still not the ones I want to upgrade/change for. I stuck with the 23f2 when I bought the XT30 a few years ago and have not changed it since🤣 I love to see if 27 2.8 will have an upgrade version; If it is out I might even trade my 23 in for the 27🤤the size and the focal length are soo attractive( pancake size with a 40mm equivalent lens).
You could sell the 16-55 and the 16-80 and get the Tamron 17-70 f2.8. Cracking lens. Virtually free of CA, lighter than the 16-55 and has stabilisation. Plus image quality is better than the 16-80. By a long way faster.
I own the 18mm f/1.4! I never really liked my copy of the 23mm f/2 because it was not great wide-open and I struggled to get out-of-focus backgrounds. The 18mm f/1.4 solves all these issues and the wider field of view + low distortion come in handy and the optical quality allows me to crop into the image to recreate that 23mm look!😊
I first reviewed the 18mm f1.4 about a year ago! And I misunderstood it! I couldn’t look past the size and see what it was capable of! I think now I’ve gravitated to the larger cameras, I can see the benefits of it! And it was one awesome lens
I first reviewed the 18mm f1.4 about a year ago! And I misunderstood it! I couldn’t look past the size and see what it was capable of! I think now I’ve gravitated to the larger cameras, I can see the benefits of it! And it was one awesome lens
The 23MM 1.4 is the only lens I don’t have. I have the 18 and 33 1.4 and the 27mm 2.8 pancake. A wonderful alternative to the Fuji is the Voigtlander 23MM 1.2 X mount. I have this lens and love it.
Still convincing yourself to keep the Samyang hey? Depends on how wide you need it. The Samyang is wider but slower and manual focus only. Stick to your budget.
This isn’t an Astro channel! So take what I say with some caution, 12mm helps with avoiding star trails so you can have longer exposure times, but it’s slower so it kinda counters that, with Astro you don’t really need AF, so the Samyang is fine there Surely the bigger question ends up becoming do you want 12mm or 23mm images, the difference is huge! Surely the 18mm is a better consideration so you can keep some width?
Attention to salt water on gear. Weather sealed is not salt proof. Salt crystals even when water dries off just emerge into the tinny espaces and damage gear. That’s why tech gear needs particular attention when someone lives by the sea shore. I’m sure you know that but I would not put weather seal on test just cleaning the water from my gear.
It’s funny, because 23 is the only one of the basic prime focal lengths I don’t have. I have the 18, 33, 56, and 90. I do have the X100V, but usually have the WCL on it. 23 is such a weird focal length for me. It’s not quite wide enough when I need it, and it’s not quite telephoto enough. I’ll probably end up getting a 23 at some point just to fill the gap, but I have a hard time using it.
Thanks for this video. It is (at least for me) a fantastic lens, my only fast prime. I had the f2 „fujicron“ and did not like it, especially close and wide open this one is not convincing. The new LM WR is just awesome, youncan get superclose, it is supersharp and you get nice bokeh. You are right, the lens hood is pretty long and bulky.. I got a great deal with 50% off the alternative, way smaller, square metal hood, looks great.
I have the 23mm F1.4 and am really please with the results, but because I like smaller bodies and lenses, the new 23mm WR LM isn't for me. That being said Please ask Fuji to update their 23mmF2 to the newer X100V lens formula, or the 18mmF2 to WR LM and make them under 150g, I mean it's definitely possible since Canon has one that's 100g, and Leica has one that's also around 150g. Heck Fuji has one tucked in the X100V and VI! These would be awesome lenses. I mean I love my X100V but it's really inconvenient to carry 2 bodies around travelling! It's really annoying to know that the X100V lens is so much better than the current 23mmF2 because of the close focusing problem. And it IS a problem not a feature, because I have owned the X100T/F/V and know the difference is dramatic! Please Fuji!
Thx, but the Fujicrons are just nifty little lenses.. nothing to compete. But these latest are next gen. lenses.. definitely worth the extra £££ I'm completing my trio with the XF18LM this week. And that 23LM and its in/out of focus capability.. wow!
Nice video. I personally use the voigtlander 35 1.2 since I am more a 50(on FF) person. But I have tried all these new lenses from Fuji and I can really say that they have filled the gap with Sony.
Love your content as always, Goughie. It's a funny thing with the 23mm; it's probably the most versatile focal length there is, but when I look back at my own images shot at or around 23mm, I often think that I should have taken the shot wider (18mm) of tighter (35mm). Or, put in another way: they are often a bit dull :). Of course, no single focal length always works and no single focal length never works, but now that I'm eyeballing these mark 2 versions of the Fuji primes, I don't think I will replace my 23mm 1.4 mark 1, but just sell it off. I usually enjoy the 18mm images more, so that's probably where i'm heading. Then again, I'm also considering going full frame (Nikon Zf), so, decisions, decisions....
If you enjoy the 18mm more....then try the Viltrox 13mm.......that lens always knocks my socks off!!!! But you're right on the money though. I do believe the reason you think the 23mm maybe more boring than the 18mm, is because you get "more in the shot" with your 18mm..........even though it's not really that huge of a change in focal distance.....the perspective matters alot. Happy Shooting!!!
It comes down to what are you shooting. Not ideal for street photography, i find it too bulky to carry around all day and also attracts more eyes, the f2 version is far superior in that regard. But for everything else the 1.4 gets you the better image quality
You are right : as big and as expensive than à full frame lens so better buy a full frame. It is also right to say that what is described as "caracter " is actually an optimal default and what is "clinical" is just sharpness. It is easier to make à soft picture with a "clinical" lens than à sharp (when needed) picture with a "caracter" lens.
Well from an XH2S point of view I’m not sure I’d swap it for any full frame camera tbh! I guess the point is you have the small options still, but when you need it performance it’s now an option!
People thinking this is big and heavy... Me, remembering his Sigma 35mm F1.2 for Sony FF... 1090g of fantastic image quality. Not much heavier than my most used lens, 135mm F1.8 GM which is a 950g lens.
I think it’s more that many people chose an APSC camera in the first place to reduce the size of their kit the old lenses are all generally pretty small! So these newer lenses although really good optically Go against the main reason people chose APSC. Personally I love that we now have the option for optically great lenses
@@Goughie I decided to get Fuji because of a cheap stacked sensor in H2s. The camera itself isn't much smaller than my A7r IV which I will be selling since I don't need FF, but these lenses are super tiny and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I like lenses with heft.
I use Sony, but if I was to have a set of Fuji, then it would be two X-H2, 14mm 2.8 R, 23mm 1.4 R LM WR, 56mm 1.2 R WR (why does it not have LM in the name ?), and 90mm 2.0 R LM WR, unfortunately Fuji does not have very good macro and long prime tele Lenses (except the 200mm 2.0), so Fuji are a no go for me. Anyone who have experience with the 40 megapixels X-T5 of X-H2 for macro photography ?
I did macro with the XT5! But used the new 30mm macro which was a little quirky! Lots of people using the 80mm in the forums on Facebook with great results
@@Goughie 30mm are too short for me and from reviews and tests there are no macro Lenses for Fuji that are good enough for me, I like sharp pixels piping images
You cannot compare the F1.4 lenses with the F2 ones. The new F1.4 make much better use of the 40 MP sensor of the new cameras than the F2 lenses. Only the 50 mm F2 is as sharp as the 23 mm F1.4.
All the new fuji lenses are garbage. The entire reason I bought into the system was for it to be nice and compact like a Leica..I was hoping for a revamped 18mm pancake and a new 23 f2 or faster compact prime. The older 35 1.4 was a great size. Why did they bother to make the lenses as big as Nikons or Canons? they shoudve stayed true to their reasoning behind the system. if they wanted dedicated lenses that could be used for video also they should've made a dedicated line separately. That's why I'm selling my fuji kit and using my Nikon Z6 with Leica M lenses...theres just no difference now in terms of size. and plus I get full frame quality and much better lens options.
The 23mm 1.4 WR is legit. It's possibly the one lens I'd keep out of all my lenses for versatility, speed, and quality. Great video man!
Such a solid lens!
I use this lens on a xt30ii and the balance is perfect. Image quality is superb!
Makes a lot of sense to me!
I love my two lens combo for my X-Pro-3, the 23mm F1.4 WR and the 56mm F1.2 WR
I have always been a 3-lens person.
In my film only days, on my SLRs I shot:
24mm f/2
35mm f/1.4
85mm f/1.4
On my 35mm rangefinders I shot:
21mm f/1.4
35mm f/1.4
90mm f/2
In this digital age, I shoot the following on my Fuji X-Pro2 mirrorless:
16mm f/1.4
23mm f/1.4
56mm f/1.2
The 23mm f/1.4 is a great lens.
Huge fan of the 33mm 1.4. Fuji's primes are killer lately.
So am I! That’s the one of the three that’s really stood out for me!
I got the Valtrox 23mm f/1.4. It's coming in Thursday. Used $230USD. I'll let you know how it goes.
Well we both seem to prefer 28mm to 35 (FF) and love the 50mm too. The Fuji equivalents (18mm f1.4 and 33 1.4) are stunning. I'd recomment getting the 18 1,4 (what a lens) then get the 33 later.
This is the sharpest lens in my bag for the fuji system. Corners very impressive already from f1.4.
I like that lens I might get that one instead I was hoping they will come out with a pro series
Have the 18 1.4 and the 33 1.4. I love them both. A Viltrox 75 1.2 completes my entire lens kit. However, I use the 18 and 33 90% of the time. All three are exceptional and truly professional grade!
Does viltrox compete with fuji in image quality and sharpness?
I do have both new 23/1.4, and 33/1.4 (im using X-S10)
I love using 35mm on FF, its my fav focal lenght - so I bought new 23/1.4 and Im not sure if Im happy.
There is also Voigtländer Nokton 23/1.2 for Fuji X, which renders even more interesting, organic and with great 3D pop
XF 33/1.4 on the other hand is just stellar for portraits.
Of the 3 the 33mm is the stand out for me too! I’m also considering that sigma as a replacement for my big and heavy 16-55mm Fuji
Best lens i have ever bought for my X-PRO3!
K, so I'm getting an X-T5 and the 23mm. Got it.
Oh how I hope they update the 18mm f2, improve the optics, make it weather sealed and add the linear motor🤞id buy it in a heartbeat. That 33mm 1.4 is super tempting however and I'll patiently wait for it to start appearing on the used market in a couple years time.
I have the 23mm f:2 and for the size and AF speed is one of my favs.
My 23mm fujicron is my favorite lens for my fuji cameras. I think only if you absolutely need F1.4 is the new one better otherwise I would grab ,just because of the size, to the fujicron. top video as always.👌
Yes, my answer would be yes. We all need the best lenses to get the most out of our cameras. They do make a huge difference.
I’m a kindred spirit. I’d cry if I had to give up some of my older Fuji lenses that have made such beautiful photos!
Fantastic and insightful video mate!
Them sigma art lenses are huge 😂
I was a Canon user and I invested on the Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art as well. I ended up selling all my lenses and only keeping that lens alone for my Canon body. That lens in phenomenal. 35mm (FF equivalent) is my main and IMO the best all rounder focal length
I just bought the 18/1.4 a month ago, and the 33/1.4 last week. Haven't used them as I just got back from an overseas trip. Just playing with them at the house, I know that I made the right decision. The test shots that I am getting from both lenses are sharp and have very good colors in them.
Great choice!
Which one prefer for family travel? 33 or 18
I do have the 23 mm but it's the F2 I didn't feel the F1 .4 was gonna do me a major benefit as well.
I really enjoyed my time with the 33mm f1.4, of the 3 that’s the stand out lens for me!
Been enjoying your 35mm 1.4 ever since;) Great lens but it indeed does miss focus occasionally
That’s a great set up!
@@MichaelMoore-bx6st Awesome feedback! Much appreciated!
Two great combos!!
so what's the latest firmware for this lens, just got the lens but can't find any info if my 1.0 is indeed the most recent one
Good video, Goughie. I love the colours on the 3rd still photo at 0.16. What film sim are you using for that?
All photos were edited using my presets, the little codes in the bottom describe was stack I used
I'm loving mine. Great video as always G.!!!
The laws of physics are working against you. ☹
I had the 18 1.4 and it’s sooooo good. Is this the same quality?
In a few weeks I’ll share my set up! Once I’ve got all my lenses! This comments given me a smile!
@@Goughie is this a ‘great minds think alike’ moment that’s gonna happen in a few weeks!? :D
Just got this.. AMAZING.. I tried to get something cheaper, but after the first test shot I was sold
I use an ND for video and that’s about it tbh, as with video you have a reason to maintain a slower shutter speed.
in terms of toning down a bright day I guess it only makes sense if you also need to lower your shutter speed for some reason,
Otherwise you may as well just increase your shutter as it’ll have the same effect, maybe if you had a reason to avoid electronic shutter that would make sense too! Or shooting wide open a camera that lacks an electronic shutter! Or film etc!
You are right, I never thought of it that way. @@Goughie
I stuck with the 23f2 when I bought the XT30 a few years ago and have not changed it since🤣
I love to see if 27 2.8 will have an upgrade version; If it is out I might even trade my 23 in for the 27🤤the size and the focal length are soo attractive( pancake size with a 40mm equivalent lens).
You could sell the 16-55 and the 16-80 and get the Tamron 17-70 f2.8. Cracking lens. Virtually free of CA, lighter than the 16-55 and has stabilisation. Plus image quality is better than the 16-80. By a long way faster.
@@kaneclements7761 I Never thought about Tamron. Sounds like an all-rounder lens, let me do some research about it. Thanks bro!
16 2.8 and 50 2.0 for me, one wide, one tight. Maybe add the 90 in the future.
Thanks for the review. And no, I don't need it at all, but I want it at all 😂
It would be boring if we only bought what we needed 😂

The 23MM 1.4 is the only lens I don’t have. I have the 18 and 33 1.4 and the 27mm 2.8 pancake. A wonderful alternative to the Fuji is the Voigtlander 23MM 1.2 X mount. I have this lens and love it.
What would be better for astrophotography, 12mm samyang, or this?
Still convincing yourself to keep the Samyang hey? Depends on how wide you need it. The Samyang is wider but slower and manual focus only. Stick to your budget.
This isn’t an Astro channel! So take what I say with some caution, 12mm helps with avoiding star trails so you can have longer exposure times, but it’s slower so it kinda counters that,
with Astro you don’t really need AF, so the Samyang is fine there
Surely the bigger question ends up becoming do you want 12mm or 23mm images, the difference is huge! Surely the 18mm is a better consideration so you can keep some width?
Viltrox 13mm 1.4
Attention to salt water on gear. Weather sealed is not salt proof. Salt crystals even when water dries off just emerge into the tinny espaces and damage gear. That’s why tech gear needs particular attention when someone lives by the sea shore. I’m sure you know that but I would not put weather seal on test just cleaning the water from my gear.
thx for the tip 👊
I got two camera two lens philosophy. 16-55 Fuji on one and the 75mm Viltrox on the other one.
Love these fast primes, but i cannot seem to take of my 150-600. Im obsessed with it.
I’m with you. I’d rather shoot at 16 or 18, and 33 or 56 than 23. The 23 is popular, but just doesn’t work for everyone.
how do you feel the xf23mm f1.4R compared to the Fuji xf23mm f2?
Yeah the 23 is hard to beat. It can do anything. For the family photographer the f2 didn't cut it close focusing wide open. It was truly horrible
Of all the fujicrons, the 23 has the most iffy image quality. If you don’t own the 40 MP sensor, the fujicrons are plenty good.
How does thay lens balance on your xt5? Seems like itnwould be unbalanced. Im curious to hear your thoughts!
probably depends what you're used too! I think its okay, it's a little unbalanced though! doesn't help that the XT5 grip is so small!
I’ve seen them square metal hoods! Will definitely be considering them!
Thanks for an informative video. Food for thought for sure. I'm still using my 18-55 zoom on the XE-3. But maybe, just maybe...
Would love to see you review the F2 versions :)
I want to try this lens sometime! Great video ❤
Thank you!
It's the one lens that I want! But i keep derailing it by buying other lenses lol..
Haha! I know that feeling!
Thx, but the Fujicrons are just nifty little lenses.. nothing to compete. But these latest are next gen. lenses.. definitely worth the extra £££ I'm completing my trio with the XF18LM this week. And that 23LM and its in/out of focus capability.. wow!
Hello I am newer to photography
Can I suggest which one should I pick first 16mm or 23mm
Focal length will nearly always be a personal preference! If you currently have a zoom have a look and see what focal length you use the most
@@Goughie
I want indoor photography inside room as well as outdoor photography like monuments shooting etc
Nice video. I personally use the voigtlander 35 1.2 since I am more a 50(on FF) person. But I have tried all these new lenses from Fuji and I can really say that they have filled the gap with Sony.
Two lenses for me also, 16/80 and the 70/300, both work very well with the XT5. Maybe one prime for streetish work, 23/f2 will do nicely.
I love my 70-300mm! It’s crazy how large of a focal range you can cover with two reasonable small lenses!
1:05 impressive amount? or disappointing amount?
I get it but for the size of this lens I world rather have the rf35 1.8 on a R5 or R6ii. If huge and perfect just go full frame already.
Xf18mmf2 + XF35mm1.4 = 300grams, small, great rendering, cheap 2nd hand, great for everything accept sports.
Great combo!
People thinking this is big and heavy...
Me, remembering his Sigma 35mm F1.2 for Sony FF... 1090g of fantastic image quality. Not much heavier than my most used lens, 135mm F1.8 GM which is a 950g lens.
I think it’s more that many people chose an APSC camera in the first place to reduce the size of their kit
the old lenses are all generally pretty small! So these newer lenses although really good optically
Go against the main reason people chose APSC.
@@BalkanBiker aha! Just seen your comment on the channel from 5 months ago saying you were thinking about swapping to Fuji!

How can you get all the different jobs done with just a 35ish ? That's not possible
"It would look massive on my xe2, have to keep looking , the 1.4 may be a stop to far!

I am sad to hear it is difficult to do manual focusing, I do manual focus 99.99% of the time.
Maybe change your heading as there are many photographers that will never use a 23mm only lens you will ever need photographers.
1.4 tutta la vita
It''s also called a foot zoom. haha.
Sold mine, it was large, looks bland, and expensive.
It's "home in", not "hone in"!
Thanks for the amazing feedback! Surely they both make sense 🤷🏼♂️
@@Goughie :-) not really. "hone" means to sharpen and takes a direct object (yes, I'm a pedant . . .). And yes, I knew what you meant.
Avoid using this lens for portrait photo, you won't look good at all.
What makes you say that? 35mm is perfectly fine for portraits?
Rather 18mm F1.4 for me.
Oooooo strong choice!
Any news on when the 16-55 mkII will be released?
@@mohamadkhanafer7978 it should come before the end of 2024, official news are expected for the october x-summit
