This was one of the most influential games of all time because afterwards, pass interference began to be enforced to an extra degree by the officials starting in 2004.
Football as we knew it was about to change forever, slowly but surely.

I can’t help but wonder if the AFC CG was Chiefs/Patriots do we still get the pass interference extra enforcement considering KC was less reliant on passing game

But you have to wonder how many touchdowns and yards Peyton Manning and other quarterbacks after him would throw for if the rules stayed the way they were in the early 2000’s.

This is the game that sent Ty Law to the Hall of Fame. Yes he got a pick six in the Super Bowl 2 years prior, but getting 3 interceptions in the AFC championship game and playing in your 3rd Super Bowl gets you noticed by the Hall of Fame voters when you retire. For the Patriots, they won even though it was ugly on offense they still found a way to win.

Honestly, both Brady and Manning didn't play particularly well. New England just had a better defense.

I had totally forgotten that this game was as close as it was! I guess I had lumped it in with the 04 playoff game between these two, and I thought both were more of the blowout variety.

Would the Chiefs have matched up better with the Patriots?
If anything, I can guarantee that Trent Green would NOT have thrown 4 interceptions.
Plus, they were a cold weather outdoor team built around an O-Line and a running back that was more built for these conditions

I sort of think Manning got a bit of a pass for this one if memory serves. The Pats were undefeated at home in the cold in January, had an elite defense, and were on a 13 game winning streak. Manning emerged as a great QB in 03, but he wasn’t truly elite until 04 imo. When he came back to Foxboro again the next January, expectations were a lot higher and the consequences were more severe, even though that Pats team was much better than this Pats team.
