  • Hey peeps! Today's video is going to be on some of the things that only chin owners can relate to. Owning a chinchilla is such a special, and awesome priveledge, but there are some downsides to it that no one really talks about. Hope you enjoyed the video and don't forget to have a great week! :):):)

    I imagine owning a chinchilla is actually a lot like not owning one, except that there's a chinchilla in your house.

    Biggest pro of my chin is she knows the exact sound my ps4 makes when I power it down for the night and she wants to say goodnight. She'll just bust out of her house squeaking and jumping for my to hold her the minute she hears it. Its adorable.

Any other time of the day and he doesn't care too much if you pay attention to him or not. Oh and heaven forbid my little dog gets close to the cage... he LOVES getting kisses from the dog!!! From my experience, owning a chinchilla is like owning a living embodiment of the word yeet.
    They constantly do things are seemingly impossible for a tiny ball of fluff to achieve just because they can.
    They can go from naught to "Oh shit. Where the fuck is he?" In 0.003 seconds.
    Anywhere you try to keep them out of, they become deturmined to get to.
    If you think somewhere or something is safe from a chinchilla, it isn't.
    Don't even think about trying to put up wallpaper in your house.
    Will pull off straight up heists to steal all the treats.
    They just in general just do whatever the fuck they want.
    And they're so adorable, you love them for all of it.

  • @doomship1521
    @doomship1521 4 года назад +64

    I’ve had my little ball-o-fluff for about 7 years now (she’s 10 at the time of typing this). One of the biggest things about chinnies is that they are a commitment. They may be a rodent, but the domesticated species can live for up to 20-22 years. I used to work in a chinchilla rescue when I was in Highschool (16-17 years old) and worked with a total of 36 chinnies on my own, (my fluffball was one of them) working with around 22-25 at a given time. The eldest of the group was an old man that was blind and partially deaf at 18 years old. Chinchillas are a major commitment of both effort for their care and time. That said, they are wonderful creatures with amazing social skills. My fluff nugget will follow me around when I put her in her ball to roam. She constantly tries to bring me her toys when I’m playing with her and will just sit in my lap when she’s ready to go back in her cage. They do very well in pairs but can be fine by themselves given that they get enough attention. They’re a handful but worth it if you have put in the time and effort. And have the patience.

    Actually sounds a lot like dealing with a guinea pig. Constantly cleaning, they make loud noises everytime they notice you and beg for food, only will let you pet em when they are in a good mood but when they do its awesome and everything is worth it.

  • @Otaku4evergirl
    @Otaku4evergirl 5 лет назад +164

    Literally my first time here and I know what you mean. My two brats make so much noise as soon as the lights go out. They could be dead asleep and once they hear the click of the light BOOM they're running around like crazy. When they run on their wheel you can hear it throughout the whole house and sometimes they'll even kick it making a loud bang. The worse thing they, or, the youngest one, Dash, will do is rip holes in the fleece. The oldest, Blaze, will sit there and watch. Then they finish it off with "I'll be good" kisses. LIES!!! They keep being brats XD

    I owned chinchillas for a long time, 4 cages and I definitely know what it’s like to clean every week. We put newspapers under the cages and vacuumed a lot. About the chew toys, they love to chew. It’s how they keep their teeth in check. Their teeth are constantly growing so they need to file them down. That’s why they do that. Each one has its own personality. With petting them, they have a sort of pride sometimes. They’re also highly intelligent. A couple smart chinchillas I had actually learned how to pick the lock on their cage, thus letting themself and their friends out in the middle of the night when they would most likely not get caught. Then someone wakes up and is like “what’s that noise?” Then they enjoy playing and getting into trouble like knocking cans off the shelf and watching them roll down the stairs.

      @@azurebunny6175 Hahaha no no no. Some of them we got after breeders were done with chins so we could give them a really comfty last few years, some had babies we gave to brilliant homes. All of them except one (Poor baby had a few medical problems and we did our best to make her live happy and comfortable until her final days), lived full and happy lives. As a breeder I can definitely say that no you don’t have to get two, they don’t get lonely. When you have two you have the added risk of fighting, I’ve had chins that were together for three years and then one morning they had to be separated and once they fight once you should never risk that again and they must be separated for life. So if you are willing to do that then get two. If not then just stick with one.

    • @Abandonedgirll
      @Abandonedgirll 5 лет назад

      Mya Harblin-Bowlby what you can do is put them in a small space (with super vision) and see how they react get them used to each other if they fight you can have another cage for the other chinchilla for the meantime as they get used to each others scent and ways. Put the cages together start exchanging the toys or items in each other’s cage. Give them play time together when they kind of got used to each other. Or what also you can do is shake the treat bag and they will both be focused on the treats.

    • @myaharblin-bowlby1185
      @myaharblin-bowlby1185 5 лет назад

      Neutral play time has the absolutely lowest success rate of any technique when bonding chinchillas, also I don’t want to put the chinchillas back together because I don’t need to wake up one morning to one dead chinchilla and one severely mutalated one, thank you for the advice though! ❤️ also I don’t give treats, I give hay and pellets, they really shouldn’t have anything else... the only chinchilla safe “treats” that exist are those little tiny apple wood sticks that you can buy.

      InkWolf Creations You can try different ways to pick him up where it’ll be comfortable for him. But some chins just dislike being held and in those cases it’s best to respect their boundaries. The last thing you want to do is damage their trust of you and your relationship💕

      InkWolf Creations my baby chin was like this, he was just really scared of me the first two weeks. I basically just hand fed him (healthy) treats so he associated my smell/hand as a good thing. I have to force pick up my chinchillas because they still don’t love the whole picking up thing but they LOVE being held.

    • @XxXStaypuffXxX

      I think the best way to gain their trust and get her used to being near you and being held is to lock yourself in s room and let your chin just run around and come up to you and stuff. My chin has never once shown any bad attitude and ive had her since she was a baby and thats mainly because I put in a lot of time getting her used to the fact that she could jump on my shoulders and legs and head and stuff and that I wasnt a big scary giant. Good luck!

      spend time with him during playing time talk to him, and hand feed him the treats, hold him and give him treats so he knows its not a scary thing. besically bonding, its all about trust with chinchilla.

      Annelise Dusterberg when you let them out into a safe room to play in, sit or lie on the floor, and just let them come to you. They are very curious, and will likely climb on you or bounce off you as they play. Keep some Cheerios with you, and when they come over and sit on your leg or interact with you in some way, give them a cheerio. The next time you let them out, pet them when they climb on you, and if they don’t immediately bounce away, give them a cheerio. After several sessions of being out with you, they should be a bit more social. Chinchillas have crazy long memories, and it takes a very long time for many to come around and be friendlier. They are also in different moods at different times of the day, so if they seem antisocial in the afternoon try to interact with them at night. I have one cage full of chin brothers who only like to interact in the middle of the night, when I walk past their cage at night to go pee- they will try to get my attention, and if I open the cage door they will all climb out to say hi and get scratches. If I try to interact with them at any other point in the day, they want nothing to do with me lol....

    • @annelise4507
      @annelise4507 5 лет назад

      sweets08816 I have tried that for about 2-3 hours and they just go to hide in the hidey box I put out for them

    • @Boredchinchilla
      @Boredchinchilla 5 лет назад

      Annelise Dusterberg sometimes it takes months to start to bring them around (and sometimes they don’t ever become really friendly!but you can usually get them to be a bit more social). One way that often works to get them to interact with you is to totally ignore them- sit in the room with them, but read a book or watch videos and don’t pay attention to them. Often this will bring them to you just because they don’t like to be ignored (especially if you usually interact with them when they are out playing). This way you are giving them the choice to interact with you, rather than trying to force something that they may not want.
      I got a rescue chin that lived with a bunny and dogs that harassed him constantly, and the owner blew pot smoke at him all day long (he thought it would calm him). It took me two years to get him to a point where I can finally scratch his head with out fear of being bit- and He got some spectacular bites in during the first year or so. I still have nerve damage in my thumb from one bite. Now he comes to the door and waits for scratches and complements on how handsome he is lol. He will never be a chin that comes out to play or be held, but he seems content and happy in his cage with his saucer and a tv playing cartoons 24/7. Some chins take.a very long time fo trust you, and some just don’t have a personality where they want to deal with people- if you make it worth their while with scratches and treats, they will usually at least stop hating your guts, but it may take a ridiculously long time...good luck.

    The chinchilla notebook, HOW do you clean your fleece liners? I’ve resorted to kiln dried pine shavings which are great but super messy. I’d love to go back to fleece since I’m going to be moving into a rental and I want to keep everything as clean as possible. but how do you get all the hay and poop off without junking up the washer? I tried to vacuum them and sweep them with a mini broom and dust pan but I always ended up taking them outside to shake them out before I washed them and my parents got really mad because chinchilla poop and hay were in the back yard. Also, what about urine smells? The only way I could get the smell out of the fleece and out of the washer is to soak the liners in a solution of water and urine cleaner which was super expensive. My chin doesn’t have a UTI or anything. According to the vet, he just has strong urine after all tests came back normal. Thanks in advance, I love your channel! :)

      @@mistermomo2904 I highly advice getting chins or even owls, I've had a barn owl and raven before, they were all very nice. And once you live with chinchillas and see them often, they just have a constant derpy look on their face lol. They wink at you sometimes too, its a sign of bonding with eye contact. I will admit they can be freaky in 2 ways, so I can see your point. First reason is that they barely need to blink, I one time counted how many times one of my chins blinked in a whole hour, and it was only 5 times. They stare alot. Second reason is they sleep with their eyes open often, so it is hard to tell if they are awake or sleeping. It looks very odd lol.

      I have both Guinea pigs and a chinchilla, while it won't cause harm for them to be in the same room or if you and a friend are socializing with your animals and they are holding one and you another and they are near each other at least in my experience it will not hurt them. Of course this will depend on several factors including the temperament of the animals involved, and of course you'd want to think about illnesses that could be transmitted from one rodent to another, but with all this in mind they can be near each other depending on their temper. But never never cage them together as they have extremely different needs and housing two different rodents together would be so bad. I will say my chinchilla is extremely social among other animals(I swear he is fearless), he loves my dog and will come down to the bottom of cage when the dog is near and stick is nose out to touch his nose to the dog's nose. And he has also attempted such with the cats but he just ended up scaring them away and they don't go near his cage now.

    I remember we had a false bottom for our chinchillas' cage (we had two males, then accidentally got a female so we had like 10 but then all the males died mysteriously so we were left with two ladies) so all you needed to do to clean the cage most of the time was take out the bottom, dump it into the bin, then line it (we used newspaper). It worked really well. Also another pro is that you don't really need to worry about lots of common pests like fleas for the most part because their fur is so thick that they don't like it. Doesn't mean it's impossible but it is a lot less likely. And yes about the softness! They're the softest thing I have ever touched.

      The Chinchilla Notebook My kids see cats and dogs but I just tell them sometimes it is best to leave pets to people who have time and money. I have pet mice but even though I only clean the cage every 5 days or so and spot clean everyday my kids school life really makes having another kind of animal hard. I don’t know how some parents can have a dog with little kids

    Was told to NEVER have a single chinchilla, and always have at least two?

      Lukas Holtum Yup, that is true. Always keep two together. If you want to know why Merlin lives alone, I have a video called Can Chinchillas Live Alone that I explain it😊💕

      Actually you can keep one. 2 isn't required if you spend a good amount of time with them. If you can get 2 that are bonded and are the same sex. NEVER mix an unbonded pair.

      Chayzz Devyant Unfortunately no amount of human interaction can make up for the company of a fellow Chinchilla. They will naturally crave the presence of another of their kind and it’s just not a good idea to deprive them of that unless they can’t live with another one. They are extremely social animals and even if you spend all day with them, it doesn’t match up to that interaction with another chinnie. It’s very hard keeping a single chinnie but if you do, it’s best to get one that doesn’t mind being alone and that would rather not have another chinnie living with them💕

    I also want a chinchilla. Actually I just want a pet. Even a little fish would be nice. Once I said: I want a rabbit. My parents said no. Later i said: I want a teckel/daschund. My mom then said: I don't want that thing. Then i said: I want a chinchilla. My dad said: A chinchilla?!?! Do that in your own time! I just want one and i have read that they have a lifespan of 10 years. I could grow up with it and when im older and live alone still have a companion.
    Sorry for my bad english

    I have cats and birds and have always wanted a chinchilla. Those toys look just like the kinds of things that I make for my birds! And the constant mess sounds pretty familiar 😂 I've been waiting until I live someplace with central ac before I get one though. 😊
