As a proud chinchilla owner, I can say with confidence that it isn’t worth it to buy the expensive chew toys from Etsy shops or Amazon, however cute they may initially be. I have found that it is much more affordable to purchase bulk materials (like willow balls, pumice stone, or natural loofah) from Amazon or Etsy shops and make your own toys by simply drilling a hole through each item and stringing it onto a thin chinchilla-safe stick or twine. I have also come to the conclusion that making your own wooden houses and perches is much cheaper and lets you get exactly what you need for your cage. I usually go to a local hardware/wood store and buy large pieces of pine for a relatively low cost then just chop it up at home. You can also buy screws, washers, and bolts/nuts to secure it to the cage for really low prices. It is kind of impossible to keep prices down while owning these animals, but buying things in bulk (fleece scraps from fabric stores especially) really help to make it more affordable. Nebula is adorable!
I just can’t get over your kindness! Nebula is the cutest little thing I’ve ever seen! You adopt these animals and give them the best home they can ever ask for!! I own seven rats and I’ve learned basically everything from your care and what to do and how to do it, so I will be sad when you are done owning rats, but I will still always watch you !!
For house protection look up how to bunny proof a house - it will be the same thing - also for skirting boards spefically you can get edge protectors - they are see through or white plastic that attaches to the edges of things like that and wall edges etc
Chin owner here! This setup change is awesome it’s so great to see her getting proper care now. For stores, Etsy is so great for finding chin stuff even though it can be a little expensive which these furry buddies are. RosaliesGrove for apple sticks for a reasonable price and then Pandemonium Pets and Chinvilla for toys, hides, and ledges are my recommendations, their quality is always great. These are all US based Etsy shops though so I’m not sure how shipping costs will differ
Omg! So excited and so weird as i have done exactly the same as you, decided to no longer own rats and I have adopted two chinchillas. I can already see in your screenshot that we have some of the same things including the cute upside down plant pot. I've never owned chins before and my goodness they are so adorable and special little guys. Your little girl is gorgeous, mine are a little shy and I've been working with them but I think it will just take time for them to get used to me. Look forward to the video ❤

But wouldn't it be better to go way above the minimum? Why not invest in a realy big cage instead of paying a lot for the minimum? They don't seem like a species which would let space go to waste ;) And many people watch your videos as guides.

Ethical rescues here advise slightly bigger and I’ve got one of / the biggest cages you can buy on the market. Besides building a DIY enclosure it doesn’t get much bigger than this. She’s so cute! I heard you mention a wheel, maybe things have changed since I got a chinchilla but I always heard wheels are a no no, but I may be totally wrong.

However, I very much understand and agree with your decision. I feel like the chinchillas will fill in that void for me. Can’t wait to watch them in your future videos!
I have been so excited to watch this video since you posted her little hands on IG! I am so grateful that you're going to be posting chinchilla care content because proper information feels a lot harder to find for Chins vs other small animals and I know you will be contributing to better care for the species as current and new owners research! I have two rescue chins, Lili who I've had since she was 6 months old (who is now 10 years old!) and Lola who is around 6 and I've had for 4 years. I would love love to see your experience bonding your chinchillas because I originally adopted Lola with the hopes of bonding her with Lili. I tried several methods over the course of a year (but could not bring myself to try the 'smush' method - which the rescue I adopted Lola from recommended, but I had seen mix information on how humane it is online) and in the end I decided it was too much stress on them to bond, and they currently live in their own separate double critter nation cages. So I wish you the best of luck with your bonding experience and I also hope to learn from you! For chewing base boards, I have a similar plastic border but about three times taller because Lili tries to jump over the shorter ones. But I do still have to supervise her of course and gently direct her away from the plastic boards if she tries to chew on them. Lola doesn't really pay them any mind. I’m so obsessed now I must have one or 2. I remember my childhood friend had two who would she would let out after school and they would jump all over us and be so sweet
Pumice stone is a good chew toy for their teeth. A cooling rock or granite slab is good for them to regulate temperature. Good luck with her and her friend 💕
Her tail could be that way because one of the dogs or people stepped on her tail fluff. They can also stress fur slip tail fluff as well as their regular fur. Which that looks like that might be Nebula’s case
She is so cute! I plan on getting chinchillas in a few years when I hopefully live in a bigger place. Curently 1 dog, 1 hamster and 4 rats in a one bedroom appartment😂 I'm so exited to see chinchillas on the chanel and Nebula is such a beautiful name!❤

Omg I'm SO PSYCHED!!! I got my rescue chinchilla a couple years ago and you're my favourite pet channel, I can't wait to see your chinchilla-owning journey and your setups and products you use!! 💕 Nebby is soooo cute and fluffy I love her! My chinchilla's name is Comet! Space names ftw :D
Congrats on your adorable baby! My Chinny person advice is as follows, fleece liners are much easier to clean and I have never had one that did anything with shavings bedding other than kicking it out of the cage. I found that young chins are voracious chewers of furniture, theirs and mine, and it helps to have distracting objects they can chew, but you still have to watch them like a hawk. Chinchillas have an instinctual feer of rats so probably best to keep them well separated. And lastly most economical chin treats are human loose leaf herbal teas, favorites include hibiscus or camomile flowers. Enjoy.
I hate having to do washing and I’m always behind on my own washing so fleece liners wouldn’t work well for me 😊 I’m going to be keeping the chins in this room and then once I no longer have rats anymore in a few months time they’ll be moving into the pet room
I hope the pine wood and shavings has been specially made for chinchillas because if they aren't extra dried (specialy dried removing the sap and resin) then pine wood is pretty toxic to lil friendus just because of that i only use extra dried apple wood and birch branches for gnawing better safe than risk :) Ive been a godmother to chinchilla and rn being momma to two lovely degu girls so i wanna wish u all the best with this lovely baby
I can’t wait to get chins😀 As soon as my son moves out I’m getting a pair of chins I want to keep them in separate room so they can play time outside of the cage and it’s chin proofed and safe
So cute, I've been putting off getting chinchillas, stoll so much to learn and I don't have the space. It will be a few years before I can commit to some.. Gotta be sensible. But will be watching the comments and videos to learn more.
She is adorable and it's cool of you to adopt her and get her a pal. It surprises me though that as someone who's allergic to rats, a chinchilla doesn't bother you. I've wanted a chinchilla, a rabbit or a guinea pig pretty much all my life but my allergy to fur AND to hay makes it impossible :/
They tend to be a lot more hypoallergenic for those of us who are allergic to Rat urine. I'm fine with fur and hay as long as its good quality and its been a nice surprise how little she smells compared to the rats
Chinchilla 'chew toys': leather belt, cage bottom, wall corners, pencils and the list continues. These are not recommendations, just a couple of things my chinchilla got her teeth on. She's over 16yo now, got her in January 2008 :) Good luck with your new friend :D
You did such a great job on her environment and cage despite the kid only getting bored after a few months! She really feels comfortable with you!!! ❤❤
I want a chinchilla so badly but I live in Florida 😅 I have bought an extra air conditioner window unit, so I could set it up in a small room to help keep it cooler. I may test it out this summer to be safe, and if I can keep the room at chin temps, then maybe this winter I will adopt!
Try Vinted for stuff as you might find more bargains on there and you could do a video of pet stuff from Vinted and get stuff for river and Hubble and all the other pets aswell
When it comes to chinchillas the bigger the cage the better, wheels aren't the best for them and they tend not to use them. Oxbow is a really good brand for hay and some of their treats are really good for chinchillas and my chinchillas are obsessed. Also shavings under really great for chinchillas you are better off using wood pellets. I have six chinchillas now in two cages and they all have different likes and needs. It is likely she might have had issues with her teeth as they grind they teeth down on hay nd wood and she didn't have much. As for skirting boards , I just have to keep my chinchillas as far away as possible and monitor them as they used to try and get them through the cage as well. Also a really good thing to give them is apple sticks that are basically small apple branches, chinchilla love them and they are really good for them to chew.
Wheels are fine as long as they’re an appropriate size and they’re not excessively using them in the heat, she uses hers every day 😊 Bedding is a personal preference, I’m not a fan of wood pellets for small pets but kiln dried pine shavings aren’t going to hurt them. Luckily my vet has a good look at all her teeth and they’re fine 🤞🏼 must have just been due to poor diet staining her fur
I have only seen chinchillas in pictures before and thought they were cute and all but that's about it. I've also been told that they're quite "hard" to take care of because of how sensitive and skiddish they are, but omg she is SO cute❤🥺
Yeah I understand wanting to wait a little to make sure you have everything! I seen kittens on facebook once and reached out to the person who had them and asked if she would hold one of them until the next day until I could get the basics but ended up getting her sister so two kittens in one day sadly the cat tree came next day after ordering it but then I noticed one of my cats liked to drink out of the sink I got a water fountain bowl for her and even now I’m still buying stuff for them 😅
When I went to view my cat Hubble when he was about 4 weeks old I drove all the way and the woman said “you can take him today if you want” absolutely not. I had nothing and I wanted him to stay with his siblings. She gave all the siblings away the next day so the poor boy was alone for a week in a cage until I got sorted and went to get him
Shes absolutely gorgeous 🥰 wonder if her friends name will be Cosmo 😅 fits the theme and its cute, that's what I'd go with. Can't wait to see him and learn his name!
If your rescue friends allow for meetings/pair bonding at the rescue, that would be easiest for you (at least from my experience). I did NOT do that and it took over a year for successful pair bonding for 2 sets. While I’m not usually a fan of the carrier method for bonding animals, this is what worked for the second pair. Definitely a more stressful process than bonding rabbits and rats, in my opinion. For skirting boards, I don’t have any great recommendations, but maybe you could cover with additional boards that can be chewed?
If I lived closer to the rescue I’m sure they wouldn’t mind me doing it but they’re 3 hours away so it’s already a big stress going there and staying overnight 🥲
I love chinchillas as well I have two boys as well as 9 rats 😊 I looking forward to see the boy chinchilla as well as you go about bonding them. My two boys live separate and from what I heard they are not so easy to bond. I look forward to your tips on how to bond them
17:14 you might of found a solution for this but i use edge protectors i don't recommend the white plastic ones because they chew through them but i found white metal ones at the hardware store and they worked for me 👍
Chinchillas are one of the things I would never adopt again, they are very cute and can be very affectionate but the amount they poop a day is not worth it in my opinion. The Chinchilla was very easy to make happy if you had the knowledge and patience... I did not have the patience and my knowledge while good wasn't great. He deserved someone who didn't mind the mess and his antics, he also only lived to 7 compared to the potential 15.... he was given to my sister who I lived with btw so I didn't just give him to anyone. His name was Dakota to go with my rabbit Sioux's name, they died exactly 6 months apart from eachother.
Well, with two chins, maybe make a pine barrier to go against the wall. Otherwise you may need to replace the skirting board altogether since they are avid chewers. I really wanted chins however after researching and realising I couldn't give them their cage in their own room with pine flooring and skirting boards I decided against it as they do need time out to play. I adopt unwanted hamsters instead.😊
So this is what a chinchilla cage should look like!!! I always see empty cages… tiny too… Happy to see real and good ones
She’s gorgeous and I’m so surprised you have a vet that will do home visits, that’s really great.
HELP IM DYING WHEN SHE ROLLS IN THE DUST IS SO FUNNY

Chinchilla 'chew toys': leather belt, cage bottom, wall corners, pencils and the list continues. These are not recommendations, just a couple of things my chinchilla got her teeth on. She's over 16yo now, got her in January 2008 :)
Good luck with your new friend :D
You did such a great job on her environment and cage despite the kid only getting bored after a few months! She really feels comfortable with you!!! ❤❤
Chins are fun from what I see on YT. Too hot in FL unless you can afford a huge electric bill. Good luck.
Etsy is your best friend when it comes to chinchilla toys! I buy most of mine off there and they’re a decent price!
i actually love chinnies sm
I want a chinchilla so badly but I live in Florida 😅 I have bought an extra air conditioner window unit, so I could set it up in a small room to help keep it cooler. I may test it out this summer to be safe, and if I can keep the room at chin temps, then maybe this winter I will adopt!
Try Vinted for stuff as you might find more bargains on there and you could do a video of pet stuff from Vinted and get stuff for river and Hubble and all the other pets aswell
She is adorable I was planning on getting chinchillas but did not have the room so got gerbils instead
Wheels are fine as long as they’re an appropriate size and they’re not excessively using them in the heat, she uses hers every day 😊
Bedding is a personal preference, I’m not a fan of wood pellets for small pets but kiln dried pine shavings aren’t going to hurt them.
She gave all the siblings away the next day so the poor boy was alone for a week in a cage until I got sorted and went to get him
So cute! Good luck with your new friends :D
Shes absolutely gorgeous 🥰 wonder if her friends name will be Cosmo 😅 fits the theme and its cute, that's what I'd go with. Can't wait to see him and learn his name!
I’m so exiteeddddd!!!
the parkour & the trying not to breathe was my favorite part 😭😂
I look forward to your tips on how to bond them
Nebula is very cute. I hope you don't have any difficulties with them. ❤
17:14 you might of found a solution for this but i use edge protectors i don't recommend the white plastic ones because they chew through them but i found white metal ones at the hardware store and they worked for me 👍
White metal ones would be ideal! I’ve only found silver ones so far
I will definitely get chinchillas in the future
So adorable
I always wanted to pet one. People say they have very soft fur! 😄😆❤
Perhaps for the skirting board have then replaced with plain pine ones. It's something I would consider to make it a more chin safe play area.
We’re moving in the next year or so so I don’t want to do anything too permanent 😊
Is she just free roaming that room? I love nebula she has so much personality
Maybe try rat rations for some chew toys as they have some big sturdy ones and they might last longer ❤
so cute!! ❤
Chinchillas chew their houses❤
Check out the chinchilla lady! She has great toys and lots of deals 😊 for the skirting boards I use a play pen because mine destroyed them 😅
YAY!! Chins are the best! But I’m a little biased because I have my little boy 😂 congrats on your new baby!!❤
You finally did it!! Congrats♥️♥️💯
