I'm still waiting for a first person game that recognizes and acknowledges you nodding or shaking your head in response to things. How hard can it be to implement?!
When I saw the thumbnail I thought "Oh hell no, you better not be saying Alyx is the worst character." Then I watched the first minute and was relieved.
Yes, the whole moral of this video is a facade. VR. doesn't change much. Sure, you can react to the environment (in game), but the environment doesn't respond to you (except for the physics objects.).
Gordon Freeman is our avatar, he's the literally us. Basically, we "act" as Gordon every time we follow a storyline character and nod/shake our head in response, ironically expressing emotions on our real face in front of the monitor
2:10 brilliant editing, had no idea where you were going with this, and raising your hand to her just communicates a lot. And it's true, in a VR game people just do that, they like to act and get involved, even if the game does not recognise your action.
Alyx has reactions to your input. In the beginning, when you're at gunpoint inside the elevator, you can try pressing buttons and grabbing the cop's gun and they'll react by either verbally scolding you or attacking you with a slap or a punch. Not every scene with other NPCs is so responsive, but it was one of the moments where the game really felt like you were in a Half-Life story instead of just a map of City 17.
Remember when gabe said that the environment had to react to the player choices, else it will have a narcissistic injury? An important part of choices is result. Sure you can be more expressive in VR, but if they basically don't react to your actions, that's not really important. It is basically just the same as the non-vr game.
You're not wrong, and reacting would be great, but I found it fun to express myself in VR even without reactions. "It’s fun, like dancing in your living room or singing in the shower." I get that not everyone is a huge dork like me.
NPCs can't react to your VR specific player choices (except for the "Pick-up that can" Metrocop who will beat you if you flip him off), but the enviroment absolutely does react to you. You can manipulate the weapons you hold to be in whatever angle you want with a finesse that isn't present with mouse and keyboard. You can physically grab and manipulate objects and corpses in the enviroment. The only things that won't react to you touching and grabbing them are NPCs. Though who knows? Maybe one day, someone will make a PLANCK-style mod (mod in Skyrim VR that allows you to touch and grab the NPCs) and make it not too janky. Or at the very, expand on interactions like the one I mentioned from the Metrocop.
3:30 Man this part is really deep and sad, my interpretation of Gordon has always been like this, the man who has suffered and feels the loss of others
Half Life: Alyx also involves the player's hands masterfully. I found myself emoting with my hands in the cutscenes in time with the dialog in subtitles and what I thought the response would be, and I was very rarely off the mark. VR is still an absolute menace when it comes to barriers to entry with a high cost in hardware and space required to utilize it, but the interactivity is truly groundbreaking in a way previously unseen in the medium.
If you haven't already play the episodes. Both the base HL2 and Alyx have very limited time with characters, but the Episodes are almost entirely spent with other characters.
He's overshadowed by the other characters but I always liked wayneradiotv's Gordon. Maybe he's not the best Gordon but he's great for his own series or even just the one from Half-Life Full Regret because of the cool sprites
Half Life 2 VR mod has become a yearly tradition for me. When I get home for Christmas Break, I’ll boot up my old PC, and VR headset, and play through the game. This year was special because I finally played Episode 2 for the first time, and it was great in VR.
This endorses me because i'm actually writting a fanfic about the inner thoughts of Gordon during HL2 and his dialogues with every important character all based on what my idea of his personality is thanks to interactions with the likes of Eli, Barney, Kleiner and, most importantly, Alyx. He's just a simple guy who doesn't talk much and even less bacause all the trauma of Black Mesa is still fresh on his mind. That said it was kinda hard to write how Gordon grown fond to Vortigaunts despite having PTSD from them.
I feel like the (ongoing) second season of Freeman's Mind is exactly how Gordon would act in HL2, a traumatized guy running on adrenaline, hate and the two shots of vodka he had for breakfast 20 years ago.
@HyakuSh1ki As a fan of Freeman's Mind myself I was inspired by it but I took the calmer and more scientist focused side of Gordon instead of the mute action hero or the high on morphine maniac ones. Also PTSD Gordon was always an i teresting matter to me because poor guy went to work and a week later was topping a totalitarian alien government.

I see your points, and you've put it better than most. But all that is done with the mouse... you can express yourself with a mouse but that doesn't make me feel like an actor, it doesn't make me feel like I'm in the scene. VR does. It offers all those same things, only done with your head and your hands, and there is more you can do in VR that you can't with a mouse and keyboard. I made this video because back when I first played episode one like 20 years ago, Alyx put her hand on the glass elevator door and all I could do was stand there. I felt like the biggest jerk in the world. Now I can be a more like a human being.
Now, I need responsive AI when I tell Alyx its gonna be ok , she tells me thank you, and that touching her shoulder makes her respond that its a comfort. Then , there is literally nothing more to do. That would be insane
