- Kapsalon is one of my all-time favourite fast foods packed with everything fries, seasoned meat, cheese, and salad an all-in-one dish easy to make at home.
Kapsalon is a fast-food dish created in 2003 in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, consisting of a layer of French fries, topped with döner or gyro meat, replaced in many places with chicken for convenience, covered with Gouda cheese, and cheddar and heated in an oven until the cheese melts. Then a layer of shredded iceberg lettuce is added, dressed with garlic sauce a hot sauce of choice. The term Kapsalon is Dutch for "hairdressing salon", alluding to one of the inventors of the dish who worked as a hairdresser.

Kapsalon in Dutch means barber shop.
Nathaniël Gomes, owner of kapsalon Tati in Rotterdam, wanted to eat something different in 2003, and asked the neighboring kebab shop to make something with fries and kebab meat; later cheese was also added over it. If someone else had to go get it on behalf of Nathaniel, it was difficult to explain exactly what he wanted in the Kebab shop. “Tell them you're from the kapsalon, then they'll know,” Gomes advised in such cases. And so the name "Kapsalon" was born. Or so the story goes.
There are many variations of it here in The Netherlands now, my favorite uses falafel instead of kebab meat.
Thanks wojamacolit. best, Rik
I've been living in the Netherlands for about a year now and really like the occasional kapsalon. I'd never heard of it, but if you like gyros or kebabs then you'll likely also enjoy a nice kapsalon.
Although I love this dish, the only thing Dutch in it is the Gouda Cheese. The influence is Indian, Indonesian and the U.K.. I like to make a ranch style dressing, add three garlic cloves, a touch of tarragon and fresh cracked pepper. However, my favorite late night indulgence is Poutine. I make up everything from scratch during the day, then put it in the fridge. That night, I do the chips in the air fryer and construct the most enjoyable dish ever created. The gravy is the secret. Sorry to ramble on like that....Have a great day everyone!!
Thank you. Best, Rik
What an interesting recipe. A Dutch take on a French Canadian classic: poutine!
Not a take on poutine at all.
@@user-jl8wg2eh3f it's Belgian in origin too. Dutch, before them Belgians said their goodbyes. Like 'french' fries are Belgian in origin... The potato eaters (which is a thing for obvious reasons) is similar, even though van Gogh was wandering about in France a lot... Dipping fries in a fatty substance has been a thing for us since Europeans got them taters from the Inca's - and spread them around the globe.
@@casper8464 The Europeans ate the leafy parts and didn't like it. Haha... Fact.
What is Canadian/French about it? Its Shoarma (lambs, or chicken) with saled, chees and fried patato' s (patat) and garlicsaus.
I completely understand your comment and would like to say that I'll take my Poutine over Kapsalon any day..LOL..Stay Healthy my friend!!
Masala?😂 its not a curry... its actialy shaorma
No, it's not it's Kapsalon like it says it is - quite clearly tells you what it is. Best, Rik
