- 31142 what a lovely old bus to drive, these are hands down one of the best deckers to drive in my opinion. The suspension is very absorbing and forgiving on these beasts and they have a lot of power and grunt

My local depot in Great Yarmouth retired their last 3 51 Plate ALX400s in 2022. I believe First Eastern Counties still have 3 2003-2005 models in operation 1 in Lowestoft and 2 in Ipswich

I remember when Brighton And Hove buses had these. I always loved going on these buses. Just the sounds are enough to bring back fond memories.

I used to see these on the Arriva 176 buses before they got new buses! I've driven the Dennis version (8.5.litre) on Route 172 and 381.
Used to enjoy riding this batch in Leeds, We had 31142-47 & always & always thought they were better than the older ALX400s they had in regards to faster speed, nice ZF sounds & comfier seating.
Ahh! I haven’t seen one of these in a while now. I remember the Brighton And Hove livery. The sounds of this bus bring back memories of being a little kid going out with my dad to Brighton City Centre. Thank you so much for this wonderful piece of nostalgia for me.
Absolutely love alx400s grew up with them in London but we have very few left now

Leicester had about 30 of these beasts. Were all sent away in 2015. Now we are left with 4 Wright Eclipse Gemini B7TLs, with all our other deckers being Streetdecks. These were my favourite buses around. I missed them when they went and still do. I hope I can get on one before they all go. Good video per the normality.
Streetdecks are god awful

ALX400 is my 2nd favourite bus
The things I've always liked about driving these buses: The moany volvo engine sound and the cute little turbo whistle that goes with it. The ZF acceleration noise (Hated the voith). The pickup scream after 40mph. The smooth airbed ride. The front wheels follow an effortless dead straight line with no hands on the wheel.
Things I didn't like: The huge weight of the bus. Drives round corners like a concerete high rise building. T Rex dinosaur 'howling' with low speed braking. The suspension related rattling and clattering. Nearly 6 full turns of the steering wheel before you get near a full lock. The 'Kneel' suspension not dropping very far down. Sluggish And painfully slow to accelerate.
Think a Dennis trident would better
@@losangelaramos4708 In what universe. Most dennis tridents are terrible. They are made cheap and drive as such. The retarder send you and the passengers flying everytime it engages, when you get down to 10mph where it turns off it kicks the bus, so if you got passengers standing up you can hear their shopping rustle and them running forward trying not to fall. It also crashes over bumps and doest really absorb them, the mirrors are terrible, the brake feel on most of them is non-existent, the seating and pedal position is uncomfortable... I could go on all day. Sadly the depot I work at has a huge amount of these and I hate every day when I have to drive them. They are inferior to anything else, even from Dennis themselves. the only positive I can bring up about it is that it has a good engine sound and it has high steering angle so you can get around in tight spaces easier. Most people who love tridents love them because either they have been driving them for 10+ years or because they only drove dennis buses, and by dennis standards its the least worst model which is up for debate. Since I get to drive scanias as well and experience what a real bus drives like I know how garbage the trident is. The fact that the scania buses have the same brake system as trucks so you actually get brake control shows that scania actually gave a shit about how the bus drives when they designed it. Dennis? Not so much. Their newer E400 mmc is fine, but the retarder is jerky even on that.

I think I drove this bus when it was brand new. IIRC it first entered service at the Cherry Row depot in Leeds on the 56 Moor Grange - Whinmoor route. By far of my favourite buses to drive ever.

I’m curious, were 31142-31147 always intended for Leeds or were they diverted from South Yorkshire? It seems a bit odd looking on buslistsontheweb and having 31129-31141 and 31148 listed as new to Mainline with 31142-31147 down as for Yorkshire Rider.
First South Yorkshire haven't got many left now as they are have scrapped alot of them including this one. I've always like B7TL's as they are quick and excellent workhorses.. I've driven a B7TL Wright Gemini Eclipse at First Potteries Adderley Green depot at their open day in 2017. Very nice to drive.
Sounds fantastic Shaun! We’ve got an identically sounding one on a President body here in Norwich! It’s numbered 32107 and It’s been living its days getting floored on the A11 now mostly!
First West Yorkshire have got rid of alot of older ALX400's B7TL's now but good to see that First South Yorkshire have still got a few left. These do go when you put your foot down.

Great video. Someday I am going to preserve one of these buses although I am going for a full height version which will be one of the TCZ or BEZ versions if I can get one of those. Otherwise it will be an ex-London one like one of the Arriva VLA class buses. I have to say that the ride on these is always smooth and comfortable and these buses would make great double deck coaches in my opinion. I assume this one is a ZF Ecomat?

Nice to see another video. Saw you in Sheffield interchange last Thursday, think you were on a 36, and you were parked on the same stand I wanted to put my x17 on haha! Don't know who thinks timetabling those two at the same time on the same stand is a good idea... Gave you a wave as I drove past but you weren't looking my way.

@@ThatYorkshireBusDriver I think Stagecoach just want the x17 as close to the x78 as possible to try and steal passengers to meadowhall! We used to share c1 when the Barnsley extension first started, but apparently there were too many complaints from both first and our drivers that the other was spending too much time on c1 so we were swapped to c2. Like you say though, c3 would make more sense. Or even just go back to b4 like we used to use for chesterfield.
Joe Green I agree but i use c3 if an x17 is on stand, I’ve seen drivers argue over that stand.

Always wanted to ride on a b7 in Sheffield but they don't run then anymore does anyone have any idea why
I used to watch these and think ‘gosh, buses are quite sluggish’ but after a week in a Dennis Dart then another in a Dennis Javelin I’m suddenly seeing these almost like racing cars 😂

I like the buses you sit down and it's just like a diesel bus is supposed to be a beast of a bus but the indicator is annoying cause it's very loud you can here it from upstairs lot of wear and tear on the old first buses why the company still uses them
