I used Dart SLf for 12 years, like you say, they were one of the best to drive, didn't have any hot start issues on the ones I was driving, had Marshall, East lancs, Plaxton and Alexander bodied at the garage I worked from, sometimes the back suspension would bang on cornering and split turbo pipes would make for a slow bus! All in all I've very fond memories, they even made a model of the exact bus I used W215 DNO, stagecoach 34215. Happy days. 👍

7.8/10 not enough rattling. On a serious note, there is something oddly entertaining about buying an old bus like that and just using it as you would any other vehicle, like taking mates down to the pub and all. My dream vehicle would be an old bus on a Scania L94UB bus like a Access Flowline or Solar, purely for the sound but I think I'd gotta focus efforts on learning to drive beforehand!

This reminds me of a primary school I used to attend back when I lived in Australia back in the early 2000s, as their school bus they used for excursions _(edit: at the time)_ used to belong to Transperth for one of their public bus services. The Transperth logos on the livery were removed, but there were still some stickers for warnings and such on the inside, and if I recall correctly, remnants of where the old MultiRider card reader used to be installed.

I qualified in 2002 with first capital London. I learnt to drive in an ex Birmingham wmpte 1980 mcw metrobus which belonged to an outside training school. I was then allocated to rainham depot in Essex. I drove dart slfs with Marshall bodies which were registered LT 02 one I remember was LT 02 NUM. I thought it was quite apt being registered LT. I wonder if it was coincidence or first specifically asked for that being under tfl operations. We had two lengths of them DMS which were single door and DML which had two doors. They were fun to drive and ours seemed to have quite a punch to them maybe because they were new

135 hp sounds quite underpowered, yes, especially since it also has to drive a compressor for the air brakes and the suspension. That said, we had *really* underpowered buses in our city for a while, those damn hybrids. Not only were they very loud - both inside and outside - when running on Diesel, or especially when starting the Diesel engine, but they were also dog slow. I live in a hilly city, and those hybrids - despite being shorter than the fulltime Diesel busses (Volvo 8700 or something, with the extra axle in the back) - couldnt go uphill faster than about 25km/h (that's about 15 mph for you peasants who are still living in the 19th century). They also had about a one-second gap between the electric motor switching off and the Diesel engine starting to pull, very uncomfortable for the passengers and nasty on those uphill bus stops. We as passengers are glad the city got rid of them, and the new buses (Volvo 8900) are much better.

Most hybrid bus drivers developed the technic of once you could tell it was going to change from electric to the engine, take foot off the accelerator, then bang it back down relatively fast. Same with the gear changes too. The telemetrics system didn't like it though.

  • @CrazyStuff1112

what I don't get is the specced top speed on the Euro 3 Darts is 49mph (and I did actually go on a 2005 one maxed out at 49mph on an A-road) yet I was on an L-reg Dart with East Lancs EL2000 body back in 2009 on an A-road and motorway, doing 60mph? why did Dennis/TransBus/ADL deem it necessary to make them 11mph slower? only for an E200 I was on on a motorway to do 63mph?
