    This is my analysis/reaction to the beautiful Whitney Houston performing "Home," Live on the Merv Griffin Show, 1983. This song is originally from the musical, "the Wiz." As her debut performance, Whitney poured a lot of emotion into it, really delivering the lyrics with conviction. She gives us a wide range of timbres, from airy to full and clear. There are some really powerful belts here. Also love the runs she gives us, many of which are so fast and sharp.
    I am a jazz/R&B vocalist, baritone saxophone player, music educator, and vocal coach local to New Orleans. I have two degrees in jazz/music education and work professionally playing music. Thank you for all the support on these videos! It is such a joy to create educational, entertaining content for you. I’m looking forward to making more reactions, as well as expanding on ways to create educational/music related content for all of you. I’m so grateful for every one of you!

    Whiney was 19 there. She was already the best story teller in pop music back then obviously 👏🏾

    Fun story about this performance: her mother had to go backstage and get the band together DURING the second half of the song when they started to fall apart. She was right behind the curtain and you can see her conducting them to get in sync.

    From one Whitney Fan to another... WAY TO GO SIS!!!... Love Ur Review.. I was SPECIFICALLY looking for a Review to THIS song by Whitney.. I have some Musical Theater experience.. not much.. but also grew up in Church and lemme tell U sis.. they're basically the SAME THING..lol.. Ur "preforming" on stage in front of a lot of people every week!!.. 😇🙏.. Also.. many other Opera or "classically" trained Reactors.. who have reviewed Whitney have noticed her "Operetic" quality in her voice.. To my knowledge she never took any Professional Vocal Training.. other than growing up in Church and having a well known Grammy Award Winning Gospel singer for a Mom (Cissy Houston).. As far as the "mix or nasally" voice of other female singers who came BEFORE Whitney..look for great nasally power house voices of.. Barbara Streisand and Diana Ross!!... Which I'm sure influenced Whitney growing up (as well as her Mom)..just as SHE has influenced Mariah and Arianna and others who we are listening 2day... Thnx so much "cuz"...lol. . Toni Marshall Torres. ..😉✌️❤️😎👍👍

    Whitney is the Golden Standard for most. She has amazing power, Beautiful tone very clear head voice. To be fair though most of singers where she came from are about as good. (Cece Winans comes from same school and sounds almost like a more bright sound Whitney,mostly cause she mixing easier and stay at chest less,Nataly cole as well and many many of that era) she is mixing the old school Lyrical Gospel (that is her mother) along with some RnB elements. Her style and peoples Awe comes mostly because of her impeccable chesty power,constant vibrato at almost every word and the sweetness of the aftertaste that leaves her head notes. Musicality vise though she is using over and over the same kind of runs,riffs and stylistic elements and technic and its quite limited although beautiful. She took most of her technic stylistic elements by her mother,cousin (D worwick) and godmother Aretha Franklin. Fun fact rumor has it that her record label returned back and made her rerecord her first recording album cause her sound was too familiar with Aretha and they did not wanted that. Very similar situation with Mariah early as about 1992 someone told Mariah to bright her sound if she want to stay relevant and not disappear cause she was too similar with Whitney and also that sound was already old and there wasn't much space for others at that sound (other than Whitney).And as we saw Mariah already started shifting from that soul/gospel sound at 1993 and afterwards....What made Whitney though so special was her Stage performance she had so much energy and soul that could uplift everyone even when her voice was not in good shape (but sadly that was a big part of her being on drugs pretty much all the time,specially at her performances...). Her music style is not aging nicely though cause if you go back and see her earlier performances its over dramatic,over shout y/ loud and its like back in the day we were listen to Shirley Bassey. Amazing vocalist very dramatic though and her sound very outdated. Also While Whitney IS amazing most of her sound is solely due to her technic thats why its easier for people with close enough voices to be able to mimic her, there are many singers that can do her,same goes for Celine Dion,Britney Spears,Shakira,jessy J,Arianna,Xtina even patti labelle and aretha etc. Contrary Noone yet is able to mimic/impersonate/duplicate the chest belt of Mariah, because its one of the most unique voices and the amount of musicality that she has as an artist makes it even harder, yes ofc many can mimic her whispery technical tone and faltsetos and even whistle to some extent and her hand menarisms but girl noone could ever come close to her chest/belt tone/colour. and that is true for every kind of Mariah era we speak cause Mariah's Tone changes alot at each era cause of some rare chronic hormone issue she has,that can shift the tone of voice a bit. Anyways people can notice better and be impressed more from the power of a voice and from the energy of a performance that's why Whitney will be always be considered the better of the trinity,although Mariah will be always The better overall artist that still people will analyse her voice and music for many years to come. You can already notice that most vocal trainers and singers and youtube creators that talks/reacts to vocals by Mariah. Even at music colleges talk and analyze the voice of Mariah (and no,no about her ability to whistle). If only Mariah could lose her insecurities that hold her back and have just half the confidence of Whitney/Xtina/Aretha and the brains of Celine, she would be the Best of the Best period. (at least at her peak). As of it is now the more pleasant to see and hear and be impressed by,specially general public is by far Whitney,thats why she will be always"The Voice"! phewww veeeery long text wall here... sorry!! And as always great Video and analysis.. Want to see more from whitney ofc cause i Love her as I love Mariah! btw Whitney is somewhat lyrical/opera trained and yes she is using parts of that style to her technic alot.

      Wow! Thank you for taking the time to leave this. You shared some things I didn't know. Whitney is really the golden standard for many as you say, so much strength, beautiful clear tone, flawless agility. What you share about the record label making her rerecord the first album is super interesting! Sad they have so much control over their artists and the way they sing/express themselves, but I guess that's reality. I'm glad you enjoyed this, gonna check out some of the things you recommend. I also love her as I love Mariah!!!

      When you mentioned MC's chest belts, I immediately get drawn to her MSG performance of "Make it happen" or even her Unplugged performance of the same song. Simply mesmerizing.
      Would agree more singers can mimic Whitney, or say an Xtina, even Celine for that matter, but there are some minimum requirements to do so.
      Power for one comes to mind. Many have tried Whitney, and have failed spectacularly. There is one Philippina that did a Whitney Medley to kill all Whitney Medleys though. And that is no mean feat, considering the shear volume of Whitney Medleys out there.
      Something tells me, you know exactly who I am referring to.
      Let me know if I'm correct in my assumption 😉

    • @sodade21
      @sodade21 Год назад +2

      @@FishFinga17 Oh that is hard cause most of Philippinas are amazing singers! I Must say you might referring to Katrina Velarde! She was amazing but she sung it as Katrina not trying to immitate Whitney (ofc she nailed it). I really loved also Morrisette Amon's Medley and I love Morrisette anyways! and I remember Charice also doing amazing covers of Whitney specially loved the "one moment in time" she did it even more powerful,higher key and higher placement overall,it was magic. what i was talking though on my previous post was about people that are able to mimic Whitney almost exactly even if they have not that much of power,tone wise. one that comes in mind that for me is closer to whitney than anyone is Belinda Davids! check her at the Apollo Theatre performance. Even Whitney could not tell the difference its like 98% like whitney minus the power. one other singer that is really good at whitney specially at her earlier days is Glennis Grace,nowdays she has found more of her personal sound,like Katrine but still resemble a bit of Whitney. 😅

      Im sorry but mentioning mariah on a Whitney vid is so typical of lambs…. Nobody and nobody ever will mimic Whitney…..those singers try to copy her tone their not copying her voice in general. Its so weird how obsessed yall lambs are with Whitney…. atp yall should be the nippians and then u mention Whitneys run and riffs as if mariahs is better. Sorry We listen to controlled runs and riffs not them extra as runs singers nowadays think is necessary to prove u can sing😂. Let me know when mariah can do the impossible medley and be considered the goat by the outside world and not just her fans. Because everybody knows Whitneys the goat deal with itt😘.

She really is the Queen of Voice. it was actually aretha franklin that changed the singing styles of popular music. aretha brought in the gospel styles of the baptist church that shifted the tessitura in popular music, encouraging singers to explore dynamic mid-to-upper ranges. the vocal trinity, rock stars, country singers, and even opera singers had cited aretha as a source of vocal inspiration.

    Have you thought about playing the entire performance and then going back over it so your listeners can understand the vocal techniques you wish to explain? Regarding the "trinity" business, there was Houston, then everyone else. If you want to be blown away, why not review "A Quiet Place." That one performance with just a splash of piano and organ is evidence of her being one of the greatest singers in any genre ever.

    1:30 don’t mind the Celine stans 😂😂😂 Celine is one of the best singers yes, but she certainly did not inspire singers to the level that Mariah and Whitney did, and they’re delusional if they think that. Celine herself copied and was inspired by Whitney’s vocals, came from her own mouth herself several times. It’s just the truth! You were right. 🤷‍♂️
