How to Clean Boxing Gloves (Eliminate Stinky Odor)

  • Опубликовано: 11 авг 2018
  • The enemy of boxing gloves is moisture (sweat), which leads to the growth of mold & mildew. Obviously you're going to sweat when you train, but the problem occurs when you leave your sweaty gloves in your gym bag overnight. The bacteria will feed on your sweat and produce Bromidrosis, which gives off that stinky, body-odor smell. To avoid this, be sure to dry your gloves after each use and leave them to dry in a well-ventilated area. Additionally, you can use dryer sheets, essential oils, or unused tea bags to reduce any bad odors coming from your gloves.

    I personally like to use a boot dryer to keep my gloves dry. I spray the inside of the gloves with lysol and then pop them on the boot dryer and the bacteria never gets a chance to smell up the gloves because they dry so quickly. You can find boot dryers for around 20-40 bucks and they work wonders on boxing gloves. I’ve had the same pair for a year and a half now when I used to run through gloves ever couple of months. Highly recommend.

    I managed to make my now 1 year old gloves last WAY longer by buying anti-moisture packets that I put in everyday after training. After the first set lost it's power, I added another one. I'm currently on 3 per glove. Still does the trick. AND mixed with window breathing post-workout too. My main issue is my gloves breaking apart from heavy bag work. Duct tape is saving that one... for now.

  • @Nick051967
    @Nick051967 6 лет назад +4

    I’m living in a tropical climate and am super sweaty, so trying to dry out the inside of the glove is key - to limit bacteria growth. I’ve been using old newspaper scrunched up inside the glove for a few hours / overnight - and sometimes supplementing this with an hour or two in a shaded spot outside (paper removed) - direct sunlight will crack the leather. Touch wood - this has kept two pairs of gloves stink free after months of regular use. Also I don’t recycle wraps that haven’t been washed. Plus I’ve been soaking all clothing including wraps in a bucket of water with a cup of white vinegar (you can get cheap synthetic vinegar in most supermarkets) for a couple of hours before going in the washing machine. This keeps good quality “technical” fabrics from getting funky.

They completely stink and now we're trying to find a way to give them a thorough cleaning. Most of them are like plastic/vynil gloves. I was wondering if soaking them in salt water or cleaning them with vinegar mixed with water would be a good way of cleaning them. I even thought of putting some talcum powder inside of them or sprinkling them with alcohol or essential oils. Any thoughts?

      Damn that sucks. I got Cleto Reyes gloves a year ago and they don't smell at all, in fact they still smell a little new (that reyes leather smell). I don't even whip down the gloves after use, just throw them into a corner with velcro open.
      I'd assume it's the quality of the gloves too because I had some 20$ ringside gloves that smelled after 3 months after using it (threw them out cause the stuffing was coming out). Also my shin pads smell pretty bad too, but since nobody's smelling my legs no harm done. So it could be the quality, assuming you're doing the basics (not leaving it in gym bag, wiping it down after use, drying) which to be honest is common sense.

    I occasionally put baking soda in them, shake them up a bit and let them sit over night or for a few days with the open part on top
    Then I shake the baking soda out and clean with a damp soapy towel
    I use baby wipes for regular cleaning

    I'm trying to get into the habit of using the gyms blowdryer/hairdryer or even the electric hand dryers to get dry them out a bit more (after using a towel). Then I'll leave a dryer sheet in each glove

    I'm personally a fan of baby powder in a paper towel and fold it so it doesn't fall out and use your hand to stuff it deep into the glove long fold style. Absorbs moisture and keeps it smelling good. Gold bond foot powder works too
