  • When I say this trip to this tiny island off the coast of Belize changed my life, Im not lying! I booked this 3-week marine conservation trip as a gift to myself to celebrate finishing grad school.
We stayed on a tiny island called Tom Owen's Caye, where we got not a single second of cell phone reception, and spent the entire time in a cycle of eat, dive, sleep, repeat. It was a fabulous few weeks, I met so many amazing people, ate incredible food, and started to perfect my skills in a hobby I loved.
The marine conservation part of this trip was extracting invasive species. Lion fish are invasive in the Caribbean, meaning that they do not have a natural predator. Because of this, they multiply like CRAZY and are killing many of the reef fish at an alarming rate. For that reason, there are many companies that focus primarily on spearing lion fish to try to keep their numbers at bay. Lion fish are venomous, not poisonous, which means we are safe to eat them! So each lion fish we speared we took back to the island to filet and eat for dinner.
Our free time on the island was spent napping, playing volleyball, learning to slack-line, reading, playing games, etc. It was a much needed trip to be able to unplug from real life and have some peace and quiet.
While I was in Belize, I realized I no longer wanted scuba diving to be simply a hobby, I wanted it to be a part of my every day life! This was quite an overwhelming realization as I had literally just graduated with a degree that took me 8 years to obtain, and then I basically decided to push that to the side to go live a wild dream.
Everything seemed to fall into place for me to take the next steps to be able to pursue this dream to travel the world as a scuba instructor. I am confident that if I did not take this trip to Belize, I would not be here in Thailand working as a scuba instructor. I am so happy that I listened to that voice inside my head that told me to go on that trip, it has really taught me to always trust my gut!
