Thank you very much Steve!!! I have a 2021 GMC Canyon, it started doing this about 2 months ago, and progressively got worse. I was stuck trying to pick up some stuff for the wife at the grocery store, tried 15-20 times, Ignition on, off....nothing, key wouldn't come out. Drove home and luckily the key came out. Found your video, and after 15 minutes, problem solved! I called the GMC dealership and the Service manager knew immediately what I was talking about. He said it's about $600 to replace the solenoid. I asked him why hasn't there been a recall, since it's going back years.....he had no answer, LOL. I won't be changing the solenoid......thanks again Bud! Subscribed!!
haha, just trying to get the word out one disabled safety feature at a time. Glad it saved you from trading the truck, they are awesome little rigs with a few little wrinkles. If you live in the north I would advise you take a peak at your oil cooler lines next time you are under the truck. They plug in at the bottom of your Rad and are notorious for rusting. Mine are ready to pop and will be replacing shortly.
Thanks Steve. Appreciate your candor and you emphasizing the the safety aspect. Have a 2019 Chevy Colorado. This should not happen with a vehicle which is only 2 years old. This is a big deterrant from considering any GMC product for my next purchase. Agree with Jeff Smith below. Chevy should recall this especially if they want to keep their current customers.
You gotta know the rules before you break em. Don’t want to put anybody unknowingly in harms way. It is a pretty piss poor design that should be recalled. GM being who they are won’t do anything until there id a class action lawsuit.
Fix for stuck key Hubs says do not unplug the solenoid. Solenoid plunger is probably stuck with lithium grease. Check to see if there is a big glob there. Clean with WD40 to remove the excess grease from the plunger. He has a 2017 Chevy Colorado, and this is what he did to fix his. It’s working fine ever since.
Interesting. Admittedly not unplugging the solenoid would be safer. I never bothered to pull apart the centre console but I I might rip it apart and see if there was anything causing it to stick and lock the key in. Thanks for the tip!
Couple screws to take the column apart and unplug the safety switch and you will never have to worry about it again. You just need to be aware that key can be shut off and removed at any time.
@@jay1398 if you do what I outlined in this video you will be able to turn the truck off and remove the key under any condition. Park, neutral, driving at 120km/h (not recommended). The steering column will lock and you will crash. My advice, don’t shut the truck off while driving. Imagine it’s manual.
Haha, yeah there is lots of little dumb crap no doubt. Honestly even though there is stupid little stuff I still prefer this over my taco. It is a better a towing, hauling, nicer interior and better on gas.
im having this same issue with my chevy colorado 2016 but now got worst. 2 day ago the key got stuck for real, i got so frustrated. i left the key there with all the door unlock (i park on the street where i live) hopping somebody will steal the truck, call the insurance and get rib of this freaking problem AND MORE OTHER PROBLEMS IM HAVING WITH THE TRUCK, but bad luck for me.... the truck was till there after 2 days with the key on and doors unlock so now i guess i will do what u did on the video and see what happens. today i left the key on again but i went back couple hours later and the key came out right away so i don't get it. when i go to work the key doesn't get stuck but when i go back home its impossible to take the key out.
HellThrash it is a pain in the ass when it won’t come out for sure. Before I disabled the key lock I had success with clicking the park button on the front of the shifter. Disabling it is the only thing I have found that will not cost an arm and a leg and will ensure it doesn’t happen again. Good luck!

You are a hero. I've researched this and struggled with my key getting stuck in the switch for over a year... You saved me from trading for a Ford. 🤣

Why can't Chevy have a recall on this problem.Paid a lot of money for this truck????
The second it’s out of Bumper to Bumper warranty you might as well have bought another brand of car for all they care.
You need to add chain lubricant to fix that problem
I sprayed some bicycle chain lube into the opening where you insert the key and it fixed the problem immediately

What I’ve been doing on mine is to unplug the battery. Once the battery is unplugged the key releases without a problem

I will try that this summer. It’s too damn cold here now to be taking plastic apart. By chain lube do you mean lithium grease?
