My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.
Michael, I'm a restorer, have been doing it for 25+ years. I'd be happy to repair it for you. Let me know.
What a nice offer.
That so sweet of you.
That is so kind!
Dear E Miller --- Yes, let's do this .. you're a team player !
Oh, how wonderful!!
A rubber gasket between the wood and faucet tube would be a good idea to prevent water drippage.
glue the plate with Gold, it's a Japanese technique I think. looks really nice
japanese words sound much nicer when you're not just reading it as gold stickage, but yeah mate if you break something precious its probably worth it to order a lil kit and glue it together and apply the gold stuff on top, make it part of its charm y'know, prove to the world that someone loved it enough to fix it
Wabi Sabi....
Kintsugi, the art of repairing with gold. Just wanted to advise Michael that.
Great idea. I've seen plates fixed with this method and they are stunning.
B. Alex EXCELLENT idea.
It’s quite a clean break, if you contact Spode they may have conservators who can restore it for you.
There is no Spode in Stoke these days. All are made in far east. So no conseservators.
As a plumber I would advise you to remove your taps and seal the holes you drilled in the oak top . When you refit the taps put some sort of sealant under the tap to prevent water getting down the hole . Seal the wood then seal the tap in place . Water is very hard to control ask any boat owner . Love your show , keep up the good work .
Great idea.
Yeah, I died inside a little bit when he didn't use pipe tape. I am going to pretend that he did it off camera so that I can sleep tonight.
I'm so glad you mentioned it! I was thinking the same thing! As well as some kind of sealant between the wood counter top and the sink.
@@AuntBecky1 Yes, that’s what I was thinking. He needs to redo the connections and put some plumbers tape around pipe fittings.
@@thirdeyeview1111 I am sure he did that all off camera. I am sure to spare us a lot of cursing when he tries to figure out which way it has to wrap. Wrapping pipe tape is a bit like plugging in a USB plug. You get it wrong 150% of the time.
Michael, your cottage looks so homey and comforting when the yellow glow of the lights shining through the windows lighting the darkness outside. Makes me want to crawl into a couch with a good book, a warm cup of tea and a fluffy soft blanket and read before going to bed dreaming of English gardens. Oh, I live in the USA, a beautiful place in far Northern Idaho just 35 miles from the Canadian Border.
That morning view with the gold color is so beautiful
The best thing to do with your AGA tool is to place a hook just for it as close to the AGA as you can while having it out of the way, possibly in one of your triangular voids to the rear sides of your cooker. I learned to install a hook under my sink for my tool I use to remove faucet housings when I had to replace my tool every time.
So happy to see some of the original rock wall left exposed. The puppies sharing a bed and their wee snores are adorable.
Your photos at time stamp 4:23 and beyond are absolutely stunning. I can imagine your water colors with these photos. To die for. I wish I could have you teach me how to use water colors. I do several forms of art work and sold many. I did 3-dimentional paper tole, ink, pencil drawings, and my favorite medium is colored pencil. I also do some acrylic paints but I'm really wanting someone to teach how to do water color. I love your art work and some day I'll buy one of your floral / scenery ones.
I learn so much listening to Michael explain what he’s doing, products he uses and why he chose them, etc. Who knew the importance of applying a finish to both sides of a piece of wood!
Michael make a mosaic out of your special plate and frame it!!! So very sorry that happened. Have had a few of my favorite antiques go by the way with breakage. Devastating and a heart breaker!!! Toodles to the best Channel EVER!!!
Michael, I believe you may not realize the effect the beautiful and sensitive videos around the chateau’s property have on your viewers! With an artist’s eye your videos inspire a sense of peace that is precious. Thank you Michael.
The mornings and MAGICAL!!!
STUNNING!!!
That wrench joke was hilarious 😁😂😂😂😂
And isn’t it Polyx to more or less rhyme with other parts of a man’s anatomy?
If you have access to the Alister Sim Christmas Carol in restored high definition you might see the dinner scene when the bottom of one of the plates shows the metal staples used to mend it which was common because ceramics where so expensive for certain people and I guess there had yet to be a glue developed that would not come undone in water.
You should get in touch with the BBC's "The Repair Shop " ceramics expert. I'm sure that she could repair the damaged plate.
My wife and I thought exactly the same! We are sure that Kirsten Ramsay from the Repair Shop would be able to do an invisible repair.
I thought the same thing!!
Spectacular. And such a kind disposition. I’m a big fan.
I love that show!!! Yes!
Yes they do perform miracles !
That golden sunlight touching the frost makes all seem right in the world. Thank you Michael ...
I like the fact you show that jobs take longer than expected ! Having to rush off to buy a tool to enable you to fit the taps, and then spending more money on things you happen to find in the DIY shop! That is real life. On the slick chateau channels, everything always happens easily , everything fits first time, and there are never any problems. What you are showing is much better. Keep it real! You are doing great!
That sunrise sequence was breathtaking, Michael.
it really was. I think I'd awake at dawn everyday so as not to miss something as spectacular as that!
He is a talented photographer. He seems driven to do everything perfect. Good guy.
Hi, I've got one I can send you a Willow Santa Plate. I've sent you a message in Patreon. Neil
How kind of you
Neil that is so very kind and thoughtful of you 💕what a lovely kind man you are 😘
No way!!!!
That is a lovely thing to do.🥰
Neil you are a treasure!
You do a smashing job putting the perfect music to the video. The Petheric's are a very talented family.
Thank you for putting out a new video. I look forward to your next one. Please say an extra prayer for America we need all the prayers we can get right now. 💙🇬🇧🇺🇸
Praying in Michigan!
Thoughts and prayers.
And that’s why plumbers are so well-paid! The cottage is beautiful. It looks so warm and inviting from the outside at night.
Lovely evening scene of the sweet gardeners cottage. Through the twilight you see the warm glow from the windows and smoke coming from the stove, you just know inside the cottage is warm and welcoming. What a lovely sight to see. Much happiness in your gardeners cottage.
Ryan…good to have you back!
Who else was expecting Mr Darcy to appear during the morning/dawn recording he did?
Wait...did I miss it? Where was Mr.Darcy....
@@elainekorvemaker814 😆
@@elainekorvemaker814 Should have showed up 😋, the recording really gave a P&p vibe, if you saw the 2005 movie you know what I'm referring to.
A wall mounted oak plate cabinet with glass doors would be lovely way to safely display 😊❤️
I was thinking he could add a plate rail to the top of the paneling.
@@robert3302 I think that was discussed, might be in the plan. He will need lots of space for gifts!
OMG😭 THE MORNING THERE IS SUPER BEAUTIFUL!
Is there nothing you can't do Michael? How clever you are and handsome and patient and kind...and no matter who in your family has a vlog, even if it is the dog...yours are the best!
I love that little Titi is comfortable snoring makes your home feel homie and lived in ...
The puppy was probably growling at Ryan. LOL
That was the most incredible Morning photography of the estate. Just Wow! You have a gift of talent behind the lens.
Love the puppy bed next to the warm oven.
Sorry to hear about your special Christmas spoke plate. Quite unfortunate. I pray you can find another one.
Stunning early morning photography of the Chateaux Michael.
Micnael:
You have an enormous gift to have a father who can do! My father, God rest his soul, who could do these tasks and always knew what he needed to do.
Cheers
Oh Michael, with the broken peice please think about doing a mosaic : a mirror, or around a clay pot - repurpose and make it beautiful.. or create Kintsugi - japanese term for mending broken with gold joinery. :) thank you ..
Michael,my husband and I love your renovations. ❤️❤️
Beautiful photographic introduction shows your artisric talent . Absolutely lovely . As well as being gorgeous the cttage is extremely cosy ............and TT's snoring proves how comfortable your cottage is . Be well , stay safe and prosper .
Your new home is a credit to you, your dad and Shawn congratulations
Don't ever stop making your videos...You and Stephanie are the best thing on television these days...and I have over a 1000 channels!!! lol
Wow the cottage is coming along nicely. Good to see Ryan there helping out. You guys are so fun to watch and listen to. Thanks fir the entertainment! Mary
Photography of the frosty is so beautiful.
I remember the first time you showed us the cottage. It was a mess with the walls crumbling and totally neglected. You said you eventually wanted to fix it up and live there. I couldn't even picture it and thought you were crazy. Then the "go fund me" money came in and you actually got started on it. Now it is stunning. Lots yet to do but what an inviting space, filled with your treasures. Each item full of history. Michael, it is really a masterpiece. Thank you for taking us all on this amazing journey. May this year bring you much joy in your little home.
Love your 'can do' attitude and attention to detail like a true artisan 🏰🌲 Also the visual imagery showing the beauty of Nature surrounding you. Thanks for sharing Michael 🦘🌴
Michael you and Stephanie are such lovely people. Watching you living such fulfilling lives is inspiring. Stay happy and safe❤️❤️❤️
Your cottage is awesome. Love it. Please can we see the rest of it.
The charm of your cottage has me spellbound! I so appreciate your vision, your amazing variety of skills to bring that vision to life and your willingness to take us all along in the journey! Blessings on you and your family!!
Hello Michael, the cottage is coming along nicely. Love your cute puppies all curled up together in the basket. Great seeing Ryan. Take Care . PS sorry about your beautiful plate, hope you are able to find another one.
The first time you used the osmo product I stopped the video and turned around my screen enlarged as much as I could to figure out what was written on the can. I trusted that if you were using it in the chateau I could use it in my cottage. I ordered it from what seems to be the unique importer in the States and it did not disappoint. It is absolutely beautiful. I got another can and the maintenance products since Osmo is not available any more in the States. The company seems to have been sold and the former owner is now producing a similar product under another brand name "Saicos" which is readily available in the States.
You need to add some plumbers putty around the base of the faucets to keep water from getting in and eventually rotting the wood or leaking down the water hose.
I did varnish the insides of the holes before the taps went on, although some uninteresting stuff like that gets edited out to keep the video moving.
You are such a breath of fresh air, very down to earth and a warm personality. Your parents did a lovely job. Oh and I love the dogs and kitchen
@@Chateauwalls , then why are you here? Go away, troll.
What you see in others is a reflection of what you are yourself.
Hope you find inner peace, it makes life so much more beautiful
Love the cabinets and counters. The sink looks fantastic! Love the taps. Great job 👏
The cabinets and work tops are gorgeous! What a beautiful kitchen.
The breaks on the plate look very precise. You could certainly get it repaired. They can perform miracles these days. Some time ago one of the London museums had a catastrophe, an idiot pushed an ancient urn off a balustrade and they were able to fix it, not even a crack showing. For something that matters so much to you, a repair is worth thinking about. Even if it is not secure enough to use again, you could keep it for show and have another one to use.
Thank you for the video. I hope that after this disaster you have a fabulous day!
Before you turn the water on, I'd recommend PTFE tape on the tap threads and sealant between the o ring of the plug hole and sink - I learned the hard way and plumber told me to do that after...
I would also recommend a bead of silicon sealant between the counter and the sink.
i can't believe you said 70's Swedish something or other, and then Ryan was like "what are you doing there, Michael.." and you sounded like the baggins guy contemplating a ring in a vest pocket... 😜😄
Ooh the doggies are soooooo cute!!
In the US, Spode Christmas plates are popular but they are not blue and white. They are off-white with a decorated Christmas Tree on the front with green trim on the edges.
wow the sunlight on the chateau and the surroundings looks so beautiful 😍
Sorry about your broken plate. I betting with all your subscribers you will have another one in no time. Pups are adorable. Your cottage is going to be so comfortable and warm when done. I bet you can't wait to sleep there.
Hi Michael 💋 i am now officially one of your patreons...all the best looking forward to a fabulous ride ty🥰
Glue it back together and just keep it
I guess cooking with the auger is something to get use to but having grown up with summer holidays in the state of New Mexico with my cattle ranching grandparents they had a wood burning stove for cooking with an adjacent compartment for heating water. This was back in the 1960s. At that time the apple orchard had progressed beyond being productive so they had this immense pile of downed trees that us kids were responsible for cutting into stove burning size. My grandmother would use bark to get the fire started without any liquid burner starter. She even backed in it. Hope you enjoy your auger.
Make a square box frame, cover the interior with white linen and affix the pieces to the backing. You can join them or perhaps better separate them slightly showing the breaks. Put behind glass and write the story on the back. Hang it on the wall in the kitchen. A conversation piece. Sadly, things break. After my 9 month old pulled a table cloth with all my creamware service I cried then accepted and realized....things break. Glad you were not injured. ❤️
the nicest photo shot of the day...would love one for a nice card front...the cottage evening...the lights of home. Sweet and congratulations!
You remind me of a little girl playing house as you pretend-fill your tea kettle. I remember the play and pride of my first home of my own. I know you’re going to have many years of happiness in that snug little cottage.
Get a tripod Michael, whack it in a corner and film everything and just a little close up now and then? (What do I know, I have no idea LOL)
Laura from Garden Answer....Sean from Sean James Cameron (Wales) both do this both utuber's
Michael - the cinematography of you vlog is amazing. Your first shot of the, "Next Morning" scene was amazing. Are you shooting those? Whomever is doing you landscape/pan shots is doing an amazing job. Sorry about your Spode plate. Glad to hear you're coming back to weekly vlogs.
Happy New Year to all of you !!! ... May 2021 make us forget the past year's hardships ... Bless you all !
The cottage looked so cosy from outside with the lights on and the Christmas tree in the window. I bet you are so eager to get it finished so you can move in... Xx
Hi Michael.
I thought all those bags of Aga fuel were pellets, I did not realize that they were coal. When we had Agas and such in Australia when I was young we only used wood as a fuel..
Luv Ya work.
David Down Under.
I wish I was restoring the buildings on a French chateau rather than living through this mess in the USA
Itd distressing
💯
Word bro 🙌
Save all the pieces and kintsugi it. It makes the break part of the history of the object and makes it even more precious. It's a beautiful way of seeing the world.
just promise that you'll do kintsuki or something to restore the broken plate, and display it somewhere if you dont plan on using it, make it less sad. then some day someone will find a lovingly repaired rare spode plate and its story wont be over
I was going to suggest you glue the plate - what the heck, nothing to lose? Try it before actually throwing it away and until you acquire another one. Then I saw the comments about Kintsugi and Googled it. I really LOVE this technique! I have saved some broken ceramic and porcelain pieces I just couldn't bear to throw out. Now I have a new idea for something to do with them! Yay!
I have missed seeing the two of you together. Do it more often!
I was so excited to see your coal bucket. I have one just like it, we got it in UK back in the 50's. Actually got alot of copper pieces my mom picked up. Need to return the pots & pans though $$.
Your grandmother has the right ideal. Love the counter top and faucets.
Love you all,. Enjoy so much.
My favorite ❤️😍.
Love your whole family friends.xxx
Love these ‘Doing...’ videos. Fun to see Ryan too. Thank you 🦘🦘
Michael you could change your door around so it opens out, or toward the wall the sink is on . Just a thought
Wow! That morning footage! The sunrise and the frost, it was all so beautiful and magical. Oh my!♥️
What a beautiful scenery 😍👌
Amazing, Michael! You, your family and friends have worked so hard and the cottage is really taking shape. Bravo! I cannot wait until it is all finished and you can finally live in it full-time 💕
Michael, go on replacements.com. They show the plate that just broke is out of stock but you can ask them to email you when they are back in stock.
I think it's interesting how the door to the cottage opens into the space rather than simply out of the way, against the wall.
Yes it’s very unusual. It will be changed at a later date to open the other way or even outwards into a small porch. We will have to see later on.
Love the commentating from you Brother Michael.
I moved from NZ to Australia and broke a precious costly ornament and a clay based wall tile 1 of 3. I found a local professional restorer and the repair is completely invisible, both sides. If you can’t find a replacement I really recommend carrying out repair with a professional. Wrap up those pieces (individually) until you know you have a new one or not. Having seen how good a repair can be I would consider buying something broken and getting it repaired if it was rare.
Every Friday yippee. I have seen the trailer and I’ll be watching. Thanks!!!!!
Looks beautiful and the bit of stone wall that you left exposed is perfect!
Merci Michael for bringning back your schedule for videos.. I miss them and all your reno. Merci Michael de reprendre votre horaire pour les vidéos, Ils me manquent terriblement.
They call them farm sinks here in the US.
Definitely on my wish list to get one!
Just catching up.Satinado Finish and colour are beautiful on the wood,i had all Franke white goods in my Kitchen here in Spain, sadly after 18 years some have died,Your Cottage is going to be so cosy and homely, well done.
The Oak is just stunning!!!!! Great job getting it all together!!
Ok Michael, putting that sink was like me doing crafts and a glue gun.
The cottage at nite looks so warm and cozy and lived in! Such a beautiful glow! 👌🏼
Michael’s such a great handyman....an great sweet man in general!
I think setting a tripod would help! Plus, it would lower the risk of getting motion sickness from watching 😂😋 If I were close by I would volunteer to film for you. So glad the cottage is coming together! Love the shot of the amber light through the window in the blue hour.
Well, I'm ready for the Titi and Bertie Channel. Lovely episode, Michael, particularly the outdoor shots.
Michael you might want to add some Teflon tape on your tap connections. The washers never work like they should. It will save you a flood when you turn on the water.
Lol, I love Ryan's mini promo!
