Well said about hazelnuts, peanuts are not actual nuts and have little food value, yes they eat them, I eat MacDonalds but to many are bad, monkey/peanut nuts should only be only be used occasionally, they are not a natural food source for native reds, yes I use some but mainly, hazelnuts some shelled some unshelled, sweet chestnuts, various seeds sunflower, sunflower hearts and walnuts shelled and unshelled. They go mad for shelled walnuts and stay in place to eat them also the walnut is a natural red food source, almonds, but all as a variety of food, Im lucky to live in Cumbria where we are very protective about our Reds. DONTfeed them horse chestnuts they are toxic, love the video
Hi, Many thanks for your comment, which provides some great advice and information for others to read. I pinned this comment to the top so hopefully, people will not keep taking the wrong nuts up to the squirrels. Yeh its a bit of a drive up there for me but do enjoy going up to see them, I also go over to Yorkshire there is a nice little place over there I know as well, perfect for taking photos in the snow. Anyway, thanks for your comment and have a great Christmas. 🎄
Another great video Ashley. Bumped into you at the squirrels on the 27th. Me and my daughter were chasing the female pheasants away from the nuts by the river. I have seen pheasants there before but only 1 or 2, not the 10+ that were around on the 27th. Must get up into the woods next time
Hi Steven many thanks for the comment yeah there are lots of pheasants up in the woods and around the river at the moment not sure why whether they are breeding them or not I don't know. But yes, great to meet you, and take care and I will probably bump into you again one day 👍
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family, Ash. Thanks for all the work you have put into these great videos over the last year, and here's to a brilliant 2025 ! 👏👏👏

Hi Andy, many thanks for your comment yep you can't beat a red squirrel that's for sure, but still all the best, thanks for your continued support and have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.👍

All the very best Ashley for Christmas and the New Year. Thanks for all the effort and time you've put in. Need to visit this location in the New Year.
Pheasants are a pain eating my seeds, well said about light as well woods and forests are not light places and as you say you deal with the cards you draw, i find some of my red squirrel pic look better when light is going, like you Im regularly out with reds and lucky to say they come quite close, each one with its own personality, Im out most days, taking their pics, but also it allows me to keep an eye on their health and report and have removed any greys
Hi Andi many thanks for your comment, great to hear that you're up there a lot taking their photos and keeping an eye on the health, always good to have people looking out for the wildlife, yeah and the Pheasant just became a bit of a nuisance by the afternoon so we decided to leave it and stop feeding the pheasants, as I don't want to encourage them, there's already a lot there and numbers could increase and have an impact on the red squirrels perhaps. Have a great Christmas and thanks for watching 🎄
If you at Hawes, please read the guidance before you go. Important note: Please don't feed the squirrels. Watch the squirrels from the path only and don't put food out to attract them or try to feed them by hand as it is important that they don't get used to human contact.
