This is one of my all time favorite cakes!!! The combination of cherries and chocolate is to die for. And she really cracked me up with the comment about cutting the cake in half... hey nothing wrong with a two layer cake.

I'm actually living in the Black Forest in Germany and this cake doesn't look like a Black Forest cake ;) But I know it's your version of it. Anyway it looks delicious :)
I thought that as well. In Germany that would not be acceptable XD but I personally like Laura's version. Though if I would make a Black Forest Cake myself, I would go with a different recipe. Especially because the cherries are not cooked into this kind of jelly compote that should be the first filling...

Hi Laura! I'm so so happy you finally showed a German recipe! And your cake looks amazing. Making it with sour cherries is actually the traditional way. Traditionally you would also cover the sides of the cake with whipped cream. But I love your idea of using instant coffee powder! Have to try that the next time I make this cake. I remember growing up that my Oma would make this for my brother and I. She's from Germany so she would make that version of this cake, she even has an old, I guess, tapestry that hangs in our kitchen. This brought back good, yummy memories of baking with my Oma. :)

I don't mind watching your videos even if they are an hour long but when I think of passing this recipe to someone or coming back to it after, it is not as convenient or efficient because of all the jokes and comments (keep those for the vlogs).. I think your videos are nice because Joe helps you keep them short and simple. Love yoou and all the recipes :)
I like how you decorated it! The cream rosettes look fabulous. I once made a "black forest cake" with pineapple pieces instead of cherries, and it was very delicious too!

I'm sorry to say that, but this is nowhere near a real "Black Forest Cake". First thing is your cake mix. A real Black Forest Cake is made with a dough which contains zero fat. Meaning no butter, milk or egg yolk. The dough you want to prepare for this is almost like an Angel Food Cake: you use beaten eggwhites for it. Next part is the cherry syrup you prepared. What actually needs to go in there is a sort of cherry jam cooked with starch. You take the juice directly from your jar of cherries and the cherries themselves with some sugar and starch and heat it until it all thickens up. This is your filling for the cake, which should have 3 thin layers. Not two super fat chunks of cake. On the bottom one, you add the cherry filling and some whipped cream, the others need to be filled with whipped cream only. Don't dump all the cherries on top. On top, there's whipped cream and (candied) cherries to garnish (maybe some dark grated chocolate also). Also, you need to frost the cake not only on top, but also on it's sides and then cover them all over in dark grated chocolate. Please excuse my English, it's not my first language.

I hate to say it but I often click other channel's cooking videos instead of yours. I feel like the videos are becoming longer, not because of the recipe, but because there's way too much unnecessary talking going on. It would be a lot more enjoyable for me if you stayed on topic the whole time instead of veering off so often.

Laura, that's a beautiful cake! I have to ask though if you've ever made a spumoni cake. The cake part is 2 layers of chocolate cake, that a split in two, so you end up with 4 layers, then you make a base frosting that is divided into 4 bowls. To frost it, it's similar to the black forest cake, in that each layer is frosted only on the top of each layer. After you have divided the frosting, you flavor & tint each portion. You end up with a chocolate frosting, a cherry frosting, a peppermint frosting & the last one is a yellow frosting, but I just don't remember what the flavor is on that one. It ends up being a really beautiful cake. I made it for Christmas dinner this past year & I was just finishing the frosting when my youngest son & his family arrived. My grandson, Nolan came over to watch & he asked me what kind of cake it was. He said, "Grammy you're the best baker in the whole world". It's moments like that, that you know your family appreciates all the time & Love that go into your cooking.
