Secrecy and insular, restrictive tenants that threatens punishment if you attempt to leave, let alone reveal the secrets of the cult, such as scientology and its weaponization of the legal system. Christianity almost certainly has sects that are cults for sure, but it clasifies more as a religion because their tenants are generally very well known (so the secrecy aspect isn't an issue) and mostly don't threaten their members if they want to leave. Mind, parents can be a major exception, but that is as much a display of bad parenting as it is purely occult behavior. For it to be cult behavior the organization itself has to be in on it and actively involved in the threats, rather than merely parents being psycho or excessive peer pressure.

It's all about sunk-cost with cults. They find vulnerable people and lull them into the belief that the cult can solve every woe the person has in their life, as long as they joing and help the cult. It may start in the small gestures, doing small favours or even small paid amounts, but it slowly increases and becomes more and more demanding. At some point, the person will be so deep into the cult that they have given them their entire life. And from then on they are lost.

Right, so just to clarify; the term cult has evolved over the years. Originally it referred to non-mainstream religious practices. Small local variants or specific churches were often referred to as cults if they handled things that the average person had little to deal with. Basically if you went to a temple once a week to get a blessing for luck that wasn't a cult. If you went once or twice in your life for momentous occassions, or if only a limited segment of the people went to it, that was a cult. In the 1900s it became more associated with individual leaders and very strong devotion.

We know the OT documents because of one guy that Scientology tried to sue over his NDA and leaving the organization. In retalition for bringing the lawsuit, he submitted _all_ of the OT documents as evidence.
This screwed them royally. If they denied the documents were legit, then they would lose the lawsuit and commit perjury since his NDA didn't cover fake documents. If they amitted the documents were genuine, they win the lawsuit, but commit their OT documents (worth literally _Millions_ to access) to the Public Record.
And that's why we know, for example, that the OT-VIII document calls Jesus a Pee-3D0.
IIRC, Operation Clambake still has the original court documents available somewhere.

My only criticism of Trapped in the Closet is it made Scientology into a joke but in fact it's dangerous, they've tortured people, killed people, driven some to suicide, abused kids and destroyed lives. I know that's hard to fit in but I think until series like Leah Remini's Scientology the Aftermath they got away with more because no one took them seriously. The episode is brilliant and it really helped get the ball rolling against the cult and probably stopped people joining but it made people dismissive of Scientology when anger and outrage are what we really need to take them down. They're still huge, rich and powerful. They need to be stopped.
On Mormons, there are Mormon cults - usually an evil old man and 20 wives who he groomed from childhood plus their extended families.
Also, I saw a clip of it in the video, check out the SNL Unitology music video but watch the original Scientology music video first. That was another superb parody.
