There are only 2 possible reasons for anyone having given this a dislike. One, because they're sad that doctor John is no longer living. Two, because they're jealous that they can't play piano anywhere near as well as he did.

Lord Have Mercy!!! That is something else. Dr. John had to have tapped into some otherworldly powers to play the way he did. It's a genuine thrill to listen to him play. I am constantly amazed, and sometimes, he hits some phrases that make me laugh out loud... Wonderful!

I'm trying to decipher and learn this incredible difficult piece. And when I analyze it, I noticed that NO single riff or lick is the same. The reason this piece is so captivating is that he constantly changes riffs and mixes up catchy variations of previous played licks. What an incredible boogie woogie player Dr. John was.

    • @therealtruetwelfth798

He was really the Art Tatum of New Orleans piano playing. I don’t think that’s an exaggeration.

If you dig deep into NPRs archives you will find recordings of Marylin McPartlans 'Piano Jazz' radio show. Sift through those and you will find a hour of Marylin & Dr John chatting about their music and doing long duets together on two pianos. It will be well worth your search.

I wish I had time time to wrack you brain and be taught some cool stuff like this. I’m in Edinburgh and fairly accomplished at blues piano, but as I spend at least as much time playing blues guitar (or more), I just feel I’m never progressing fast enough. My main love & influence is the hard 1950’s piano blues styles of Otis Spann & Little Johnny Jones

The 3 chords are for the left hand :-). There is no note of the chromatic scale left untouched by his right hand - looks like he even hits D-flat a few times. The only thing constraining his right hand is his ear, his sense of rhythm, and his toolkit of riffs.

Start with the other simplified version of this that is on RUclips, then work up to this level of improvised embellishments. Believe that anything is possible. Don't think there is not enough time left to rise to anywhere near this level. You just have to love it, want to do it, and be patient - put in 10,000 hours of strategic practice and you will know what you are capable of.
