Just a thought on the lift. The safty rods probably should have some return springs. So at the point you are ready to go down with the lift.
All one has to do is bump it up, and the safety arms spring back up into place out of the way.
In addition there is also something there to hold them up after they get wore in down the road, if you don't use them. Since I would not be surprised if the begin dropping down and not staying in place at some point, when the lift is older...
