@@Lamrett Eventually they'll have to start feeding deliveries of Nukies directly into the woodchipper just to keep the flow from overwhelming the studio.
The bids on your Nukie are insane just two hours after you released this video. Expect at least a half dozen news article about how the least likely movie managed to hit (at least) $50k in auction.
Just went on ebay and there's a sealed copy listed for almost $10,000, the description mentions how the rlm copy went for $80,000 and what a great investment it would be to buy this one! Scalpers didn't get the joke I guess 🤷
I'm really inquisitive as to how much that one-of-a-kind Rich Evans polaroid would actually fetch at auction. I mean, it's been on the Ellen Show for God's sake!!!
Not really, no. Half the bids are from an account that's never bid on anything else, and half the bids are from someone who's only bid on one other item, where 95% of their bids are on this one videotape. Meaning it's extremely unlikely either person is actually going to pay what they're bidding.
Also ebay is now totally geared towards buyers, these guys with 0% feedbacks can just ruin your auctions, not pay and you can't even leave a negative feedback as a seller.
I think my favorite thing about this video is that within the first minute Rich explain the entire premise of how a scummy and scammy person can artificially create a market to get a big headline that whoever sold whatever tape for this much money, you're not going to pick the obscure thing. Meanwhile that's what they did, and literally every single article posted about this, with this video linked, with that exact big headline that they sold it for over 80K after destroying all the copies, but no one watched the video and got outraged. This video is the most perfect analysis of this trend since it was literally proven in the future what they said
Fun fact: It has been discovered that a lot of the speculation of the video game cartridges is provably market manipulation by a grading website and an auction house owned by the same people.
That's what I'm thinking. This sounds so much like what Karl Jobst uncovered over the past few years with Wata/Heritage. Back to the Future = Super Mario Bros of VHS tapes.
It’s the same story with so many things in the 2020’s now. Crypto, stocks and shorts manipulation, etc. This is truly the age of unregulated late stage capitalism metastasizing into an economic cancerous growth, figuratively speaking. It’s become too easy to astroturf your own artificial explosion of activity and hype on something with no actual use or need.
This video has everything. A look into collectibles and the sneaky side of grading companies, a cool interesting look at memorabilia RLM own, a mini Best of the Worst, mass destruction of all Nukie tapes with a woodchipper, and a charity auction. Loved every second of this
Mike originally wanted to donate to a charity that euthanizes the elderly, but when he learned no such thing exists he instead opted to donate to the furthest thing from the elderly he could find.

here is my best guess on why this video exists. they recorded the nukie botw, didn't get any valuable content and decided to do this video so it wasn't a waste of time and they can stop getting botheredabout watching it.
It's genuinely uncanny hearing RLM talk about charity and the unironic importance of helping children with cancer and homeless animals. This whole doc format and tonal shift was a surprise. This is why I love RLM, always got something special up their sleeves.
As someone who saw speculators and opportunists come in to the sealed video game market, the same type of folks are attempting to run the same playbook with VHS tapes. It's all just a pump and dump -- hype and "inform" people of what is "rare and important" to try and get fresh money into the market. Oh, and big "legit" sales certainly help, and maybe some articles/coverage from mainstream media. However, the ones who "get in early" will usually be the only ones to turn a profit on their investment, and those who come in later will be stuck holding the bag. I don't follow this VHS market, but the sealed video game market bubble has already crashed after a few years of insane prices. I expect the same to happen here.
And shelf collectors inflated the video game market to an extent long before speculators & opportunists. It's almost a 'make your bed you lie in it' type situation. I'd say the VHS collectors market is different because it practically didn't exist and if it did it was extremely niche, while video game collecting was a well established "hobby", if you can call collecting anything for the sake of collecting a legitimate hobby.
@@UToobin75 I would argue that "shelf collectors" weren't and aren't involved in coordinated pump and dumps -- they are just collecting. Big, big difference. Any market will get a bump in prices with more interest and people buying, but that's not the same as coordinated scheming, pumping, and then dumping to leave someone holding the proverbial bag.
I've been loosely following the VHS market and it isn't crashing down like the sealed videogame market is, at least yet. What's instead happening is people are pairing VHS copies with DVDs, Blu-Rays, and UBDs together. What's interesting is sometimes the DVD or UBDs are the rarest versions out there. A lot of movies have really weird DVD runs that makes for actual rare finds. I personally have a version of The Warriors on DVD with Korean Subtitles, plus other subs too. This is was a small run DVD that I got for Christmas as a teenager, and I have no intentions of ever selling it. I am just use it as an example. The VHS market is essentially being used as a tool to prop up the actual rarities of DVD and UBDs. A lot of movies will have limited runs of UBDs, especially versions that come with free digital downloads. I have a friend who collects these rare UBDs and has spent a pretty penny on some movies that he watches. Sealed versions are out of his grasp, but he prefers to watch them. The collectable movie market is insane and it's funny that VHS tapes are the most common types out there, with DVDs and UBDs competing for rarest.
@@PatTheNESpunkexactly. One could argue about the merit of collecting something just to allow it to get dusty on a shelf, but collectors assembling (relatively) small personal collections is a little different to these schemes, which are just people trying to make a buck.

This isn't the first time Hertiage Auctions has tried to start a speculation bubble. They notably did this to video games. Heritage funded a company which would grade retro video games. That company (WATA Games) would give seemingly arbitrary ratings, suggesting these old games be worth ridiculous amounts. Heritage Auctions would then work exclusively with WATA, not allowing any video game grading companies to give input. When it came out that Heritage bought its own stock to make headlines (such as the NES Super Mario Bros selling for $10,000 years ago), they were hit with a lawsuit.
Happy birthday, Rich! So glad you can finally enjoy the therapy plus boxed set we sent! Love that Mike hid it for almost 4 years for just the right moment. Keep up the good work, gentlemen!
The genius of asking "what makes something valuable" then tying that to a good cause. You've literally and metaphorically made the Nukie one of the most valuable VHS tapes ever✌
Exactly! I was a bit miffed when they started destroying all the tapes, finding it a bit disrespectful for anyone who send them the tapes to be part of the "Nukie Wall". Now everyone who sent a tape has the warm fuzzy feeling in their stomach to be part of something truely wholesome. True genius indeed. If I didn't love the RLM guys already, I would now. ❤❤❤
My only qualm is that there's nothing on the Nukie VHS to guarantee it was the version owned (and given a stay of execution) by Red Letter Media, but then, maybe that's the whole point.
@@DeflatingAtheism It'd make sense if there was a certificate included by the grading company that ties the specific item to whoever had the grading commisioned. I don't know how the process works and if such a certificate exists though.

This reminds me of when people were trying to make a CIB copy of Super Mario Bros on the NES be the most expensive game when it's one of the most widely circulated cartridge of all time, and somehow more valuable than games where less than 1 million copies exist (ie: Gimmick, Summer Carnival '92 Recca, Little Samson, etc)
To be slightly fair here, the copy you're likely referring to was a sealed copy of an extremely rare variant from the initial test market run. Also in general CIB copies of NES Mario Bros are relatively uncommon because pretty much every NES sold came with a loose copy of the cartridge. Comparatively few copies that came in a box were sold separately.
I'll never understand how a loose NES cart of SMB3 can be $30 considering the millions of copies sold (and all the other ways to play it). And I grew up in that time. I'm not paying no $40 for an SMB3 cart. That price charting says it's $20 not withstanding. Still too much.

St. Jude pays a lot of money to the company I work for. This always makes those fundraising adverts feel weird. But now, this donation means part of my paycheck this month could be indirectly from RLM. Even weirder that its full circle back to Wisconsin.
I was actually surprised by how cheap and bad Nukie looked. I was expecting a typical mediocre cash-grab E.T. knockoff (and the E.T. knockoff aspect was so obvious they didn't bother mentioning it.)

This is one of the best videos they've ever made. They explained the recent rise in auctioning off rare VHS tapes, meanwhile leading me to be believe that they weren't actually going to discuss the movie at all. Then they end with nine minutes of Nukie, destroy all of the copies they owned, both to test Mike's theory of whether or not rarity of even a lousy tape can increase its value, to auctioning off Nukie, and splitting the money earned from the auction between two charities. St. Jude's means a lot to me, and so do these guys. RIP Nukie. Nukie! Nukie! Nukie! Nukie! Nukie Nukie! Nukie! Nukie! Nukie! Nukie! Nukie!
I think this was different than I expected, but I am more than happy with how you guys finally tackled the greatest movie ever made. @@liam2745 You are correct up to a point. The more versatile you are the better. If you are extremely good at mechanical engineering you can cross into biomed engineering easy. Same with electrical engineering which I would argue is more useful in biomed. You will fix electrical systems that are more complicated generally than mechanical. Usually the mechanical problems make intuitive sense anyway (i.e. pump won't pump...). The biggest skill is being able to adapt what you know in one area for applications in biology. I would recommend not pursuing biomed engineering directly because the industry wants experts in traditional engineering fields. But as I said, if you are good at one thing, and can understand the biology you are golden. It is a big deal if you can interpret the engineering and biology elements together. Knowing both sides means you can replace two people to solve one problem.

@shsrpr it's the same company doing it
Yeah, Heritage is seen in this video too. I guess the games grift didn't last too long huh
And it pisses me off because there are some games I want to buy for sentimental reasons but they are outrageously priced.
It’s the same story with so many things in the 2020’s now. It’s become too easy to astroturf your own artificial explosion of activity and hype on something with no actual use or need.

I was half expecting them to take out a hammer and smash the shit out of the Nukie tape after they said that! :D

It's the same grading company and auction
To be slightly fair here, the copy you're likely referring to was a sealed copy of an extremely rare variant from the initial test market run.
Also in general CIB copies of NES Mario Bros are relatively uncommon because pretty much every NES sold came with a loose copy of the cartridge. Comparatively few copies that came in a box were sold separately.
Same company too
I'll never understand how a loose NES cart of SMB3 can be $30 considering the millions of copies sold (and all the other ways to play it). And I grew up in that time. I'm not paying no $40 for an SMB3 cart. That price charting says it's $20 not withstanding. Still too much.

I really, really hope that it ends up being legit because >$75k for charity from this frankly ridiculous channel that just comes down to 'some pals cynically talking shite about movies that's somehow ended up being really popular' would be a great achievement.
You can bid whatever you want but if you don't pay and do it 3 times, I think you get the boot, from those criminals at ebay.
It's a win-win!

I love that the Nukie video is probably the best thing RLM has done.
One of your best! Jays editing and Mikes writing really shine here!
I am a research biomedical engineer and Rich Evans just explained my whole life better than I could. Falling up is literally all I've ever done.
Are there many biomedical engineering positions? I’ve heard that it’s better to go into mechanical
There was a big market manipulation scheme going on with Nintendo 64 games a year or two ago, very similar to this VHS situation.
If bubsy 64 was worth anything, even at the height of that... 😦
Karl Jobst ran a very well produced video regarding that very debacle and it was so presumably accurate that a flood of videos supposably 'debunking' his assertions followed and all those subsequent videos just so happened to be produced by none other than those with a vested interest in manipulating that market
it wasn't a 64 thing, It was games in general and a lot of them were NES games
