Fun Fact: One of the releases of _Nukie_ actually used _Mac and Me_ art on its box. I am *NOT* even joking. Look it up. It's a French version that goes by the name _"Nukie et Miko."_ That's what they have. It actually is a copy of _Nukie!_ They had so little faith in releasing it, they replaced the art with a different shitty _E.T._ ripoff, hahaha.
@@MaximumMadnessStixon I was confused as to why there were different pressings of Nukie with different cover art. Now I see that there were different pressings for different countries, and am even more confused now.
@@DeflatingAtheism I'm not exactly sure why it'd be confusing. Different companies own distribution rights in different countries, and will sometimes produce their own cover art and whatnot. That's typically how it has always worked. (It's also possible that specific cover art might be copyrighted to certain companies and thus couldn't be reused by everyone else without paying extra.) Additionally, they have to produce versions in other languages, which is why there would be multiple pressings. You're not going to release an English-language tape and case in Germany, for example. As for the _Nukie et Miko_ case, I'm guessing the same company owned the distribution rights to both _Nukie_ and _Mac and Me_ in that region, realized that the _Mac and Me_ cover art was more appealing... so they recycled the art to deceptively try to make a quick buck.
If I ran an online VHS Grading company, and some guy called Mike sent me a sealed copy of Nukie, my alarm bells would already be ringing. Probably safer to double check all the other shit he sent
All of Mike's various layers of cynicism and irony instantly evaporated when he saw the first tape go into the woodchipper. In that moment he experienced true wonder.
The moment that first Nukie hit the chipper was so much better than I expected. Such a chaotic explosion of plastic and magnetic tape it almost brought a tear in my eye. Glorious.
RLM behind the scenes fact: one of the charities was originally going to be providing care to the ailing elderly but Mike was unable to stop uncontrollably laughing when they tried to film that portion so it was scrapped
So as of this point they've exceeded that Back to the Future tape's sale price, meaning they've broken the record for a videotape sale? Bravo for doing that in a way that underlines how wrong all this videotape speculation stuff is. This actually deserves to make the news.
No, they haven't. The betting activity is almost entirely by people who have either bid on no other items or one other item, meaning the bids aren't going to translate into an actual sale at that price.
@@MegaZetabidders are anonymized, you can’t know that. RLM has friends and followers in the film industry. They have the money and a donation is tax write of as far as I know. You can also see that the bidding slowed down, meaning that it’s not just people trolling the price upwards but actually people thinking about how much they want to spend/donate.
Considering the buzz its generating Mega, it's probably going to sell for a price beyond the BTTF tape, people will cope and say its just for charity though so it "doesn't count".
I get that they’re making a point with this, but I also have to wonder if destroying 100 VHS copies enough if this were for an actual speculative market? Like there have to be thousands of copies still out there right?
@@BradsGonnaPlay Fact is, it's a horrible movie no one's gonna want anyway. I mean, I'm not even interested in seeing it, much less buying a copy (and I have a VCR). There might not be that many copies out there, but the demand must also be really low. The important thing is that even though it may have been a stunt, they raised a lot of money for charity. Well done.
@@sticksmcfly it’s still up on eBay as of right now. It’s up to $80,400 with 222 bids on it. What’s hilarious is other people trying to cash in on the hype with listings of the same movie, that have listing tiles like “another vhs copy of nukie or something”, and “Nukie - a space adventure - rare - portion benefits charity- own something!”😂 My favorite one on eBay right now is a vhs copy of E.T. with the title “E.T. The extra terrestrial - VHS NUKIE RIPOFF SEALED”.🤣🤣 What’s interesting is every listing has active bidders on it.
It’s a real shame too. Not long ago, video game and video tape collectors were buying them because they wanted to have the game/tape, either to play it, or because they had some attachment to it. Speculators are ruining all of that and the older collectors are getting priced out by people who are just buying things to sell them.
It is sad, but just like comics in the 90's the bubble will burst dramatically, and then collectors will be able to find them in bargain bins for 5 bucks again
Yeah, I used to collect Nintendo and Super Nintendo games, so I could actually fucking play them. I got priced out a long time ago. Good thing there are other, less expensive ways to play old games...

From the e-Bay listing: On Jan-02-23 at 09:31:54 PST, seller added the following information: Just a note to those bidding who are NOT in the United States... In order to ship overseas, this item will have to be insured for the value it's sold for. You may have to pay a customs fee on that value depending on your country. Please think long and hard before trying to win this auction now that it is at an astronomical amount of money. Ask yourself... what would Nukie do?
9 months later, there are plenty of VHS copies of Nukie available on Ebay, the cheapest auction is currently at around $100 and very quickly ramps up to $2k+ asking price. Meanwhile every copy of Back to the Future on VHS caps at about $11 including shipping.
You also have to factor in that one of the theories the RLM frauds pointed out was that the Back to the Future VHS tape in particular had specific value; it belonged to Tom Wilson, the guy who played Biff Tannen and all the other guys in the Tannen family tree in the trilogy. Condition helped, but because it was owned by someone who was part of the film also played a role. Meanwhile, people who missed that tangent also missed the point assumed that, suddenly, VHS tapes are now going to be super valuable when; no, it's just that particular VHS copy, and thus are struggling to make any money on sales.
@bigjohnsbreakfastlog5819 sometimes justice prevails. For all the true fan collectors out there; should you ever need to part with a piece from your collection, I pray that some speculating loser pays you 100x your minimum price, and that their "investment" bites them so badly that you are eventually able to buy it back from them for less than your original asking price.
@@bigjohnsbreakfastlog5819yep, the number of BTTF tapes floating around in the wild is always going to be magnitudes greater than the number of Nukie ones
75 grand as of now. If someone DOES end up actually buying it for an insane amount, there may just be enough left over for Mike to finally bring back the Dodo
I'll be honest, I never thought it would get that kind of money. I have to assume that it's Culkin and hollywood friends who are bidding... and good on them in all honesty (for charity). Even still, it's nuts and probably more than the film cost to make in the first place lol.
The bids on your Nukie are insane just two hours after you released this video. Expect at least a half dozen news article about how the least likely movie managed to hit (at least) $50k in auction.
Gotta love the one off RLM videos. It really brings out their chaotic side. Full belly laugh when the first tape hit the chipper. Don’t be sad because the Nukie Shelf is gone, smile because it all got obliterated for a great video
There were probably at least a couple tapes already in the post on the way to them before this vid hit... People aren't going to stop... Plus there's the very real possibility that the winner of the auction just sends it straight back.
@@Lamrett Eventually they'll have to start feeding deliveries of Nukies directly into the woodchipper just to keep the flow from overwhelming the studio.
Not really, no. Half the bids are from an account that's never bid on anything else, and half the bids are from someone who's only bid on one other item, where 95% of their bids are on this one videotape. Meaning it's extremely unlikely either person is actually going to pay what they're bidding.
Also ebay is now totally geared towards buyers, these guys with 0% feedbacks can just ruin your auctions, not pay and you can't even leave a negative feedback as a seller.
I'm really inquisitive as to how much that one-of-a-kind Rich Evans polaroid would actually fetch at auction. I mean, it's been on the Ellen Show for God's sake!!!
Fact: all those shredded tapes where sent to the NSRC (Nukie Surgical Reconstruction Center) to be polished with woodoo hide after they finished shooting.
Only RLM can point out a scam. And end up selling a copy of a VHS they've made fun of, for more than the scammers did for the $75K Back to the Future is a phenomenal feat, as the bid for Nukie is over $75K already. And going to charity, this is why the RLM guys are truly awesome guys.

here is my best guess on why this video exists. they recorded the nukie botw, didn't get any valuable content and decided to do this video so it wasn't a waste of time and they can stop getting botheredabout watching it.
Holy shit, I think these kind of "random talk and stuff" videos are actually my favorite after BOTW. This channel's educacional value is seriously underrated.
It's almost like video game grading and VHS grading are absolutely low-tier scams that have ruined fun hobbies for the small collective of people who actually enjoyed them!
@@user-account-not-found It's not so much about availability of the games in whatever form, it's that these people are parachuting themselves into niche collectibles markets, wrecking them with these pump and dump schemes and walking off with a sack of cash while a bunch of somewhat less punctual grifters are left carrying the bag. These are artifical distortions of once somewhat stable hobbies through external forces. The collectors still want to collect, and they find themselves priced out of the market by speculators, maybe for years at a time.
People willing to dish out lots of money for old video games to collect them in graded quality has always been a thing, but the recent trend within the past 5 years is absolutely a bullshit scam caused by insiders wanting to make a quick buck. The (what feels like an internet decade ago) exposure of WATA and the ridiculous bullshit coming from that is a premium example of shit people infiltrating and manipulating things for profit. I don't own any graded games, but I do collect old video games that I have enjoyed over the decades just to have on the shelf because it makes me happy, and I enjoy re-reading physical manuals and having the old cloth maps to look at and what not (I own all of them on GOG as well). While it doesn't directly affect me, I still think it's bullshit (also the artificial inflation of prices of non-graded games for awhile just made collecting a nightmare because of it).
Amazing how many articles on this video are missing the satire completely. They think that destroying the Nukie tapes was actually done to increase the value, as opposed to an obvious joke.
Any link to some Articels? I tried to google it from here in Germany, but google only searches german News Outletts, which did not write an single articel about RLM :(

I think my favorite thing about this video is that within the first minute Rich explain the entire premise of how a scummy and scammy person can artificially create a market to get a big headline that whoever sold whatever tape for this much money, you're not going to pick the obscure thing. Meanwhile that's what they did, and literally every single article posted about this, with this video linked, with that exact big headline that they sold it for over 80K after destroying all the copies, but no one watched the video and got outraged. This video is the most perfect analysis of this trend since it was literally proven in the future what they said
Pretty sure the sudden surge of 'Hey, VHS are worth money' is being orchestrated by the same guy who claimed that one copy of Mario 64 was worth a multi-brazillion dollars... Spoilers: It really wasn't. His company was artificially inflating the price and someone with more money than brains paid them for their lie.
Mike originally wanted to donate to a charity that euthanizes the elderly, but when he learned no such thing exists he instead opted to donate to the furthest thing from the elderly he could find.
Hope none of those children are suffering from AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA terminal illness.
The ridiculous bid on this auction is ironically going to inflate the cost of VHS tapes... or maybe this was their plan all along: a 20 year long game of making " "funny" youtube videos" and building up a fanbase, only to have "their fans" send in their PRICELESS (literally, they're worth 0) VHS tapes -- now this is their exit strategy, to sell this collection after they created the market bubble... I knew they were grifters back when I saw the Phantom Menace review (back when it was 6 parts on the web1.0 website) -- actually, now that I think about it, the RLM "characters" were always grifters: remember when Mr. McCaulkin scammed the New York hotel with a STOLEN CREDIT CARD.
There is some good collectors stuff, but the problem is that there is speculators ruining it for collectors. A graded VHS might go for 2-3k in good condition if it is rare, if not for speculators. Speculators also adds zero value to the hobby.
It's up to 70K. I doubt the bidder actually intends to pay that... I'm guessing there's a whole bunch of assholes bidding on that particular auction trying to be funny, which is bullshit considering it's not a joke and they want to give the money to charity.
@@SioxerNikita Speculators ruined the used video game market by increasing the price tenfold because everyone had too much time and money during Covid. It's almost like that became too expensive so now they are going after the next retro thing, killing another hobby.
@@DantesGrill It wasn't just during Covid... Speculators have created expensive collectors markets like coins, stamps, etc. over many many years, try watch the video from Karl Jobst on it. It is a scary amount of fraud.
Happy birthday, Rich! So glad you can finally enjoy the therapy plus boxed set we sent! Love that Mike hid it for almost 4 years for just the right moment. Keep up the good work, gentlemen!
This isn't the first time Hertiage Auctions has tried to start a speculation bubble. They notably did this to video games. Heritage funded a company which would grade retro video games. That company (WATA Games) would give seemingly arbitrary ratings, suggesting these old games be worth ridiculous amounts. Heritage Auctions would then work exclusively with WATA, not allowing any video game grading companies to give input. When it came out that Heritage bought its own stock to make headlines (such as the NES Super Mario Bros selling for $10,000 years ago), they were hit with a lawsuit.
Fun fact: It has been discovered that a lot of the speculation of the video game cartridges is provably market manipulation by a grading website and an auction house owned by the same people.
That's what I'm thinking. This sounds so much like what Karl Jobst uncovered over the past few years with Wata/Heritage. Back to the Future = Super Mario Bros of VHS tapes.
It’s the same story with so many things in the 2020’s now. Crypto, stocks and shorts manipulation, etc. This is truly the age of unregulated late stage capitalism metastasizing into an economic cancerous growth, figuratively speaking. It’s become too easy to astroturf your own artificial explosion of activity and hype on something with no actual use or need.
The genius of asking "what makes something valuable" then tying that to a good cause. You've literally and metaphorically made the Nukie one of the most valuable VHS tapes ever✌
Exactly! I was a bit miffed when they started destroying all the tapes, finding it a bit disrespectful for anyone who send them the tapes to be part of the "Nukie Wall". Now everyone who sent a tape has the warm fuzzy feeling in their stomach to be part of something truely wholesome. True genius indeed. If I didn't love the RLM guys already, I would now. ❤❤❤
My only qualm is that there's nothing on the Nukie VHS to guarantee it was the version owned (and given a stay of execution) by Red Letter Media, but then, maybe that's the whole point.
@@DeflatingAtheism It'd make sense if there was a certificate included by the grading company that ties the specific item to whoever had the grading commisioned. I don't know how the process works and if such a certificate exists though.
As someone who saw speculators and opportunists come in to the sealed video game market, the same type of folks are attempting to run the same playbook with VHS tapes. It's all just a pump and dump -- hype and "inform" people of what is "rare and important" to try and get fresh money into the market. Oh, and big "legit" sales certainly help, and maybe some articles/coverage from mainstream media. However, the ones who "get in early" will usually be the only ones to turn a profit on their investment, and those who come in later will be stuck holding the bag. I don't follow this VHS market, but the sealed video game market bubble has already crashed after a few years of insane prices. I expect the same to happen here.
And shelf collectors inflated the video game market to an extent long before speculators & opportunists. It's almost a 'make your bed you lie in it' type situation. I'd say the VHS collectors market is different because it practically didn't exist and if it did it was extremely niche, while video game collecting was a well established "hobby", if you can call collecting anything for the sake of collecting a legitimate hobby.
@@UToobin75 I would argue that "shelf collectors" weren't and aren't involved in coordinated pump and dumps -- they are just collecting. Big, big difference. Any market will get a bump in prices with more interest and people buying, but that's not the same as coordinated scheming, pumping, and then dumping to leave someone holding the proverbial bag.
I've been loosely following the VHS market and it isn't crashing down like the sealed videogame market is, at least yet. What's instead happening is people are pairing VHS copies with DVDs, Blu-Rays, and UBDs together. What's interesting is sometimes the DVD or UBDs are the rarest versions out there. A lot of movies have really weird DVD runs that makes for actual rare finds. I personally have a version of The Warriors on DVD with Korean Subtitles, plus other subs too. This is was a small run DVD that I got for Christmas as a teenager, and I have no intentions of ever selling it. I am just use it as an example. The VHS market is essentially being used as a tool to prop up the actual rarities of DVD and UBDs. A lot of movies will have limited runs of UBDs, especially versions that come with free digital downloads. I have a friend who collects these rare UBDs and has spent a pretty penny on some movies that he watches. Sealed versions are out of his grasp, but he prefers to watch them. The collectable movie market is insane and it's funny that VHS tapes are the most common types out there, with DVDs and UBDs competing for rarest.

That Nukie tape destroying segment felt like that scene in a political drama where corrupt officials desperately start destroying evidence before the authorities show up.
That was how "The Anderson Tapes" (1971) ended. The various state and federal agencies that had members of the gang under surveillance for various reasons (though none of them could see the big picture and figure out the gang was planning a major heist) independently realized all their recordings had various constitutional issues and erased them all.

It’s a real shame too. Not long ago, video game and video tape collectors were buying them because they wanted to have the game/tape, either to play it, or because they had some attachment to it. Speculators are ruining all of that and the older collectors are getting priced out by people who are just buying things to sell them.

That it equal parts hilarious and super depressing.
@@PatTheNESpunkexactly. One could argue about the merit of collecting something just to allow it to get dusty on a shelf, but collectors assembling (relatively) small personal collections is a little different to these schemes, which are just people trying to make a buck.
I rarely comment on videos even though RLM is my favorite channel. But gosh darn it this video is one of the best things I’ve seen all year.
Agreed.
Did you know that I'm gay?
Red Letter Media is peak comedy and quality and will forever be the top channel on RUclips.
Over 35k for an 8.5 graded Nukie. This is wild.
“Do I want to buy a Hyundai, or a better than average graded VHS tape” 🤔
an hour later and it's ABOUT 50k now.
@@RakastanPorkkanakakkua It's at $49,700
This man is a liar. Everyone come here at laugh at the lying man who lied. He thought he could get away with it because of how fast it's rising, but he got caught. Got lying. Liar.
Buy it and see if it will antenna!
Because it's not real, it's just a bunch of troll bids that will never go through.
@@possibly_a_retard Brutal, I really hope you never catch me lying!
It’s so inspiring to watch strangers you feel a strong connection to age, but never grow up.
Took a massive dump on the collectors market, speculators and the grading
Finally watched Nukie and destroyed it in a glorious fashion
Sells the one good tape and its about to overtake the Back to the Future tape already
You released this on 30th of December, but its already my #1 Best Video I Have Watched of the Year. Great work.
Rich explaining what he does as “falling” not “failing” upwards is either perfect or he’s become self aware. Please Jebus make it the former!
Falling upward of the Folding Chable of fate.
I think it was intentional, because Mike is constantly abusing him by filming him falling on stuff.
It's hard to be sure.
On one hand, it's Rich Evans.
On the other, it's Rich Evans.
The last shot of Rich cleaning up needed to be like David Lynch in Twin Peaks the return; He just sweeps for fifteen minutes straight.
You mean like the ending of "Melting Man"?
@@alexeikotov7769It reminded me of the ending of margin call when Kevin spacey was digging a grave for his dead dog
This is my first video ever watched on this channel. The fact these guys are donating the money to two great charities is awesome. Made me a brand new fan. Long love Nukie! 😄
You are so lucky! If only I had the power to go back in time and experience so many magical moments for the first time again… 😢
How I'd love to experience Rich Evans again for the very first time.
I really hope they make more videos like this. The format is great
Couldn't agree more!
this is performance art, the fact the guys would probably hate that descriptor makes it uh, art-er-er
It's almost experimental.
Regular Joseph Bueys
they're masters of their crap
It sure subverted my expectations.
Absolutely
The most shocking thing about this video is finding out the tape room is on the second floor
The plan was never to make Nukie more valuable, but to make sure no one was ever exposed to that monstrosity ever again. Proving it was more valuable than Back to the Future and giving back to charity was just a bonus.
This format is really great! I would love more videos like this in the future whenever you guys find a topic that intrests you. Over a decade of videos and still trucking on strong coming up with new ideas and formats, this is why RLM is the king!
Pretty sure this was a 10th Anniversary thing so don't expect it to become its own series
@@alexsilva28 Yeah that might be true. Still, fun to always see new stuff 👍
Long live the Kings!

Wait ,What? For real?
The way all the tapes seemed to splatter against the wall was genuinely mesmerizing
It kinda reminded me of the aliens from Arrival. Truly a sight to behold.
They missed the chance to invite the SloMoGuys to record it with their ultra slow motion cams though.
Speaking of collector's items, I recently purchased a copy of a Don Beveridge book in the hopes of someday getting it signed by these guys, only to get it in the mail and realize it's already signed by the man himself.
Rest in peace, Mr. Beveridge. I hope every whopper button was pushed simultaneously in your honor. May you find eternal peace and happiness on a cloud of bagels.
Don Beveridge had strange examples and an overbearing stage presence, but everything he said was valid business advice. RIP Mr. Beveridge.
see I'd have had him sign a beverage container of some kind.
