    This video needs more views! I purchased the Top of the line Ego with the 10ah battery to mow my front lawn and it bogged down 4 times trying to mulch the grass and battery died right before I finished. Brought it back to Lowes the same day.

    Hi Chris,
    Thanks for this great review. I was on the fence with getting the EGo after someone stole my beloved HRX217. I thought about the EGo but I decided that nothing could replace the HRX217 but another HRX217 so I got the new one, sitting in a box and ready for my unboxing video in a couple of weeks.😁
    I was having some regrets about not giving electric a shot and then coming across this video really helped confirm that I made the right choice.
    I also got some nice handlebar tape and an hourmeter tachometer module. These were the two things I missed after 10 years of using my old HRX217 190, which ran beautifully and sipped gas, it was the top of the electric start but you had to charge the battery, the new one recharges from the engine which was my only issue with the old one, otherwise never a problem with that mower, it will last you a lifetime if you take care of it.
    Funny thing I bought those metal guards sets too for the old one but I never installed them because I was afraid to drill the deck back then but seeing them on your mower, they actually look really nice. The first mower I've seen them on installed.
    The tape on the handlebar is something I thought about for years on the old one because the metal to metal hitting chips the paint and mine had rust there all the time, so not just the comfort factor.
    But yeah, don't know why they still didn't address that on the new 200 cc models. That's why I bought it with this new one from the get go. The HRX does have the nice ball bearing 9 inch wheels, it's the little things...☺, but you're right, it's a pain to fight the transmission when pushing it or pulling it back without power, they really should have a hydrogear disconnect like a tractor, after all it really is built like one.
    Overall, nobody makes anything better, that mower is in it's own class. After 10 years of use that nexite deck never cracked and it was used on rough ground and I frequently had to mow 3 acres of grass with it when my tractor was down for whatever reason over the years, it was my combination trimmer as well a full backup. A legacy from living in the burbs but here I am getting another one because nothing sucks leaves and debris better or cuts better than that. You're gonna love it. No regrets.
    I'll be having a whole bunch of videos about it on my channel soon. Definitely subbed you as you have the same ideas on this mower as me.😁
    One question, how is the Auto Choke?, mine, the 190, had the regular manual choke, which I liked but the new one is automatic, which I know nothing about but I hope it's not crap.
    Cheers
    Greg😎

    I bought the LM2156SP and it powers through dense grass as well as running for 75 minutes. I run the mulching blade and it leaves almost no clippings on the surface. It performs much better than my Craftsman with a Briggs engine.

      Agree. They are shipping now with the mulching blade standard. I think their customer feedback is like yours, so they are going with it as a mulching mower as the standard setup (they still give you a bagger and the high lift blade set in the box).

    • @ovp66223
      @ovp66223 2 года назад

      This should help IF it doesn't slow down the blade due to low resistance. I think that is the othe problem, to make battery last, most of these electrics have programming to reduce blade rpm when load (thickness of what is being cut) is less. Mowing over leaves is very low resistance (usually, unless super wet) and thus if the blade slows down, suction drops and bagging leaves becomes...troublesome.
      With this high lift blade, can you now bag leaves? That was a big complaint (one of the few) with Ego mowers as I read reviews yesterday.

    Chris - one of the best side-by-side gas vs. electric reviews...warts and all after eating humble pie and returning the EGO,
    I have an older HRX217 and was considering the EGO, but their customer service gets VERY poor reviews and there are few EGO service centers for repairs. The biggest factor, however, is the battery degradation over time. $300 to $500 for a battery replacement every 3 years or so is more than the gas and oil used during that period. The EGO mower has its place, but it is not for everyone, as you point out.

    I have been trying to decide whether to buy a battery or gas mower for about two months. I really wanted to try a Ryobi but the blades are a little flimsy and I worry about if it hits something it might not hold up like a gas mower blade. And some times I let my lawn go and it gets pretty tall I a battery mower battery might run down before the yard is finished. Anyway I think I will probably go with another gas mower basically for all the reasons you mentioned. For the price of a extra battery I can buy a lot of gas. Thanks for the video and the advice I received from watching it. Have a good summer and stay safe.

      @@madsam0320 changing the oil once every other year (or every year if really conservative) is hardly "regular" maintenance. You tap the dust out of the air filter every 3 or 4 mows and replace it every other year. Blade sharpening? Both gas and electric demand that, so not part of gas powered cons. Add in obscene costs of lithium battery modules and battery powered electrics are still many years away from being practical for most of us.

    I've been switching back and forth between Honda and Ego. I own Ego trimmer, edger, and blower with two 2.5ah batteries. I love the products! Super quiet and easy to work with. However, I just can't get myself into an electric lawnmower. Batteries will eventually need to be replaced and they are not cheap. I don't think the light weight of the ego will mix well with an uneven lawn. And if something goes wrong with the mower I don't feel much shops can do much to fix these electric mowers.
    There is something about pulling the cord of a gas mower and smelling those fumes that makes mowing a lawn enjoyable.

    • @ovp66223
      @ovp66223 2 года назад +3

      yep, I have spent roughly $130 over the past 10 YEARS in gas, oil and air filters (1/5 acre, 2.2 gallons or so covers my whole mowing season each year so maybe $8/year in gas on average past 10 years). There is no chance electric is cheaper if I have to buy a $400 battery once during that 10 years, and include maybe $40-$50 in electric bill cost (over 10 years) to recharge the batteries (and I am being reasonable, it's not free to charge, but cheaper than gas) and suddenly I am spending $60/year more to operate an electric lawn mower over 10 years. That's not what I have been told by all these reviews, the low maintenance is true, but cost is still more and maintenance for me is 15 minutes to change the oil every OTHER year and 5 minutes once a month to open air filter housing, grab filter, tap it on the ground and replace it. So I put in maybe 1 hour a year in maintenance time. This year it was more like 5 hours as I, after 10 years, finally remove the head and cleaned off some carbon buildup and replaced spark plug first time (didn't need it, but I did anyway).
      I think electric, as far as saving money, is still years away, maybe the next battery technology after lithium? The cost of lithium keeps going up thanks to more electric stuff needing more batteries. Batteries for a mower you buy this year, may well be $600 or $700 in 5 years and not the current $450 for this admittedly nice, 10 amp/hour battery. It won't go down in price, though neither will gasoline (it will drop down to $3/gallon again, but I also expect to see it hit $6 here at some point in next 5 years as well). I know in some overtaxed states it's at $6/gallon already, but its just over $4/gallon here in Atlanta, GA, and topped out about $4.50 in my area about two months ago.

    Great review. I tried an electric Ego recently. Very enjoyable cutting experience. The lightweight mower was a dream to push(and reverse). However, my lawn is a bit uneven and the mower was bouncing all over the place. The Ego motor died on me numerous times during the cut, as soon as it hit thicker patches of grass. Now, it's nothing to start back up but it was annoying. I bought a Honda HRX mower and took back the Ego. The Honda was about the same price as the Ego Select Cut, too. For me, the deciding factor was having friends with battery issues on the Ego...even two years into Ego ownership. So many have had failed batteries and it might take more than a week to get them in from Ego on warranty. That's downtime for mowing(less a problem if you buy additional batteries...but then your costs go up considerably). Also, the self propelled mechanism on the Ego just felt too cheap to me. There's not much to go wrong on a gas engine either...Oil, air filter, and spark plug(the Honda does have a choke actuator need for replacement from time to time). It was a tough decision for me to return it and get another gas model. My junky MTD push mower is 12 years and I never did anything to it but change out wheels and change out oil every few years. It goes through 7 gallons of gas per mowing season. Even if gas were 4.50/gallon, that's only 31.50/yr in gas. Much cheaper than a new Ego battery every 5 years. That thing can run over trees or big branches and keep going. I'd be afraid to try that with the Ego. It's a tradeoff, though. A mix of mowing ease, convenience, and cost.

    I am 100% in agreement with Chris. There are so many reasons not to go with a gas mower. That being said I have not yet seen an electric mower have the power, suction and durability of a high quality gas mower. I got rid of my Ego and replaced it with an HRX217HYA and could not be happier. I hate doing the oil changes and the challenges of fuel, but the Ego could not mulch through tall and tough StAug like the Honda can.
    I am committed to the Ego-revolution. I run all of my smaller tools (edger, trimmer, chain saw, blower) with Ego and can't imagine a better product. I'm sure that any current gaps will be closed on the mower side...but I can't say that we have reached there yet. Maybe in a few more years.

      @vparmato 3 года назад

      @@Mr-Chris ...yes great mower. My biggest challenge with the Ego was not simply power or torque, it just did not have enough lift. My StAug is tall and thick and without stron g lift it will not work. I was having to mow my lawn twice with the Ego in particularly thick and dense areas.
      Another thing I've noticed is the blade on the Ego is much lighter. I think it has to be to work well in an electric mower. That said, I was constantly having to sharpen it because it is so thin and the metal was very soft. I have not found this to be an issue on the Honda since the blade is heavier and seems to be stronger. I must admit that due to the Honda mower weight, sharpening the blade is more work that simply tipping over the lightweight Ego...however I would rather just have to sharpen less.
      I encourage folks to go Ego if their grass type and needs fit it. I lived in Colorado where the winter grass was not significantly challenging to mow and the Ego excelled. When I moved to Texas with much denser St. Aug, it just could not cut it as well. Sometimes in these Ego vs. Gasoline Mower debates, we are simply not on an even comparative and a lot of it has to do with what our cultivar is and how much volume of grass needs to be cut and then mulched.
      Also...thanks for all of the tips to 'bling out' the HRX. I've taken them all and they are now on my mower as well. The mower deck guards were a great add. It would have been better for Honda to just install these out of the box, but...whatever.

    People tend to be like Apple fanboys when it comes to Ego. No less than Tesla lovers. They’ll justify any flaw by grabbing at any straws they can, or just repeat the same stuff they read someone else say.
    That doesn’t mean they make a bad product, or at least that not all their products are bad, but in turn not all of what they do is great. In ego’s case, if you care about cut quality, dependability, and being able to have your product repaired, good luck with Ego.
    I had their first dual battery mower after having a good experience with their string trimmer. The darn thing was $750 bucks at the time. In a year the thing died and needed to be replaced which took a good few months. The cut quality was never as good as my original gas.
    I like you went with an hrx217, I only run ethanol free gas so I have zero issues firing up after the winter. The oil change took 10 minutes in the beginning of the year. Other than that, I fill the gas and sharpen the blade. The latter of which needs to be done on an ego too.
    Even the the big green machine (commercial grade) electric mowers suffer from a lot of the same issues. I was more than willing to drop 2.5k on an all electric option if could deliver the cut quality and run time of gas. It doesn’t exist yet. It’s not that it couldn’t, but you would probably need way more batteries and a way more powerful electric motor than what a consumer would be willing to pay for.
    All that said, when it comes to electric, going for award, I’m going with STIHL. They have dealers all over, way more attachments, and for mowing, I’ll stick with gas until a more established commercial grade company starts going all in with battery.
    Finally, anyone who starts a comment with “ my crasftsman…” can just stop. You’re comparing a bottom barrel brand to true Honda mower. They’re not in the same league. No even if it had a Honda engine, still not the same.

    • @Mr-Chris
      @Mr-Chris  3 года назад +3

      Yes, the newer EGO mower has a bigger 10AH battery and strong motor than the one I had. The problem with EGO or any other battery powered mower is the inherit handicap of power balance. Every battery powered lawn mower runs at a lower, yet more power efficient RPM speed with a thinner/lighter cutting blade/s to save electricity. Many battery powered mowers speed up retroactively after feeling cutting resistance. Where as All gas mowers run at the same speed with thicker heaver blade/s no matter what. This gives Gas mowers superior suction and cutting performance. I can't wait until electric powered mowers completely outperform gas. I think it's the way to go for our future.

  • @ovp66223
    @ovp66223 2 года назад +2

    My one fear is twice the cost in the long run. If battery gets weaker (shorter charge) in 4 or 5 years and I am forced to buy a new one, it's nearly the cost of a new mower entirely. I currently have a Toro PP/SP, 2011 model, and I have probably spent about $7/yr in gas. It takes just under 2.5 gallons to mow once a week from early April to early October. One 2.5 gallon container all cutting season with maybe 1/4 gallon left over. Average gas prices since 2011 guessing about $3.30 a gallon (some times down near 2, mostly around 3 and sometimes, like now, up around 4/gallon). So I have spent, roughly $70 - $80 in gas over 10 years. I have also changed the oil 5 times (every other year, just wasn't dirty enough) and at less than 1 qt needed, and maybe avg $4.00 a quart, that's another $20 or so. Add in two air filters and not much else (well just changed spark plug first time, $5) and I am at roughly $100 in fuel, oil and filter costs over 10 years.
    A new EGO battery is over $400. Even if I needed a new engine, I can find them online for $200 - $300 dollars and its just a few bolts to replace it.
    If gas shoots up to $10/gallon and stays there, then electric makes sense, or if you have a rather large yard (1/2 acre or so). That said, if you had a 1/2 acre and mowed it once a week like my HOA demands, you'd probably need to replace the battery in 4-6 years. Now, if the warranty gives you a FREE replacement in those 5 years, cool, but if its like automotive, prorated, shipping cost, it might not be worth much towards a $400 battery replacement.
    Right now, gas it cheaper to operate for most folks, when you factor in one battery replacement over 10 years (and 10 years should be a reasonable longevity of a lawn mower). Thats almost the cost of a new lawn mower. So for $599 and another $450 and maybe $50 in electric bills over 10 years (to recharge the batteries), I would be looking at $1100 for electric mowing costs. I'd be looking at $499 (for a good Toro), or $599 Honda, $120 in gas (lets say it avg's $6.5/gallon over next 10 years), $30 in oil and maybe $30 in air filters (maybe 3 needed), and I am looking at $680 - $800 to operate a good SP gas mower. I just don't see the savings...for my smallish yard (1/5 acre). Less maintenance, but for me changing oil is all of a 10 minute ordeal every other year...nothing. Both would need to sharpen blades, so that's negated. The air filter, 5 minutes to take it out and tap it on the ground every month to knock dust off. Have to change it every 3 years or so.

Great mow experience...except that the motor stopped on my numerous times when it hit patches of heavy grass. I can see how older people would love the Ego. It's easy to push and the self-propelled feature was great on my hill...but it ate up battery life like crazy. Battery powered ones too many issues, like stalling or that plastic cooling fan the blade attaches to shattering every year while mowing a pebble.

It was heavy to pull back from trees and such. It wore me out. I researched mowers to death and nearly settled on a Craftsman gas mower, 140cc. It was very light but did not have ball bearing wheels. That's a deal breaker for me. I'm 60 and looking for comfort over the greatest cut there is. Honda gave an excellent cut...but it also added 10 minutes to my mow, even over my old MTD mower, due to the weight of the beast. With gas, that mower was over 100 pounds. First cut on the Ego took 35 minutes. My old MTD took 45 minutes. The Honda took 55 minutes.

      The battery is warrantied for 5 years. So if it did fail in 5 years, they give you another one. That give you a 10 year potential life of batteries. You might want a new mower anyways at that point, as technology marches forward. Second, you don't keep these batteries at a full charge - leave them about 1/2 way down until you need to use it again. They charge so quickly, just put it on the charger the night before if you like to mow early morning. Lithiums don't like to be stored at a high state and that is probably why people complain about them not lasting - they don't understand how these batteries work and thus just abuse them until they die.

    The Hydrostatic drive on a Honda will run circles around the Ego. Teaching a young grandson to mow its a no brainer with the Hydrostatic drive. Very adjustable at a very slow speed at a crawl and as he becomes more skilled with the machine he will easily gradually increases the speed. I use nothing but premium fuel as this keeps the carburetor clean with the increased fuel detergents in it. Also nothing but Mobil One oil in the machine. My old JX75 John Deere is going on 25 years now and to this day does not use any engine oil. My Honda HRX with hydrostatic drive is now over two years old and does its job and well. Kept my old John Deere and it still cuts like a champ and one pull start. Many things about the Honda were copied from the JX75. Honda could make their lawn mower even better if they would use a magnesium deck. As for the electric, from the first day one uses it the battery will start to decline in its charge rate. Heard many things about how they help the environment. How does a one mile wide hole by half a mile deep hole in the ground of habitat removed help the environment from Lithium mining ? Does one think the mining machines run on electric current ?

    long term cost is NOT "hands down" for battery power lawnmower. It may be saving money in SOME cases, but not in all and in my case it would cost more unless the battery lasts 8 years before needing replaced.
    I posted already, but if (should say, when) you have to buy a new 10Ah battery in say, 3 (high usage) to 7 years (lower usage), that is going to be roughly $500 or more (cost of lithium continues to go UP, not down, due to demand). I spend about $7/year in gas for the whole mowing season, thats like 25 mows (once a week for just over 5 months). I need just one 2.5 gallon container for the whole year and have to put what is left into my car in October. My costs over 10 years with my Toro PP SP mower (2011 model):
    $70 in gas (using a $3.30/gallon average cost, will be higher the next 10 years, so maybe $110 in gas).
    $20 in oil (changed every other year, less than a quart, at $4/qt, or $2/year)
    $30 in air filters (tap dirt out every 4 or 5 mows, replace it maybe every 3 years)
    $5 spark plug (changed it, didn't need to)
    so $125 over 10 years for me or $12.50 year
    One $450 battery blows that away for cost.
    Add in the (conservative) $3/year to charge the battery 15 or 20 times.
    You're looking at $480 over 10 years or $48/year in costs.
    Hands down, for me, yes, its cheaper to operate a gas mower, until/unless gas per gallon over 10 years equals the cost of a new lithium ion battery pack. So unless gas averages $20/gallon over the next 10 years, my 1/5 acre yard says gas is the way to save money.
    If I had 1/2 acre, okay, now I can see it getting close, but even at that, it'd cost me $25/year in gas at $4/gallon, so $250 in gas for a 1/2 acre over the past 10 years, and yeah, no doubt I would have had to bought another battery back 4 or 5 years into ownership if this (admittedly nice, but expensive) Ego mower was available in 2011.
    It's fair to make arguments for savings, but its just blurted out how electric saves you money. I never see anyone actually factor in battery costs/maintenance. I only need to do the math to see that it's not (yet) true, unless by some miracle the original battery last 10 years and still holds 60 or 70% of original charge (it won't).
    If you assume the original battery last 7 years and lower that true cost of the $450 battery to the prorated cost of 3 years (about $150), then we're pulling within $50 of the gas mower, still more costly, but within reason enough to consider switching.

    Just though I'd share my current experience & maybe it's a 1-off: but I'm frustrated as hell dealing with EGO: (Location GA:/grass type: Bermuda approx. 66oo sq. ft.) I bought the EGO 2130SP in Feb 2021, while I want to give it 5-Star rating (works great when it works). But EGO is getting 1-star from me. I've had a random problem of it not starting (in driveway) or stopping/stalling during a cut (and I'm not cutting overgrown grass here). It's not a battery issue, the battery works fine in the String Trimmer. Also, I can't simulate it at will. In Mar of 2022 I turn it over to an authorized dealer. They had it for 3 weeks and told me they could not find anything wrong with it (Note: it was returned to me very filthy, both mower and charger). Well, the same problem happened again at the end of the cutting season (yes, it ran all summer long in 90-degree heat). At the beginning of this season (2023) it did it again after 2 complete cuts. In APR/May it happened again these past 2 times I called EGO. I let them know I reported this same problem in the past, went through their scripted troubleshooting guide and it worked fine while they were on the phone. Hung up with them and guess what? It stalled again and would not start about 20 minutes into my cut, I finished with my gas mower. The following week it would NOT start again. Before calling EGO, I went through all the steps I from the previous week and it would NOT start on the driveway. I called EGO and of course, it works. This time I was able to finish my lawn (Bermuda, approx. 6600 sq. ft. Here 's my problem, I'm not calling EGO for no reason. It's under full warranty and there is something wrong with my mower. And I can guarantee it's not the typical wiring or relays found on youtube vids. As I said, this happen to me in 2022 and I waited to double triple check to be sure it was not some silly operator error. 1) Charge battery (all green lights) 2) slide into slot (be sure it clicks in place) 3) fully push start button and pull bail switch. The light on the handle shows solid "orange light" while battery lights are fully green. The mower nor the battery is hot and I'm not even in the grass at times when it shuts down or simply does not start. There is no way it's a load issue and be acceptable as working under normal conditions. I follow the 1/3 rule of cutting. I've replayed this info to the EGO reps several times. This should be more than enough info to turn it in. Yet, I can't get them to authorize a real tech to figure out the issue or simply replace it. But then what...I'm out of a mower I paid $600+ for another three weeks possibly. It's a good thing I held on to my 15 yr. old gas mower. WTF!!! Currently, I'm looking for a lawn mower of my daughter. Her house sits on about 1/2 acre of mixed grasses and weeds, and lot of leaves in the fall. I'm thinking about purchasing her the Honda HRX217VKA w/GCV200 engine. The problem is I'm 90 minutes away and I am the mechanical dad. I never realized my girls never cut the lawn it was always my son. At least until the other day when she was visting and she asked to cut the grass. I have no idea how they got away with that. LOL

    Considered an electric when replacing a 15 year old Craftsman with B&S engine this year. The Ego was the clear choice among the electric. Run time between charges and the battery cost was the deal breaker. I couldn't mow my lawn on a single charge, even with the Ego 10Ah, which costs $450 for the battery alone. I'd need two 10Ah batteries and that would just barely provide enough energy. For the cost of a 10Ah Ego battery I got a Honda HRN216VKA. Starts on one pull. Mows entire lawn on less than a tank of fuel, has plenty of power and mulches magnificently, even if the grass is tall. A $600 electric plus $450 battery vs a $450 Honda was a no-brainer. And an estimated battery life of five years? I use *less* than 7.5 gallons per year in the mower. Oil change is 12 oz, less than a half quart (many never change the oil - for 10-15 years - just add a little when needed - not good, but not a killer). Filters are dirt cheap and change in a matter of seconds. Spark plugs last forever. Put STA-BIL in the gas when filling the can and never worry about winter storage. A quart of STA-BIL has lasted almost 20 years - with a mower and snow blower. Always starts in Spring. Owning a gasser isn't that hard - maintenance is very minimal - do that and store it in a shed or garage out of the weather and it will run for many years.
    Those touting "green" with electric mowers must consider the pollutants created in Nanjing China making the Ego mower - especially the batteries - and the oil consumed making the plastic there. China is the worst polluter on the planet (they don't care one iota). What happens with the battery when it has worn out? I daresay 99.99% toss it into the trash and off to the landfill it goes - along with every other battery of every type (except lead acid automotive). Human behavior at its finest. Then comes the electricity generated to recharge the battery. The overwhelming methods of electricity generation are coal, oil and gas fired turbines. All battery powered mowers and cars do is shift the fossil fuel consumption point - and create a battery disposal nightmare. FWIW, Honda mowers are made in North Carolina under EPA pollution regulations.

    Went through 2 carburetors on my Honda HRX due to constant engine surging. Called Honda and they say they are not responsible for fuel quality problems because of the low grade gas I am putting through it. What??? Sorry Honda, but you need to build a machine that runs on the fuel I have available to me. I’m not going to import gasoline from another country to power my mower. I buy non-ethanol fuel that a local gas station sells for boaters. I ended up selling it last year and purchased the EGO select cut. Yes, it has slightly less suction but with the high lift blade it is pretty close. The convenience of electric over leaky, oily and smelly string trimmers, blowers and mowers has made me love cutting the grass again. They are also very quiet which makes them pleasant to use. You don’t realize how noisy a gas mower is until you go electric.

    • @Mr-Chris
      @Mr-Chris  3 года назад +1

      I'm on the fence about this. I like both. Sorry you had the issue with the Honda surging. Hypothetically, I bet I could help you figure out the problem and fix it. Most likely the idle jet clogged up. I tried other gas mowers and Hondas are the best, but they still have regular issues like you mentioned before. Right now, I wish I had an EGO, I have regular maintenance cuts and I don't need all that extra power from Honda. I know the EGO with the high lift blade is awesome, However during the early cutting season and late cutting season including the Fall leaves, Honda outperforms EGO. Hopefully someone puts out an electric mower that obliterates gas all together.

      @@Mr-Chris I agree with you Chris and thanks for the reply. I used my neighbors Toro gas mower with a brand new Atomic blade that I helped him put on, and WOW, that thing sucked up everything....even wet leaves. The problem is EGO's blades (even the high lift blade) are designed to minimize drag and do not have the same aggressive pitch on it that the gas mower blades do which is why they don't have the same airflow. But there are some people who are fitting aftermarket blades on the EGO with good results albeit with reduced runtime. The EGO select-cut 2020 version I have has only a 1000w motor and using a gas mower blade will cause the motor to kick up to high speed and drain the battery. For 2021 there is a new select-cut XP model that has a 1200w motor and a huge 10AH battery which I believe would handle a more aggressive blade much better. I did enjoy using my Honda mower for many years and you are right, Honda builds a great machine. Still, I'm considering an EGO lawnmower. I like the fact that it can be stored vertically, to not take up the entire floor of my shed, and most importantly, I like that it is quiet, so I could listen to my podcast while mowing, without having to turn up the sound in my headset to hearing damaging levels. I've had my current lawnmower for more than ten years, and I don't winterize it, I've never changed the oil, or cleaned the underside--and I only have to fill the gas every 4-5 mows. So the EGO would probably be a little more maintenance work (having to remove the battery and charge it after every use).

    You nailed this review… For Ego to match the ICE commercial mowers they need to match the RPM of gas for a cleaner cut at above 3,200 RPM.
    The only Ego mower that comes close is the Ego Steel deck at 3,000 RPM unloaded. All the other Ego mowers are as low as 2,700 RPM.
    The other feature of the steel deck is that it comes closer to a quality commercial Hondas torque, not by being more powerful in the motor, but ithe deck is smaller than the plastic decks, thus increasing torque at the blades by reducing the diameter but using the same motor.
    I have modified my Ego steel deck to a twin blade system and it’s as close as you can get to a commercial mower cut. Come on Ego - you need to live up to your marketing “as good as a combustion mower” 🤣
    Ego - don’t discontinue the steal deck as it’s the only decent mower you have. Or perhaps improve the “Select-Cut” with a minimum of 3,200rpm unloaded and and with at least 15% more torque 😉

The ego I bought came with 2 extra blades, one for bagging and another for an extended run time. But the Honda you can get great mulching and bagging with the same set.

    One tank of gas can get me through almost all of my lawn .....
    I would burn through a dozen batteries !?!??
    Until there is a better ( solid state ) battery coming , an electric mower on a hilly lawn is not even an option !
    The weight of my mower is heavy, but I can pull sideways on a slope and it doesn't hop, skip, and jump down the hill.
    I even had a lighter weight Honda with 1 fixed speed that was too fast and slid sideways at times when cutting.
    Let's put the electrics through some really hard tests and stop babying them so they come out looking great for Everybody .....
    Also , isn't an Ego replacement battery expensive ...????
