I played goal all of my life up until about five years ago. I'm 60 now. I never could get into the butterfly position no matter how much I stretched or tried lol. I really wanted to be able to get into this position but I couldn't. I used the Tony Esposito stance and I was a left-hander too like him. The style of goaltending now in the NHL is much more efficient and effective than it was when I was growing up playing. Much more fun to watch now too
I played roller and street hockey when I was a kid and butterfly wasn't a thing. I just started playing again at the ripe old age of 45. Butterfly was definitely daunting. I can't tell you how many times I dropped to my knees and landed on the flat face of my pads.😂😂😂😂 I just kept looking up videos and trying different strapping techniques for my pads and eventually I got it. Now it's like second nature to drop into the butterfly.
goaltending has improved more in the past 25 years than have any of the other positions. i believe the reason for that is the development of modern goalie techniques and increased athleticism. if you don't believe me, watch a hockey game from the early 1990's. A lot of the goals they score would have you scratching your head if modern goaltenders gave the up today.
Marty Brodeur showed me that stopping the puck means you do anything possible to keep it from going past you, meaning Butterfly isn't always effective.
In the image at 0:42 it shows a blocking butterfly on the left where the stick blade is angled off the ice... Is it supposed to be like this or should the blade be flat?
+Matthew Reardon Hi Matt. In a blocking butterfly, the stick should be out in front of you, on the ice but at an angle so it creates a ramp for pucks that are shot straight on to pop up into your belly where you can smother them.
+Bill Ladd Thanks, Bill! It looks like in that picture at 0:42 that the toe of his blade is off the ice enough to let a puck under.. but maybe it's just the angle of the camera...
Yeah angled will direct the puck to the boards and away from the net or to your belly. Holding it flat will have a high chance of giving up juicy rebounds
If u drop down when someone shoots, it's most likely they will score. Wait to see where the puck is going, and then u make your move. And keep your eye on the puck until you stop it. ;)
this hybrid thing (vh position) is not good as you can see. standing in the angle the camera stands you can see plenty open space. good shooters will shot through the gap between your head and post
It's not any different in the stance or the butterfly. There is gonna be open space unless you are Ben Bishop big. If a good shooter beats you with a good shot can you really feel bad about it? Shorter guys like me (5'9) are not gonna be able to get the entire top of the net. We just have to hope we're fast enough to react and snag/block/chip it away before it gets there.
David Cupp i am 6`3" but what i meant is that you are creating open space that would be blocked in an other position yourself if you use the VH in the wrong place. and that in my opinion is what this guy does. if the shooter is standing where the camera does you can see that the shooter can easily shoot "around" you far post.
+klauskarlkraus The VH is only meant to protect wrap arounds from the back of the net while using your vertical posted leg to push off and shift to the otherside of the net when puck carrier moves to other post. If the puck is in front of the goal line than VH should not be used.
On your blocker side while executing the one knee up one knee down , how can you get rid of that hole in the corner ? I get caught on that hole a lot.. Especially in AAA when your in a tournament and you lose cause of that large hole
I think todays style of goal tending is awful and ugly, goalies donr know how to make kick saves cant cover the post dont know how to poke check (Johnny Bower) the have quick gloves but the fundamentals are all wrong!!!!!!!! lay down and forget the top corners!!
I’m the Qatar national team goalkeeper, and I would like to thank you for this video that I’ve watched 10 years ago early in my career.
This style is getting more and more old school by the season!

I think this is great. this really helps my son who plays goalie for the EYH
Great video for new goalies!

And the gear
Equipment producer have adapted their gear to the goalies. Not the other way around
this must be at the super Schwann rink in Minnesota, I notice the colors in the back, played on this rank a few times
1:54 Killer 90’s hockey mullet dude
This High Bread set up is interesting.
Hybrid sir ;)
Marty Brodeur showed me that stopping the puck means you do anything possible to keep it from going past you, meaning Butterfly isn't always effective.
Jerry A make vid and ii'l belive u
the trainer looks like roberto luongo
Ceddesokk Zach Sikich?
Yeah but how do I stop it from going in?
Brings back memory's the first time I tried butterfly drop I fell back words and it hurt like crap
2:58 that neck guard is super wide
Baker's Bread I noticed that. It’s huge.
why does he keep saying "high-bread"?
He's actually saying hybrid, And hybrid is a type of goaltending style.
Evan Wakelin No, he’s saying High Bread.

Yeah I was talking about the top corner

Hate to break this to you but unless you have inhuman reflexes when shots get faster you need to drop earlier
You pretty much can play goalie from the ice now
nice vid thank you
Anyone have any streches to practice this because I am not flexible enough to do this. It is so frustrating!!
Search for GoalieTrainingProTv, or Jordan Bent
Can you make some more goaltender vids it would be a big help
Check out Maria Mountain
how do i widen my butterfly.
Yoga.
Lol

klauskarlkraus Well I mean in that circumstance me personally wouldnt use the VH to combat that angle.
klauskarlkraus If you use the VH correctly, that won't happen. Also there is no other effective way to combat those angles for butterfly goalies.
+klauskarlkraus The VH is only meant to protect wrap arounds from the back of the net while using your vertical posted leg to push off and shift to the otherside of the net when puck carrier moves to other post. If the puck is in front of the goal line than VH should not be used.
I think of somebody like the Dominator for this
On your blocker side while executing the one knee up one knee down , how can you get rid of that hole in the corner ? I get caught on that hole a lot.. Especially in AAA when your in a tournament and you lose cause of that large hole
Buy pads with a bigger toe
and make sure u lock your heal to the post
Joel B I think he's talking about the top corner that gets covered by the glove on the other side. I am also curious as to how that can get covered.
Logan Beaudoin
use your head ;)
organizedsolid My god xD
Fuck butterfly, I've pulled my groin like twice.
stretch more
Not enough training.
Pulling your groin is just a part of the style and position. Try yoga.
stretch then more DRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
How do you pull you're groin on butterfly, I could see if you were doing the splits
Could hardly hear it
It never happened but i just wanna prevent that habit from starting
Hi
3:21 :D
Yeah
hi
High Bread. Hmm.
nets in the NHL are too small.
no then it would be easy to score
andrew tuttle yep goalies job is already the hardest in the nhl
The Goalie Club is way better than those guys!
I think todays style of goal tending is awful and ugly, goalies donr know how to make kick saves cant cover the post dont know how to poke check (Johnny Bower) the have quick gloves but the fundamentals are all wrong!!!!!!!! lay down and forget the top corners!!
This is all wrong the blocking butterfly is wrong
