Here's just two of your other videos that helped me out. Recovering from a groin injury. I jumped into a clinic last night for the first time in a month since I injured myself. Not 100% fit for sure, injuries at my age will take longer, but it felt really good and I and thank you for your recovery series for that. Second video was the Tydan skate profile. The six months I have been out there, I've tried to figure out what to improve. Discovered I'm a toe pusher when it comes to the butterfly. I took the Tydan profile survey and I got to try out my new SAM 10/50/27 blades at the clinic last night. Wow, what a difference! Pushing in the butterfly is so much easier. Standing in the crease feels more natural. Shuffling across the crease is easier, I'm not fighting it. Lastly, my backward skates are easier and faster. I surprised myself on one drill when I collided with the crossbar, I had no idea I could pop backwards so much quicker with this profile. Great stuff, looking forward to more videos.

Glad to help - don't give up. Learning is tough, it takes time, be gentle with yourself. Although advanced, it’s important you learn a couple things on top of this. When pushing, keep your lead leg out. Assume this is your butterfly:/\ A lot of the time, new goalies will look, turn push (as you had shown), and as they turn, (pushing left on their right leg) their butterfly will turn into this |\, keep it at /\ and push with the leg out. You also need to lead with the foot so when you push, the ice has the coverage of the leg. Because leading with the knee like |\ will cause an open net.
Yes, totally right this is something that even higher level goalies struggle with - definitely a great addition once they can get into that butterfly and move a little bit. Thanks!
I'm in my first full year as a goalie (just turned 46) I'm not very good at my butterfly movements yet. I try to take advantage of the moments during the game when it's quiet to practice my movements ... it's hard to have ice time. We must take advantage of the time we have.
Hi, Maria, very good video. Can you please do one on the difference in technique between the VH and RVH? For pucks behind the net, I like to VH (meaning if the puck is behind me to the right, my right pad is up against the post, with my stick flush to stop pucks from being centered, and my left pad is horizontal). I find it easier to then quickly push to my left, since my weight is already on my right leg. Most NHL goalies, however, play the RVH where the right pad is horizontal and flush on the ice - how do they then load up on that leg and push across? Thank you.
That is one of the things I am working on now too - getting more consistent at moving post to post from the RVH. If you watch Lehner (not sure if he still does it) he will VH on one side and RVH on the other because it feels more comfortable for him. Great idea for my video list though - thank you.
Honest, this video will give you some good tips - but playing goalie is totally different and it will take time to figure it out, so just go out there and have fun. Don't think too much, just stop the puck. Let me know how it goes.

What are good guidelines for how tight/loose our pads should be? I'm a 30 yr old beginner and my right pad doesn't always rotate, maybe I have it too tight? Thanks yall
I don't have any guidelines, I just mess around with them until they feel right, but I agree if your pad is over-rotating (like you are landing on the face of your pad when you go to your knees), then I would try loosening them off - - and your toe tie as well. If you use a skate lace for your toe tie and you don't have an knots tied in it to give you some slack, that is the first place I would look.
Hi! Thanks for this awesome video! I’m 32 y.o. beginner goalie who switched to it from playing D (usually) Two questions: where can I find the link to the butterfly 14-day programme? If my pads overrotate and I some times land on the “face side” of the pad, can the problem be in the toe tie which is like super tight?
Amazing - welcome to the goalie union! I hope you have a blast. The link to the Butterfly Challenge is here - bit.ly/butterflyYT Regarding the pad over rotating - YES - it definitely could be due to the toe tie being too tight. The next thing I would look at would be my pad straps around my legs. For which part of the blade you push off, it depends on the movement you are trying to make - sometimes it's toe, sometimes heel and sometimes middle. It will also depend a little on your ankle mobility.

It sure is harder than it looks. These exercises will help. Remember to brace with your abdominals and squeeze the glute on the side you are sliding TOO. Be patient with yourself
Correct - I am a exercise physiologist and I specialize in training goalies, thus "goalie training"... I am not a goalie coach, that's why my channel isn't called "goalie coaching" 😂
Well my issue is that you do not show how to extend you pads upfront as to cover most of the width of the nets like pros do. I realized lately that you do not have to extend ur legs to the sides but push ur legs (the bottom parts) to the front so the pads spread in the width. You do not show how to do this and I think it is a major move to stop shots
I think you are talking about having a wider butterfly? Or are you talking about holding that wide flare when you are in your butterfly? If it is the first one, then click the link to the Butterfly Challenge in the description. If it is the second option, that is a bit beyond this video. The purpose of this video is to help beginners who literally have trouble even dropping into their butterfly and trouble moving from their butterfly. But might be a good topic for another video.

I get emails sometimes from goalies who are in their late 70s or early 80s! You might have a little ways to go yet Grant, but you are very welcome!
👌
I'm 36 just started playing. I need help with basically everything. My biggest thing is 5 hole and making a save and not moving with the play. I freeze
It takes time to put it all together - so be patient with yourself. What about your 5-hols is a problem - you don't get it closed?
As a new goalie on ice, pushing on/from one foot and slide is a lot harder than it looks. I can't even move 😂
It sure is harder than it looks. These exercises will help. Remember to brace with your abdominals and squeeze the glute on the side you are sliding TOO. Be patient with yourself
The one thing I need help I'd some times when I go to butterfly or rvh or vh I land on face of pads I need help stop that
What kind of toe tie do you use - a lace or a bungee? Landing on the face of your pad is more an adjustment issue than technique.
@@goalietraining I use pro laces bungee how do I solve me from landing on face I have longer straps
@@michaelchorney3793 hmmmmm - - the bungee should help - have you tried loosening your straps on your pads so they have a little room to flop around?
Thise pads trippy af. They skinny as h3ll
Just standard Intermediate pads. Intermediate pads are an inch (I think) narrower than senior pads.
I love the videos but you said you’re not a goalie coach but the channel name is goalie training 😂
@@goalietraining I did download the program, read it and watched our videos...looking forward to start it tomoro..ON QUESTION THOUGH: when we complete the 14 days, i assume we can carry it on for more flexibility
@@rolandbouchat7462 Beauty - have a blast - - and YES, you can continue beyond the 14 days, you will get diminishing returns, but you will see progress.
What if you are a stand up, like me
Then you don't need to butterfly ;)
@@goalietraining - well I'm old school - 30 years in the crease. I play a hybrid game.
@@have2poopoo Awesome - then some of these exercises will help.
@@goalietraining - Women know how to break it down, but most are 80% butterfly and 20% standup, it should be 50/50.
I'll bet you a pair of leg pads, watch any goal these days and you'll see it's 45% top shelf
@@kingchrisepoo that's right, as goalies get better at taking away the bottom of the net, the shooters get better scoring in the top of the net. When goalies get better at stopping those shots the skaters will find another way to score. It is a great game of cat and mouse.
It's not HOW to Do,it's- look how i can sit in butterfly . How sit on knees and turn feets out?or yuo think it can everybody to do?
Yes, everyone can do it. Not every one will have a wide flare, but everyone can get on their knee stacks.
@@goalietraining will do it,may be.But now i can not sit on knees and put heels on floor.it's possibly when i'm liеуng on stomach only.
I got my daughter to use the boards to push off until she got use to it
great idea!
