    NAVAJO TACOS RECIPE (*adapted from House of Nash Eats: houseofnasheats.com/navajo-ta...)
    Indian Fry Bread
    2 cups flour
    2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
    1 tsp. salt
    1 cup warm water
    Taco mix
    1 tbsp. oil
    1/2 yllow onion diced
    1 lb. ground beef
    1/4 cup taco seasoning mix
    1 15 oz. can dark red kidney beans - drained and rinsed
    1 14.5 oz can petite diced tomatoes
    1 4 oz. can diced green chilies
    4-8 tbsp vegetable oil (to use for frying the bread, use as needed)
    Toppings (to your preference)
    We used:
    Sour cream
    Diced Tomatoes
    Shredded lettuce
    Sliced black olives
    Pico de gallo
    Fry bread instructions: In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the warm water and mix using a fork until a dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes, then transfer to a clean bowl and cover tightly in plastic wrap. Let the dough rest for 10 minutes.
    Divide the dough into 8 equal sections by pinching off golf-ball sized balls of dough, then pat and roll out the dough balls into roughly 6-inch discs on a lightly floured surface. Keep them covered with plastic wrap while you prepare to fry them.
    To fry the bread, set griddle to medium heat. Pour 3-4 tbsp. oil. Once hot (a wisp of white smoke will let you know it's ready), place the fry bread in the oil. Continue to cook until the bottom is golden brown. Once to desired color, flip and cook the second side to the same color. Continue for all fry bread.
    *We cooked the meat before the fry bread.
    Bring griddle to med/low, and cook ground beef in 1 tbsp. of oil, chopping and cooking until browned and in very small pieces (ground beef for tacos). Once browned, pour in the taco seasoning mix, and continue cooking an additional 3-4 minutes until the meat is properly seasoned.
    In a large skillet, heat 1 tbsp. oil over medium-low heat, then add the onions and cook for 2-3 minutes, just until they begin to soften.
    Add kidney beans, tomatoes, and chilies, and decrease the heat to low. Add in the ground beef, and stir everything together, continuing to let simmer. Use to top Indian fry bread for Navajo tacos. Pile the meat high, and top with your favorite toppings, enjoy!

      Fry bread will puff a little more and have a lighter, softer texture, with more oil, we usually deep fry it, but if you were to use a skillet and a little deeper oil, maybe a 1/4 inch, or a little more, you could certainly do it on the BS. Night Guys!!!

    • @drwgisblaidd2650
      @drwgisblaidd2650 3 года назад

      @@waltwins I think you can, might take a little bit to heat up, but Blackstone's seem to run a little hot anyway, I'd go with a carbon steel wok, it'll heat up pretty quickly, be slightly narrower at the base, so not quite so much oil, but still stable, and still with a nice size frying area, and cheap as chips at Walmart. Or if your deep fryer has a removeable insert pan like mine does, just toss it on the BS, and you can even use the frying basket....🤠

    A) I love the B-roll video editing and how you worked it in with the chosen music!
    B) The squeeze sour cream is the best invention ever! I've just started buying it myself and there's less chance of it being bad by the time I want to use it.
    C) I can't imagine browning ground beef on any surface other than a griddle. I've done taco seasoning in my meat a couple of times now. I do like to add a generous squirt of water to the meat and seasoning just to help the seasoning coat the meat.

    Oh my goodness, brothers. We are so in sync. I am working in the Grand Canyon this summer and I tried Navaho tacos for the first time a couple weeks ago. They were fantastic. And my first thought was, I can do this on my griddle. I have not attempted them yet, but they are in my near future plans. I have debated whether to shallow fry (griddle fry) the fry bread or go traditional and put a tin pan on the griddle and fry in that with a couple inches of oil. The recommendations from locals is to try that method, but I will see. You guys continue to inspire and cook my kind of food. When I do the cook, I will send you pictures.

    • @waltwins
      @waltwins  3 года назад +2

      Thank you so much fam!! Oh for sure! Since this cook I have actually thought about seeing if I could get a couple of inches in a frying pan on the Blackstone hot enough in a decent amount of time. If I can, we may revisit this showing the “real” method - the shallow fry worked, but we know we could get a more consistent fry in a deeper oil cook. Take care brother and GRIDDLE ON!🔥🔥🤙🤙 - we had the opportunity to hike the Grand Canyon as scouts Rim to Rim - one of the best experiences of our lives!
