Larnell Lewis, the drummer, learned the songs for this session on the plane while flying to the UK for this recording.

    • @Thrill0g
      @Thrill0g 5 месяцев назад +4

Not entirely true - this was recorded in Utrecht, Holland - but it's true that Larnell had less than 48 hours to learn the tunes for this record (We Like It Here), which wasn't even fleshed out at the time. That's just how M. League works, I guess - "let's just all sit down, play and see where it takes us".

The rest of the band had been rehearsing a few days before Larnell got the call.. he was playing by the seat of his pants.. and killed it @@Thrill0g

You have arrived. Welcome to the world with Larnell Lewis! Best song in 5/4 ever! Larnell learned these songs on the plane, overnight.

He'd played with Snarky Puppy before, he knew a few songs already, including this one, but he did have to learn the rest on the plane over. They did run through everything prior to rolling tape. Watch the documentary. Still, that doesn't take anything away from his performance, which was outstanding.

The keys solo was Cory Henry, and his performance here is beyond words. He seems to be taken over at points by some supernatural spirit of music. And you're right, Larnell Lewis is amazing. They're having him on Drumeo now and then. You know Drumeo...right? :)
Great reaction, Lee, as always! Rock on!

The thing that kills me most is Larnell keeping that kick drum ostinato going that whole solo section as he plays more and complex stuff on the rest of the kit. As cool as the keyboard solo is, that level of limb independence is very impressive to me. Check out their tune with Jacob Collier, and their Empire Central sessions as well.
If you like Mahavishnu, check out "New York on my Mind" by John Mclaughlin. Some great drumming on that, and just an amazing tune all around.

Larnell Lewis, drums, is out of this world, a complete beast 🔥
Check out some more of his stuff, solo and otherwise…
And yeah, Snarky Puppy are on a whole new level with their performance and listening concept, and with their brand of fusion…..
Another fusion trio I’d like to recommend is Dirty Loops.
Originally hailing from Sweden, they again have transformed fusion in a whole new way.
Rock/jazz/funk(!)/RnB/ and everything else you can think of.
Link to one of their tracks below, featuring a KILLER drum solo 🔥🔥🔥
    Cheers ✌️🙏🤘

I love the back and forth between the sax and trumpet solos. I know it's basically required for this kind of music, but anyone could hear that they're listening to what the other is doing and responding. Like, that's normal in jazz, but as a non-musician, I can't always recognize those moments easily. But there, basically anyone can tell they're playing off what the other is doing.
And then there's that goddamned keyboard solo. That solo is absolutely magic. I'm convinced that it'll go down in history as having influenced generations of musicians. Cory Henry is an absolute beast.
And Larnell Lewis is an absolute monster on drums. His style fits so well with Snarky Puppy. He's an absolute beast on drums and has an incredible sense of musicality that is so on display in this, considering how little time he had to put together his drum parts for this session.

This studio recording with audience was in Holland and the drummuer canceled it short before...Larnell get the invitation and due the flight from USA to Holland he "learnd and made drums concept' in his head...came 2 days after that band was already in studio and preform like a God! There are a lot of videos from this live session - each of them is one masterpiece! Highly recommend! And keep you eyes and ears on Larnell... incredible.
Also interesting: Larnell was on drumeo and for the first time in his life heard Enter Sandman from Metalica...then he played it! WOW...Next level of drumer quality! Must see... Enjoy! And yes! It is normal after first time hearing Snarky Puppy to get there is also some another level of music quality 😉

Great selection Lee. This has become one of my all time favorite performances on YT. Can't count how many times I've returned to this particular video. Top notch production, incredible performances, great composition and on and on. Glad you liked it - and it just keeps getting better the more you watch. (BTW Corey Henry, the synth soloist here, has his own band called The Apostles of Funk. Good fun). Next Snarky song? Shokufan from the same album. And good luck on the job interview!

Yo, loved your review. I can tell you are a music lover. Metal, fusion, whatever. I am on old dude 69 but I grew up on the beginning of fusion. Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy Cobham, Return to Forever. And so on. I appreciate your assessment over recognizing fusion which has different elements of music in the mix. I just joined your channel. My discernment tells me you are a metalhead. I grew with all the greats in that also. You may broaden your musical pallet as you age. Much success for your channel. God bless you brother

Their regular drummer couldn't make it. Larnell learned the songs on the flight arriving 2 hours before the first session. Every video labeled We Like It Here is both live and the studio version. This is how the album was recorded. Silver headphones are the audience. Red are the musicians.
Bassist Michael League is the guy in charge. He is behind a couple of David Crosby's final albums.
This entire album is fire. This is the closer. Corey Henry on the truly legendary synth solo. He is also a drummer and singer and possibly plays other instruments as well.
