Spyke Sucked And That's Okay

- Despite the title I love Spyke as a character he's actually my fav from the show but in the first season of X-Men Evolution Spyke just kinda sucks as he barley grows as a character. But trust me when I say this in future seasons of X-Men Evolution Spyke gets so much better and its his growth from season one to the end of the show that makes it worth it. But for now it just feels like they did not know what to do with his character since he was completely original for the show.

Marrow he is a rip off power wise of marrow don’t know why I said he’s a rip off of himself my bad
I was like, “is there a spike in the 616 X-Universe that I didn’t know about?”
They really should've used Marrow instead.
I heard that the original plan was just to make Iceman black instead of making a new character
They did not even know about Marrow when they stared but the also made a Wolverine clone, they just didn't use him properly
no hes not, its common to have the same powers there are dozens of telepaths
I hope we get an analysis of Wolverine from this show soon, it's so good to see him in a healthy dynamic with the rest of the X Men as well as actually acting his age and providing mentorship for the team.
Yeah definitely one of my favorite versions with one of the best costumes of his as well. He was just awesome in this series.
@@mandalorianhunter1This suit is a solid second favorite, the first of course goes to the brown and yellow suit. Kinda bummed out that he stopped wearing the cowl and fit later in the series, but it did show how more accepting he was of working as a team and how well he fit in with the X-Men.
@@thomasdeen2099 I honestly loved seeing Logan without the cowl, it was nice. Yeah I understand that it wasn't for everyone
I could see Deadpool and Wolverine's take on the character turning into an x men evolution esque wolverine.
@mandalorianhunter1 I would've liked him to swap between tbf
I really wish Spike was brought into comics just like X-23. Sad that he has been forgotten...
He was my first black teen x man because they whitewashed sunspot slowly and bishop was both far too old and not my style all I really had to relate to was nightcrawler because people judged how he looked differently
Spyke was the goat and I shall tolerate no disrespect.
Yes
Like Venxous said, this criticism is levied at season 1.
He is not cringe like Kamla Khan, Riri Williams or Comic Miles.
Fax
I remember he was cool as hell growing up watching the show
Ironically unlike Spike who was in many episodes X-23 who was only in a couple of episodes and was also created for the series became very popular.
I mean, the exploding bone shards and then increase a physical bulk of the armor is a definite, cool power he look like he’s like ultimate humungasaur
it's a shame they did nothing with his character in the later series
They did the morlock thing but he had to underground for a while 😢
I honestly thought he was cool and nice concept of actually being related to a senior X-Men. He had to live up to his aunt while also making sure he was good enough to stay so his parents wouldn't take him away.
Him going with the you know who was like a call back to Storm joining them as their leader.
Spyke desreves to be brought back in the near future.
I would love that but it's to be someone that takes him serious this time
He was in X men 3 where he fought wolverine in the forest
X-Men Evolution was my favourite X-Men show growing up and honestly I enjoyed Spike as a character in the show, granted his inclusion was as a result of the lack of diversity in the team which I can understand. I liked that they made Spike Storms nephew and his rivalry with Quicksilver. Though I do think his character was good in the first couple seasons but I do kinda prefer when they had Spike join the Morlocks in Season 3 after his mutation gets worse as I feel like that dynamic of him feeling like a monster among fellow mutants who can't change what they like look like made more sense for a character like Spike after we see his powers permanently cover his body
Every Xmen team should have a young teen that represents the time live and learn what it means to be an xmen. The 90s had Jubilee and the 00s had Spyke. And I loved Spyke as a kid, he was so cool. I would’ve loved to see more of him.
Kitty Pryde is the "official substitute" for Jubilee I guess
Xmen legends had Magma or ehatever her name was. Dam I loved that game.
@@JooMarra you’re right, she’s also a 2000s kid and the main preteen rep.
He was created because there were a lot of young African-American boys who were fans of the X-Men but very few characters that reflected that background in the X-Men. And he was always going to be an original character, because apparently they didn’t know there was a Marvel villain named Armadillo at first or that Marrow even existed. The thing about Spyke is that he’s the only member of the Evo X-Men who just gets to be “a kid” and go through the standard “kid” character arc of learning to accept responsibility. Every other character’s got angst about their powers or their appearance or their family situation. And, as cliche as it was, it was kind of refreshing to have a character whose main thing was “Ugh! I just want to goof off and go skateboarding, but unfortunately I’ve got these stupid bone spike powers”.
There was an Episode about an African Witch Doctor who Hypnotizes Storm and Spyke is the one who notices and has ALOT of Concern over his Aunt! And by the end, he’s the one who Saves her after spending so much time training with Wolverine!
He was cool, but he was done dirty by the writers.
Originally Iceman is going to be the sixth member of the group but Spike was included due to diversity.
Honestly I’m cool with that since Bobby basically became a member in the last 2 seasons
"InClUdEd dUe To DiVeRsItY"
-🤡
Do you know actually know that or you just a saltine just using a buzzword Like how y'all typically do
Cry about it
He's not? He's a great addition that isn't forced because he was a new character, and didn't race swap or make gay.
Xmen is about diversity generally
I'm more pissed they didn't make Storm a teen
So we could get her and Jean as best friends
I think Spyke is a underrated Character in the series The series did little to develope him and he only got better in the season 4.
Spyke is one of my Favorite X-Men Characters,He deserves more attention.
Yeah
The only reason X23 is popular and not Spike is one has Wolverine connection
Looking back I always thought there was something special about Evan that I couldn't really put my finger on. Watching this video I realised something- Evan is one of the only characters to know what a mutant is before he got his powers. He possibly knew about mutants his entire life since his parents know Ororo is one. It feels like he views his mutation and the institute in a more mundane way than the rest of the cast. If this was explored I think it could've made his character a lot more interesting. Focusing on Evan's opinion on what being a mutant is and what that means for his life, and how that grows and changes.
Also the other week I realised that he's basically the love child of Storm and Wolverine and now I can't unsee it.
But he had a skateboard in the early 2000's of course he was cool.
But seriously I enjoyed him well enough
True lmao
I liked Spyke specially the episode were he is driking that juice.
Wasn't it an energy drink
@@diamonshade7484 Well yes, but I couldn't remember so just called it a juice, appreciate the reminder tho, now I can look for this episode.
Damn I love Spike and his dynamic with storm
Before watching, in his defense, Spyke was literally the youngest kid in the group.
Ok, now to watch the video! This should be interesting.
Dude trust I love spkye he’s just not as great in the first season as in others lol
Tbh I enjoyed Spike the most out of the "Black Teen Superhero" archetypes.
Spike was pretty chill, had a dope personality and where they took the character was really interesting. You don't usually see philosophical teen superheroes often or at all. The fact Spike saw reason enough for him to stay with the undergeound mutants when he mutates further is dope.
I'd love to see him brought into PROPER comic canon, maybe as a Xmen faction in Africa or leading the underground mutants. They tried once but the character was never really him💀
Also you should probably at Season 1 to the title so people don't assume its his entire character. He's an original character in a VERY old IP, so its gonna take time to become comfortable with him to understand how he fit in
This show is how I found out about him and I always wanted more of this version,he had some depth to his character in This show. Being black we didn’t have many representation back then vs how we do now I always liked spike was thankful they gave us spike.
He only existed in the show.
@@theparadox112793 they did add him to the comics, but with a re-design so he's not really recognizable as the same character.
There was no mention of when he mutated so much that he could to suppress his spikes and wore a hard spiked shell. And because of said mutation, left the Xmen to join a band of underground mutants living in the sewers.
He and Scott were my favorites, both character wise and powers
I do like Spike, honestly would love for him to get a rework. If X Men evolution were remade I'd still want him back.
Don't disrespect my energetic porcupine boi like that. He is not Kamala Khan, Riri Williams, Comic Miles Morales(Existing just to be a shadow of Ultimate Peter Parker).
Spyke Cam was also my favorite episode and also when the girls made a temporary team up to fight crimes.
I remember the episode were spike was failing in school and losing control of his powers and decided to join/found a seperate group of misfit x-men. It’s one of the few episodes that I remember as a kid.
He was my favorite X Men Evolution character
Was Spike an entirely new character? I watched the 90s animated series last year and could have sworn Storm had a nephew in that version too. That nephew had speed powers though, and he wasn’t called Spike. I just assumed that they changed up the character’s powers for the later series because they already had plans to include Pietro, and then added the nickname to make the character "cooler."
I will always love the one sided rivalry he had with Quicksilver
I like what they did with that making him Storm’s nephew in the show.
I thought spyke was ok, but he was easily the weakest of the main cast
Honestly the only point he got interesting was when he became a morlock, but that was so incredibly underused
Also yes, his watching jean in the shower bit was creepy
You have a little botch at 13:07 but yeah I agree, spyke is pretty sidelined but the later seasons build him up really really nice
Thoughts on the depiction of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in this show?
I like Quicksilver in this show, but not scarlet witch.
I loved the way Wanda's powers looked but it didn't make sense for her powers. Maybe they chose blue so it sticks out against her largely red outfit.
Earned yourself a subscriber, welcome to my shower and car character analytics line-up.
I thought he was boring too, like the concept isn’t bad, it’s cool to know a bit of Storm’s relatives but Spyke…. He just didn’t work for me.
They did not really have much fate in him tbh
@@diamonshade7484Yeah… that’s true
I didn't like the show adding a random non-mutant sister to Storm tbh. Was just kinda random and makes Storm's backstory...weird? That was my only gripe with the character.
I always felt like he had another lvl after the full mutation.Especially since they never really explain if he had a healing factor that was really fast.He could be an ultimate tank .
Cool concept but he really was a missed opportunity. He didn’t have much interpersonal connection with characters, or many episodes about him that flesh him out until the end. Even his rivalry with Pietro was sort of dropped. Their goal for representation worked; as a black kid it was nice to see a black male on the X-Men. Aside from seeing Bishop in the 90’s show, I didn’t think there even was a black guy X-Men. I just wish they cooked with him more. As you said, he could often be forgotten. His last season arc was interesting but depressing considering how under utilized he was prior, it felt like an extra punishment. He could’ve used that Kaldur’ahm treatment (and even that felt like he was missing some sauce in favor of his white teammates).
I am talking about him always feeling instead of acting (before the mutants were revealed to the human race.) For example, when I was rewatching this show again at 16, the episode he first appeared it, when he was fighting Quicksilver. In the episode he says
“That’s is Peatro. You’re going down this time.” And “Not this time Peatro. It time I win one!”
Both those times he shouted out to Peatro and rushed towards him to tackle him. 1. Shouting at him in anger only makes Quicksilver aware that he is going to try to attack; which gives Quicksilver time to dodge. 2. The guy seriously tackles at Peatro when he is fully aware the guy has super speed. After those 2 acts of stupidity, I said back when I was 16 and I will say it again: He shouts giving warning of his attacking intentions and rushes towards him and yet he has the gall, the nerve, the audacity to whine and shout: “I’ve tried; he just too fast! I thought you said all that training stuff would help!”
Another thing I said at 16, is that instead of rushing towards Peatro, you must think fast in order to beat fast. For example, since Peatro relies on running at high speeds, I would have Evan shout small spikes on the ground the size of thumbtacks that would hurt Peatro and throw him off balance. When facing off someone stronger, you just need to fight smarter. He is the reason he is losing and complains. Back in 2000 I liked him and he had cool powers but as a teenager, I dislike because he whines, doesn’t think, doesn’t take things seriously ; don’t get me started when he upright disrespected his teacher by ditching class like that. I started to like him when I watched a season of the show I have never watched back in 2000, season 3 and 4.
He is also basically a porcupine
are you going to cover when spike has his forced full armor mutation at some point
I forgot he became a morlock, thought he died in the energy drink episode
I gotta say X-men evolution is the best franchise in all xmen animated films
Me 2
Why?
@@minicle426 we don’t really get a highschool story with them and villain origin story
Spike was cool when he got that mutation and started protecting other mutants in the sewer
Huh, I just noticed that if it had been me, Sabretooth couldn't have surprised me with that message the same way. I always check what the last picture or video is when l turn my camera on.
First off lets be clear just because marrow was created first doesn't mean she was better ....spike was waaay more cooler and popular....marrow was never mentioned for anything until spike came along and all the comparison started ....spike was in X men 3 movie against wolverine
Dude I love spyke to death, but this first season didn’t do him justice like the rest. So for the first season yeah he sucked, but there’s a reason he’s my one of my favorites in this show
He was my favorite character as a kid just because of his cool powers, but when I re-watched the show as an adult I realized that - not only he had less lines and screen time than everyone else (specially Kitty, that girl was spoiled) - the writers really had no idea what to do with him and literally had him quit the X-Men mid-series - in a very out of character way - to join the Morlocks and do F all for the rest of the show. Wasted potential if I've ever seen one.
Spyke did get better when his powers upgraded.
I remember seeing him using his spikes like a full body armor 😊😊
The black guy on skateboard trope 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
When was that ever a trope?💀 Spike is the ONLY character I know that did that
I guess you can argue Static was too but he never raod a skateboard, he only used a disk when it was hero time
That's a trope? Who are some of the others?
Besides Night Thrasher I can't really find anyone else who skateboard
I would argue Spike deserved better writing. I think he was a great representation of Young Black Males who struggle with trust and finding their own identity. I wish they would put him in the comics at least, he would be great for a wakanda x men storyline
I was upset that this version didn't make it to the comics because I was really in his power progression but unfortunately the show didn't really care for him😮💨. I didn't really find out about Marrow until I watched Wolverine and the xmen, it isn't hard to argue that their really similar especially with involvement of the morlocks then spyke's morlock mutation as well but from what I heard they didn't know Marrow when they made him but giving that they didn't know what to do with him, I see why they give him the morlock storyline. I still like him nonetheless. It's not like there aren't a lot of people with similar abilities to one another in comics, especially with all mutant telepathys. I consider Marrow and Spyke like the opposite of Wolverine with more focus on the bone ability and lesser healing.
Please do an avalanche video next please.
He’s my favorite character in X-men evolution and I would love to see him in the MCU. I wish X-men evolution was still on.
The poor mans Marrow! glad someone said it!
Be for real he was waaaaay cooler than marrow ....marrow was never even spoke about until spike came and all the comparison started
@cementmixxTV not even MvC2 Marrow?
He was a black skateboarder that helped a lot of misunderstood African Americans feel comfortable in their own skin growing up privileged folk could never understand lol
THANK YOU. I was never a fan of Spyke, and since Iceman is one of my favorite X-Men, I was even more salty that Spyke was his replacement (and later on that switched, but still). They also had other black mutants they could've used, and I never understood if he and Storm were biologically related
One of the weakest characters but had great moments. But the two characters they added in the Xmen Legends games were worse, by far.
He was just a black male version of Marrow
Crazy how you didn’t mention bro had his shirt tucked into his boxers..😂
Style was just different back then ig
i mean yeah, they only made him because they couldn't make bishop a teenager for whatever reason and he's kind of a cut and paste of marrow power wise
Not disappointed at all, keep those studies a priority. Nice video, I liked Spike (but only bc he was black rlly). I’m not certain how I felt about his “progression” later down the line.
I was literally thinking this exactly this morning
Im a 90s kid so i watched this when it aired and i can say much like xmen ..at that time i had NO IDEA what the storylime was 😂 but boy did i watch every episode. . Gonna have to revisit this one
Aye bro as a fellow college student I get it that first week is tough
He was and forever will be my favorite
This kid is a menace
Blasphemy my man Spike was one of the greatest
I understand showing restraint in not doing Teen Bishop, but in retrospect of Spyke being underwhelming and Marvel eventually doing a teenage version of their other time traveling mutant Cable in the actual mainline comics, maybe they should've just did Teen Bishop.
Yknow I think it's time for the X-men start featuring the Academy X generation of mutants it's perfect for this generation, Rich jock guy, Hellion! an Anarchist Kid Omega! Blonde steoreotype Steford Cuckoos! Gay kids Anole, Mercury and Bling!
I need him in live action X men
“Auntie O’” 😂
I loveddd spyke
Love your X Men Evolution vids I'd wanna see u do a character study on Wolverine in this series
You completely left out the character progression he went through after his 2nd evolution with the bigger physique and fire spikes and joins the morlocks. That was a pivotal part of his story that showed him in a place of acceptance and pride in being a mutant since he couldn't conceal his spikes anymore. He was also shown to come into his own as a mature leader with combat proficiency.
Yeah that’s for a future video….its he later season iteration that made me love dude so much.
They messed Spyke up when they gave him a more monstrous appearance for his next mutation. I was not fond of that design.
Not gonna lie, I barely remember X-Men Evolution. It is only in retrospective that I recall the powers of the tertiary characters. But of those that were more interesting was Sypke and Quicksilver. Not for either's previous iterations but because of the storyline as rivals. Pietro is a narcist and Spyke was an average teenager. However, as this video showed, Evan should be reliant on a social group. His angst was so natural I did not recognize it til now. Neither did I not saw the second episode but nice recap. I do understand frustration over this rough cutoff. I hope atleast the writers of those episodes did go to do great projects!
I couldn't help thinking Spike was a stand-in for Iceman last time I watched the show.
Iceman was also a "kid brother" / "class clown" kind of character in the early comics, but he bounced off of Beast who was more of an intellectual goofball. Iceman tended to lean more towards kid brother than Spike did too. His antics were purposefully meant to take the edge off for the others who all had more emotional issues than he did, which combined with Beasts more boastful attitude contrasting his, made him really lovable right off the bat. What really got me thinking that was the origin. Iceman was also put in jail in his origin, but he was going to be lynched by an angry mob of his own neighbours. He was actually the first X-Man Cyclops recruited despite being the youngest.
The big difference seems to be in their attitudes. Iceman is more focused on making others comfortable while Spike's happiness and interests come before others (at least at first). That's actually what I'd expect a show like this to do with him. Make him a little simpler for the kids watching so that the moral doesn't go over their heads.
I think I would have liked Spike a lot more if they had used more of Iceman in him.
Or if they just made Storm a teenager with the others, and Jean's roommate like she was in the comics for a while.
Sucked & Mid are not Tradable synonyms my Dude
Sucks means it was Bad
Mid/Meh means its Average my Dude
Gender Bent Marrow....not often the door swings in that direction.
They wasted his potential ong imagine if he got a panther suit or the panther serum while being a mutant they had his bloodline going to storm
I genuinely hate how Storm was made an adult just so he could exist when they both could’ve been teens and they could’ve been cousins. Her character focused around him a lot just for him to be turned into a morlock and leave so now we have a waterdown Storm and Spyke left so we had no main black mutant on the main team…
I think sucked is a bit harsh but definitely not memorable especially since he got written down to recurring character. Nothing wrong with trying new characters, its a hit and miss system and hey without it we never would have gotten Laura.
I was absolutely PISSED when he left in S3E6 1st of all:why did they still have him in the new intro after he left? 2nd:I hate that (even though it’s implied) he does eventually rejoin the team but it doesn’t happen until the final episode also while his mutation in Season 4 is cool I’m not the biggest fan solely because of the design everything else is awesome also I never realized this until recently he doesn’t use his skateboard anymore after S3 I understand why but still (also also side note:Spykecam is one of the few episodes that I rewatched all the time after I finished the show for the first time which was a little over a decade ago I recently rewatched it and finished it 3-4 months ago)
I wonder what a teenage bishop would look like in the show if he would’ve been better than Spike
I literally forgot about him.
May your semester go the best it can (^_^)
Spyke Lee
Don’t suppose I could request for Kitty Pryde next?
I liked Spyke, but the writers did not. The idea of him was great, he was a good addition to the team, liked his relationship with Storm and Beast, the powerset was cool too. But he ain't get to do anything, besides double mutate and hide in the sewers, which I was eh on, cause as a kid I knew that meant he was getting written off the show.
He was token representation... just as underwritten as Storm (who never got a plotline of her own).
For the largest demo watching the channel (i had no clue, that explains static) we got done dirty & with Storm also.
Replacing iceman with spyke is like replacing beast boy with static shock and as much as I love static I can't deny that beast boy has been in the teen titans way longer than static just like iceman has been in the x men way longer than spyke so it doesn't make sense to write iceman off like that even though he's one of the main members of the x men it just don't sit right with me
I have been considering watching x-men evolution.
Spyke sounds like a decent character, for the most part anyway.
I think it's unfair to say that he's a ripoff of Marrow. The only thing they have in common are their powers, but there are a lot of different characters that share the same or similar powers to other characters. There are a million telepaths or characters with super strength, super speed etc. but that doesn't make them a ripoff of another character who have the same powers.
I looove Evan but I hate when he joined the Morlocks.
Rogue and kitty pryde somehow feels like a lesbians couple
I think more like youngest sister and middle sister vibes in all honesty
