  • Welcome back to you all,
    In this video I visit my local nature reserve on the Lizard in Cornwall, UK. I haven't visited this site for many years but I am now back to explore all it has to offer.
    It's a very unique reserve offering a diverse range of Wildlife, but I am on the mission to Photograph my favourite bird the beautiful Barn Owl; they are currently rearing 7 young Owlets that are about two weeks old so the parent birds are very busy.
    I hope you enjoy this video.
    Take care of yourselves and others, and stay safe🙏
    Kindest regards
    Richard 🙂
    If you like what you see, please would you consider Subscribing to my channel, and please leave me some comments if you would. I really enjoy being out in nature and doing these videos, and hope with your help to make them better and more informative as the channel grows.

    Hey Richard, I'm so pleased I've found your channel. You seem like a guy I can learn a lot from as recently I've been trying to film animals for my nature channel, Leave Curious. I've started off with content relating to trees, but they're a bit easier to capture... anyway ill be watching more of your videos today! - the footage of the barn owl in flight was awesome.

    Another great video Richard and absolutely one of the best subjects you can photograph. I have really struggled to find the barn owls this year. I can sense some frustration in your video that many hours put in but and although some great results not as much as you hoped for. To me that just shows how you are respecting the wildlife and as you say keeping clear of the nesting site and hoping they are just going to come to you. Looks like a fairy large area so not going to be easy. Would look stunning if it landed on that perch though. Well done mate.... Cheers Keith

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  4 года назад +1

      Hiya Keith, really appreciate it mate. I've heard similar stories of Barnies not doing to well further up the line! Lets hope they recover and do better next year! Yes, the quality of the Barn Owls in flight could have been better but manual focusing is an art I've not quite mastered yet! Just traded in my 1Dx Mk 1 for a Mk 2 so the duel Pix AF and AF tracking and 4K should help loads! The post, really hoping the fledged Owlets make use of it, fingers crossed. thanks again R.

    Great work mate - especially like that square crop of the owl with the vole!
    One quick tip with the new mic since you were talking about mountings: depending on how noisy your lens AF and IS are, it might be worth getting an audio extension lead and mounting the mic off camera... I tend to get better audio when I am able to do that...

      @RichardBirchett  4 года назад

      Hi there Carl, thanks for your kind words. It’s hard to say without knowing your budget but the choice out there is pretty varied! I’m not a Nikon shooter but if you stick to Nikon many of my friends all rave about the D500, with a tamron or sigma lens with a focal length from 100/150 - 600. With a crop factor of 1.5 x the focal length gives you quite a good reach for birds:-) happy to advise on Canon if you do require it, just contact me through my website and I can give you more info. Thanks, all the best R 👍

    Great video this week Richard. Can't believe the variety of birds you got on your temporary perch, I'd be happy with one of those!! I would also be interested to know some info on a couple of bits of your kit. What is the make and model of bag hide you use? I have one but it is much less functional than yours. I wouldn't mind knowing the make of shirt you use as well!! Cracking barn owl shots by the way, I'm having trouble finding any in the trent valley due to the flooding earlier this year! Cheers Mate!👍

      Good evening Scott, I hope you are keeping well? Perches really do work so well, and it's amazing how quickly birds start to use them, look at Kingfishers they love them! It's a Lenscoat Lenshide and it's in my Vlog description but this is a link to it on Amazon, amzn.to/31NWXlY this is an affiliate link so you don't have to proceed with that specific one but it will give you the details. You don't pay anymore but I might get a small percentage of sale. There are a few companies in the UK that sell them, WEX Photovideo or Lenscoat direct from the US, amazing product! Hope to do a review on them soon. The shirt is Military issue from my time in the forces, you might be able to get hold of one from any Army/Navy/RAF surplus store, great bit of kit lightweight and very well made! Shame, they always struggle with bad weather, fingers crossed they recover in your area. All the best Mate. R:-)

    was doing some point and shoot photography while on a walk this guy saw me get a robin and then told me where to find the barn owl went out the next morning got it within half an hour of setting up i don’t have a hide or camo gear i just chuck on my grey/black coat boots are brown and then i’m just basically sitting in a bush one thing you have to be weary off this is it’s not really them seeing you as one like big thing ahah this doesn’t make sense correct me if i’m wrong but it appears they mainly sense you from light reflection the ones i get have a very hard time detecting me i do this by wearing a balaclava but it’s just wool black like ski thing and gloves just go for a very dark clothing items for people out they’re on a budget.

      Really interesting to hear your experiences, equally I've had many good sessions with Barn Owls with only drab clothing and some Owls get quite use to you after a while. Thanks for watching regards R 👍

    Hi Richard. I really enjoyed the video and have subscribed. Is that the reserve by the WW2 radar station or the one next to the airfield? I've tried the radar station and tbh it was crawling with adders and not much else. The old airfield gates were shut so I didn't get to go in there.

      Hi Steve, thanks very much for watching and Subscribing👍. Yes thats right, not on the Airfield as thats an active RN air station, there are lots about up there so it can be a bit dodgy especially when its hot! Thanks R 👍

      @@RichardBirchett The airfield I was thinking of is the disused one called Predannack but I'll check out the areas around
      That heathland at Goonhilly is adder HQ. Walking along by Pascoe's Pool I had one go between my legs as I was walking then one across the front of my boot. All part of the natural world and you're in their backyard not your own.

      @@stevemurnan1702 Totally right Steve, that is Predannack and its still an active military airfield used by RNAS Culdrose, I'm Ex Navy and still a serving reservist and part of Predannack Conservation group so have a lot to do with the management of it. Cracking spot, if you are ever down might be able to give you a tour:-) R

      @@RichardBirchett Thanks Richard. I didn't realise it was still in use although the gates and fences were in good repair so there was no access to the area from the road. A few years back there were some old RAF Jaguars parked up as they were withdrawn from service if my memory serves me correct. It's good there is a conservation group. Too many airfields have been lost so good on you. They are unique habitats and it's pleasing to see one protected.
