SERIOUSLY, How Is Destiny 2 Still Alive?

  • Having first launched in September 2014 and seen numerous updates, expansions and overhauls throughout the years, it's shocking that the Destiny franchise has held on for as long as it has. Bungie will conclude the Light and Darkness saga - a story nearly ten years in the making - on June 4th with Destiny 2: The Final Shape.
Yet the sheer tenacity for survival it's displayed, whether it's Bungie's many mistakes that take many months to fix or the live-service genre falling out of favor (with a few exceptions), has been impressive. With The Final Shape, the franchise is arguably facing its biggest hurdle in years amid layoffs, controversies and a potential takeover by Sony.
So, let's look back on the years, the highs and lows of the franchise and ponder how it survived, seemingly against all odds, while its competitors faded into the ether.

I spent this entire year trying every FPS game on the market none of them came close to the gameplay and just sheer volume of content. To really appreciate the game, instead of focusing on what we all find annoying, I started being a sherpa for new lights. Because it's genuinely a fun FPS with space magic, cool mechanics, good music, beautiful settings and a cool ongoing story. It's the MCU of gaming at this point and Final Shape is endgame.
Everything after this probably won't be as good from Bungie but the 10 years of Destiny was an amazing journey that I'm glad I stuck with.
It's easy to only pay attention to the negative things like the lightfall campaign but hardly anybody talks about how good it feels to use the grapple hook. People say GoS is bad yet it's just a better version of VoG and probably the most beautiful raid in the game. It's easy to hate Bungie for the content vault but not address the fact that the game would probably be 200GB if they didn't do that.
Nothing is perfect and even if Destiny 2 was, people would still hate it. Thanks for reading.

@@slackstarfish8133 Damn, I didn't think I would see the "D1 was better" take out in the wild again, I thought we were past that point.
In all seriousness though, it's not exactly fair to dump millions of people into the "they're just addicted" box without any differentiation. I don't know how closely you've been following the game and the discourse around it, but by now even the biggest D1 enjoyers no longer claim that it was better than what D2 is nowadays. Not saying the game is without flaw (god knows that's far from the truth), but so was/is D1 just like any other game and D2 by all means is a great experience if you want to get into it. Again, not saying it's perfect or that D1 was terrible or that there aren't plenty of people with an unhealthy addiction to the game. But it's not everybody, and D2 by this point, is just so much bigger and better than D1 ever had any hopes of being that pretty much nobody who is even vaguely familiar with the game claims the opposite anymore.

When Destiny 2 first launched, it felt very much like Destiny 1. There were a handful of campaign missions and then nothing. Back to PvP. I'd been tired of Crucible at that point. I had my fill in Destiny 1. I took about a 5 year hiatus and came back to see how much has changed.
I've been enjoying it. Checking out the new subclasses. The gameplay is still solid. Even picked up a few of the DLC's when they went on sale.
I think what's also great about Destiny is, unlike more traditional MMO's, you can absolutely walk away for a few years, come back and not really miss a beat. Yeah, there's tons of campaigns, raids and side quests to do but none of them are absolutely necessary, unless there's a specific exotic tied to said content.
I'm happy doing whatever I feel like doing that day. Usually bounties.

Lack of any serious competitor for its player base throughout its lifecycle. Most other games that come along and manage to get a portion of the D2 player base die out within a couple months and don't have staying power. Bungie, despite all of it's flaws and terrible development of the game, still manages to have some of the best movement and shooting mechanics in the FPS genre. It also has enough varied loot, build crafting, and weapons to keep things interesting. So many games that come out now just have cookie cutter cardboard weapons that feel bland. The core game has always been solid, the biggest issue has always been Bungie.

Its funny because destiny bounces back and forth on that line of how well a live service can be and how bad it can be. It really showcases the good and the bad very well. I also think a lot of people including myself just didn't want to leave without finishing the story we started. But even more so destiny has always had and still does have so much potential to be more and that's the thing with most of the other live service games the "destiny killers" just don't have that feel to them. If you play them at least in my personal experience I don't get the feel that it could be more that it could go the distance. So many other live services just come out with something wrong just right at the base of the game the very core that the game is built on is bad and if the foundation your building on is bad then the result is everything else will crumble as well. Destiny is the opposite it's foundation is solid as hell it's always back and forth with what Bungie tries to build on its foundation that fails and sometimes it lands. Fingers crossed that final shape is going to be the expansion we hope it can be.

Start of the Red War campaign, at the beginning of the vanilla game's campaign. Hasn't been playable for a while. Cabal commanders (the Bond Brothers) in D1 sent an unknown signal to someone far away (from the crashed ship in the Dreadnaught) that was later found to be contacting the greater Cabal Empire, which, years later in D2, now have come to assault the Last City and Guardians as a whole. You try to defend the Tower as the Red Legion (Cabal led by Dominus Ghaul) attack the city and encase the Traveler in pursuit of gaining/controlling power from the Traveler. Later this casing suppresses Guardian powers when you first encounter Ghaul in a ship that Amanda Holiday flew you to and you fought through. You work to get back your powers and take down Ghaul, after you initial defeat, who is a danger to the entire solar system, threatening to blow up the Sun with a ship they have orbiting it (which we take care of later). Ghaul wants to know why weak humans were chosen instead of more powerful beings (such as himself or the Cabal race in general)- that they would have been more capable to defend it from danger. Speaker from D1 dies after being held hostage and interrogated about how to commune/communicate with the Traveler b/c he resists and insults them. We eventually fight Ghaul, after taking out a lot of generic Cabal leaders below him and bases/infrastructure they've setup, and he is able to use Light supers/powers against us. We do beat him but he gets more power suddenly and gets mega powerful right before us in a cinematic. Ghaul has siphoned so much "light-power" and basked in it that he grew massive, glowing, and more powerful. The Traveler "awakes", seeing the dire situation, and blasts the casing off of itself and destroys Ghaul in his ascended form. Ghaul is glad that he was finally recognized by the Traveler for which he tried so hard to communicate with and understand. Remnants of the Red Legion and their bases still linger in the system after that, and even now (in the EDZ).
Hope this gives you a good foundational understanding of the leading up to and events of Vanilla D2!

Lightfall was definitely rushed because they intended for one more dlc then changed to 2. TFS already seems much more serious in tone all around just by the trailers and vidocs.

Whole video is just bashing on Destiny. I like it cause in the end, Destiny is still somehow alive and with Final Shape just on the horizon, a lot of guardians and kinderguardians are playing and grinding for final loot and bounties. Prepping for the release.

The game is like someone's bad relationship. It's bad in some areas, it's good in some other areas and the good outweighs the bad eventhough the bad is more sound than the good. You wanna leave... but somehow you can't. That is Destiny in a nutshell. I applaud people who did leave for good though.

Worst take I’ve ever heard: “It’s ridiculous because the [Destiny] franchise had to be rebooted twice over…”
Like Warframe was rebooted twice over…
Like Call of Duty isn’t a franchise that has reinvented itself thrice over…
Like Magic the Gathering has undergone a myriad of transformations over 30 years of gameplay…
Like GTA Online didn’t have retcons over its live service years…
This is just lazy journalism at its finest. Nice opinion… Very invalid and biased, however.

To me it's simple, the core gameplay feels good to play. That's literally it.
It is a certain something about the way the guns fire, sound design and all, the way movement works, abilities, etc... and just overall "feel" of the experience.. makes it really fun to play.
I agree that the systems around it are absolute dogshit, and if you've been playing since vanilla D1 like I have, you just know most of the complaints do not target the "feel" of the game, but rather the systems around it, be it reward structure, activities, etc etc...

Guardians make our own fate and so does Destiny and the community are their issues with the game for sure plenty and the time it takes to fix is nuts at times.
But destiny is an experience unlike any other for most and this dlc will be the end for many. The old sucken cost fallacy or wishing to see such a journey to an end I’ve been playing this since the end of high school for me.
10 year journey for most of us; for good and bad this is our last huzzah maybe so we are a resilient bunch.

Gonna answer before watching the video:
The game is fun, very fun. You can sink in thousands of hours and be far from done with the game. Yeah, getting into it is a bit pricey, but I think 100 bucks for over a thousand hours of gaming is a good tradeoff, and whoever says the opposite, is wrong.

The problem with D2 is its a money grubbing cash cow. Its very much pay to play but you get what you pay for and thats the trade. Throw cash at the company and theyl show you where it went. If you get the big daddy yearly expansion for 100 your set til the next one, compared to some MMOs 100 a year isnt too bad if you can afford it. I started when it went free for PS like 5 years ago and stuck with it. Now im big excite for Final Shape. These last 8 weeks they been on a roll what with Into the Light, The Pantheon, whisper, zero hour, and in game fireteam finder. Hopefully the road to project payback stays clean.

I remember the last day I didn't know what Destiny was. Me and 3 of my boys were playing Modern Warfare 3 or maybe it was Infinite Warfare, the one with John Snow. We were in a lobby reading up and Suffer said "Queens, you gettiny Destiny tomorrow?" I said "whats that?" For the next half hour or so he gave me a crash course in Bungie, Halo and what he thought Destiny was gonna be like.
When he was done I was like "sounds cool but im not really into all that space sci-fi shit plus I'm broke." He convinced me to trade in a few games I wasnt playing anymore to GameStop and see how much off I could get and if i end up hating Destiny he'll get me those games back. I didnt want them back, there was a reason i wasnt playing them.
Ended up getting Destiny and store credit as I guess the games had value... Took Destiny 1 home with me that day and for the next 4 years straight.. it was literally all I played. I was a Call of Duty main since The Big Red 1 and since then I've only played the Modern Warfare remake campaign once through a couple years ago. I've put in more hours in Destiny 1 and 2 that I think I've put into gaming my entire life prior.
Destiny flipped a switch in me I didnt know was there and i became captivated with the lore, with the flavor text on weapons, the worlds, the connection I felt with my character and all the adventures we've been on.
I don't think I've ever been as invested in a game ever to be honest. Not as a kid playing as Samus though Super Metroid or Link in Ocarina. Destiny somehow became life. All those friends from the first day are all gone now but i still play and I am not as addicted in these last 5 years as i was in the first but i still play as often as i can. I'm glad i gave Destiny a chance.
