    Finally, I have been ruining pinion gears on two of my reels, that are of a much cheaper variety than these, because the reel engages during hard cast. Thank you for being the first to explain it at the 26 min mark!

    Great comparison!
    To abu revo defence, try to take out the magnets and leave only 3 or 2, then you get much better casting
    performance out of it... with all the magnet in place it is overbraked even at zero setting!
    Best regards Larsey.

    I just ordered the Lexa 300 HD. I wish I had crossed this video first. No bait stores seemed to carry the reel so I could examine it. After seeing the 400’s size to the 300, and the metal piece on the 400 vs the plastic piece on the 300. I believe it would have been worth the extra $50. The reel will go on the Daiwa DX 8ft Heavy/fast rod. It’s for throwing 10” swimbaits and A-rig at Lake Guntersville. I’m sure I’ll love the 300, but it’s truly a big bait rod and reel, so now I’m wishing I’d have went bigger.

    Very good review on the Shimano Tranx. You pointed and explained all the excellent design features. Good stuff. However you failed to understand the design of the Toro Beast drag stacks and the reason that the main gear shaft is not attached to the reel frame. There is a very good reason for that. I'm actually very impressed with this new design, it's brilliant!
    Your review of the Tranx is very educational. The others brands are not. Obviously very biased and not being objective. Pity about that.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 лет назад +2

      I thought I explained the basics of it's function pretty well...but admittedly kinda lost insterest as I was talking about it. Kind of one of those things where ya talke and realize what im getting at is gonna take awhile...and it's probably a good idea to get a move on....But there is no bias at all. The brand on the box doesn't matter to me. I was very psyched for this reel to hit due to the seals. And the size weight and capacity pluse internal support are worthy of praice at the sub 300$ price. I fished the snot out of all of them. And the abu when getting beaten on by a 1000lbs of bluefish didn't fish as well as every other reel imho...and it got squeaky quicly. If you watch some of my other vids i call shimano junk, have issues with diawa, and call an abu one of the best reels ever maide...I used to own morrums and invested 500$ in custom frames and bits for a long range abu bomber. But sometimes picking a winner can be confusted for bias....Tackle tour on the other hand says everyting is a must buy...so who is right? :)

    • @ACSFlyingfish
      @ACSFlyingfish 6 лет назад

      Well as I said, you explained the Tranx very well. Good stuff. Yes, the seals is very interesting.
      You failed to understand why the this particular model Revo Toro main gear shaft is not attached to the main reel frame and were dismissive about it without troubling to find out why it was designed like that. I'm very impressed with the new design of this drag design. I'll let you delve into it yourself to figure it out.
      Re Morrums, I regard them as over priced and underperforming reels. The round Shimanos at the same price point are much better.

    Great review of the Komodo.It does feel like a truck, powerful. My brother had some nice yellowfin on the big B-2 stealth bomber one!How do you feel Boca bearings would do in them. And what's the scoop on sealed bearings.Do you oil them at all or run them dry?I have bean cleaning all my stock bearings in lighter fluid overnight and taking an air can to them,then putting one drop of TSi oil in them and it works sickly good most of the time.Please advise on aftermarket bearings.Thanks, Sal

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 лет назад +2

      Rubber seald bearings may be able to have the seals popped out witout damaging them. Lube as you would normally and replace the seal. Be careful about using lighter fluid. Some bearings use cages that can react with chemicals. And long exposure could damage them. Just a heads up. Just like rubbing alcohol melts the dc brake on metanium dc's...and brake cleaner doesn't.....ask me how i friggin know..lmao

    Appreciate the reviews! I have been looking for a new musky specific reel, and I hate how the disengaging levelwind reels cast (compared to like a Calcutta 400b, it casts super easy with a non-disengaging levelwind). I have had three pinion gears strip, and two spool pins break on two lexa 400. Very frustrating. The handle falls forward and engages midcast. The tranx sure gets good reviews, but I may even lean towards a komodo. I'll keep watching!

    New to Musky casting/jigging and wondering what you might suggest currently for something to handle 65lb braid and 7oz+ baits. Will a 300 suffice or would a 400 be a better choice

    • @garymarch4711
      @garymarch4711 4 года назад +1

      400 and 80lb braid... a few backlashes and that 7+ oz bait will cause that 65lb to snap... sending your bait off where you'll likely never see it again. Some guys use 100lb for this reason. If you go 100lb, a 500 sized would be in order.

    Adding my 2¢, even if it is a year late.
    I went with the Lexa HD for SoCal Yellowtail and Tuna. On two different sportboats I asked guys fishing the Lexa HD why that one. All of them said they ether had the Tranx break on them or had seen them break first hand. (20-30lb fish). I know it's just anecdotal, but was enough for me to go with the Lexa HD.
    The Abu......run away from keyed drag elements. I see that all the time on industrial motor brakes. They never just wear out, when they fail, they fail catastrophic. Reason enough for me to avoid them when ever possible.

Otherwise 100% best bait caster in the world in my opinion form a guy who is casting 75% of the time. When salmon is running I can cast a 7/8 oz loure farther then 99% of the people with spinning rods. I loved it so much I got a second 1.

    Not sure if anyone has made mention about this?
    With the Lexa and the spool shaft not making contact with the RH frame spool inner OD of the bearing - measure the difference between shaft OD and bearing inner ID.
    Daiwa Z200H 'Ball bearing collar A" #3 - 6H159501 that may fit and install and the shaft will then allow full support - best to see it in the schematic.
    I too have a Calcutta 50B that's got the same issue... problem no sleeve available to my knowledge that small, and 3 HH BFS Air hybrids were installed and one bearing doesn't work untill a fair bit of drag pressure is applied - but deflection of the pinion against the main is already at work - ready to start bending teeth or shredding especially in a smaller reel.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 лет назад

      Hey man! refresh my memory..Did i mention the shaft not contacting the handle sideplate bushing in the video? I can't remember...But you are 1000% correct. Only when under load does it contact. I posted a bunch of pics on stripersonline i think it was sometime last year. Which is why bearing kits generally only include the 2 spool bearings.
      For casting purposes it's actually better not to make contact with the bushing or even an upgraded bearing. (i just sold my 300 with the 3 bearing upgrade. IF the shaft is truly straight...But under heavy winching it would be a benefit especially if the pinon starts to deflect...Which is why guys who bottom fish with heavy braid around snags...I recommend going tranx due to the isolation of the pinon.
      I think the best fix i found requires the bearing upgrade.....and you're gonna laugh at this...heat up the shaft and stick a coffe stirring straw over it and trim it. :) It worked...I removed it when I sold it off but it did work :)
      Still a better design would be to not have a through shaft...and "x ship" it like in the steez or tranx.

    for me iv fallen in love with shimano but I took my old abu ambassadeur revo s from 2009, still smooth as butter if you want something that will last you a lifetime you should buy an Ambassadeur wich includes all the revo beast and toro beast, shimano has been super smooth way smoother than abu and i do not doubt that shimano is better quality but i think abu reels are built like tanks and that makes up for the loose in quality

    • @TysonHook-22-
      @TysonHook-22- Год назад

      Ive always been a big fan of Abu reels, as someone that likes LHR baitcasters Abu was the way to go back in the day, like theyve long offered every model in both left and right hand retrieves, whereas Shimano and other companies were way slower to adapt to the emerging left handed baitcaster market... its really the main thing that drove me to Abu back in the day, they also have also had some super powerful drag systems...
      When i first got into baitcasters 10ish years ago, most companies were still predominantly making right handed baitcasters (i know a few fisherman that should use left handed baitcasters but they grew up an in era when they simply didnt have the options we do today)... youd get some low to mid tier left hand models here and there, but I remember wanting certain top of the line Shimano reels but they only were available in RHR... its what turnt me away from many reel brands for a long time.
      My Abu NaCl and Revo S are still going strong to this day, and as someone that mainly shore fishes my reels get used and abused pretty hard. The NaCl has cranked in a bunch of muskies over the years and continues to impress me, though it did have a few quirks and flaws to its design it was among one of the first low profile large spool baitcasters, so it was bond to have some issues but overall was built super well and its endured many musky seasons for me.
      All that said, I think Shimano makes some awesome fishing gear... not always the most flashy and attractive products compared to the rest of the market but they simply perform excellent and theres no doubt that with a company like shimano any new product has gone through a heavy amount of research and development before hitting the market.
      This year I hope to get myself a Shimano tranx to add to my arsenal, and going forward would like to eventually replace all my reels with shimano reels.

    • @TackleAdvisors

      One thing to consider. If the clicker is an absolute must. Keep in mind the drag curve on the tranx goes from "clicker resistance" to fight strength in a blink of the eye.

      "Keep in mind the drag curve on the tranx goes from "clicker resistance" to fight strength in a blink of the eye." What do you mean by clicker resistance? Maybe I am missing something.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  7 лет назад

      When you put a reel into freespool......and engage the clicker. is has a resistance of a few ounces. The drag of the new tranx is unique. There are no bellville washers or cupped washers that compress gradually. those washers are what cause the drags on most reels to go from loose to full in 4 full turns (give or take)
      The tranx without those washers....goes from super loose (resistance of a clicker) to setting the hook. In just 2 pushes of the star.
      Many people claim fish can "feel the clicker" I'm not sure if I'm in that "camp" or not. But I believe there is some truth to that. But if the clicker is used for resistance while fishing bait. And not just for a bite alarm sound. I find the tranx drag more useful.
      So if i'm chunking bunker for striped bass....I cast out. Engage the reel....back the drag star back 2x while holding the handle...(takes half a second) When a fish takes the bait......when I'm ready to set the hook...I push forward on the drag star twice and set the hook...It's very reminscent of a lever drag....where you push the lever from freespool to strike.....only with the tranx you do it twice. I'll see if i can find in the video where I mention it.

    In my experience with gearing in heavy equipment that plastic actually last longer than metal gearing. Have no idea why but all the highest quality pumps have a metal body with plastic teeth on the gears. They run much more pressure than this will ever and it last about 10000 hrs. I have no idea if that is the thought abu went with but I thought of it and shared with you.

      Crazy isn't it? It's like the metal on metal wears and fatiques while the plastic almost self lubricates.

    First thanks for the detailed review. I’ve been bottom fishing in Monterey Bay with a Curado 200 high speed (30” per crank) and find in a little under powered and possibly slow for my application. It’s hard to put my finger on exactly what I need. I slow drop keeping my thumb on the spool to stay in contact with the jig. I get a lot of bites on the drop or as soon as I touch bottom. Then I’m speed reeling to catch up with the ling that just bombed out of the rocks to attack. Maybe a longer handle would give the power difference I’m looking for, maybe a different gear setup. Not sure really. I fish braid line between 12 and 30lb depending on the structure so the Lexa 300 should have plenty of capacity. I also have a handle from a revo toro NaCl that I will put on the lexa. I had a revo toro NaCl and loved it, I could cast weightless or 10” deep divers with the same reel. I lost the NaCl in a kayak accident so I never used it much in the salt so I’m not sure how it would work in this scenario. I’ve been told a 40” ling will bust my gear. So far I’ve only caught 25” fish and I would like a little more power but mainly for quicker hook sets. So in your opinion is the 300 ok or should I go 400?
    Btw I liked your review on the cast distances. I would be interesting to see a casting review with weightless baits, like a fluke and hook type setup. I feel like the lexa might be the best of both worlds and the beast would probably perform better. Regards,

      How long of a rod are you using. And what's its action. If using a short stick under 6' with lots of give. It may make it difficult to move fish. Stepping up to a rod over 7' with a bit more grunt in the upper third may be more helpful than stepping up to a 36" inch per turn reel. Know what i mean? I'm not a big bottom fishing guy. And never targeted ling. But using squishy rods targeting blackfish can make it tought getting em out of wrecks. Longer rods also move much more line on the hookset. I use 8 footers on my yak in fw. The 7'6 teremar is a great bottom fishing rod. amzn.to/2zlgGLI
      I also use the 7' which is a tad lighter. great tip and action for bottom fishing with tons of power. TO me the most important thing about bottom fishing is speed and support for pulling out snags. Tranx kinda gets the nod there can't remember how fast the Komodo goes. But thats another powerful reel.
      Thanks, the beast does a bit better with light baits. But a 200 sized reel makes it a bit more manageable say when throwing 5" finS.

      I've been using a 7' inshore berkly rod its MF action and power is M. I should probably step up to MH or H power. I have a Shimano TDR in 8' MH that I will try this week and see if that makes a difference. I'm still getting more hookups and I've consistently been catching more fish than my friends. I think it’s because I’m using braid and I can feel light bites better. Most bites are just subtle changes or a slight vibration on the line. Then I speed reel tight and hookset. Sometimes it’s just 2 or 3 head shakes and their off or I might even crank 10’ of line with them on. I think I can definitely benefit from a rod with more power and length. My roommate has a Lamiglas 7’6” that I might try, feels like MH but it’s not listed on the rod.
      The best way I can describe the problem is when I’m speed reeling up on the fish I feel under powered, or maybe it’s a balance thing (it feel strange to speed reel 4 cranks at home now) with Could also be I’m reeling a load onto the rod because its M power when I should just be setting the hook sooner with a more powerful rod. I’ll have to go put my hands on a few rods. I like the inshore I’m using because it feels light in the tip (well balanced). My TDR is not and the Lamiglas could be better and I know I’m picky enough that in the long run I will want something well balanced. I like my TDR for dragging weight or applications where I’m not hold the rod lightly for long periods of time. If that makes sense.
      Lings aren’t the only thing I plan to catch with this setup. A multitude of bottom fish and hopefully some halibut. Anything with will hit a finesse type jig presentation.

    This video got me to subscribe. I really like all the info and vibe of your videos. I noticed that some reels have a centrifugal break or magnetic break. Do you personally prefer one over the other or does it not make a difference to you personally?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks man! Im glad you enjoy them! I bounce back and for in terms of what I prefer. And all braking systems do the same thing... Apply braking (duh). But they vary greatly. And "come in" at different strengths at different times. So different brakes may behave differently depending on speed and aerodynamics and conditions. In general I prefer a wide range externally adjustable mag break. I really like the ivcb flying arm abu brake in terms of friction brakes. But like the svs infinity combined with the shimano feel better overall. A curado with ivcb 4 would be awesome. A tranx with mag force Z or DC would be epic... Wait until you see me cut pieces out of the curado DC in order to send shimano a message to bring DC back to saltwater reels (Trinidad dc was the best ever)

      The drag gave out?????? Weird...Does the handle turn backwards? Or is it line slipping on the spool if fishing braid.
      What do you mean by gave out? Even if the washers were felt and toast..you'd still have something.....Usually when people tell me what you just did...it's something else being the cause.

    I recently ordered a Shimano Tranx 400 from amazon prime. I got the low gear ratio, so I went ahead and ordered the power handle for it. When I took off the double paddle handle I noticed my reel didn’t have the star drag seal. Aside from helping the reel be more water resistant do you think not having that seal could hinder performance? I’m still gonna order the part from shimano and probably won’t use the reel until I get the part. Btw I’m really glad I saw this video, if not I wouldn’t have known about that seal!

    Trying to decide between lexa 300 non hd line counter, lexa hd 300 8.1, or tranx 300. Bobber fishing bait for chinook and coho also double duty as a trolling reel for plugs or herring. Your video sounds like you fish an entirely different fisherie than I do. Basically I need a high retrieve reel that has enough sack to whip in a 40# king but also is going to spend most it's life in brackish water with an occasional bottom trip for ling cod. A clicker is not a deal breaker either. Reel is going on a 10' casting rod with Fuji trigger cut out grip. Looking for your opinion, great channel and videos! Thanks!

      Friend of mine who actually was involved in the developmen of the tranx who is an insane centerpinner. And who frequents BC steelhead country. And lives on the west branch has float fished with it. But mainly chucks metal
      One thing i've said repeatedly in my replies and reviews about this reel and others. Shimanos X ship (which is just a dual bearing supported pinion. Really does translate into durability and power efficiency. One thing that can come in handy is one of my favorite features of the reel. The super fast tightening and loosening of the drag. WHen you get a king in tight. If they go ape shit...you want to back off pressure quick. (friend had one bull rush between his legs turning his rod into a 4 piece real quick. Was pretty funny actually)Tranx will do that.
      However when throwing plugs and switching to helicopotering rigs. It's nice to adjust on the fly externally. Even though I like the lexa better than the beast. The Abu may work better for you. I never thought of it..but the silly over complicated drag may be beneficial to you with those crazy salmon.
      THough the Tranx is better for pretty much everything else.
      Hope that helped!

      I definitely see your point as to a narrower band of drag increments, especially since I run braid with no stretch. Not rod friendly. Not sure I want to fork out the cash for a beast yet I'm not too convinced. I do love all my ambassadors though so I'm sure the quality is there. Just got back from town and messed around with the tranx and the lexa non hd line counter. I got about a month to decide, thanks for the reply man, great videos!

      Well brass on brass and stainless on stainless are strong as hell depending on size and cut. Corrosion shouldn't be an issue with either. As a nerd ya head off those sorta things :)
      Combine dissimilar metals or let run exposed with no lube and wear rates go up.

    Hey, Awesome review, I'm in a dilemma right now, in Mx we are catching 30-40 inch Shortfin Corvinas, and 30-40 inch Snooks on 4 1/2" X-raps, I throw them on a Daiwa Tatula type HD, Calcutta 250, And Calcutta 250 Te DCs, but, I keep getting spooled and I would like to upgrade to a Tranx, the thing is I don't know what size to buy, The 300 doesn't have the line capacity I'm looking for, and the 400 does, but, I think I'll sacrifice the casting distance with the 400, will i be able to throw 1/2 oz. lures with the 400?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  7 лет назад +3

      THe tranx 300 and 400 won't cast anything like the TE DC going down to half an ounce. I don't plan on fishing anything lighter than an ounce with the tranx to be honest. I'm sure half ounce lures will be ok but not in the same league as the dc and Tat.

      I did screw up (or quasi screw up on thing) There is a glue like coating on a few external seals on the tranx.....I didn't realize it was a hydrophobic coating....It doesn't effect the waterproofing or warranty in any way shape or form if it's removed...But being the reel was out for a day when i had it torn apart....I didn't know it was sensitive. I confirmed through a friend at shimano through both their US head of service and japan...That what i did woulnd't effect warranty or waterproofing. But the hydrophobic coating does add to the effectivness of their system
