That societal timeline is so stressful really has made me think at 20 its too late. I have this deep deep want in my heart to follow my dreams to go into medicine to learn exciting things and I am my biggest obstacle. Sometimes its not easy to do things you want when you yourself do not cooperate. I guess before I can do what I really really wish and dream and yearn for I really need to fix myself and heal myself so eventually I can start healing others. Great video! I am 34 and after financial studies and 10 years in banking I finally am a med student in my second year! I am so happy about my decision. I am new to your channel, what is your speciality? Did you pass the USMLE? Good luck with your channel!
Hi Lavinia! Thank you for watching and subscribing! I appreciate it! Congrats on chasing your dreams - that is SO awesome! Yes I passed all the USMLE exams in 2019! It was a crazy stressful year but I made it :) Currently a first year medicine resident in new york :)
You're an absolutely beautiful human being. Even when you speak, you pour out smartness, maturity, kindness and compassion. I feel like you showed the people who watched this video the same compassion you show your patients. I felt sparks in my body with every word you said. Ever point you made perfect sense. "How does anyone know what they want to do for the rest of their life when they're sixteen" and "Society's timeline". These are some of the things I've realized in the past few years. I sensed your joy when you talked about the buzz and fullfilment you feel when you walk home after working long shifts. Maybe you hear this everyday. But I want to say you're a wonderful person. The world is lucky to have a doctor like you. God bless you.
I hated medical because my dad were forcing me to do it when i was 17. I ran away from home, working here and there. I tried to study history (my fav subject) but it doesn't feel good. I realise, i feel happy when i give service/help and people are thanking me. so, i tried to excel in hospitality but nasty customer put me into depression and I took it personal when bosses are critizing me even when i thought i'm trying to do my very best. so i left hospitality. now, i'm much older. whenever i comeback to my hometown seeing my father's face it makes me sad. I am old without any higher education. these past few days, i've been searching ways on how to enrol to med school. and here i am, thank you dr i wish this is the final answer that i am looking for. ❤
I graduated about 2 years ago with a bachelor in computer science and my age is now 22. I really wanted to study medical lab technology a.k.a laboratory sciences but everyone just discouraged me. I don't want to pursuie a master degree in computer science because I will not be happy and remain miserable my whole life 😭
I’m pushing 40 and I’m in med school now (graduated of my 4 years premed in medical tech whilst still working) after a fallback career in the corporate & investment finance for years where I’m already in mid-leadership position. It’s scary to let go of the things i build up for years with my career. At first, I’m constantly fearful to restart all over again and change career path but so far getting into med school was one of the best decisions I’ve ever had so far. And It’s tough because my classmates were literally could be my kids already - being the oldest guy in the class definitely has its pros and cons. I’m always on edge and worry that I didn’t know everything at all whenever we have our exams and labs; learning is tough especially if you have other stuff in life aside from school with my age but I’m having a blast and never look back.
And here I was thinking I am too late at 25😭..I started with Chemistry for my junior degree, went into teaching after because it was the only career where you could get a job, unemployment is a serious issue in South Africa, but after all of this I still feel like I owe it to myself to be a Doctor, thank you so much for this reminder 🌸
This is such an inspirational video! It applies to all the people who are considering to choose a new career path, it is never too late and it is awesome that you are sharing this message. Plus what I love about your channel is that you are sharing the "doctor lifestyle" so that other people who might have the interest to become a doctor can become more aware of the challenges that this job comes with! I find your whole channel inspiring plus I love the New York environment and the way how you also enjoy New York! :):)

Came across this video at the perfect time. I am currently preparing for my finals for my first year of Medical School. It's been a long and tough journey getting here and this first year of Medical School hasn't been the experience I'd imagined it being due to COVID-19. The passion and drive to study for my exams had faded through the year and it had made me question what I was doing here in the first place. This video has reignited that spark in me and reminded me of my journey getting into Medical School and why I wanted to study medicine in the first place. I needed this spark to re-motivate me to study that little bit harder and inshallah pass my first year exams. Thank you Shirin! Love your content.

I am 40 years old and to become a doctor was my childhood dream. Recently my govt abolished upper age limit to do mbbs. Now i am thinking to appear in med exam but scared about my future. People say that you will end up with nothing if you join now. When i will complete my Mbbs and MD my age will be almost 50 years. Only 15 years will left to work. I am confused . What to do ? Should i listen to my heart or my mind ? Love from INDIA
Why 15 years ? Does someone force you to stop medical practice at young age of 65 ? Most people remain sharp minded till 75+ if practicing healthy lifestyle and no abuse of alcohol, drugs, smoking and other bad habits. Thats easily a 25 year career of exciting work you love if health permitting. Only God can tell how long one can stay efficient and active and do what they love, being pessimist is 👎If you dont try to pursue your dreams you will regret it guaranteed. I am 42 and i will do all it takes to pursue my dream of being a doctor, over here in Eastern Europe Moldova also has no age restrictions. Or maybe will apply to Russian medical school as i speak Russian too, maybe thats even better. Affordable cost of study and great schools. Either way i will give my best and pursue my dream, that will a be a test to find out what you made off. People like us of middle age know what we want 💪
@@Goorood please suggest me one more time. I have a family to feed. I am the only earner of my family. How can i pursue my dream without supporting my family ? I am in dilemma. Should i go for medical course or should i continue with my job ?
@@Paradise7998 I dont know the situation and what to suggest. Having a family to take care of is of course important. Are there are means you can combine both somehow ? Are medical schools expensive in India ? In my country Moldova they are relatively inexpensive, if translated to dollars roughly 1600 dollars per year. Can study in day time and do some part time work at evening. Doctors are being paid low wages here, 600-700 dollars a month, so that makes it people who want to make more money pursue different better paid careers. I have no family to feed, no children yet, so i never thought about how to combine both things study + work. I sincerely hope you can find a solution 🙂 Plz tell how things work in India, very curious to hear, things like cost of study, how much they make and what people think about doctors.
@@Goorood Hello. In India the cost of medical education is low in govt colleges. But we can't do part time work along with studies. After completion of mbbs degree , if you able to join post graduate degree course than govt will provide you salary , which is around 50000 rupees. In private colleges medical course is too much expensive. After completion they can join as assistant professor with salary around 80000 rupees. In private hospital salary is 1 lakh rupees. Doing private practice they can earn around 20000 rupees daily. People respect doctors in India. They consider them as god on earth. But due to some doctors greed sometimes they have to face physical abuse from public. Otherwise we all consider it as a finest and noblest job. ALL INDIA INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCE is one of the best college in India. It has all the facility. Hostel fees is less than 1 dollar for 5 years. I want to join in this college. Course fee is comparatively low. But due to my duty towards my family i have to think multiple times. If somehow i can get around 50 to 60 lakh then i will quit my job. But it seems a daydream only.
So, if I wanted to start as a junior in high school, is it possible to start now even though I've not taken any more advanced classes? I'm deciding against it, but I still felt like asking.

This video gave me a pat on the head tho it really calmed my fear. I am going to go for it when I am ready. Ready for the challenge
You know Shirin. Every time I feel disappointed or down I come back here to watch your video. I am really grateful for you for this video. From bottom of my heart, thank you for this video and for your encouragement
@@shirinsyed Thank you for your answer and best of luck with your channel, will continue to follow your adventures as a resident in NYC !
How do you make a living?
Do you study full time? If so, how do you make ends meet?
This is awesome !
Awww your comment is so sweet!
@@Sona77. Aww thank you very much. Sorry I couldn't reply sooner.
Go for it sisi
I love this! Thanks for inspiring us and encouraging us not to give up on our dreams !!

Exactly what I needed at this point of time❤
Came across this video at the perfect time.
That is so awesome! Best of luck to you! Thanks for watching and subscribing - it means a lot :)

It is good to know that people consider being a Dr. At 25 because of the entrance exam then the length of the course and all.... But we shouldn't let ourselves be discouraged like that😊 we can do it.

It most definitely is because I no longer gaf about people not interested in helping themselves.

If you need to, can you work while in medical school? Although it's not exactly the same, I've heard of some nursing programs that don't allow their students to work or simply don't encourage working while in the program. I'm curious because medical school is pricey.

@@Goorood thank you for your valuable suggestion.
You are really inspiring ❤
