I started medical school as a graduate at 23 and I was so worried about being behind my friends and other people my age but I seen someone say “you’re going to be 28 anyway, you may as well be 28 with a medical degree” and it shifted my perspective completely

My husband and I both lost our jobs the year we got married. I decided to go back to school, not even remotely thinking about medicine. It came about organically. Asking my husband for his support of me not working for 6+ years was hard, but the conversation came down to "do you want to be 40 and married to an office manager or do you want to be 40 and married to a doctor?" I'll be 34 if/when I matriculate 🤷🏽‍♀️ life is too precious to waste worrying about if you are too old

Starting med school as a graduate this year at 25 can defo relate to the feeling behind in life but I think your point about how life experiences will prepare you for the stresses in the course is spot on. Although I'm starting a little later than i would've liked, I feel that I'm so much more prepared than I would have been at 18/19. Great vid!

There are all kinds of pressures and fears of missing out which are human to a degree. But if you zoom out and realize your career spans over more than 40 years, a couple of years of difference is so miniscule. People start new careers in their forties, fifties or even later. You will probably live a long life if you take reasonable amount of self care. In fact probably longer than any other generation before you with more resources and opportunities than ever before so might as well use it! Best of luck xx

I'm saying this here because I need to take this weight off my heart. I am 19 years old and in a month I will be a student at the best university in my country, the faculty of electronic engineering and telecommunications and although I lied to myself that I will be fine there, I know that my heart belongs to medicine, that I would give all the money I could earn as an electronics engineer to be with those in need. I don't know how I got to the wrong faculty, I just know that I'm afraid to give up my current place, to disappoint those who helped me get here, to be a year behind the others, I'm afraid to fail, but even more afraid to live a life with the regret that I did not do what my heart asked me to do. Reading your comments I understood that I am not the only one who feels that way.

I'm at law school and a woman. The pressure to find a balance between a successful career and doing family plans/ starting a family/ having kids is really high rn since my enviroment is getting married, having kids and building houses. Idk if I could put 100% in all at the same time. I choose the career path for now and hope that I could use the time wisely to build myself. But I definetely support the statement: One should not compare himself to others. Thanks alot for this discussion 🙏🏼💙

I started medical school at the age of 27, in the first two years I became very disappointed with it for 2 main reasons:
    1. You will study certain subject that has absolutely nothing to do with medicine and can be very demotivating.
    2. You will study for 5-6 years and you will only have the ability to prescribe drugs (not medicine or medications) unless you study further to specialize in a particular field. This was the breaking point for me.
So I transferred to dental school and im so happy with my choice because I'm as knowledgeable as any doctor, can also write prescription without any issue, work only in the oral cavity and make much more than any medical doctor whilst being my own boss.

Hey Kenji and Arun, happy to come across this, really needed this :)
Just a few weeks ago after my Obgyn appointment with a very inspiring doctor, I realized that there was this long-forgotten goal of mine, which is to become a doctor and save lives. I joined the St.John Ambulance when I was younger because I have always been passionate about helping people out and being there for them during some of their most vulnerable moments in life, but this goal of mine sort of drifted away after I stepped into the commerce stream for my senior high school years.
This goal of mine has been long-forgotten at the back of my mind until a few weeks ago I went to visit the obgyn for some emergency matters and met this gynaecologist that is absolutely friendly, calm, and patient. I wouldn't be going into too many details here about my appointment with her, but all I can say is that I was at my absolute worst state during the time she saw me, I felt extremely unwell, vulnerable, and was really anxious as it was my first time at the hospital by myself (+ never have I expected that my first visit to the hospital by myself would be the gynae's office haha). She managed to calm me down during the ultrasound and gave me sound advice on my issue. I'm not sure how to describe the feeling, but after the appointment with her it just struck me that hey I would like to be there for patients too when they're feeling vulnerable, it reminded me of why I joined St.John in the first place during high school, it reminded me of the goal I left off.
I'm currently 23 and in the final year of my accounting degree, I'd say it's a good career pathway in monetary terms, but I figured out that what I really wanna achieve in life is not just about getting a lot of money, I genuinely just want to help people out, and for that, I don't even mind about the amount of pay that I will be getting when I think about it. Hence, my plan right now is to, of course, focus on completing my current accounting degree now, I will still be in this field for maybe the next 5-10 years (to earn and save enough for med school), but I'll be taking up my foundations and basics in sciences at the same time. So hopefully by around 30, I will have gotten everything ready to get into med school, to learn what I'm passionate about, and to do what I'm passionate about for the next half of my life.
Also, I think I'll probably go for obgyn for my specialty too. When I was younger I've never thought or taken this specialty seriously until now that I've grown up and realized that it's a very meaningful specialty where you get to help not just patients who are at their most vulnerable moments, but you also get to be there to welcome new lives into the world (Obs).
I'm leaving this comment here first, and hopefully, in a few years' time, I'll be able to come back to this comment and let you all know that I've successfully made it. Also, to anyone out there that is considering taking up medicine as a second career in life, go for it! I'm sure we will be able to achieve what we want to!

In india after completing class 12 th .. whoever want to pursue medicine has to go through a exam called as NEET .......which has so high cutoff that out of 25 lakh students only 10 to 15 thousand get their chance to fulfill their dream ...... I am among them .. i passed my 12 th back in 2017 ..... But i had no intrest in being a doctor i was searching for other carrier option but didnt realise how time gone away ....so few years back i got serious about my carrier as a doctor and i apperaed in NEET exam ..... Scoring 610 out of 720 but their is no possibility that i would get any government collage on this mark despite coming under 25 thousand rank out of 25 lakh and private medicle degree goes around 120000 dollars which is no way i can offord ......... Next year i will be 25 ..... And still depandent on parents .......worst son i am to them ......not getting idea what to do next .

This August, I am going to the UK to study biomedical sciences. I didn't take A levels or IB. I took the foundation course so the only test I took is IELTS. Kenji's videos are making me consider entering medical school. Does anyone know if there is a way for international students to enter graduate entry medicine without an A-level score? I searched some schools but they all seemed to ask for A-level test scores or something equivalent. I think preparing A levels now to enter the standard medicine course is a bit late since I already used my money for the foundation course. I also don't think I will be able to get enough score to enter. (I've never studied English abroad.) One thing I have in mind is to take A levels while doing bio-med but I don't know what to start and I think it will eventually lower my undergraduate grade which is really important not just for entering graduate medicine but for my whole life of getting a job.

Do you think being older and going to med school affects what kind of speciality you’d want to do? Ie would you be less inclined to do a specialty like surgery or something which requires a long training programme? Have been thinking about this a lot recently

Kenji, you moved from Kenya to UK and you moved to UK around 14 or 15 years, you would be young at this time who do you live with at that time and which family member do you currently live with in UK because you said mum lives in Kenya, and Dad is Japanese, I know little about Kenya because am also an African, a Gambian, your capital is Nairobi and president is Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kenji, I am also a Biology student studying at the University of The Gambia, I will graduate in January 2023. I am planning to come to the UK and study medicine, but even if I get a place in medicine I will be charge as an international which is around £30,000 yearly am thinking funding this could be tedious.
