But even if their relationship was relatively healthy, I don't think I'm cut out for being with a doctor, even though I love my dad so much. Honestly, that's crucial for each relationship. Not just for the one with a doctor. Being stuck by the hip to your husband/wife or boyfriend/girlfriend is one of the top reasons any relationship fails.

My personal experience with dating a doctor is that showing interest in medical stuff can help a lot. My partner is still in med school so it might be a student thing but he always appreciates me asking about interesting things he learned. It's nice to be able to share your passion with someone.

Love that you addressed the difficultiesof having a relationship with a doctor. Funnily enough I'm also an artist/pharmacist, engaged to a doctor and boy is it challenging. If there is anything that can test your patience, it's that. Especially since most doctors aren't people-oriented like you, but very logical and rational, which can be a challenge for a more emotional partner. It sometimes feels like they unintentionally bury their emotional side because of all the horrors they see every day - from patients neglecting their bodies to the point of decay, to bringing the news of death to relatives.
I recommend checking out Kati Morton as well for psychological things. She's very informative and has a very positive attitude and I find her generally pleasant to watch, personally. I don't know for sure if she has any existing videos about anorexia but she takes requests last I checked.
@sandrine le blanc can you please tell me how to gain weight. Since i had my Gall bladder removed i have problems with digestion, specially rich, high protein food. What food actually makes us gain weight for people with high metabolism. I generally eat 3 eggs and chickens,bananas and dry fruits for breakfast , rice meals,lentils ,Fish for lunch and dinner, but i dont know where they disappear. I would be grateful if you could solve this mystery of weight gaining.Thank you.
I've dealt with it myself, a lot of times people have this disorder because they are scared of getting fat or they are depressed which turns off their stomach but they don't realize that their body needs food. That's the basic way of explaining it.
Misophonia is the WORST - every time I’m studying in a uni library and someone pulls out food, I have to race to plug in some music or remove myself from the room before I start crying in anger. It’s an anger I feel in my bones. But you can’t ask a stranger to chew with their mouth closed/breathe quieter!
theseshininglights dude same and my mom has allergies and it makes it really hard to spend time with her sometimes because how how loud she breathes and it just makes me seem rude or inconsiderate because I accidentally shoot people dirty looks when they chew loud or breathe loud and it kinda sucks
I used to throw a blanket over my sister like a tent to muffle her breathing because I was just sobbing from not being able to fall asleep. She still breathes so loudly, but luckily I don’t share a room with her anymore.

Thank you for addressing the biopsychosocial model of health. As a psych major, it urks me that many people have not encountered this model of health. I mean, this could be because of the replication crisis, or the inaccessibility of scientific literature. I also believe that a lot of this has to do with the encounters patients have with their doctors. There are some doctors who do recognise the the contributions of our social and psychological environment to our physical health, while others (the majority) deny or refuse the mind-body connection and the implications on treatment. Thank you for creating more awareness of this problem.
I have a mind-body disorder and I agree. It’s called Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome and it has to do with the nerves feeling pain when there is no real outside cause. It was treated with a mix of PT and psychological therapy called “pain psychology.” If it had been treated as only physical, it would have gotten much worse and pretty much encompassed my entire life.
The majority of us? Sorry, that's wrong. Even if we don't appear to you to recognise the relationship between the body and the mind, we were all trained to. We are ourselves simply stressed the fuck out by the day-to-day grind in modern healthcare, there simply isn't enough time for any of that. Screwed up schedules, ridiculous doctor to patient ratio, bureaucracy, emotional labor, burnout, you name it. Studying medicine, let alone psychiatry, isn't the same as majoring in psychology. I just had to quit the profession. Dr Mike is a family physician (and not a pediatric neurosurgeon) who looks passionate about his work, so he's extremely fortunate.
I'm not sure the majority of MD's in the 21st Century don't see the connection between mind and body but even if they do, the insurance and for-profit hospital systems definitely make it hard for them to carry out a psycho-social-physical treatment plan. I don't know about you, but my doc's have about 15 minutes to spend with me before they get yanked out to the next patient. Even psychiatrists are so over-booked that if they believe in a mind-body connection they don't have time to work with patients on cognitive issues; all they have time for is prescription writing. Plus... let's not forget about patient expectations. Patients have come to expect that everything from blood pressure to cancer can be controlled, if not cured, with a pill, treatment or therapy and use that as an excuse not to develop a healthy lifestyle that would improve mind, body, and spirit. In fact, Americans have come to expect that death is not inevitable. Death has become a failure of the patient's will to "fight," the physician's expertise, or a lack of research and technology. It's a messy, frustrating situation for everyone and I don't think we can point fingers at any single source of the mess; We all need to work together to get to a better place.
Wow, I was so surprised when the misophonia question came up. I’ve suffered from this for the majority of my life and it has impacted me in unimaginable ways. Due to how rare it is, none of my psychologists or psychiatrists had ever heard of it before meeting me. I’m sure I speak for anyone with this condition when I say thank you for bringing awareness to it, and for everyone when I say thank you for using your platform to do so much good.
Me too! The first example that i can think of is.. i don't have a single watch on my house 😂 i CAN'T stand the tic-toc.. or somebody making noises with fingernails on a table.. omg.. i can get so violent 😂
For me, it’s vacuums and lawn mowers, I get overwhelming feelings with those noises. Everyone laughs if I say something, but I genuinely can’t tolerate those noises.
I just googled Misophonia and looked into it deeper. It brought me to tears. I have a daughter that always had trouble with certain sounds. I’ve taken her to the doctor and she’s perfect. But with certain sounds she gets really aggravated. Now, it all makes sense. Im going to test my theory and if it works my next step is to take my information to her doctor. Thank you for everything. 'Cells at work' is honestly the most educational animation series. Based around the human body , how the cells in your body react to germs infects, viruses , disease and allergenic reactions with learnering about the cells &germs(what is its job) ... And ...its an Anime 🤷🏾♀️
I had never heard of Cells at Work before reading comments on this channel, but from what you say it makes me think about "Once Upon a Time... Life" that I watched as a kid in the late 80's/early 90's as a kid in France (according to wikipedia it was broadcasted in other countries too) I guess I should check it out
Thomas Furmanek if you had an immunology subject, ‘cells at work’ is a good recommendation. It gives you basic info of the cells and how they work and the work with creative interpretations and feels at some point.
I would be really interested to hear your thoughts on physical abuse and the emotional trauma that comes with it. I'd like to see an informative video on sexual violence, domestic violence, and childhood abuse and how it is dealt with in the medical field. Do you think doctors are well-trained in dealing with these kinds of cases? What kind of sensitivity training do you go through, if any? How do you approach this kind of situation if you suspect abuse? I'm curious to know what you think.
Good question would love to know the answer about this one because when i was sexually assaulted I had to deal with a Doctor who had me sit out in the open and ask me why I was there and when I had told him he didn't know what to do even though he had been a doctor for years and I also had to deal with a high up Register Nurse who one off the bosses and in charge off the other nurses basically said she said out loud where everyone could hear we don't have the rape kit she needs to go to another hospital it was something so personal that they had made public thankfully the paramedics and the other hospital were amazing the staff did everything in discreat
A lot. Although it's stressful, you learn so much about how to take care of other people. You're looked up as someone who people can turn to to help them get better. You realize there's so much we don't know yet about medicine, and it's still constantly changing. That smile you get when a patient thanks you for helping them feel better. Its just worth it.
Retired from medicine. Only woman in my class in 70s. Skipped grades, took tests, entered med school @ 19. Docs were literally the only men in my age group. I dated so many, I lost count: maybe 30ish? I was so passionate abt my field (trauma) that I was a TERRIBLE date. My friends called me “The Serial Dater”. I went into practice w a motto - NO DOC DATING. Took a while, but finally found software engineer w sense of humor AND high IQ. I was 46, he was 36. Life is good.🤷♀️
megan ho I didn’t skip grades in uni, I took 21 credits a semester, took “maymester”, took both summer semesters. This pushed me thru undergrad faster. I doubled up on classes in high school, took act,sat early, started uni at 16. I don’t recommend this, btw, I was very emotionally immature for uni. Luckily, some of the older girls “adopted” me, they were REALLY helpful. I had no social life to speak of, no sorority, no dating to speak of in undergrad. Just studying. I would not do it this way if I had known better. I was pushed *hard* by my grandfather, who paid my steep tuition.
About Cells at Work, the answer to your question is it’s both. It’s an anime and I love it and it’s also a very unique way to portray medical issues and what happens in the human body when things like illness, bacteria, disease, and infections happen. It’s funny but also it explains everything in a very unique way and watching I think it’s pretty accurate but I’m not a doctor so I’d really like you to see it and get your opinion. And it’s not anything you would expect. I’m sure you’d expect it to be a anime medical drama like a anime version of grey’s anatomy. It’s not like that at all, I’m sure you will be surprised. Anyway can’t wait to see you watch it!!

I suffer from mental health issues and study psychology and I like how you address the mind-body connection, because it's very important for people to know the mind can influence the body and vice versa. Too often mental health issues aren't taken seriously cause "it's only in your head". But it's not and I'm glad someone like you who may have some influence on people's views spreads that information 👌🏻
We love Cell At Work simply because biology could be really boring to some people but with this anime , they really changed the perception on how we see cells while still gives us A lot of useful information without a boring class which is really really interesting
My fiancé is a second year medical student and I’m finishing my master’s (we dated for four years prior) and it’s quite challenging sometimes. He is extremely busy as expected but I think in order to date a medical student you have to be independent and understanding of their extremely busy schedules. Sometimes I have gone an entire month without seeing him and I have to be understanding of that. (He currently lives 1.5 hours away too). He’s also almost constantly stressed so I think being able to be supportive really helps your partner too if you’re dating a med student. He literally called me on the phone 8 times today because he was so stressed about a huge test he just took for OMM. Anyways, hope this helps!
Thank you for bringing up the mind- body connection. I recently had an experience where I hurt my back but my pain was far worse than the physical issue because my brain was over- responding to the pain signals due to past trauma. And it took months to get a proper diagnosis and therapy. Mental health stigmas are difficult to combat.
I met my boyfriend when we were at highschool, he decided he wanted to become a doctor when we had almost 4 years together. It has been hard, especially now that he's an intern, but I truly believe we're meant to be. We'd just celebrate our 9th aniversary, couldn't be closer and happier. PS. Really enjoy your videos 😊
Me too! My boyfriend and I met in the beginning of high school, all throughout high school and so far 2 years into university, we’ve been dating and he’s also applied into the nursing school. Sure we don’t get to spend too much time together (I’m a music major and a lot of my time is devoted to practicing), but when we do, I couldn’t be more happy to be able to spend my life with him :) 5 year anniversary is coming up nov. 9, and I’m excited to count 100 more years with him hehe

Hey doctor Mike! How often do doctors catch a cold or get sick? Since they spend a lot of time around sick patients I would think it might be often. Or are their immune systems just really good at fighting it off?
lexi o'leary I’m a CNA and since the elderly immune systems are so much different, I get sick so easily. I don’t know about doctors but I think eventually you get immune to all these different sicknesses.

PA's can switch specialties with added schooling, as can we so I'm not sure where you're getting that info from but my attending was a dermatologist out of med school and re-specialized to oncology then completed a surgical Post-Doc. Any of us can also revert to General Practice or Peds. Most MDs love their specialty and stay in it, doesn't mean we don't have flexibility. Just FYI
Cells at work literally gives a view into a person immune system and what each cells' function is about. I'm a bio major at the moment and I swear to you, all that I have learned was IN THE SHOW. My one regret is that if it had came out while I was doing my Immunology course i would have aced it because I'm a visual learner. Cells at work EXPLAINS EVERYTHING and because its in anime form. I'm only a premed student right now but from what I know about microbiology and immunology, Cells at Work is pretty darn medically accurate! And it's really fun to watch :) Oh, and another medical doctor on youtube (Dr. Hope's Sick Notes) has reacted to two episodes and really loves it!
Hi Dr. Mike! To answer why I love Cells At Work, it's a really interesting way of doing science communication that I think works really well!! I love science communication in the form of comics and cartoons. I was already a fan of anime (less so in my adult years, because I'm busier than I used to be and just dont have the time to sit down and watch a lot of anime) but this one really caught my eye because its educational and informative without feeling too textbooky or overly embellished to the point of feeling purely fictitious and hurting the communication. I love the characters and its fun to imagine the cells living in your own body living their own lives working hard to keep you healthy. It makes me want to do a better job of taking care of my own body. :) I hope you enjoy it when you watch it! It's a very endearing show!
Misophonia -my teenage daughter suffers from this. As far as we can tell it stems from from her OCD. She also has severe anxiety so definitely a mind body correlation
Cells at work is a depiction of what he body does. It's a personification of the body, its cells, and events that may occur to the body. (Like infection)

God yes. More people are seeming to finally GET that certain sounds don't simply annoy me, it fills me with an all consuming, visceral rage. And often, anxiety that requires ativan taken immediately. It's not fun. It's not quirky or cute. It's friggin invasive.
I've been a nurse for almost 25 years. The evolution of the nurse doctor relationship in my small rural hospital has been amazing. For example, In nursing school, we were not allowed to ask a physician a question and they were allowed to humiliate you without consequences. We still have some older doctors like this, but the change to a true collaborative relationship over this time is amazing. Do you think it is the training or the generation change? Interested about your thoughts.
Its most likely the older generation encouraging that. I cant stress the importance of being nice to your nurses, and in doing so making patient care much more efficient. Both jobs have different roles and are both equally as important.
I've often wondered if the nursing and doctor professions should be completely integrated. Why shouldn't doctors get some initial experience as a nurse before progressing into medical school to become a generalist or specialist? And why should nurses have a completely separate career trajectory ending in APNs or NPs? Hell, NPs and PAs are close to functioning as medical residents anyways. Surely that's a good proving ground before launching into a medical fellowship. But ... This would never transpire. The educational institutions aren't set up this way. For that matter I don't entirely understand why allied health is a third set of career trajectories, but at least there's some ability to change careers between the allied health professions and nursing after completing an associates degree and getting some experience.

If you have a patient come in and you suspect they have an undiagnosed/untreated eating disorder, what do you do? Btw this year I'm celebrating 10 years since I was declared ED-free by my therapist. I'm completely symptom free and have been for years. Shout out to everyone who are struggling with eating disorders and their loved ones. There is help and support and you can get well!!
Cells at work is a great show because it takes a lot of concepts on health and medicine and it tells it in a really entertaining way, the show itself was written to be scientifically accurate, so a lot of viewers would like it if you reacted to the episodes and you elaborated on a lot of the concepts that are shown in the show. Ofc there is going to be creative liberties taken, but it's assumed most people watching are capable of recognising that cells do not talk, and they do not look like humans and that bacteria do not bleed. The fundamental ideas behind it though, like the responsibilities of the cells, their tools/features, are consistent with our understanding of cell biology. You shouldn't go into this show looking for a 100 % educational explanation of the human body, the show is aiming to first entertain and then to give the viewer highlights of a lot of the cool things that happen inside our bodies.
Your ABSOLUTELY correct doctor mike !!!! Mind and body is 💯 percent connected! there’s a HUGE need in medicine for the medicine field to be practicing this get more doctors to do more in the nutrition and mind and body ! always treat the mind as well as the body !!
Question: do you think it takes a certain kind of person to become a good doctor? Are there certain personnality types that definitely shouldn't go into medicine in your opinion?
I know you’re asking him, but after working with many doctors I have to give my two cents. In my opinion, anyone can be a good doctor, but should they be? Probably 90% of doctors have terrible communication skills and don’t know how to convince patients they really care and are listening. I work with many doctors and most of them are fine people once you get to know them. Here’s an example of a common issue I see: Dr Mike sort of mentioned this in the video, but, often, people have multiple problems and they all think it’s one thing. The doctor will say, “no they’re not connected,” but never explain why and that makes the patient upset. Every time. Anyone can go to school and study medicine. A doctor can be a genius, and still be a good doctor, but that lack of patience and attentiveness will break that connection you should have with your patients.
@@sailorarwen6101 A lot of doctors are unhappy when you won't take what they say as gospel and get upset when you ask questions to try and understand. They really, really need to teach them how to actually communicate and have empathy.
I can be patient as long as my future partner is faithful and truthful with me. He would be a god send gift . I would be so happy. I love the Pride and Prejudice movie. That is a glimpse into real love. Ahhh.
Ooh, I really appreciate your approach to mental AND physical health. My psychiatrist actually discovered that I have a thyroid disorder through a routine blood test he ran at the beginning of my treatment for postpartum depression. A thyroid disorder can actually both mimic and cause mental health disorders like depression and anxiety disorders, so that discovery actually helped me get off the psychiatric drugs faster as my endocrinologist treated my thyroid at the same time.

I love the question about the physical diagnosis being a mental diagnosis. It’s actually amazing you went into detail about how the mind and body work together. I am on track to becoming a social worker and am very intrigued on how medical professionals come up with treatment when there are so many factors included. For example the environment a patient is in, their perspective on modern medicine and health care access. Keep up the extraordinary work Dr.Mike! You really seem to want to continue learning and are passionate to your field of work. If social workers and health care professionals could learn off each other more often, it will help us give each other more perspectives on different approaches we can treat both mental health and overall health since they work alongside each other. All in all, give our patients/clients the care they deserve to be the best versions of themselves.

I dated a doctor once and besides feeling utterly inferior it was actually nice having someone there but never having to deal with nonstop communication . We both gave each other space and it was honestly the most adult relationship I’ve ever been in.
I have social anxiety, this may seem whatever but I like watching your videos whenever I’m experiencing a panic attack or am overly anxious because your voice is relaxing, so thank you. Cells at work is less of a medical show and of an educational show about biology. It shows the human body as a giant City all the cells are anthropomorphize and it basically just shows what they do on a daily basis. Its funny and very accurate.
Cells at work is just amazing how they've managed to incorporate all these medical terms and such inside of an amazing show that doesn't seem like it's just giving you facts, but rather a show that manages to entertain you and teach without you realizing. I try to keep my mind & body in the best possible place because I have noticed I actually am less likely to get sick with being in the best mindset. If I do get sick I tend to recover a lot quicker when I am happy. Every day we are given a choice and I choose to be happy! 😁
I'm currently dating a doctor MD /psychiatrist. We have been dating for about a year. And I have learned from him #1 quality time is great be creative be adaptable . allow him to do what he loves being a dr.brings you closer . Remember he's in a very highly stressful job it's always a good idea to see if you can do anything to help him when he's had a difficult day . He's a person he has needs just like everyone else

I love Cells at Work cuz I am a huge anime fan but as a person who has taken a biology class in high school, it’s so accurate to the textbook. Usually these things that are educational yet entertaining isn’t that true to the information but this show surprisingly is. Highly recommend it to you 👍🏻
I am also a huge anime fan which helps me love the show! I'm also a medical laboratory scientist by trade and watching it makes me wish it had been around while I was taking hematology courses because it's so accurate even if it heavily features comedy. Plus the platelets are just adorable.

My mom is a doctor and struggles with this, there seems to be a lot of animosity toward doctors/health care professionals of late, it’s disappointing to me that there’s little doctors/nurses can do to respond/protect themselves from abuse/poor behavior. @@sarahward4378 Some people have very, very good reasons for that animosity. It's been proven that women and women's pain aren't taken seriously. The bias against overweight to obese people is also well documented, even when the problems they're trying to get help for are _not_ related to weight. Or medication is thrown at a problem instead of trying to solve it. There are also a lot of doctors that won't admit when they don't know something, so instead they'll claim it's all in the persons head. I won't claim there aren't bad patients, because of course there are, but try to consider that some of that anger is quite valid.
You cant be needy or insecure if you date a dr. You HAVE to gave a full life of your own. Your sharing him with the world. His heart is in healing- he might be drained and very tired at the end of a long day . Let him sleep,give him a back rub. A great meal and Give him space. This goes for nurses too. Positive energy ,is healing.
Cells at work was actually very informative in a fun and entertaining way. It had humor and some action which kept me watching but along the way I learned a lot about the human body and how cells function.
I lived with a doctor for a few years, yeah, you need to be very flexible, very understanding, and frankly you need to have the same desire to want others to be ok, if you can't picture yourself alone on big days from time to time, or aren't able to spend those days with other loved ones and be ok that your partner isn't there, then maybe you can handle it. I think it takes a special kind of person to deal with having a spouse that puts strangers first from time to time. It's a life of service, it deserves a lot of respect and understanding.

My personal experience with dating a doctor is that showing interest in medical stuff can help a lot. My partner is still in med school so it might be a student thing but he always appreciates me asking about interesting things he learned. It's nice to be able to share your passion with someone.

Love that you addressed the difficultiesof having a relationship with a doctor. Funnily enough I'm also an artist/pharmacist, engaged to a doctor and boy is it challenging. If there is anything that can test your patience, it's that. Especially since most doctors aren't people-oriented like you, but very logical and rational, which can be a challenge for a more emotional partner. It sometimes feels like they unintentionally bury their emotional side because of all the horrors they see every day - from patients neglecting their bodies to the point of decay, to bringing the news of death to relatives.

I've dealt with it myself, a lot of times people have this disorder because they are scared of getting fat or they are depressed which turns off their stomach but they don't realize that their body needs food. That's the basic way of explaining it.

Misophonia is the WORST - every time I’m studying in a uni library and someone pulls out food, I have to race to plug in some music or remove myself from the room before I start crying in anger. It’s an anger I feel in my bones. But you can’t ask a stranger to chew with their mouth closed/breathe quieter!

I used to throw a blanket over my sister like a tent to muffle her breathing because I was just sobbing from not being able to fall asleep. She still breathes so loudly, but luckily I don’t share a room with her anymore.

Thank you for addressing the biopsychosocial model of health. As a psych major, it urks me that many people have not encountered this model of health. I mean, this could be because of the replication crisis, or the inaccessibility of scientific literature. I also believe that a lot of this has to do with the encounters patients have with their doctors. There are some doctors who do recognise the the contributions of our social and psychological environment to our physical health, while others (the majority) deny or refuse the mind-body connection and the implications on treatment. Thank you for creating more awareness of this problem.
I have a mind-body disorder and I agree. It’s called Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome and it has to do with the nerves feeling pain when there is no real outside cause. It was treated with a mix of PT and psychological therapy called “pain psychology.” If it had been treated as only physical, it would have gotten much worse and pretty much encompassed my entire life.
The majority of us? Sorry, that's wrong. Even if we don't appear to you to recognise the relationship between the body and the mind, we were all trained to. We are ourselves simply stressed the fuck out by the day-to-day grind in modern healthcare, there simply isn't enough time for any of that. Screwed up schedules, ridiculous doctor to patient ratio, bureaucracy, emotional labor, burnout, you name it. Studying medicine, let alone psychiatry, isn't the same as majoring in psychology. I just had to quit the profession. Dr Mike is a family physician (and not a pediatric neurosurgeon) who looks passionate about his work, so he's extremely fortunate.

I'm not sure the majority of MD's in the 21st Century don't see the connection between mind and body but even if they do, the insurance and for-profit hospital systems definitely make it hard for them to carry out a psycho-social-physical treatment plan. I don't know about you, but my doc's have about 15 minutes to spend with me before they get yanked out to the next patient. Even psychiatrists are so over-booked that if they believe in a mind-body connection they don't have time to work with patients on cognitive issues; all they have time for is prescription writing. Plus... let's not forget about patient expectations. Patients have come to expect that everything from blood pressure to cancer can be controlled, if not cured, with a pill, treatment or therapy and use that as an excuse not to develop a healthy lifestyle that would improve mind, body, and spirit. In fact, Americans have come to expect that death is not inevitable. Death has become a failure of the patient's will to "fight," the physician's expertise, or a lack of research and technology. It's a messy, frustrating situation for everyone and I don't think we can point fingers at any single source of the mess; We all need to work together to get to a better place.

Wow, I was so surprised when the misophonia question came up. I’ve suffered from this for the majority of my life and it has impacted me in unimaginable ways. Due to how rare it is, none of my psychologists or psychiatrists had ever heard of it before meeting me. I’m sure I speak for anyone with this condition when I say thank you for bringing awareness to it, and for everyone when I say thank you for using your platform to do so much good.

For me, it’s vacuums and lawn mowers, I get overwhelming feelings with those noises. Everyone laughs if I say something, but I genuinely can’t tolerate those noises.
I just googled Misophonia and looked into it deeper. It brought me to tears. I have a daughter that always had trouble with certain sounds. I’ve taken her to the doctor and she’s perfect. But with certain sounds she gets really aggravated. Now, it all makes sense. Im going to test my theory and if it works my next step is to take my information to her doctor. Thank you for everything. Good question would love to know the answer about this one because when i was sexually assaulted I had to deal with a Doctor who had me sit out in the open and ask me why I was there and when I had told him he didn't know what to do even though he had been a doctor for years and I also had to deal with a high up Register Nurse who one off the bosses and in charge off the other nurses basically said she said out loud where everyone could hear we don't have the rape kit she needs to go to another hospital it was something so personal that they had made public thankfully the paramedics and the other hospital were amazing the staff did everything in discreat

A lot. Although it's stressful, you learn so much about how to take care of other people. You're looked up as someone who people can turn to to help them get better. You realize there's so much we don't know yet about medicine, and it's still constantly changing. That smile you get when a patient thanks you for helping them feel better. Its just worth it.

Retired from medicine. Only woman in my class in 70s. Skipped grades, took tests, entered med school @ 19. Docs were literally the only men in my age group. I dated so many, I lost count: maybe 30ish? I was so passionate abt my field (trauma) that I was a TERRIBLE date. My friends called me “The Serial Dater”. I went into practice w a motto - NO DOC DATING. Took a while, but finally found software engineer w sense of humor AND high IQ. I was 46, he was 36. Life is good.🤷♀️

megan ho I didn’t skip grades in uni, I took 21 credits a semester, took “maymester”, took both summer semesters. This pushed me thru undergrad faster. I doubled up on classes in high school, took act,sat early, started uni at 16. I don’t recommend this, btw, I was very emotionally immature for uni. Luckily, some of the older girls “adopted” me, they were REALLY helpful. I had no social life to speak of, no sorority, no dating to speak of in undergrad. Just studying. I would not do it this way if I had known better. I was pushed *hard* by my grandfather, who paid my steep tuition.

About Cells at Work, the answer to your question is it’s both. It’s an anime and I love it and it’s also a very unique way to portray medical issues and what happens in the human body when things like illness, bacteria, disease, and infections happen. It’s funny but also it explains everything in a very unique way and watching I think it’s pretty accurate but I’m not a doctor so I’d really like you to see it and get your opinion. And it’s not anything you would expect. I’m sure you’d expect it to be a anime medical drama like a anime version of grey’s anatomy. It’s not like that at all, I’m sure you will be surprised. I suffer from mental health issues and study psychology and I like how you address the mind-body connection, because it's very important for people to know the mind can influence the body and vice versa. Too often mental health issues aren't taken seriously cause "it's only in your head". My fiancé is a second year medical student and I’m finishing my master’s (we dated for four years prior) and it’s quite challenging sometimes. He is extremely busy as expected but I think in order to date a medical student you have to be independent and understanding of their extremely busy schedules. Sometimes I have gone an entire month without seeing him and I have to be understanding of that. (He currently lives 1.5 hours away too). He’s also almost constantly stressed so I think being able to be supportive really helps your partner too if you’re dating a med student. He literally called me on the phone 8 times today because he was so stressed about a huge test he just took for OMM. Anyways, hope this helps!

Thank you for bringing up the mind- body connection. I recently had an experience where I hurt my back but my pain was far worse than the physical issue because my brain was over- responding to the pain signals due to past trauma. And it took months to get a proper diagnosis and therapy. Mental health stigmas are difficult to combat.
I met my boyfriend when we were at highschool, he decided he wanted to become a doctor when we had almost 4 years together. It has been hard, especially now that he's an intern, but I truly believe we're meant to be. We'd just celebrate our 9th aniversary, couldn't be closer and happier.

Hey doctor Mike! How often do doctors catch a cold or get sick? Since they spend a lot of time around sick patients I would think it might be often. Or are their immune systems just really good at fighting it off?

lexi o'leary I’m a CNA and since the elderly immune systems are so much different, I get sick so easily. I don’t know about doctors but I think eventually you get immune to all these different sicknesses.
Hardly catch a cold or get sick but I got a bad skin infection once 😞

PA's can switch specialties with added schooling, as can we so I'm not sure where you're getting that info from but my attending was a dermatologist out of med school and re-specialized to oncology then completed a surgical Post-Doc. Any of us can also revert to General Practice or Peds. Most MDs love their specialty and stay in it, doesn't mean we don't have flexibility. Just FYI
Cells at work literally gives a view into a person immune system and what each cells' function is about. I'm a bio major at the moment and I swear to you, all that I have learned was IN THE SHOW. My one regret is that if it had came out while I was doing my Immunology course i would have aced it because I'm a visual learner.

I'm only a premed student right now but from what I know about microbiology and immunology, Cells at Work is pretty darn medically accurate! And it's really fun to watch :) Oh, and another medical doctor on youtube (Dr. Hope's Sick Notes) has reacted to two episodes and really loves it!
Hi Dr. Mike! To answer why I love Cells At Work, it's a really interesting way of doing science communication that I think works really well!! I love science communication in the form of comics and cartoons. I was already a fan of anime (less so in my adult years, because I'm busier than I used to be and just dont have the time to sit down and watch a lot of anime) but this one really caught my eye because its educational and informative without feeling too textbooky or overly embellished to the point of feeling purely fictitious and hurting the communication. I love the characters and its fun to imagine the cells living in your own body living their own lives working hard to keep you healthy. It makes me want to do a better job of taking care of my own body. :) I hope you enjoy it when you watch it! It's a very endearing show!

I've been a nurse for almost 25 years. The evolution of the nurse doctor relationship in my small rural hospital has been amazing. For example, In nursing school, we were not allowed to ask a physician a question and they were allowed to humiliate you without consequences. We still have some older doctors like this, but the change to a true collaborative relationship over this time is amazing. Do you think it is the training or the generation change? Interested about your thoughts.
Its most likely the older generation encouraging that. I cant stress the importance of being nice to your nurses, and in doing so making patient care much more efficient. Both jobs have different roles and are both equally as important.
I've often wondered if the nursing and doctor professions should be completely integrated. Why shouldn't doctors get some initial experience as a nurse before progressing into medical school to become a generalist or specialist? And why should nurses have a completely separate career trajectory ending in APNs or NPs? Hell, NPs and PAs are close to functioning as medical residents anyways. Surely that's a good proving ground before launching into a medical fellowship.
But ... This would never transpire. The educational institutions aren't set up this way.
For that matter I don't entirely understand why allied health is a third set of career trajectories, but at least there's some ability to change careers between the allied health professions and nursing after completing an associates degree and getting some experience.
Hi Dr. Mike! It's so nice to see your dedication and passion for medicine in every episode of your channel. I have a question. If you have a patient come in and you suspect they have an undiagnosed/untreated eating disorder, what do you do? Btw this year I'm celebrating 10 years since I was declared ED-free by my therapist. I'm completely symptom free and have been for years. Shout out to everyone who are struggling with eating disorders and their loved ones. There is help and support and you can get well!!
Cells at work is a great show because it takes a lot of concepts on health and medicine and it tells it in a really entertaining way, the show itself was written to be scientifically accurate, so a lot of viewers would like it if you reacted to the episodes and you elaborated on a lot of the concepts that are shown in the show. Hope that helps. :)

Ofc there is going to be creative liberties taken, but it's assumed most people watching are capable of recognising that cells do not talk, and they do not look like humans and that bacteria do not bleed. The fundamental ideas behind it though, like the responsibilities of the cells, their tools/features, are consistent with our understanding of cell biology. You shouldn't go into this show looking for a 100 % educational explanation of the human body, the show is aiming to first entertain and then to give the viewer highlights of a lot of the cool things that happen inside our bodies.

I know you’re asking him, but after working with many doctors I have to give my two cents. In my opinion, anyone can be a good doctor, but should they be? Probably 90% of doctors have terrible communication skills and don’t know how to convince patients they really care and are listening. I work with many doctors and most of them are fine people once you get to know them. Here’s an example of a common issue I see: Dr Mike sort of mentioned this in the video, but, often, people have multiple problems and they all think it’s one thing. The doctor will say, “no they’re not connected,” but never explain why and that makes the patient upset. Every time. Anyone can go to school and study medicine. A doctor can be a genius, and still be a good doctor, but that lack of patience and attentiveness will break that connection you should have with your patients.
@@sailorarwen6101 A lot of doctors are unhappy when you won't take what they say as gospel and get upset when you ask questions to try and understand. They really, really need to teach them how to actually communicate and have empathy.

Ooh, I really appreciate your approach to mental AND physical health. My psychiatrist actually discovered that I have a thyroid disorder through a routine blood test he ran at the beginning of my treatment for postpartum depression. A thyroid disorder can actually both mimic and cause mental health disorders like depression and anxiety disorders, so that discovery actually helped me get off the psychiatric drugs faster as my endocrinologist treated my thyroid at the same time.

Stressing your eyes heightens your chances of bad vision because your eyes get used to the stressed state.

I love the question about the physical diagnosis being a mental diagnosis. It’s actually amazing you went into detail about how the mind and body work together. I am on track to becoming a social worker and am very intrigued on how medical professionals come up with treatment when there are so many factors included. For example the environment a patient is in, their perspective on modern medicine and health care access. Keep up the extraordinary work Dr.Mike! You really seem to want to continue learning and are passionate to your field of work. If social workers and health care professionals could learn off each other more often, it will help us give each other more perspectives on different approaches we can treat both mental health and overall health since they work alongside each other. All in all, give our patients/clients the care they deserve to be the best versions of themselves.

I dated a doctor once and besides feeling utterly inferior it was actually nice having someone there but never having to deal with nonstop communication . We both gave each other space and it was honestly the most adult relationship I’ve ever been in.

Cells at work is less of a medical show and of an educational show about biology. It shows the human body as a giant City all the cells are anthropomorphize and it basically just shows what they do on a daily basis. Its funny and very accurate.

I try to keep my mind & body in the best possible place because I have noticed I actually am less likely to get sick with being in the best mindset. If I do get sick I tend to recover a lot quicker when I am happy. Every day we are given a choice and I choose to be happy! 😁

I love Cells at Work cuz I am a huge anime fan but as a person who has taken a biology class in high school, it’s so accurate to the textbook. Usually these things that are educational yet entertaining isn’t that true to the information but this show surprisingly is. Highly recommend it to you 👍🏻
I am also a huge anime fan which helps me love the show! I'm also a medical laboratory scientist by trade and watching it makes me wish it had been around while I was taking hematology courses because it's so accurate even if it heavily features comedy. Plus the platelets are just adorable.

My mom is a doctor and struggles with this, there seems to be a lot of animosity toward doctors/health care professionals of late, it’s disappointing to me that there’s little doctors/nurses can do to respond/protect themselves from abuse/poor behavior. Interested to see what Dr. Mike says, also congrats on becoming a doctor!

@@sarahward4378 Some people have very, very good reasons for that animosity. It's been proven that women and women's pain aren't taken seriously. The bias against overweight to obese people is also well documented, even when the problems they're trying to get help for are _not_ related to weight. Or medication is thrown at a problem instead of trying to solve it. There are also a lot of doctors that won't admit when they don't know something, so instead they'll claim it's all in the persons head. I won't claim there aren't bad patients, because of course there are, but try to consider that some of that anger is quite valid.

I lived with a doctor for a few years, yeah, you need to be very flexible, very understanding, and frankly you need to have the same desire to want others to be ok, if you can't picture yourself alone on big days from time to time, or aren't able to spend those days with other loved ones and be ok that your partner isn't there, then maybe you can handle it. I think it takes a special kind of person to deal with having a spouse that puts strangers first from time to time. It's a life of service, it deserves a lot of respect and understanding.
