Im writing this from the uk, great knowledge as always. Your road systems are so good in the us i.e. even and odd numbers equating directions. We only have junction numbers on our motorways.
US Interstate exit numbers are also numbered with their mile-marker - e.g. Exit 220 is 220 miles from the eastern state border, and 10 miles from exit 230. Wyatt's description of highway numbering applies to the Interstate Highway system. It's reversed for "US Highways", which are a step below. The hierarchy of road systems in the US is: Interstate, US Highway, State Highway, County Road, City Street
You also have A or B symbol, which tells you are either heading Clockwise or Anticlockwise direction respectively, eg M62 A Eastbound, M62 B westbound or the other way round, cannot remember.
Thank you so much for this information. I have no idea about how to tell where north south etc is I either missed this class or wasn't paying attention at all.
Thank you SO much for this video. I've looked up this basic info before but it never made much sense until YOU explained it. I hate when I'm in my car leaving a store or event no where near where I live and GPS says, "head west" and I'm like🤷♀️. If I'm not moving, or not moving fast enough, GPS won't tell me which way to turn , to go west and I end up having to make u- turns and exit the highway cause I'm going the wrong way🤦 thank you!
Sun fails on a cloudy day. Try to orient yourself using landmarks. Large mountains, valleys, lakes. In Japan I used the unique rust pattern on a water tower. When exploring I either try concentric circles or make all right turns till I return or deadend. Back tracking should be all lefts. Once you have a trail you know you can make side trips to increase comfort. Scrawling a quick route chart, making stone cairns or scratching arrows at forks keeps it from all looking the same if you get confused. Red ribbons work better than bread crumbs. If lost get high...and look around. Drive up a hill, a parking structure or climb a tree. Between gps and Google Earth route finding is becoming a lost art.
Tbh I'm horrible with directions, I'm a journeyman electrician and there will be times when I have to set something on the east side of the building, or what not, and I have to ask which way is east 😅. I have the day off, and I'm taking the time to learn this
In other easy way to remember the numbers going up or down is reading left to right so if you start all the way on the left in California and you read to the right toward New England the numbers are going up. But then I thought we didn't start on that side we founded America on the opposite side so you would think the numbers would start low there and go higher the opposite direction if things were to make perfect sense. Or maybe California was the first state to start making highways that would make sense or somewhere near there well those are my thoughts have a good day
I usually just look around at what the signs are and what land marks there are in the land, like i can fully give a 4x4 tour of my town and ive only had a car for 6 months
I still did not understand. Yes, im terrible with directions. Can anyone please explain😫im a new driver too...so it will be a great help. Thanks !!! I was confused when he said, "if it's the morning and if the sun is in my riht, im heading to the north"....is this true?
The only direction I'll be traveling now is West, trying to get the hell out of NYC while I still can.
