My first (and possibly last) game review-esque video is here! Wanted to do this ever since I found out that Matchbox: Driving Adventure is a thing, so here it is. Let me know your thoughts!
This would be great as a free mobile game. For £35 this is a bad joke. "Over 10 customisable vehicles to choose from!" Mate, Unreal Tournament 2004 had over 10 vehicles and it wasn't even a racing game, do better. Mattel really have no idea what to do with Matchbox.
Mattel seems to kinda forget they have a lot of their brands, at least with Matchbox, they let whoever is in charge just do what they want, and that person in charge is actually pretty good and has been releasing some banger diecast cars. As for this game though, yeah it was clearly just some Mattel executive remembering they have the brand and being like, "Oh yeah, make that into a game."
@@cartoonist_keyagree, Matchbox cars are so good and I hope they release more castings of regular civilian cars/regular cars. This game was probably decided by Mattel themselves
@@huatseng6037 They definitely are and will continue to for a long time to come, at least from what I can tell. Personally though, I just want them to do some more variations of the Powell Sport Pickup casting.
"The graphics look like a PS4 launch game" Honestly it reminded me of a Wii game. Hell I'd even say there are Wii games emulated in HD that exceed this graphically.
Oh yeah, that one is such an old school legend of a HotWheels game. I should dig through my collection again and see how many vehicles from that one I have as diecasts.
"Now, just as a quick sidenote for real-life diecasts, I actually prefer Matchbox, because more real-life cars..." I'm pretty much the same. I'm not really loyal to one brand over the other, but I do definitely prefer the real-world cars. I saw that Rivian animation in the first minute of the video, and it gave me false hope that that was gameplay footage and there would be licensed cars. But no, instead the Matchbox game looks like a fancy browser game.
Yeah, that's a pretty good way to sum it up. I feel like if I wanted the ultimate experience, I should just make a track out of cardboard or something and use my own diecast cars, lol
Absolutely! Wouldn't have even been hard to do, Matchbox/Mattel does already have all the licensing agreements to all the companies, it wouldn't have been to hard to work out the finer details and get some Ford or Bentley in the game.
there's been a couple matchbox games, Matchbox Motor City Patrol, Matchbox: Rescue Rigs, & Matchbox Missions: Air, Land, and Sea Rescue/Emergency Response
I'd call them all borderline games, as they aren't much, but yes, they do exist. I feel like they may have had done more if Tonka hadn't had such a huge section of the market at the time.
@cartoonist_key I have one as a white version, so I remember that it is. I have a whole chest full of Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars. Even the Octane from Rocket League.
I noticed that a few of the track layouts look like certain real-life tracks with some minor warping of the outline An ice track looks like Interlagos squished Beach like the Nurburgring GP circuit bent a bit and the north part altered Lava looks like a bulbous edit of Tsukuba... I'm sure if I looked hard enough the others would show familiarities too.
They don't want to pay the licensing fee. Which, depending on the manufacturer, isn't really that much, I know GM and Ford are both pretty chill on the licensing front, and Mattel already has all the connections, it really wouldn't have been that hard from them. But all they care about is money so obviously this was gonna happen.
Fully agree on that one! Definitely going to pick it up as well when it goes on sale, perhaps I could get Steam remote connect or whatever it's called to work on it, that might be a fun option if that actually works.
I think you were way too hard on this game. Yes, comparing this to Hot Wheels Unleashed this game is lacking, but on it's own merits, it is a competent racing game, with great controls, and fun tracks! Great game to play with my kid!
Yeah, for what it is, it's not a terrible game, it does hold up pretty well on it's own. However, for the price they're asking, it should have been a much better game. That's my logic.
Matchbox as a brand has a greater focus on licensed models, compared to Hot Wheels, considering Matchbox's selection typically includes a more pedestrian selection. With Hot Wheels, it's all about fast cars that look cool, while Matchbox has more everyday cars. Aside from that, it's definitely a more adventure-like brand compared to the racing of Hot Wheels. I could see a Matchbox game being more open-world like, focused on exploration, and featuring a wide variety of licensed models (as well as some pre-Mattel models just for a bit of spice).
All those reasons are why I honestly love Matchbox, favourite diecast brand by far. It's to bad though that it couldn't be properly recreated as a game. They could have done so much better.
Shit dude, we figured out this "worldwide adventure racing game" thing back with Choro-Q HG 2 (That's Everywhere Road Trip for the Yanks) in the PS2, just build on that formula and you'd get a pretty decent game.
Outside of the not actually playing the game part this was a real good review, entertaining and a nice voice. I can see you going far, Ill check out your other videos later today.
I didn't even know there was a new Matchbox game avaialbe to play. Then again, when you're being compared to a more popular brand like Hotwheels, can you blame them (and this is coming from a Hotwheels fan going back to my childhood).
They've always been lurking in the background (for the most part as a more offroad and big truck kids alternative to HotWheels, especially through the mid-2010's) but have actually been doing really well as of recently. The current models they have are really good, a lot of real life cars, mostly city cars, not-so-crazy sports cars, and a lot of underappreciated classics.
Can't speak to the new games, but the first Hotwheels Unleashed used a stock music pack for its soundtrack; I've heard the same songs on RUclips videos. I wouldn't be surprised if the new one did the same. What about the Cadillac Cimarron?
It used stock music for the menu music as far as I know All the race music are tracks made by Sharks in Venice, and even have albums named Unleashed for the first game, and Unleashed 2 for the second
I can't blame matchbox game for the lack of cars as they do have a lot of licensed car and few license cars though some of them are actual real vehicles.

Fully agree, Custom Otto would have made an awesome addition, Redline or regular. Honestly, they're probably just working on a next title, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a HotWheels Unleashed 3 sometimes next year.
Next game for both is a game called hot box or match wheels where you can race both match box and hot wheels together to find out who is the better toy car brand
I really, really, really dislike usage of AI, for its million negatives it has like 1 positive and even then it comes at the cost of replacing actual talent. I would rather have the Outright Games studio hire their janitor for the voices or get a guy from Fiver or something to do the music
Yeah, it just always comes off as lazy, no matter when and who uses it. I mean, all these companies have heaps of cash just lying around, they can totally hire somebody to physically do the tasks.
No way you can be saying the soundtrack in hotwheels unleashed is good, it consists of like six unlicensed royalty free songs I’ve heard like a million times. In fact, I feel like if the soundtrack was more varied, it would help hide how much track and map reusage is in this game, but since it doesn’t all my memories of playing hotwheels unleashed’s campaign are a blur with no stand out moments or “milestones” so to speak.
Personally, I just really like it when a game has music that doesn't have lyrics (with very few exceptions), and I personally really like the Unleashed soundtrack, I have the majority of it in my own playlist. Everybody's gonna have a different take on this though, you stick to yours and I'll stick to mine.
I mean, as far as games go, yes, yes it did. Though the actual cars themselves have been good, lot of great licensed vehicles I never expected to see as a diecast.
