I'm just a homebody, but I enjoy your deep perspective of common sense and street smarts about traveling and living abroad. It just comes back to the grass is not always greener on the other side! Blessing to you!!

I'm a non-senior male and live in the 'rich' state of Massachusetts in a quiet middle-income small town. My home was once robbed, our cars were broken into and robbed on another occasion, and I was robbed of something out of my house in my previous small MA town, and had two different items stolen out of my yard, each by different people. Also, while visiting Boston, I was mugged. That's seven different types of theft. These things can happen anywhere you live, to anyone, at any age or sex, no matter where you are living or visiting.

Living abroad is voluntary. It is also like former foreigners living now in the US. It work both ways. Take it or leave it.

And if you come back to the States you’ll leave again when you see how much everything costs here now.

Most of those people you meet in those countries have kids, jobs, school, etc. They're busy or wrapped up in their own lives. Add language issues and you're a curiosity at best.

Americans also need to stop flaunting their money, posting on social medua their amazement about low prices, expecting to bargain for everything and expecting rock bottom prices in heavily-tourist areas

Spain by far is the worse place for gouging the "gringo". On a side note, back in the 90's Spain would call the american/english tourists "Guiris" but now in 2024 the spanish europeans have adopted the south american term "Gringo", probably because Spain is now filled with south american immigrants. Anyhow I thought the gouging was bad in the 90's but it's worse than ever in Spain in 2024. In fact Spain is even having protests against "tourist" now, but really it is protests against "Gringos" since they still welcome south american/north african immigrants. Spain has a strange and complex xenophobia, against certain races.
