Some of us who have moved abroad had to because living in the USA was too expensve. I am now 10 years in Latin America and cannot envision myself ever returning to the USA. True. some folks just cannot seem to really integrate, but some of us can and we enjoy our lives. I have lots of local friends who also look out for me much more than any firends or neighbors in the USA.

Same everywhere. I've lived many places in the US. Some places neighbors were great, other places I never knew a neighbor's name. Move 2 blocks away and different experience. Glad you found a good place but that's unrelated to what country you're in.

Perfect. I've lived many places and hated each for the first couple months. Then I adapt and end up hating to move away. When people say a place is bad generally it tells me more about them than the place. No country has all good places or all bad.

Before living abroad, I’ve learned to be aware of many reasons others have given up being an expat. Issues they’ve encountered, understanding my tolerance levels being a veteran, living abroad before, adapting and wondering what trade offs am I getting for a benefit, if it’s really that bad. Also realizing I’ve met others that are benefiting living abroad and enjoying it, compared to those who are not after awhile. In the US, I could never own a home where I’d like to, and I’m not settling anywhere. Some prefer isolaion, some prefer not. Some only travel mostly within the same region, some prefer other continents. Moving to Medellin next week with my partner from Cali. She still works, but travels through the region so that’s a chance for me to explore an unexpected location. I understand it’s not cheap in certain cities abroad. The place we’re moving in is a 3 bedroom 4 bath. It’s $880, but still $900 cheaper than I use to pay in Maryland. The traffic is crazy but the roads are better there than Cali. I’d rather pay a little more for comforts, in a growing city where I could possibly purchase something and still be in the city. I like having people around. Food is still way cheaper and healthier than in the USA when it comes to going out to eat. I saved $2500 per month after leaving the DC area after retirement 2 years ago, I can’t imagine paying that much more again for less of a lifestyle, less travel, less dining, less events, more gas. Which is $32 a fill up here, but $66 in the US or more, or can take a Uber which is way cheaper than in the US. I think comfort levels and what you expect outside of your home makes a difference. If I was to stay at home mostly I would prefer to be in the United States. I want to explore some of the world. It’s very difficult to do that there unless I owned my home. Maybe one day from saving here I may want to purchase something back home, but I highly doubt it, but who knows. I don’t want to just go to only cheap locations, or only two times a year. I think it can boil down to if you plan to spend more time at home, or outside of your home.

I've found a way that works for me. Work half the year at a seasonal job in a national park in the US, then spend the other half of the year traveling and experiencing new places around the world. I get to experience some amazing and beautiful parts of the US, save money over the summer/fall months, then get to scratch my travel itch. I can see family in a few places in the states while I'm working there. I know it can be challenging living overseas for the long term. I lived and taught English in South Korea and Shanghai, and this gave me a sense for what it might be like to be an expat for a few years. I'm enjoying the flexibility I have now with this nomadic life. For anyone considering moving overseas, I recommend taking exploratory trips, and spending a few months in a place you're interested in. It's the only way to know for sure if it's the right move for you

This is why I prefer living in Colombia, but traveling outside of the continent. I prefer Europe, and Asia, and take part in experiences, and activities. My partner travels for work within South America so I tag along to explore here automatically since I’m retired. My play ground is the rest of the world. Of course I would not be happy just exploring the same region all the time. To me that’s like only traveling within the USA, to many familiar things. I also rather not travel as often. But just enjoy local friends on a daily basis and family. Going to often can burn you out.

Lived in Costa Rica for 8 years ,I was robbed many times and beat up by 4 people and ended up with a major operation I had to go to the U.S. for surgery. I called the police and the people said I tried to rob there house and I was arrested. I was always waiting for a home invasion two friends had home invasion. I had my home for sale for two years prior and I was willing to walk away and lose my money so I could get out of Costa Rica. I was lucky and someone bought it cheap. I will never step foot and that country again. You are correct in everything you said, but I will not return to the US. I live in another central American country now same problems but now I stay low to the ground almost unnoticeable, but I find it better than living in the United States.

Getting robbed many times and beat up and arrested for that is better than living in the US??? Was the beating a lot of head blows? In live in Phoenix and all summer I keep my 3 exterior doors and windows open. No security doors. A person could walk right in. Risky for sure, but no problem in 14 years. The US is a large country. There are bad places. Plenty of horrible places in Phoenix. I just don't choose to live there.

I was interested in full time travel but quickly saw Tubers dropping out after 3 years. 13 years is a good run. Some Tubers seem forced to try to keep traveling to keep YT money coming in.
I've had a similar issue. I like moving every 7 years or so. Lived in NY, FL, Germany, TX, AK, CA, AZ. Was looking for a new area in the US for my next move and found "I've already experienced that. So now planning a move to SE Asia, find a good woman and have kids. A new experience for me.
I retired 22 years ago at 45, funded mostly by slow flipping my house. A fun hobby for me. I do all the work myself. Working on house #4 now. Because slow I get use almost all salvaged material. Right now making kitchen cabinets out of furniture people toss out. 3/4" high grade plywood oak veneer on both side is better material than most "high quality" cabinets have. Make my own exterior doors too by cutting up free tossed doors which included solid mahogany and oak.

There are a lot of people who eventually return to their home countries for various reasons. As for us we returned to Surrey BC for an extended stay through what should be the warmer months to visit family and friends as well as the fact that my father at 100 years old wasn't going to last long. Right now we're 3 months in and with 3 months to go before our flight back to the Philippines and I'm counting down the weeks and days till we can return to our condo back there. Canada is awful right now with extreme costs of living, woke culture, poor health care and high crime with so many homeless and drug addicts all over the place. Canada has been flushed down the toilet, while the Philippines is on it's way up, .... at least in the more developed areas. Of course owning our condo in our Philippine city is a huge plus as there is always some improvement we can make, and it really does make where we chose to retire feel like home.

Life here will be boring after awhile when friends and family aren't around. Making "friends" when you're older isn't easy. Kinda like high school cliques over again. Acquaintances are easy to come by but people have their "tribes" after retirement.
After you see the famous sites it seems to boil down to eating, shopping and exercising, maybe. And if you don't have money it's not as "cheap" as people claim. It's all relative.
I had a job where I would only stay for 24 hours or so and I learned to pack in a lot during that time so eventually when I went somewhere for longer I was disinterested.
Mexico has great food but it's basically same tortilla, different meat...unless you like tongue and intestines and crickets.
You are a couple, you can entertain eachother. An elderly, single person of modest means...well...
Enjoy your life here although it ain't what it used to be....

I`m banned now from traveling to the US for 10 years and I wouldn`t care if it would be life long, asking for asylum bc. of political persecution at the airport made me to a heavy criminal in their eyes in just a few seconds, and I experienced hell on earth media is silent about. I met people in the food deprivating Stewart detention center who waited already 14 months in detention on fulfilling of their asylum process. I just wanted out there, but they refused my wish to travel back with my return ticket, a breaking of law USCS $ 1225, they forced me to wait in detention over five weeks to tell the immigration judge my wish to withdraw my asylum application and be deported.
A bed neighbour there with mexican background grew up in the US, lived there over 20 years, had a job and a child with US-citizenship, very intelligent, not a criminal, just because he had 0.8 promille alcohol at driving they took away his legal residency and threw him into this detention as well. I all the time thought whether I landed in North Korea, my last day was in Graham, a black woman cried like a baby, and I understood her feelings. This hate against people is not that of a democracy, I just wanted to be far away from this country, all Latin people in the detention told me that in their countries they don`t throw people so easily into detention and deprive them of their life.

Buying a house does not adjust tax to the price paid. New owner pays the same as the old owner did. Every property is assessed the same way based on size and location. Finishes don't matter. Where a person chooses to live matters. I lived and worked in San Jose CA, went through a couple earthquakes. Fine place to live but prop tax was high and earthquakes made insurance high. Moved to Phoenix when retired, 2 birds, 1 stone. Hail is about the only risk here and that easy to deal with.

Tubers are in the business of making money. When they have a travel channel they have to tell viewers what they want to hear. That's just reality. Tubers will of course give a bunch of altruistic reasons...but viewers demand that too.
There are a few expat Tubers who for years said Ecuador was great, told people to buy property, then pretty quietly decided to try another country for "a change". Now telling anyone willing to listen how great their new place is and everyone should buy property there.
There are also many Tubers who have never even been in the country they push. They just use video clips they find online or buy. Easy, lots of viewers.
