As much as Bethesda has a habit of having actors voice 500+ characters in any game, I'm soooo glad they gave Codsworth to Stephen Russell he's the best
At least it's lore friendly to have robots sharing a voice. All the old men, old women and ghouls in Fallout 3 that sounded suspiciously similar, not so much
He's a legend. I pulled my characters names out of the list of names he could say - just to get the satisfaction of Codsworth acknowledging Sole Survivor's name
And name your character something silly that he will actually pronounce lol. I named my character Boobies and it was hilarious every time he said my name
Nah... I turn him into death incarnate... Albeit death incarnate with impeccable manners and a delightful accent. Only thing I hate is I can't upload him as a copy onto all of my robots. He would be legion...
"If only the missus could see you now." Holy shit no other character can rip you apart like that. No one else knows who you are so no one can see what a failure youve become when you do an evil playthrough.
I just tried to do an evil play through... Failed... Again! I think the only way I can is if I just run past Sanctuary and never return, just go straight for the Drive-in...
In a strange way that is very symbolic of a good person changed for the worse after an event in their lives. Forget your past or should i say... Run from it and bury your feelings and later morality in cheap yet effective poisons both mental and physical i.e doing drugs and alcohol and then finding a new distraction in the wasteland... Murder.
As Nate: I kept the ring until I get into a relationship with Curie and (unaware) synth Shawn. I couldn't finish railroad with him because father was killed on sight. Then I gave Curie the ring, like letting Hawke to just have a new life, a new beginning, a new family in Sanctuary, as the general of the minutemen.
Codsworth is the only companion that i actively miss if i haven't taken him out for awhile. He's a tangible bridge to the prewar world and your prewar life, before the world was ruined, and your family was intact.
In my opinion, F:4 suffered by only letting you have one companion. We could have had so many more amazing interactions between them, and I wouldn't feel quite so guilty about barely using some of them.
@@hanzzel6086 agreed. I got a mod that lets me have as many companions as I wanted. Was so much better. I stormed the Institute with Preston, MacCready, Piper, Valentine, Hancock, Deacon and Cait
@@hanzzel6086it was never meant to be coded like that originally. Dogmeat is suppose to be an additional companion. Unfortunately it was scrapped for some reason. I just mod it so I can have both. One of their best moves was allowing console modding 😂
@@solouno2280 thank you. I didn't know Charles Dickens wrote something called that (I don't even know who Charles Dickens is really) Thank you, it makes sense and is funny now
I actually find it cool that Codsworth holds his family in high regards. But now the thing that strikes me intrigued is that if you dont go to Sanctuary at all and talk with Codsworth until the end of the game you can have unique dialogue with him about the whereabouts of Shaun and Nora and actually give him the knowledge he missed out on after staying in Sanctuary for the whole time
But, Codsworth 'll never give you that tape, your wife once made for you just before world war 3 started. Sometimes Codsworth speaks about the tape. But, never give it to you. Or do you still get option somewhere in Fallout 4, to get that tape? If so,.. I need to know how, how to get that option in the Fallout 4 game :)
I left him in Sanctuary at first because he was only friend and I was so scared he’d die if I brought him with me :’( Then I found out that companions don’t die unless you kill them
I only used him in my very first trip to Concord because I accidentally hit and killed him during the battle with the Deathclaw (it had aggroed on him, leaving him with very little health), but at the I didn't realize it was me. So after that (and reloading a save), I wouldn't travel with a companion for several years until I stumbled upon the same info you did. Then I was too busy with all the other companions (mostly Curie, god I love French accents) to use him much. And now I feel bad about it : (.
@elixer4583 who specifically? Also they ain't your companion if you haven't met them lol even like 90% of them are labelled as essential before you talk to them or are in a spot where it's physically impossible to accidentally kill them without knowing dam fucking well what you're doing actually scratch that, I just looked at the list of them again 100% of them fall into those two categories even with my set of mods that change the tags to make companions Killable before you meet them the only ones you can accidentally kill are cait and aida. Also as a side note I was reassuring that person that you couldn't kill the companions you've befriended, because you know they were talking about leaving a companion behind because they didn't want others to kill them and then said their current understanding was only they could kill them also codsworth the specific companion they were talking about is marked essential because he gives you the diamond city quest.
Codsworth-"I'm truly glad to be part of your family and love you all" Curie-"I need a synthetic human body to experience emotions like love and even grief"
thats actually interesting especially since Curie was created to actually have a human personality by the scientist in her area. perhaps spending time underground alone without any interaction with the new world made her develop slower perhaps she just thinks she needs a synth body, but doesnt actually perhaps a synth body makes it even easier for them to finally develop their personality i can only imagine how compasionate a synth codswhorth would be if that is actually the case
@@agustinsmania5270 Codsworth was using a personality emulator, as well. She might not have had that, and he might not have really been experiencing so much as emulating...
that's not why she wanted a human body and you know it, it was so that she could feel the spark of creativity and inventiveness that humans possess, to be able to observe things and come up with ideas regarding them; before, she had only been able to analyse and compile data, run tests, and prepare results, all the kinds of things a machine would do, but with a human body and the intelect that comes with it, she was able to properly study disease and sickness and the way it causes suffering and then come up with a new and improved form of medicine, not something a machine could do
My theory is that complex robots, like Mister Handies and Assaultrons, eventually develop personalities if their combat inhibitors are never broken yet they're still not properly maintained. That's how we get robots like KLEO and Codsworth, who are clearly sapient but don't need synthetic bodies. As Curie was properly maintained throughout most of her existence, her only form of sentience was her personality subroutine.
To be honest college was for my favorite robot in the fallout universe cuz he actually gives a s*** about people and he unlike most people in this world have a moral compass that isn't spinning every which direction
I think if someone is willing to accept the 'personhood' of Codsworth, they would likely be at least sympathetic to the personhood of all Synths. Honestly, how the player is introduced to the question of "are Synths people" is really interesting. Codsworth is one of the first characters the player really meets, and he's the most "human" Robot we ever meet - he's not malfunctioning or really insanely operating on faulty old orders, and he's even got a moral compass. Could that make him a person? Later on we meet Nick, who's basically a Gen 2 synth with a person's personality programmed into him. He's also his own man too. Is he not a person? Plus there's Curie, the Robot who requests to be put in a Synth body. Not to mention the big reveal with Danse, with how he's a human who we later learn is an unknowing synth. Is his personhood any less, for this twist? I think it's all very interesting, and personally I can't see how anyone could walk away from the game without at least some sympathy for the Synths. 🤔 🤓 🤖
@@ericremotesteam i personally think to answer the question of "are snyths people" is to answer another question "are synths sentient?" and some synths do display signs of sentience. cogsworth (while not a snyth himself) has enough to be declared sentient i feel like. he is self aware and aware of others actions. he has a conciousness (he understands what is right and wrong and encourages the player to make right decisions) and some level of intelligence (knowing what is around him, understanding civilization died and reborn, among others) while one could argue hes reacting off of programming, i don't think so, cogsworth, for all thats worth (no pun intended), is wanting to reproduce and his friend to reproduce as well, to start a family. he was only programed to service a family in the most human way possible, not express the need for a family and for the mc to find their family. i think there is a star trek TNG episode that puts robotic/android rights on trial in a beautiful way named "the measure of a man". as for the answer of "are synths sentient", some have achieved sentience. X6-88 is one of the few synths that has achieved sentience in fallout lore. if they are sentient, they should be considered people. if they are not sentient, they should be considered robots. simple as that. however im more surprised fallout 4 devs did not put snyth rights on trial to answer that question, there is a civilization post nuclear war, even minor, im more surprised they didn't make that a mission, with the requirement to build a huge courthouse. it would make for some interesting decisions. you could recognize X6-88s sentience and secure rights of sentient synths or revoke the rights on behalf of the institute, and X6-88 is captured and reprogramed.
@@DiogenesDworkinsonyou don't *actually* have to complete Preston's mission to recruit Codsworth, but I wholeheartedly agree, it's very frustrating to have to go back and forth all the way to Concord to get Codsworth to travel with you. Especially since I think Codsworth does have some dialogue for that mission, about the Deathclaw, but I could be wrong about that. 🤔
First play through of fallout 4 I did not know I could have cogsworth as a companion and after knowing that I could of had him as a companion I always take him with me
Cosworth is, and will always be, best boy. He faithfully waited over 210 years for us, he sees the best in us, he's always there for us, and he brings out our best self. I never make it to an evil play through largely because I just love him too much to break his heart. Truly, the best friend a man could have, and the pride of General Atomics...
In most of my playthroughs I've left Codsworth in Sanctuary, but he wasn't alone, I made sure that he was helping out Preston garvey's group who settled there, and I even made sure he was assigned to tasks, spending his time helping and serving others sounds like something he would want. However now that I understand more about his character. I'm going to try to bond with him in my next playthrough of Fallout 4.
Indeed it’s part of why I wish we could restore his chrome or upgrade him to have Mr gutsy armor. He kept his mind strong over 200, he deserves the to have a build that reflects that.
In Star Wars, droids could develop emotions and a personality over decades. Which more often than not led to independent thinking and droid rebellions. Hence why they were given memory wipes. Codsworth had 200yrs to rewatch his memories of his family and interactions with randos in the commonwealth to develop emotions.
I love how Codsworth shirks most of he common robot tropes in media, being, ironically, more warm and human than some of the humans in the postbellum world.
Codsworth is by far my favorite companion because of all the things he says in combat. There's nothing better than watching a group of Raiders get squad wiped by a British floating Roomba.
It’s possible he DID go a little crazy, in the sense of being stuck in a pre-war loop… it’s just that the issue solved itself when we finally DID come back, and that prior to this, he had the luxury of _knowing_ his owners escaped to a vault, and that the odds of some part of your family returning, no matter how many generations removed, were near 100% Some other things that come to mind: -Sanctuary doesn’t show many signs of direct damage from the nuclear war: in fact, many of the trees from before the war are _still standing,_ albeit having shed their leave. If they haven’t collapsed and rotted in that time, then it’s not unreasonable to assume they’re still alive and just shed their leaves for the winter (you leave the vault in late October). As such, Codsworth didn’t have to worry about his circuitry getting fried by the EMP effect of Nuclear Weaponry -rather than patrolling the inside of a building, he patrols an entire suburban neighborhood. This makes it far more obvious that the world has suffered serious damages than if he were confined to a building interior
Personally I don't buy that he is sentient, all his behaviours can be explained with 3 parameters in place, an empathy routine in his nanny bot coding for the purpose of caring for older children a call the cops routine for witnessing serious crimes committed by their owner or other people like a burglar and most importantly a limited routine for adapting to his environment to better serve his owners. All the computers that canonicaly go sentient have one of two things a human brain or a room sized super computer and in case you didn't know yes synths have full blown human brains and a component inside of it you can't detect with current technology without killing the synth to dig it out everything else is just a regular ass human the reason corsairs are more dangerous than your avrage joe is because they have fallout nv type cybernetic enhancements like kelog did, I don't blame anyone for not knowing this shit it's all terminal lore 99% of players skip that shit lol.
I always like to bring Codsworth with me to the 'big set pieces' in the main story. Reunions and the Nuclear Option primarily. Even if he's not _completely_ sentient, I do think he has enough awareness that I think he deserves to see things through to the end. He's also just friend-shaped, which makes him an appealing character to have around. It's funny how borderline bloodthirsty he is when in the heat of the moment; he's outright disappointed if enemies run away before he can end them.
Honestly, I'm pretty much addicted to this character, do every run with him... Had a save where he went down, I didn't have repair kits and he couldn't get up without them... Game over.
I brought him with me to destroy the Institute and I left the scientists alive because they were all cowering not fighting but Codsworth absolutely slaughtered them lmao he has no mercy for eugenicists
Codsworth reminds me of that Robin Williams movie the “Bicentennial Man”. The loyalty, the love(well minus the romance story), and of course the message of family. Codsworth makes me think of that line from the movie: “One is glad to be of service”. Awesome video Ox
I think General Atomics used their military chassis to have "domestic" line of robots. So in the background of Codsworth's nanny/butler programming is still Mister Gutsy subroutines with combat movements.
FO76 kind of disproved this, with its loading screens. "Realizing their robots' enormous military potential, General Atomics International developed the Mr. Gutsy as a powerful war-time equivalent to the Mr. Handy." Another loading screen tip also verifies that Mr. Handy preceded the Miss Nanny. All things considered though, that means that like in the many other ways Codsworth has unnaturally developed; he must have developed his own improved combat subroutines, or possibly Nate had them installed/made... Nate was a soldier, the missus was a Lawyer; mayhaps they wanted to be sure Codsworth could protect Shaun. I'll stick with the former theory, though -- Codsworth was practically two glitches shy of being self-aware anyways, and you don't get to stay around your place of residence for 200 years, let alone in ONE PIECE... without becoming capable of holding your own against the odd Radroach, Feral Ghoul, Raider or ruthless Scavenger.
Maybe they programmed in some sort of home defense routine? And that served as inspiration for the Mr. Gutsy? Or they just took some code from the Mr. Gutsies and plopped it into a newer model of Mr. Handy for benign improvements or something and didn't bother to take out the combat subroutines because Fallout.
I don’t believe people who say they don’t find Codsworth interesting. He’s principled, he’s brave and he’s got a biting wit. He’s one of my favoruite characters from Fallout 4, and with good reason
Oh my gosh! FINALLY!!! I have been BEGGING Ox to do a Codsworth character video for YEARS and it's finally here! I'm so happy! Thank you, Ox! I love your lore videos and character deep dives so much, and I'm overjoyed that Codsworth finally gets the treatment.
I feel so horrible now, I've never used him as an active Companion and I've clocked thousands of hours in the game. I'm in literal tears from watching this. I don't think I want to spoil anymore of this, I'll save those moments for the day I'll be able to game again. The first thing I'm doing is a 100% play through with this absolute Goat.
I tended to take Codsworth with me in situations that I felt was too dangerous for Dogmeat (I'm a Dog Lover, so I hate seeing him hurt.) Codsworth also keeps your morality in check, liking it when you help other people.
Codsworth and Nick Valentine I feel are two of the best companions throughout FO4. It is weird really that mechanical "people" feel and act more human than, well the other humans lol
I adored Codsworth from the very moment I met him. He serves in his role excellently in the story, reminding the survivor of who they were, and helping shape who they are.
Ironic indeed. Their goal with the Mr Handy (and Miss Nanny) models was to make money. A big part of the marketing and programming was an appeal to old style british manners and american ideals, making the personality an idealized version of a person. Which is not uncommon in SciFi when it come to robots. Humans tend to project either the best of humanity, or the worst, onto their metal children.
Codsworth is my favorite.character. In fallout 4. I think the values he represents are good. They may be more difficult to maintain but I think they are infinitely worthwhile. Stephen Russell did an excellent job voicing him as well.
Lot of people think Nate may have committed war crimes like rest of the USSA forces had a penchant to do. I think Nate embodied the good traditional things about the country like honor and strong family ties that existed before the timeline split. This can be seen with how Codsworth acts beyond his original programming. Sometimes Codsworth has to remind Nate of the type of person he is.
In a way Codsworth kind of reminds me of Ducky from NCIS. He likes to try to hold people to a higher standard even though they don't believe in themself. But if pushed to the limit they will not mix words with you. Traveling with Codsworth he makes you want to be a better character.
Codsworth is Nate's Momento Mori - Nate's reminder of his humanity and his reminder of himself. He's one of the best written characters in how well he holds to this classic trope.
I Know it's been 3 Months but I have to get this off my chest: I wish You could've had the choice to make him into a synth like Curie. He deserves that more than Curie in my opinion, He deserves to be more than some robot butler, but a Alfred figure to you. He is a underrated companion fr
See, I disagree that he should have that option, in vanilla at least. Having him stay a robot lends more to the idea of him becoming more "human" through observation and time, as opposed to taking a form _meant_ to be "human."
Disagree heavily 1. Codsworth is a robot butler, that’s his whole idea. Moreover, this is the idea behind his whole line of robots. As such, there is always a fine line between serving you in accordance to programming and serving you out of genuine respect. Making him a synth adds nothing but ruins that aspect of his. 2. Its kind of weird to make Codsworth a synth when he is basically the only person you know from your former life. Not only are you risking losing him to some random mistake, but even if it succeeds, what does it give you? Its not something him or you really want. 3. Making both him and Curie synths is repetitive. So, between the two, its clearly Curie who rightfully has that plot point. Curie’s whole shtick is experiencing something new, she is literally exploring the post-war world for the first time. And being a synth, having new human-like emotions and thought process fits right in with her other story. Meanwhile, Codsworth gains nothing from being a synth.
I love the character profiles you do Oxhorn, much lore and details, I hope you finish the profiles for the remaining companions like Dogmeat, Old Longfellow and even Ada
@@kingjamization no he didn't, he did a video of how to max affinity with him but he didn't do a character profile on him and even Dogmeat has a backstory and history to talk about, Ada too cos she's got history, personality and a story of her own
@@Kappi__, on the contrary, I think it would be the longest video of all. If you think about it, you realize that he is unique, probably the most interesting character in the entire Fallout franchise.
I'm reminded of a saying. " even the devil himself runs when a good man goes to war" i always do my best to max out ol codsworth then send him back to guard the house. Especially when I'm going to do something he wouldn't like. Sometimes, just like in real life, the only real kindness just isn't kind at all.
Fascinating to hear lines that I've never heard before in this game after putting thousands upon thousands of hours into it. I could never bear to disappoint codsworth.
What irks me is that while Curie can be 'upgraded' to synth body, you can't do anything at all for Codsworth without a DLC or mod. Codsworth is Jiminy Cricket with a metal shell, buzzsaws, and a flamethrower.
While, in my head cannon, I'd like to offer him the option, I feel like Codsworth is proud of his General Atomics origins (given his interactions with other robots, like Takahashi), and wouldn't want to be human.
Ill admit. I never thought much about Codsworth in my first few playthroughs, but I did just start a new playthrough, doing a Minutemen run, and decided to take Codsworth along. Watching this, I now think I really have been missing out on a cool companion
Thank God you didn't put Codsworth's death line in or I would've bawled like crazy. I heard it once and it was too heartbreaking. I'm thanking heaven and earth for the fact that that voiced line was cut from the game (although unfortunately it is still in the game files... Traumatizing is what it is)
Oxhorn, you are the best storyteller ever. I just became a fallout fan, and honestly you help make the story even more compelling. Thank you for such great content and please keep doing more!
It's not for everyone but you should see his original videos from 16 years ago. They're more comedic in nature very different from this. Also New Vegas is where it's at.🤘
It's interesting that other Mr. Handy-style robots are the same age as Codsworth but haven't developed a personality like he has. They have the same base hardware and software. The only similar robot that I can think of that has similar personality is Curie but Curie's software was modified.
Codworth for my first playthrough was my partner. I've always played games like fallout as who I am, nice but tactical. Codworth was such a joy that i could never part with him, literally from the start to the very end of the game we were togheter. And i think betheda did a good job at adding him as the solely good character, but still making him interesting.
Thank you for still making content Oxhorn. I go back to the vaults explained frequently. Your videos are always so good and have high quality, reflecting your effort
The thing about passing the charisma checks multiple times for Codsworth vs. X6-88 once is likely due to bases of comparison in terms of time. Codsworth is the only companion (aside from Nick) who shares the commonality of remembering pre-war life, even if only for a month or two. This sets his morals high (like Nick) and even higher expectations for you since he knew you and your family from before. X6 might be rigorous in his thinking due to his own programming but is willing to allow some questionable things to people if it furthers the Institute’s objectives. He doesn't know you or think in the way a pre-war person might vs. people constantly surviving in the wasteland. That’s one thing the interview with Piper made me reflect upon. The drastic differences in mentality over that time period and how much of the decision making is largely survival based, even in groups, rather than more socially or even morally centered. But part of the draw to Fallout is the contrast.
Codworth's case is actually very similar to WALL-E's. In WALL-E's case his rather basic programming evolved over 700 years to become a curious, kind, helpful, arguably sentient personality that could understand love, because that was all he was knew thanks to "Hello, Dolly!" Codsworth, having much more advanced programming and personality, took only 200 years to achieve what is pretty much sentience due to his pre-war memories of the Sole Survivor's love and care for their memory, molding his morals and standards into that. Now we have at least two confirmed cases (fictional yes, but still believeable) that a robot, if left alone for long enough with appropriate material, can indeed develop some kind of sentience.
@@greyshadow9498 that’s probably what happens with me. I enjoy codsworth till I meet Nick. Now codsworth isn’t a terrible companion but Nick suits me better
Lore-wise, I believe Codsworth is nearly as sentient as Curie. But I do not believe he would want a synth body, because he likes being useful in his way--as a loyal and loved retainer.
I never knew of these dialoguse, I just went around killing everything and trying out each faction, probably almost 200 games and still didnt know about these
Ppl might not agree with my opinion but Codsworth is one of my fav companions. He’s a naive robot with morals and really grows into his own self beyond his programming. (With the dlc- I make him into a protectron)
I never really gave Codsworth much thought. The beginning of this video made me tear up and I had to go and get hugs from my wife. Gonna do a Codsworth playthrough now.
i always wished that codsworth had more to say about the 200 years he spent alone, trying to protect the neighborhood and the experiences in the commonwealth in that time, he must’ve seen so much!
Fallout 4 was my very first Fallout experience, so Codsworth was my very first Mr. Handy robot I ever encountered. I have such a soft spot for those robots because of him.
My Survivor lives at the Red Rocket Truck Stop. There are only 4 other people at that settlement. A provisioner, whose only job is to walk back and forth to Abernathy, and then whenever they aren't traveling with me, Dogmeat, the goodest of boys, Piper, my wife, and Codsworth. That's my family. Until post game when I add a certain spoiler. Not only a fantastic character, wonderfully voice acted, but it's the names. The fact that he calls me "Mister Paul" pleases me to no end 😁
Codsworth is one of my favorite companions in the game, along with Piper, Nick, Curie & Preston, and along with Preston & Piper one of the 3 companions I have permanently assigned to the Castle (my main base of operations, and I try to rotate between those three as my active companion from time to time). Also, I made sure to massively upgrade Codsworth once I got my first Robot Workbench up & running: He now has Assaultron legs, Robobrain torso, Sentry Bot arms (with dual gatling lasers) and an Assaultron Laser head, all of which have the voltaic frame armor (with tesla coils in the torso), and he completely wrecked an entire squad of synths during the Institute's attack on the Castle during my latest play through with his eye laser. And I can think of no one better to help look after synth Shaun whenever I'm away on missions to help the various settlements of the Commonwealth.
He’s a beast early game, although not being able to wear armor or equip new weapons without the Automation DLC means he loses some combat utility later on
Thing is, Codsworth did evolve past his default programming to the point he became self-aware of his existence. 200 years can cause serious strain on ones mental state.
codsworth is and will always be the best companion he is the 2nd one you can get and he is actually one of the strongest believe it or not i love his corny little jokes and his how his eyes widen when your nice to him he shows so much emotion even being just a robot i personally don't like to mod codsworth because i feel it takes away some of the emotion but i feel either way his voice his gameplay his emotion its all just top notch
Codsworth is the first thing we see when we start the game, he's in the kitchen making us coffee. And when we return he's still trying too clean up the house. I love beating the automatron DLC and making Codsworth into a OP robot follower
I'd ship that couple... I hate turning her into a synth. As to water, I always play as a water baron, don't even spend caps. See a need, provide a solution...
In the end, he does have his family, albeit not his original family. Instead he has you and all your companions, most of which treat Codsworth with respect. Of the vanilla companions, Codsworth is really the best at displaying emotions and making you feel for him...which is ironic since he is a robot. The other vanilla companions have their moments, but Codsworth is consistent. All that being said, my favorite companion is Ellen the Cartographer.
Honestly I dropped Codsworth off in sanctuary after returning the deathclaw egg from salem. He likes it, but next to the nest is technically your reward innthe form of a deathclaw gauntlet. But also the remains of some settlers their brahmin and a raider. In that moment, I felt like, even though I was righting the wrongs of the gunners, I was also aiding what was almost definitely an actual monster that eats people. And I feel Codsworth is also aware of that.
why do i want to start another playthrough with Codsworth now? Everytime i watch one of your companion video i want to start again based on that companion.
The robots and synth characters are honestly so interesting to me they all play off each other So well. I just wish that they had more of an actual Arc to them beyond how they feel about the sole survivor. Codsworth's personality is so intentional at the start but it feels like they expected the player to drop him as a companion by the end and so theresvery little to explore later with him. He is the least aggregious though as unlike danse and x6 he holds strong to his values and doesn't change too much. I'd kill for codsworth to chat with x6 and danse as they grapple with what it means to be a synth and their own person . I feel like codsworth would have good insights for them since he is comfortable being a bought robot designed as a tool who is also his own being
Great episode as always. Ox never disappoints. I embrace Codsworth and make sure he is good. Usually until I get his perk and then use another companion. However if I don't need to get other companions perks I scramble between Codsworth, Curie, and Cait.
Whenever I was lost or unsure of who and what I should pursue I'd look to Cods, because even if I didn't get it? I know he knows best. Just listen to the oldest, most personal friend you have in this horrific waste.
I love how if you put in generic names he will actually call you by that name. like the first time ever hearing him call my character by his name was him calling my character Joshua(the name i chose) its such a nice detail
i couldnt leave codsworth behind, i got the multiple companions mod just so i could bring him along everywhere despite already having heard every single word he had to say
I could never take him with me. I loved him. I never wanted to put him in danger. I tried to make the settlement comfortable, and safe. I know he was worried... But I... I couldn't lose another. Knowing that my friendly robot... Would be safe.
For me i use AFT on Survival mode because the tiny strike squad gives a real immersive feeling when clearing large compounds. Piper is the romance and my favorite follower as she matches the MM playthrough so well. Then theres Cait and McCreedy as both are the embodiment of loyalty once you show worthy. Lastly theres Codsworth and Dogmeat as the links to your past.
I think one of the few characters I've gone out of my way to treat as best as I could in every single run in F4 was codsworth, i can't bring myself to harm or hate him, he IS and forever will be part of my Sole Suvirvor's family.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of the folks at the Institute have become detached from the outside world and see things purely from a scientific perspective. There are some like Alan Binet and Madison Li who show compassion, and Binet in particular believes synths are indeed people, but these two are in the minority. That’s the biggest flaw of the Institute in my view. It’s not their brilliance that makes them dangerous for the people of the wasteland, it’s their lack of empathy and compassion. Science is a very important field of study, and the technological advances the Institute has achieved could all be applied for great benefit in rebuilding the world of Fallout, but humanity cannot be saved by individuals who display a profound lack of it themselves.
The same way they can build such awful weapons despite all their fancy technology: a refusal to go out and see things with their own two eyes, lying to themselves with statistics so that the weakness of the flesh can’t betray the truth
Fun Fact: If you bring Codsworth along to the confrontation with Kellogg, and you choose to fight him, Codsworth will target Kellogg first and won't target other enemies until Kellogg is dead.
As much as Bethesda has a habit of having actors voice 500+ characters in any game, I'm soooo glad they gave Codsworth to Stephen Russell he's the best
At least it's lore friendly to have robots sharing a voice. All the old men, old women and ghouls in Fallout 3 that sounded suspiciously similar, not so much

thats actually interesting
especially since Curie was created to actually have a human personality by the scientist in her area.
perhaps spending time underground alone without any interaction with the new world made her develop slower
perhaps she just thinks she needs a synth body, but doesnt actually
perhaps a synth body makes it even easier for them to finally develop their personality
i can only imagine how compasionate a synth codswhorth would be if that is actually the case
I genuinely appreciate and like Codsworth. In many ways he embodies some of my theories about synthetic intelligence.
To be honest college was for my favorite robot in the fallout universe cuz he actually gives a s*** about people and he unlike most people in this world have a moral compass that isn't spinning every which direction
then i gotta ask, what is your theories on synthetic intelligence? genuinely curious on it.
@@Zeakthecat I agree
@@ericremotesteam i personally think to answer the question of "are snyths people" is to answer another question "are synths sentient?"
and some synths do display signs of sentience. cogsworth (while not a snyth himself) has enough to be declared sentient i feel like. he is self aware and aware of others actions. he has a conciousness (he understands what is right and wrong and encourages the player to make right decisions) and some level of intelligence (knowing what is around him, understanding civilization died and reborn, among others)
while one could argue hes reacting off of programming, i don't think so, cogsworth, for all thats worth (no pun intended), is wanting to reproduce and his friend to reproduce as well, to start a family.
he was only programed to service a family in the most human way possible, not express the need for a family and for the mc to find their family.
i think there is a star trek TNG episode that puts robotic/android rights on trial in a beautiful way named "the measure of a man".
as for the answer of "are synths sentient", some have achieved sentience.

Codsworth is by far my favorite companion because of all the things he says in combat. There's nothing better than watching a group of Raiders get squad wiped by a British floating Roomba.
It’s interesting how he’s one of the few sentient robots that broke free of their ignorance of the apocalypse without going crazy
It’s possible he DID go a little crazy, in the sense of being stuck in a pre-war loop… it’s just that the issue solved itself when we finally DID come back, and that prior to this, he had the luxury of _knowing_ his owners escaped to a vault, and that the odds of some part of your family returning, no matter how many generations removed, were near 100%
Some other things that come to mind:
-Sanctuary doesn’t show many signs of direct damage from the nuclear war: in fact, many of the trees from before the war are _still standing,_ albeit having shed their leave. If they haven’t collapsed and rotted in that time, then it’s not unreasonable to assume they’re still alive and just shed their leaves for the winter (you leave the vault in late October). As such, Codsworth didn’t have to worry about his circuitry getting fried by the EMP effect of Nuclear Weaponry
-rather than patrolling the inside of a building, he patrols an entire suburban neighborhood.

No wonder he's such a beast, Codsworth slaps during combat
Huh. So Codsworth is like Alfred Pennyworth. Butler now, but deep in there is still the steel of a soldier.
@RJALEXANDER777 yes 100% agree!
FO76 kind of disproved this, with its loading screens. "Realizing their robots' enormous military potential, General Atomics International developed the Mr. Gutsy as a powerful war-time equivalent to the Mr. Handy."
Another loading screen tip also verifies that Mr.

Got to remember, not everybody that works for a soulless, greedy corporation is "evil." Many are just doing a job of trying to eek out a living.
There are mods that allow you to do it, but sadly it isn't the same where he truly is aware of his new synth body like Curie.
See, I disagree that he should have that option, in vanilla at least. Having him stay a robot lends more to the idea of him becoming more "human" through observation and time, as opposed to taking a form _meant_ to be "human."
Disagree heavily

Yo, would get one.
In WALL-E's case his rather basic programming evolved over 700 years to become a curious, kind, helpful, arguably sentient personality that could understand love, because that was all he was knew thanks to "Hello, Dolly!"
Codsworth, having much more advanced programming and personality, took only 200 years to achieve what is pretty much sentience due to his pre-war memories of the Sole Survivor's love and care for their memory, molding his morals and standards into that.
Now we have at least two confirmed cases (fictional yes, but still believeable) that a robot, if left alone for long enough with appropriate material, can indeed develop some kind of sentience.
I wish I ran with codsworth more but my heart goes to Nick Valentine. I like codsworth but he’s maybe not the best best companion for me personally.
Sacrilege!
I usually run with Nick as well, he just fits my personality better.
@@greyshadow9498 that’s probably what happens with me. I enjoy codsworth till I meet Nick. Now codsworth isn’t a terrible companion but Nick suits me better
@@adrianparker5633get the automatron dlc and turn codsworth into a god of war
You sir have failed everyone
Codsworth may be a video game character but he has a sort of little special place in my mind
Sometimes he makes me cry such a good spirit for a robot
Lore-wise, I believe Codsworth is nearly as sentient as Curie. But I do not believe he would want a synth body, because he likes being useful in his way--as a loyal and loved retainer.
I never knew of these dialoguse, I just went around killing everything and trying out each faction, probably almost 200 games and still didnt know about these
Ppl might not agree with my opinion but Codsworth is one of my fav companions. He’s a naive robot with morals and really grows into his own self beyond his programming.
(With the dlc- I make him into a protectron)
Despite most Mr.Handy's having the same voice you can always tell its Codsworth
Steven Russell is a legend!
Dude, Codsworth makes me cry every time.
You don’t understand how much these videos and channel mean to me man hope these never stop and wish you the best!
Codsworth is definitely one of the better characters in Fo4
🎶 i love those dear hearts and gentle people.... 🎶
We all need a Codsworth in our lives
people always say that other companions are easy to get the companion perk but codsworth literally morphs himself around you.
I never took codsworth for a companion yet, but now I may have to, he's way deeper than I thought. As always a wonderful video from you.
He’s a beast early game, although not being able to wear armor or equip new weapons without the Automation DLC means he loses some combat utility later on
You have commited sins against hummanity
Thing is, Codsworth did evolve past his default programming to the point he became self-aware of his existence. 200 years can cause serious strain on ones mental state.
Holy Crap!!! I've waited about 7 YEARS for this.... Imma finally gonna watch me a bio on ol' Codsworth😁
Kind of disappointed though. . .CAUSE NO BOWLER HAT FOR CODSWORTH! Ox, what were you thinking!?
"A bit over 210 years, to be precise..."
codsworth is and will always be the best companion he is the 2nd one you can get and he is actually one of the strongest believe it or not i love his corny little jokes and his how his eyes widen when your nice to him he shows so much emotion even being just a robot i personally don't like to mod codsworth because i feel it takes away some of the emotion but i feel either way his voice his gameplay his emotion its all just top notch
0:30 You do neither my friend
Codsworth is the first thing we see when we start the game, he's in the kitchen making us coffee.
And when we return he's still trying too clean up the house. I love beating the automatron DLC and making Codsworth into a OP robot follower
Codworth comes in clutch with purified water in survival. I lowkey thought curie and codworth would make great friends with each other.
Codsworth is a godsend on survival mode cause you dont gotta stimpac him 🙏❤️
I remember LOOOOSING it when i seen codsworth after the vault.. genuinely teared up haha
He's waiting for you...
“AND THE CAR… THE CAR!! HOW DO YOU POLISH RUST?!” Codsworth’s best line 😂
I would love to have a robot friend like codsworth
Same, definetly.
Codsworth and Curie are my favorite companions, both are so loyal and kind.
i couldnt leave codsworth behind, i got the multiple companions mod just so i could bring him along everywhere despite already having heard every single word he had to say
I could never take him with me. I loved him. I never wanted to put him in danger. I tried to make the settlement comfortable, and safe. I know he was worried... But I... I couldn't lose another. Knowing that my friendly robot... Would be safe.
a video i have been waiting for since 2018 at least, thanks for everything ox
For me i use AFT on Survival mode because the tiny strike squad gives a real immersive feeling when clearing large compounds.
Piper is the romance and my favorite follower as she matches the MM playthrough so well.
Then theres Cait and McCreedy as both are the embodiment of loyalty once you show worthy.
Lastly theres Codsworth and Dogmeat as the links to your past.
Hey Oxhorn! I ordered the shirt "who's a good boy?" An I just love it! It's one of my prized possessions now thank you!❤
Dude your videos literally are the best thing to listen to while I'm rolling up for real
Codsworth absolutely has achieved personhood and sentience
I think one of the few characters I've gone out of my way to treat as best as I could in every single run in F4 was codsworth, i can't bring myself to harm or hate him, he IS and forever will be part of my Sole Suvirvor's family.
How can the institute meet cogsworth and not believe synths are people.
The same way that people can view pets as "just property".
Because they’re morons more inhuman than the mutants and the milk bloods they create.
