  • Vampyr released in the summer or 2018 to mixed reviews. Most critics pointed out the plethora of technical issues and problematic presentation; however, this all seems like low hanging fruit (though it should be mentioned). And so, today we go in DEEP with how the game works and why it fails in achieving its primary objective.

Absolutely. I loved it with a passion. And I loved my ending as well. I roleplayed as a guy who killed people (not everyone but quite a bit) but took care of my patients at the same time. Basically a serial killer that's also a good doctor. I loved that balance

Yah it really aloud you to make your own morality based on characters backstories and if you just murdered right away you miss out on so many lil tales. I made that mistake once and found myself wanting to really hear everyone before I decided. Then it made it so satisfying to take someone out.

I disagree very much with the notion that WWI should've been shown. Its status as a vague 'other place in time' is important to the 'coming back' aspects of the narrative, you see the world and especially individuals affected by this place, this thing that's happening somewhere far away but is ultimately illusive to people who haven't experienced it, and those that have can't - or don't want to - express it to others, and those others would likely be unable to fully comprehend it. That's war from a distance, or rather - wartime.
Vampyr is very much a period piece despite its fantastical central elements, and the feeling that London is somehow suspended in time, an island amidst a darker worldscape is (while exaggerated) based in the feelings of the times. Think about it, you have political and social turmoil at home, a devastating war abroad, an open revolt in Ireland and a bloody suppression, and now a fucking god-awful flu epidemic that will eventually kill more people than the World War will kill. To a lot of folks it seemed like the end-times, and the best way to depict this without being hokey or conflicting with those fantastical elements is to express it in atmosphere - a general sense that something is looming and ready to pop off at any moment - and to express it in nervous, anxious dialogue framing these vague other cataclysms.
In this game, you can not show historical 'events' by themselves, they need to always be tied with anxiety or emotion in a character and always from a healthy distance. They have to seem like they are themselves monsters looming in the shadows and pulling strings - and they are, even in reality.
There are ways to build a backstory for Count Docturla, but showing his time in the First World War, particularly in the setting itself, would've been a misstep I think.

My only playthrough was under the mission of gaining the „not even once” trophy. And while I completely understand people coming to the conclusion that refraining from embracing NPC’s and essentially limiting yourself by refusing to utilize a huge element of the game, I really enjoyed it. To me, it felt it was most in balance with Jonathan’s character of being a doctor. Walking through London, helping out people by visiting the many destitute and bleak places and giving them medicine. Healing and maintaining every district so it won’t fall to the epidemic. I really liked it. But I totally get why this is considered boring.

It's 2023 and I just finished this game, mostly playing on my Steam Deck, but also a fair amount on my ryzen7 6800xt ndme system and imagine there must be some great patches that have come out, our perhaps my system just powered through stuff, because I had very little of the glitches and loading of which you spoke. It took a relatively long time to load after each death, but my main gripe was the level design and frustrations of navigating areas. Otherwise I loved this game and I was surprised by both the quality of the story, the incredible audio, including both the musical scores and the voice acting. I truly enjoyed this game.

The problem with this game is that is very difficult to create a great game with this idea. Yeah, the idea is great, but is so difficult to make a game based in that. And certainly a developer like Dontdod doesn,t have the resources for a game like this. This is clearly reflected in the loading times, something that you mention. Anyway, is a game that tries to do something different and it doesn,t totally fail. If you like the setting or the story is a very enjoyable game.

I didn’t expect much going into it; it was not a full $60 game even on release (I think it was around $30 or $40) and I got a good 8 hours or so out of it. Didn’t experience any bugs or issues, which can really make me hate a game.
Hellblade Senuas Sacrifice was a game that I had to restart it (halfway through the game both times) because of game breaking bugs. That was probably over a year ago and I’m still pissy about it.

I enjoyed the game for the most part. Though my biggest complaint was that I wanted the vampire society to be more in-depth. I wanted a longer narrative experience where you can really navigate the high vampire society in an open world setting. Overall I would give it about about a 7.5/10 but there’s a lot I would’ve added to it.
But I do get that it was from a smaller developer so it would’ve been difficult to put out a full blown open world where you can choose to the run city, or all of Britain, from the guild of vampires.

I heard it had issues on consoles, but on PC it ran and looked beautifully. I think the issue people had, was expectations, as it usualy is when gamers end up dissapointed. I just bought it on a whim and had no clue what I was going into, doing that I ended up having a great time, it all worked as the game told me it will so this critique seems very harsh to me.
Also, no offence to your buddy, but you gotta be kidding :D How is one of your arguments built on something like this, even IF a person would not be certain about whether combat mechanic influences the story (which simply is not the case in like 99% of games) a quick search would immidiately answer that question.
I played the game as a good guy, didnt embrace anyone, had super hard time and im not even that adept in games to be honest, but it certainly is doable, saying its build with being half and half in mind is nonsense, since there are specific endings for good and bad. If you are good, its harder, it makes sense and if you are evil you are essentially a vampire lord, wrecking shit, also makes sense. Its a roleplay thing, if you dont care about that, you wont care about being good or bad and just do what seems most fun to you.

For a game where narrative choices and people's deaths do really matter, look at Pathologic 2. That game has AMAZING stakes. Not every single npc there is important, but basically everyone you interact with, everyone you know by name, is. Because if they die, their quest line and/or connection to you gets cut off. And since it's very hard, and you're always short on time and resources, especially on the first playthrough, when u don't know where and what is, you're always going to lose someone. On like the 2 or 3d in-game day I've heard that something weird is happening to MC's childhood friend. And i wanted to go to him. But I had so much stuff on my plate, I simply haven't have the time that day. And when the clock struck 12, and the voice starting reading out, who lived and who died that night, I was utterly shocked. Because he was done. My childhood friend, whom I wanted to talk to, to reconcile with, hear out his perspective on the epidemic, just.. gone. Simple because I hadn't check up on him, I couldn't.
And like wow, that games really makes you prioritize. And the fate of the characters impacts the fate of the city. I won't tell how, for the sake of the spoilers and the fact that I haven't reached the ending yet, so I dunno, how it all affects the ending

Are those little dialogue bits in Batman really loading screens though? Because I'm pretty sure that when you're backtracking, Barbara doesn't call you every time you walk down that same corridor so the game can load the area again... Pretty sure those are just to let you know that you're safe for now, no thugs are going to jump you when you're in a well-lit corridor and talking to Barb. All the door-opening transitions are definitely loads, but I really doubt the exposition was used for the same purpose. Saying that,I didn't mind the loading screens at all in Vampyr, and it's quite a slow-paced game by nature anyway. Excessive loading screens in a fast paced multiplayer shooter like Anthem are unforgivable. This, not so much.

My main problems are the movement and moral parts of the story, sure it's cool to Dart around certain points, but it's close to being rare, a vampire has so many options to traverse the environment, but they don't do that, you can't even jump, and the moral as Luke says can turn off people from the game, there could've been people that deserve to die but no, everyone is justified a bit, which does add a dilemma to the game, but is infuriating for when you think that you can finally get ahead in the game, but then you find out they have a kid, I'm still the most frustrated with movement, I wish I could leap over buildings so many opportunities there
