fe3b 22, 2016 super glue, sponge to attach moss to branch. Very simple direct verbal & photo instructions. thank you for teaching me @79 yrs. young. My MD suggested I take up hobbies...this is one. PS: the music in the background was enjoyable and not distracting as many other video's are. Bruce .
Hi Dennis! I found your channel last night. I am devoid of sleep today because of it. I have to thank you for your very detailed videos. You have some of the best videos on You Tube regarding fresh water aquariums. I really enjoyed watching until 2am! I am back today watching more. Thank you.
I just ordered bonsai wood and Christmas moss and I'm soo glad I watched your video. I wouldn't have known about using sponge. It's always appreciated when someone takes the time and effort to school others and thank you soo much.
Great advice for adding volume to wood without a lot branches to work with using foam. I have wood like that and I couldn't figure out how to give it volume to make it look like a tree.
Incredible! Thank you for this useful and inspiring tutorial. I have a 1950's 5 gallon tank with no lid, the one with a lid is already a terrarium and I adore its shiny chrome frame and top, and I now have a use for the incomplete tank. Hopefully it will hold water! I had no idea that this type of moss could be submerged. The variety of sticks and sponge style fillers that can be used is endless. It appears that the ones you used were designed for fish tanks to begin with so I will dig through my tank supplies and see what I have. It's winter here in Minneapolis, Minnesota so I better get out to the yard and hunt for sticks before it snows. Thank you again for the awesome video. Your end result is very stunning. I absolutely love new project inspirations!!
I know this is an older video now but I just watched it for the first time and want to say thank you, I liked this video a lot including the concise nature of it.
very helpful tutorial, I've just been out today and bought some moss, super glue, sponge and found some suitable sticks on the park, so gonna try this!
I'm so glad I watched your video. I just received my first bonsai/driftwood skeleton today and now I know exactly how to create what I want. Thank you!
Hey buddy thank you for the tutorial, amazing work. I attempted to give it a go with the bogwood and moss in my aquarium, as its impossible to get any live plant in england during lockdown. I recorded my attempt on my channel. Not so much a bonsai but my 2 year old recognised it was a tree.
Hi Dennis! A BIG thank you for the great tip on using sponge. Now my 'tree' provided shelter as well as a bedding nearer to the surface for my Betta! Even bigger thumbs up to see a fellow Singaporean in this community :3 P.S. Maybe you could drop by my bonsai tree vid and tip me on further improvements?
Andrew Gresham Thanks ! Moss grows quite slowly without CO2, but the tougher species like java/Christmas moss work very well in low tech settings (without CO2). Some of the more demanding mosses have better coloration, are greener and fuller with injected CO2
Hey Dennis! Thank you for all the info here - If I'm planning on using MC for my "canopy" will they also be happy rooting into the sponges as you've set up here?
finally a very informative and easy video. one small question, should the tree be close to the surface of the tank? what's the light requirement for the moss exactly? what is the ideal distance generally? later i can provide info on the lights that i use if that helps.
This is aquatic moss ... it can be fully submerged, how deep depends on the lighting system you have. Generally mosses can grow in very low light, but it'd be slow. Around 20+ umols of PAR will grow mosses.. as with most aquatic plants, CO2 injection makes it grow better
Hi Dennis. I have a moss tree as well and it used to be growing lusciously before and my shrimps love it. However recently my moss has not been growing so well. This could be due to me introducing pothos plants as additional filter media. Would you know what are the parameters for optimal moss growth? Would love to hear from an expert! Thanks.
As with most aquatic plants - they do their best with CO2 injection. Most mosses are easy plants - some fertilization, good light and CO2 and they should be easy to grow
This is exactly what my aquarium needs! I love the concept of using Bonsai sticks/ wood. Although I am having a very difficult time finding any. E-bay does not have any that would be the right size for a 29 gallon. Do you have any suggestions as to wear I can find some? Thank You......
Hello Dennis. Your video is inspirational to me to start an aquarium again. Would you please do an instructional video on your substrate materials that you use? Do you layer them? I would like to do a 5 gallon cube tank with tree on side with meditating buddha under such as in a garden. Thank you for any guidance that you could give.
Donna Yeah I do plan to do a vid on substrate.. I'm a bit behind on my vids, been replanting some tanks in the past month. Soil/dirt is very effective in a low tech setup without the use of CO2, but it varies from source to source. Sometimes it takes a bit of trial and error as well. For example the black layer is organic compost, which breakdown to give nutrients, however, if its too thick there can be problems. The brownish layer is mostly clay/iron rich soil.
What happens to the sponges after time? They're filter sponges so they're going to collect debris etc... right? I just bought some of this sponge and am just about ready to create my tree (with vesicularia ferriei (weeping moss) and am wondering what these sponge pieces will be like over time? thank you!
yubidubi Hmm the branches are sold in aquarium shops here, and the super glue can be bought from hardware shops... it's simpler than it looks actually :)
That's really nice, even though it's not obvious by the end result you show because it looks great, is sticking moss straight onto super glue toxic to it at all? the fumes that super glue gives off are quite horrible, what about pva, would that work?
How long of a wait period, if any, for fish to be in with the glue additive? Does it need to cure very long or relatively safe within a few minutes? This is beautiful work and I'm really considering making one with some spiderwood I have.
I assume the moss is alive and will continue to grow. where did you buy the moss? also i have a fake bonsai tree with real driftwood but obviously fake glued on branches. Could i use this after i remove the branches or where it was glued hurt the fish? thank you
You can only use plants that can live fully submerged. Anything else will rot. In my tank I use Pathos vines. It is a very common house plant with green and white leaves. It is large though, so if you wants something much smaller I would advise visiting your local fish store.
Very nice and useful video as usual! I just finished a video of how to glue moss last night but i have not uploaded it yet, i dont see the reason why i should anymore haha! Anyway i do have a question for ya, what camera and software did you use in this video? iphone camera quality gets old quick on me hah!
Dennis, Awesome video. I will be doing this soon! Please advise what types of substrate you used and why. I see you have 3 layers. Please advise what you used. Also, your light bulb you used please.
+Joe Smo Hi, I have a clay heavy/lower organic content soil on the bottom (with some peat for acidity), an organic heavy mid layer (mid/closer to the surface because bacteria action consumes O2 from water column) and a cap of aquasoil. The bacteria action from decomposition of the mid/upper layers provide some CO2 in a low tech tank... All the low tech tanks I have run on a somewhat similar system
Thank you Dennis for the very detailed and great answer. I would love to know a little more about the soils. For instance, did you make the bottom and mid soils yourself? If so, how did you make them and could you do a video on that or share the "how to" with me ? If you purchased them, can you please tell me what products you used and where you got them? Also, Does this soil have any affect in determining the types of plants you use? I have been learning more and more about Aquascaping lately, and I have really taken an interest in it. I have 4 tanks at home and one is a newly planted stump and root tank with Java moss and Cabomba that I'm going for a Rotan/Biotope feel for. In my small 6.6 gallon I want to create something much like the one in this video and I would love to know more. Personally, of all the 100s of videos I've seen on it so far I like yours the best! I think the 15 gallon cave tank you did is excellent in concept, design and look! Your insctructions are simple, step by step, less complicated and make it look very easy and you specialize on the low level, micro and small tanks and easy to do plants and setups. I love it! Keep it up please :) ! If you have any links or references on your soil and your art of aquascaping could you please share them? Thank you for sharing what you know and in video and post.
+Dennis Wong PS. are you using C02 diffusion in this tank or just ferts and liquid C02 ? What ferts and additives are you using ? Thanks, sorry if I'm asking to many questions just very interested in learning more.
+Joe Smo The moss tree tank is low tech without CO2 injection, I use dry ferts from powders; KNO3, KH2PO4, K2SO4 etc. On soil, I use different packets each time, and aquarium plants are generally flexible, so many soils work. The main things to consider is to choose a soil that have some organic content, but not excessive - and preferably organic content that has already went through substantial decomposition. Generally, the blacker the soil, the higher the organic content, the more bacteria action there is, and it should be aerated and closer to the surface. Balanced loams (mix of organics, silt and clay) that are less organic heavy can be used in the lower layers. Ironic rich substrates should be near the bottom where soil redox is low... similarly, peat can be added to lower soil pH to increase micro-nutrient availability. There are books on soil science out there if you are interested, but these are the basics
+Dennis Wong Dennis, thank you so much for the reply and continued information. I had the luck of speaking with some friends in the Aquarium hobby (store owners) that suggested that you are doing a sort of "Walstad" configuration on the tank and to look it up. I did and I LOVE IT! Is that essentially what you're doing with the different organic soils? Seems so and I am grateful for your information on it. I will be planing to do this soon. The only new question I have based on your reply is that you mentioned "aerated" do you mean as in bubble stones or by puncturing the surface? Someone warned me about puncturing or planting down to the lower soil, is this a justified concern? If so, would the use of MTS (Malaysian Trumpet Snails) be helpful in this tank to help with the toxic gas build up from the soil? Should I plant shallow ? P.s. I got the Deep Blue Nano filer just like the one you have ! I found it and happens to be the same 2 stage filter. Chihiros 251 lights on the way from Hong kong :) The HARDEST thing to find seems to be the Bonsai wood. Would you sell me some ?
Hi Dennis, thanks for this useful video. i have a question, how long does it take the glue to cure? Will if affect my fish if i put them tgt with the tree right after i build it? Thank you
Thank you so much for this great video :), I would like to do the same but with Sphagnum moss in a closed terrarium but not going to fill it with water...would this still work, sorry maybe this is a silly question, Im new to terrarium's ...thanks in advance
fats de Jesus Yes I think it'll work as long as the humidity level of the terrarium is kept high. Most of these mosses grow fine out of water as long as they don't dry out
I think your videos are the most down to earth videos for planted tanks. No drama, no shouting but pure information. Keep the good work
Thanks man
Well said
what kind of glue use???
yes good
Chen Zhong yes bro his videos are always amazing

ha thanks, yeah I'm using aquatic mosses - there are many types to choose from and they all give a slightly different look to the canopy
I know this is an older video now but I just watched it for the first time and want to say thank you, I liked this video a lot including the concise nature of it.
You're welcome ~
very helpful tutorial, I've just been out today and bought some moss, super glue, sponge and found some suitable sticks on the park, so gonna try this!
Never thought about using sponges. Such a great idea!
I really like that grey sand/gravel you've got there - looks really natural.
I kept seeing people with these in their tanks and I wanted to build one so bad. Thank you for this truly my fish say thank you as well.
yeah specially with a super glue in it
its not water soluble
I'm so glad I watched your video. I just received my first bonsai/driftwood skeleton today and now I know exactly how to create what I want. Thank you!
How did your tree turn out?
I'm amazed the plants can handle glue like this, cool! I love the effect!
Beautiful! Thank You for sharing your precious time, talent, resources, knowledge, and skills with ALL of us so we may learn from you!
Very informative, I have a few driftwood trees I will do this to, this sponge method is great, thanks for the video
That was a great video! It was very nice the way both trees turned out!
Beautiful job looks great!!
Wow, Dennis, really great video! Thanks very much!
Hi Dennis! A BIG thank you for the great tip on using sponge. Now my 'tree' provided shelter as well as a bedding nearer to the surface for my Betta! Even bigger thumbs up to see a fellow Singaporean in this community :3
P.S. Maybe you could drop by my bonsai tree vid and tip me on further improvements?
Beautiful and practical.. Lovely scape in tank.
Very nicely done video! Thank you! 👏👏👏👏
The best channel on RUclips! Thanks' Dennis!
Amazing! Very creative, and the results are impressive. Thanks for sharing!
Andrea Soilander Thanks for the support !
Wonderful. Thanks for the explanation. Greetings from Ecuador!
Great tutorial Dennis! Have you had much success with moss without CO2, and just dosing ferts?
Andrew Gresham Thanks ! Moss grows quite slowly without CO2, but the tougher species like java/Christmas moss work very well in low tech settings (without CO2). Some of the more demanding mosses have better coloration, are greener and fuller with injected CO2
hi great video, thank you for making it. question... what moss did you used? do you recommend any particular species of moss.
weeping moss works well, could use christmas, anchor as well
Hey Dennis! Thank you for all the info here - If I'm planning on using MC for my "canopy" will they also be happy rooting into the sponges as you've set up here?
yes, MC will work. It may take a while for them to settle in though
Listen to the man, I've had green twigs for months now..
Genius ideas, never tought of this alone!
Good job mate, great vids!
fluval also makes aquarium safe super glue. love your videos by the way. great back ground music.
finally a very informative and easy video.
one small question, should the tree be close to the surface of the tank? what's the light requirement for the moss exactly?

You're welcome ~ A bunch of us will be gathering in Chicago in nov for the Aquatic Experience exhibition
Thanks very much for the video. I wouldn't have thought of using sponges to create volume! I subbed your channel. :)
lizzyanthus1 yes its best methos
This was informative and straight to the pount. CONGRATS MAN :)
great video mate looks good will be trying it soon
Appreciate the advice. Great video. I am preparing for my first effort. Your video will no doubt help. Thank you.
Good works. I prefer coconut instead of sponge. Also Sponge so good
Also, that one gallon tank is so awesome
Thanks for coming by! Looking forward to seeing the changes in your tank too~
great information to have was wanting to be able to make a better moss tree as bonsai wood is expensive thanks for the tips.
holy cow. no clue how i just found you.. but i subbed immediately!
+datinyone heh thanks, been busy for awhile,,but will probably have more stuff soon
damn bloody simple yet very very informative . keep up the good job.
Amazingly beautiful! Thank you!. Is this completely submerged under water? What kind of water?
Yes, these are aquatic mosses
Hi Dennis. I have a moss tree as well and it used to be growing lusciously before and my shrimps love it. However recently my moss has not been growing so well. This could be due to me introducing pothos plants as additional filter media.

video is very nice and plz make some more videos about decoration of aquarium, maintainence and what fishes to keep
Ive always wondered how to do that, great video!
Really nice video Broo.... Thanks alot.. you give a awesome idea
Thanks mate. Very helpful.
How beautiful! How long should I wait before putting fish in the tank? I'm concerned the glue might be toxic to fish...?
Later reply haha, super glue is completely safe in aquariums after about 1 to 10 minutes after it solidifies.
@@Harurema super late hahaha ty for the infor btw

very very nice video man thanks for making it
Beautiful and inspiring. Thank you.
You're welcome ~
inspirational . excellent simple and concise . thank you
thanks very much for sharing, dennis! much appreciated..
looking on bonsai trees now.. hope i can find some here in my area..
I love this video. Where did you get the supplies for this project?
yubidubi Hmm the branches are sold in aquarium shops here, and the super glue can be bought from hardware shops... it's simpler than it looks actually :)
Although I've done aquarium plants forever, this is my first try at aquascaping. What is the moss you are gluing? Java moss? Thanks. Great video!
I believe he’s using the weeping moss
Awesome ideas! Thank you.
Awesome love your instruction
+Armando Nava Thanks !
Great video, merci from france
callasexperience merci beaucoup !~
bro Appreciatable This video is one of the best of Your channel💕💕❤️
Crazy ideas of yours just great!
Hi Dennis, where did you get your tank setup and filter? Awesome tank setup.
+eric oneka HI, the tank is from Ikea and the filter is from local shops
love your estonian acent
NeffNeff Geiler he's Chinese...
Hey i really liked your video but where did u get the wood
Beautiful results. :) I love this idea. Thanks for the tutorial!
What tank is that? Looks nice and minimalist!
It's a vase from Ikea
Is a bonsai tree like this one all right for a Betta fish, or are the mini branches too pointy for a fish with long fins?
wont the superglue corrupt/poison the water for example if you put those trees into fishtanks?
Nope, super glue is commonly used by both the reef and freshwater planted community.
wow best video i have seen on moss trees. i was actually curious about them! nice work !
but does the glue affect the water quality?
+rudesucker Nope, same stuff that reef folks use to glue their corals
That's really nice, even though it's not obvious by the end result you show because it looks great, is sticking moss straight onto super glue toxic to it at all? the fumes that super glue gives off are quite horrible, what about pva, would that work?
it's not toxic, it's used by all competition scapes, contains same components as seachem's coral and plant glues, and is also used by marine tanks
Johny40Se7en the name of that glue is MXBON.
Hi Dennis, big fan of your channel. Can I ask what conditions must the water / light be in for moss to fluorish? Thanks
How long of a wait period, if any, for fish to be in with the glue additive? Does it need to cure very long or relatively safe within a few minutes? This is beautiful work and I'm really considering making one with some spiderwood I have.
It cures almost immediately, cures even when wet or underwater. Reef folks use it to glue live rock in their tanks
what type of soil/subtrate you have use in your video and do you have used any fertilizers to grow moss. plese share me link how to grow moss
I assume the moss is alive and will continue to grow. where did you buy the moss? also i have a fake bonsai tree with real driftwood but obviously fake glued on branches. Could i use this after i remove the branches or where it was glued hurt the fish? thank you
This is very cool thanks !
Very nice, thank you.
Brilliant! Can’t wait to try it!!
wow thank you, very good idea
I like your filter where did you get?
Nice video!! But doe
s it work if you use the grafitty moss recipe?
These are aquatic mosses that can grow under water, not sure if grafiti moss can
Back to the halo days... nice 👍
Thank you for the Video , very very usefull
Ah yeah! Read my mind. I want to try something like this. The sponge idea is sound. Thanks for the tip man.
can you use any type of tree or plant such as like herb plants (oregano, mint, etc.)?
You can only use plants that can live fully submerged. Anything else will rot. In my tank I use Pathos vines. It is a very common house plant with green and white leaves. It is large though, so if you wants something much smaller I would advise visiting your local fish store.
Very nice and useful video as usual! I just finished a video of how to glue moss last night but i have not uploaded it yet, i dont see the reason why i should anymore haha! Anyway i do have a question for ya, what camera and software did you use in this video? iphone camera quality gets old quick on me hah!
you should still upload yours~ Different people have different methods... I'm using a Fuji X20 for the recording and Sony vegas pro for the editing
Where did you get the sponge that you used for the first tree?
Filter sponge ~
This is brilliant! Your accent is cool too :)
Nice method.
Very nice !
Great vid...but What type of moss ?
These are aquatic mosses, there are many species.... weeping moss, christmas moss, etc
sounds like halo music :)
Haha I thought that too, lovely stuff, goes well with the video =P
Gotta love halo :)
Hans Fleischwulf i was thinking the same thing!
Hans Fleischwulf just picked up Master Chief edition for Xbox One ;)
awesome idea

topsoil capped with sand
Hi Dennis, thanks for this useful video. i have a question, how long does it take the glue to cure? Will if affect my fish if i put them tgt with the tree right after i build it?

cures instantly upon touching water. Can be done on wet surface as well
